• Storing file permissions in Subversion repository

  How do you store file permissions in a repository? A few files need to be read-only to stop a third party program from trashing it but after checking out of the repository they are set to read-write. I looked on google and found a blog post from 2005 that states that Subversion doesn't store file-permissions. There are patches and hook-scripts listed (only one url still exists). Three years later does Subversion still not store file permissions and are hooks the only way to go about this? (I've never done hooks and rather use something that is native to Subversion.)

• C# double-quoted path name being escaped when read from file

  I am trying to read in a text input file that contains a list of filenames (one per line). However, I am running into an issue if the user double-quotes the path (because it has a space in it). For example, a normal input file might have: C:\test\test.tiff C:\test\anothertest.tiff C:\test\lasttest.tiff These get read in fine by my code ("C:\\test\\test.tiff" etc) However, if I have the following input file: "C:\test with spaces\test.tiff" "C:\test with spaces\anothertest.tiff" "C:\test with spaces\lasttest.tiff" These get read in double-quotes and all ("\"C:\\test with spaces\\test.tiff\"" etc). This becomes a problem when I try to open the files (I understandably get invalid character exceptions). My question is, how do I fix this? I want to allow users to input quoted strings and handle them correctly. My first impression was to just write a little method that strips off beginning or ending quotes, but I thought there might be a better way.

• Stream a continously growing file over tcp/ip

  Hello, I have a project I'm working on, where a piece of Hardware is producing output that is continuously being written into a textfile. What I need to do is to stream that file as it's being written over a simple tcp/ip connection. I'm currently trying to that through simple netcat, but netcat only sends the part of the file that is written at the time of execution. It doesn't continue to send the rest. Right now I have a server listening to netcat on port 9000 (simply for test-purposes): netcat -l 9000 And the send command is: netcat localhost 9000 < c:\OUTPUTFILE So in my understanding netcat should actually be streaming the file, but it simply stops once everything that existed at the beginning of the execution has been sent. It doesn't kill the connection, but simply stops sending new data. How do I get it to stream the data continuously? Thanks for any help!

• Delphi-5 single-file storage solution?

  Hi! Is there a Delphi-5 solution to easily integrate single-file storage into existing code? I would like to have files like Java *.jar or Openoffice document files which are zipped/compressed files and folders but with their own file extension. Edit: I know some ZIP capable components but in a nutshell I want to access files within the "container" and use normal file handling routines on them (eg. TStringList.SaveToFile). Any overhead about compress/uncompress should be handled by the component.

• how to display a dialog if user can't download file

  hi. dealing with php/html/javascript. i'm trying to figure out a good/best approach to allowing a user to download a file. i can have the traditional href link, that interfaces with the back end php app to download the file. however, i want to have the app display some sort of dialog/alert if the user isn't able (basedon acl/permissions) to download the file... does this have to ba an ajax thing, as i don't want to do a page refresh... thoughts/comments/pointers to code samples are appreciated. thanks. -tom

• Java applet - access denied to file on same web server

  I've written a simple Java applet to generate a technical image based upon some data in a CSV file. I'm passing in the CSV file as a parameter to the applet: <applet code = "assaymap.AssayMapApplet" archive = "http://localhost/applet_test/AssayMap.jar" height="600px" width="800px"> <param name="csvFile" value="http://localhost/applet_test/test.csv"> </applet> As far as I understood applet security restrictions, an applet should be able to read data from the host they're on. These applets here http://www.jalview.org/examples/applets.html are using the same approach of passing in a text data file as a parameter. So I'm not sure why my own applet isn't working. The error message I get thrown is: Error with processing the CSV data. java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.io.FilePermission http:\localhost\applet_test\test.csv read)

• Not able to open a file in php

  The following code works when invoking through the command line with php -f test.php, from root. It does not work though when being invoked via apache when loading the php page. The code chokes at fopen() and the resulting web page just says "can't open file". <?php $fp = fopen("/path/to/some_file.txt","a") or die("can't open file"); fwrite($fp,"some text"); fclose($fp); ?> I tried to play with the file permissions, but to no avail. I changed the user/group with chown apache:apache test.php and changed permissions with chmod 755 test.php. • python duration of a file object in an argument list

  In the pickle module documentation there is a snippet of example code: reader = pickle.load(open('save.p', 'rb')) which upon first read looked like it would allocate a system file descriptor, read its contents and then "leak" the open descriptor for there isn't any handle accessible to call close() upon. This got me wondering if there was any hidden magic that takes care of this case. Diving into the source, I found in Modules/_fileio.c that file descriptors are closed by the fileio_dealloc() destructor which led to the real question. What is the duration of the file object returned by the example code above? After that statement executes does the object indeed become unreferenced and therefore will the fd be subject to a real close(2) call at some future garbage collection sweep? If so, is the example line good practice, or should one not count on the fd being released thus risking kernel per-process descriptor table exhaustion?

  I've got a model like this: class Talk(BaseModel): title = models.CharField(max_length=200) mp3 = models.FileField(upload_to = u'talks/', max_length=200) seconds = models.IntegerField(blank = True, null = True) I want to validate before saving that the uploaded file is an MP3, like this: def is_mp3(path_to_file): from mutagen.mp3 import MP3 audio = MP3(path_to_file) return not audio.info.sketchy Once I'm sure I've got an MP3, I want to save the length of the talk in the seconds attribute, like this: audio = MP3(path_to_file) self.seconds = audio.info.length The problem is, before saving, the uploaded file doesn't have a path (see this ticket, closed as wontfix), so I can't process the MP3. I'd like to raise a nice validation error so that ModelForms can display a helpful error ("You idiot, you didn't upload an MP3" or something). Any idea how I can go about accessing the file before it's saved? p.s. If anyone knows a better way of validating files are MP3s I'm all ears - I also want to be able to mess around with ID3 data (set the artist, album, title and probably album art, so I need it to be processable by mutagen).

The problem I'm facing is - files would be stored in a public directory and easily accessed by anyone knowing the file url. Is there a way I can restrict file access to a certain user group?

  I'm looking for a way to read document properties in C#. I've heard about dsofile.dll, but it seems like an old COM wrapper, and was wondering if there is something more modern for the .NET framework/C#. What I'm actually reading is not an office document file, but a Solidworks .SLDDRW file, that has Custom properties. You can view and change these in Windows Explorer by right-clicking on the file, and going to the Properties window, Custom tab. Anyone know how to read these custom properties in C# / .NET 3.5? • How can I find file system concurrency issues ?

  I have an application running on Linux, and I find myself wanting windows (!). The problem is that every 1000 times or so I run into concurrency problems that are consistent with concurrent reading/writing of files. I am fairly sure that this behavior would be prohibited by file locking under Windows, but I don't have any sufficiently fast windows box to check. There is simply too much file access (too much data) to expect strace to work reliably - the sheer volume of output is likely to change the problem too. It also happens on different files every time. Ideally I would like to change/reconfigure the linux file system to be more restrictive (as in fail-fast) wrt concurrent access. Are there any tools/settings I can use to achieve this ?

  We receive lots of data as flat files: delimitted or just fixed length records. It's sometimes hard to find out what the files actually contain. Are there any well established practices for embedding the schema of the file to the beginning or the end of a file to make the file self-explanatory?   I have a directory /tmp/dir with two types of file names /tmp/dir/abc-something-server.log /tmp/dir/xyz-something-server.log .. .. and /tmp/dir/something-client.log I need append a few lines (these lines are constant) to files end with "client.log" line 1 line 2 line 3 line 4 append these four lines to files end with "client.log" and For files end with "server.log" I needed to append after a keyword say "After-this". "server.log " file has multiple entries of "After-this" I need to find the first entry of "After-this" and append above said four lines keep the remaining file as it is.   Hi, I'm looking for a way to open encrypted files that are stored on a server. I'm using mcrypt to encrypt the files. I was initially going to create a class that would open the file, decrypt it, write it to a new location, then open that. But I have convinced myself there is a better way (I just don't know what it is). It seems like there should be a way to stream it (?) to the browser once it's decrypted. The initial setup would just link to the file location and the browser would take over (e.g. .pdf files would bring up a dialogue offering to open or save the file). If possible, I'd like it to do the same after decoding. Pointers? Advice? Bueller? Thanks!

• Opening Large (24 GB) File In C

  I'm trying to read in a 24 GB XML file in C, but it won't work. I'm printing out the current position using ftell() as I read it in, but once it gets to a big enough number, it goes back to a small number and starts over, never even getting 20% through the file. I assume this is a problem with the range of the variable that's used to store the position (long), which can go up to about 4,000,000,000 according to http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/s3f49ktz%28VS.80%29.aspx, while my file is 25,000,000,000 bytes in size. A long long should work, but how would I change what my compiler(Cygwin/mingw32) uses or get it to have fopen64?

• Maximum File Size and Pixels for Uploaded Business Documents

  I am creating a php form that accepts an upload of business documents in a variety of formats .pdf, .doc, .tiff, .jpeg, etc. and I need to restrict the size of the files that are uploaded. It's trivial for me to restrict the file size, but I'm not sure if I should also restrict the max height/width, which are also available options. I will need to occasionally print these documents to 8.5 X 11inch paper and have them be legible, but don't really care if images come out. Should I restrict the pixels sizes or is that redundant with restricting the file size? If so, do you guys have a recommendations for max height/width for, say, a 5MB file size limit? I really have no idea what the relationship between pixel size and image size is or what the common pixel sizes are for scanned images. Also, what would be a reasonable size expectation for a legible print per page?

  Suppose I want to open a file in an existing Emacs session using su or sudo, without dropping down to a shell and doing sudoedit or sudo emacs. One way to do this is (require 'tramp) C-c C-f /sudo::/path/to/file but this requires an expensive round-trip through SSH. Is there a more direct way? [EDIT] @JBB is right. I want to be able to invoke su/sudo to save as well as open. It would be OK (but not ideal) to re-authorize when saving. What I'm looking for is variations of find-file and save-buffer that can be "piped" through su/sudo.

• Linux - File was deleted and then reappeared when folder was zipped

  Hello, I am using Backtrack 4 Final, which is a Linux distro that is Ubuntu based. I had a directory that contained around 5 files. I deleted one of the files, which sent it to the trash. I then zipped the directory up (now containing 4 files), using this command: zip -r directory.zip directory/ When I then unzipped directory.zip, the file I deleted was in there again. I couldn't believe this, so I zipped up the directory again, and the file reappeared again but this time could not be opened because the operating system said it didn't exist or something. I don't remember the exact error, and I cannot make this happen again. Would anyone happen to know why a file that was deleted from a directory would reappear in that directory after it was zipped up? Thank you.
