• System in low-graphics mode

  I am totally new to Linux, and Ubuntu. I bought ASUS X53E Notebook, erased Windows and installed Ubuntu. First it worked ok. Then when I started working with it, i opened the terminal, entered sudo chmod 666 usr and then all the icons from the main panel disappeared + the whole system stopped responding. I decided to restart the system. When restarted, a message appears: the system is running in low graphics mode and below it: Your screen, graphics card and input device setting could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure it yourself. But the "OK" button is disabled and if I press any buttons nothing happens. If I enter Ctrl-Alt-F2 it opens the bash terminal. But there commands sudo or apt-get are not found and it says that permission denied if i try to enter any folder like cd /usr If I enter the su command it asks for the password I don't know. When encountering this problem first, I reinstalled the whole Ubuntu. but today it happened again just the same. What shall I do? maybe there is something wrong with the hardware? If I need to install another distribution of Linux could you recommend one? but I'd rather stick to Debian releases like Ubuntu. so how do I fix the problem? PS: Please give answers in simple terms because am a newbie so i don't know what goes where yet.

• I want to be able to use the unity menu with Citrix full screen

  I use Citrix Reciever at work, with both XenApp and XenDesktop. Many times at the same time. Since the unity Menu stil apeirs on the top anyway, I'd like to be able to use it. Now I can see it, but it doesn't work.. I have to either tab me out, (double clicking the ALT first)opening another program first, or move the mouse to the left, opening another program from the unity menu from the left, BEFORE I can use the menu on the top.. (my menu on the left side is in autohide mode, so I actually like it :)) For example. I use spotify for lisening to music, it apeirs on the top menu, but it doesn't react when it click it.. I have to move the mouse to the left, open another program, then move to the top an ask it to show spofity. If I open spofify from the left menu, it hangs.. (since its hidden, and I have to ask it to be open, not reopen the hole program..) Or If I want to lock the screen, I have to open another program, (i.ex. nixnote) before I can lock it) since the unity menu is "on the top" anyways, I don't see the problem that it should be able to control such things..

• Solutions for "Maintenance Mode"

  Given a web application running across 10+ servers, what techniques have you put in place for doing things like altering the state of your website so that you can implement certain features. For instance, you might want to: Restrict Logins/Disable Certain Features Turn Site to "Read Only" Turn Site to Single "Maintenance Mode" page. Doing any of the above is pretty trivial. You can throw a particular "flag" in an .ini file, or add a row/value to a site_options table in your database and just read that value and do the appropriate thing. But these solutions have their problems. Disadvantages/Problems For instance, if you use a file for your application, and you want to switch off a certain feature temporarily, then you need to update this file on all servers. So then you might want to look at running something like ZooKeeper, but you are probably overcomplicating things. So then, you might decide that you want to store these "feature" flags in a database. But then you are obviously adding unncessary queries to each page request. So you think to yourself, that you will throw memcached in to the mix and just cache the query. Then you just retrieve all of your "Features" from memcached and add a 2ms~ latency to your application on every page. So to get around this, you decide to use a two tier-cache system, whereby you use an inmemory cache on each machine, (like Apc/Redis etc). This would work, but then it gets complicated, because you would have to set the key/hash life to perhaps 60 seconds, so that when you purge/invalidate the memcached object storing your "Features" result, your on machine cache is prompt enough to get the the new states. What suggestions might you have? Keeping in mind that optimization/efficiency is the priority here.

• prism and multiple screens

  OK - I am studying Prism a little because of a "free weekend" offer on Pluralsight. As this is proving too complex for me, I went to the Prism book and looked at the forward, and this is what it said: What comes after “Hello, World?” WPF and Silverlight developers are blessed with an abundance of excellent books... There’s no lack of tutorials on Model-View-ViewModel ... But they stop short of the guidance you need to deliver a non-trivial application in full. Your first screen goes well. You add a second screen and a third. Because you started your solution with the built-in “Navigation Application Template,” adding new screens feels like hanging shirts on a closet rod. You are on a roll. Until the harsh reality of real application requirements sets in. As it happens, your application has 30 screens not three. There’s no room on that closet rod for 30 screens. Some screens are modal pop-ups; you don’t navigate to a pop-up. Screens become interdependent such that user activity in one screen triggers changes that propagate throughout the UI. Some screens are optional; others are visible only to authorized users. Some screens are permanent, while other screens can be opened and closed at will. You discover that navigating back to a previously displayed screen creates a new instance. That’s not what you expected and, to your horror, the prior instance is gone along with the user’s unsaved changes. Now the issue is, I don't relate to this description. I've never been a UI programmer, but same as everyone else I'm using Windows apps such as MS-Office, and web sites such as Amazon, Facebook and StackExchange. And I look at these and I don't see many "so many screens" issues! Indeed, the only applications having many windows I can think of is Visual Studio. Maybe also Visio, a little. But take Word - You have a ribbon and a main window. Or take Facebook: You have those lists on the left (Favorites, Lists, Groups etc.), the status middle, the adds and then the Contacts sidebar. But it's only one page. Of course, I understand that in enterprise scenarios there are dashboad applications where multiple segments of the screen are updated from multiple non-related services. This I dig. But other scenarios? So - What am I missing? What is the "multiple screens" monster Pirsm is supposed to be the silver bullet solution for? Shoud I invest in studying Prism in addition to learning WPF or ASP.NET MVC?

• Command line mode only -- successful login only brings me back to login screen

  whenever I log in the screen goes black, I see a glimpse of terminal-esque text, and then it brings me back to the log in screen (Ubuntu 12.04). I can enter and log in via the command line. The guest account works find. I think this happened because I edited some Xorg related file trying to make an external monitor work with my laptop. I copy pasted from a forum post so I dont recall the file or what i put in the file. Can't find the forum post again and my bash history wasn't recorded from that session. I tried reinstalling Xorg and ubuntu-desktop, nvidia, resetting any configs I could find... I'm really at a loss of what to do. • How can I troubleshoot a "Hardware Malfunction" blue screen?

  My computer has suddenly started crashing to a blue screen with the following text: hardware malfunction call your hardware vendor for support *the system has halted* The crash occurs randomly during normal use. I have thus far always been able to reproduce it by transferring the contents of a large folder... But I'm not sure if this is caused by the file transfer, or simply because the transfer takes long enough for something else to trigger it. A bit about my hardware I have an dual core Intel CPU, and Asus motherboard. Video card is by nVidia, and connects via PCIe. My hard drives are in pairs, and connect via SATA to a RAID controller on the motherboard. They are configured to use a RAID0 configuration. What I've tried so far There is nothing in the Windows Event Log. WhoCrashed was unable to find any crash records. ScanDisk runs to completion (it launches prior to Windows load) and reports no errors. MemTest reports no errors (to 200% coverage). System temperatures are in the range of 40 to 50 degrees Celsius, with video card temperatures in the range of 60 to eighty degrees Celsius. I have stripped the system down to a minimal configuration (hard drive, video card, one memory module, motherboard, CPU, power supply). The problem still occurrs. However, this has allowed me to rule out a few components: It is not the video card because the problem still occurred after replacing the video card another one I had on hand. It is not the hard drive or anything software related because the problem occurred after a fresh installation of Windows on a replacement hard drive. It is not the hard drive cables because I replaced those with new ones and still had the problem. It is not the power supply because the problem still occurred after replacing the power supply with another one I had on hand. It is probably not the memory because I've tried three different memory modules in three different memory slots and was still able to replicate the issue. Is there anything I can do to confirm what's causing the issue? At the moment it seems as though it must be either the motherboard or CPU, but those are both difficult components to replace... In addition, both components are relatively new (two to three years old). I will gladly edit in any additional information I can get my hands on, and/or focus the question as I can find more details...

  If you’ve been dabbling in DIY electronics projects but you’re not so excited about keeping strong acids around to etch your circuit boards, this simple DIY recipe uses common household chemicals in lieu of strong acid. Electronics hobbyist Stephen Hobley wanted to see if he could create an etching solution that wasn’t as dangerous and noxious smelling at traditional muriatic acid solutions. By combining regular white vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, and table salt, he created a homemade etching solution from ingredients safe enough to store in your pantry. The only downside to his recipe is that, compared to traditional etching solutions, the process takes a little bit longer so you’ll have to leave your board in the solution longer. Not a bad trade off for the ability to skip using any oops-I-burned-my-skin-off acids.   For those of you who may have missed it, Peter Flies, Principal Technical Support Engineer for WebCenter Content, gave an excellent webcast on database searching and indexing in WebCenter Content.  It's available for replay along with a download of the slidedeck.  Look for the one titled 'WebCenter Content: Database Searching and Indexing'. One of the items he led with...and concluded with...was a recommendation on optimizing your search collection if you are using full-text searching with the Oracle database.  This can greatly improve your search performance.  And this would apply to both Oracle Text Search and DATABASE.FULLTEXT search methods.  Peter describes how a collection can become fragmented over time as content is added, updated, and deleted.  Just like you should defragment your hard drive from time to time to get your files placed on the disk in the most optimal way, you should do the same for the search collection. • Screen shots and documentation on the cheap

  Occasionally I am surprised to open up my toolbox and find a great tool that I've had for years and never noticed.  The other day I had just such an experience with Windows Server 2008.  A co-worker of mine was squinting to read to screenshots that he had taken using the "Print Screen, paste" method in WordPad and asked me if there was a better tool available at a reasonable cost.  My first instinct was to take a look at CamStudio for him, but I also knew that he had an immediate need to take some more screenshots, so I decided to check and see if the Snipping Tool found in Windows 7 is also available in Windows Server 2008.  I clicked the Start button and typed “snip” into the search bar and while the Snipping Tool did not come up, a Control Panel item labeled “Record steps to reproduce a problem” did. The application behind the Control Panel entry was “Problem Steps Recorder” (PSR.exe) and I have confirmed that it is available in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 but have not checked other platforms.  It presents a pretty minimal and intuitive interface in providing a “Start Record”, “Stop Record”, and “Add Comment” button.  The “Start Record” button shockingly starts recording and, sure enough, the “Stop Record” button stops recording.  The “Add Comment” button prompts for a comment and for you to highlight the area of the screen to which your comment is related.  Once you’re done recording, the tool outputs an MHT file packaged in a ZIP archive.  This file contains a series of screen shots depicting the user’s interactions and giving timestamps and descriptive text (such as “User left click on “Test” in “My Page – Windows Internet Explorer”) as well as the comments they made along the way and some diagnostics about the applications captured. The Problem Steps Recorder looks like a simple solution to the most common of my needs for documentation that can turn “I can’t understand how to make it do what you’re reporting” to “Oh, I see what you’re talking about and will fix it right away”.  I you’re like me and haven’t yet discovered this tool give it a whirl and see for yourself.

• How To Temporarily Disable The Touch Screen In X1 Carbon

  I know, why would anyone want to do that? Scott properly predicted: Don't knock a touchscreen until you've used one. Every laptop should (and will) have a touch screen in a year. Mark my words. And surely, less than a year later, the X1 Carbon (an amazing ultrabook for sure) has a touch model. And as of today, the price difference for the touch screen is a ridiculous $30 (actually $24 with a “back to school” coupon right now ;)): So why would you NOT get it? I know for some it works great. Now, let’s get real about touch *for a developer* for a minute. About 99.9% of my time in front of my laptop I’m either using Visual Studio or Chrome. I have my hands on the keyboard ALL THE TIME. I use the trackpoint ALL THE TIME. If I want to scroll, I only have to slightly move my fingers. I don’t click around much on pages: I READ them. So, in a few months of using the X1, I think I touched the screen like 10 times, and it was mostly to clear dust, which drives whatever app is in focus crazy. • Watson Ties Against Human Jeopardy Opponents

  In January we showed you a video of Waton in a practice round against Jeopardy champions Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. Last night they squared off in a real round of Jeopardy with Watson in a tie with Rutter. Watson held his own against the two champions leveraging the 90 IBM Power 750 servers, 2,880 processors, and the 16TB of memory driving him to his full advantage. It was impressive to watch the round unfold and to see where Watson shined and where he faltered. Check out the video below to footage of Watson in training and then in action on Jeopardy. Pay special attention to the things that trip him up. Watson answers cut and dry questions with absolute lighting speed but stumbles when it comes to nuances in language–like finis vs. terminus in the train question that Jennings answered correctly. • Libgdx detect when player is outside of screen

  Im trying to learn libGDX (coming from XNA/MonoDevelop), and I'm making a super simple test game to get to know it better. I was wondering how to detect if the player sprite is outside of the screen and make it so it is impossible to go outside of the screen edges. • Final Man vs. Machine Round of Jeopardy Unfolds; Watson Dominates

  The final round of IBM’s Watson against Ken Jenning and Brad Rutter ended last night with Watson coming out in a strong lead against its two human opponents. Read on to catch a video of the match and see just how quick Watson is on the draw. Watson tore through many of the answers, the little probability bar at the bottom of the screen denoting it was often 95%+ confident in its answers. Some of the more interesting stumbles were, like in the last matches, based on nuance. By far the biggest “What?” moment of the night, however, was when it answered the Daily Double question of “The New Yorker’s 1959 review of this said in its brevity and clarity, it is ‘unlike most such manuals, a book as well as a tool’”. • Ubuntu 12.04 NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 black screen during boot

  I'm using Ubuntu as the only operating system since two years. In the first Ubuntu versions I had seen my BIOS screen and the boot screens. Actually im using Ubuntu 12.04 and my screen stays black until Ubuntu is started (both screens are missing). I guess this situation appeared the first time in Ubuntu 11 (not sure). I searched via google and tried the popular activities but was not able to fix my issue. I opened the laptop and checked all connections. I'm using boot option nomodeset. I had a look through many many web pages. I don't know how to continue and hope somebody could be helpful. • Cedarview drivers boot to a blank screen

  I'm following the tutorial following tutorial to get my Intel D2700DC motherboard's graphics working: http://daily.siebler.eu/2012/06/ubuntu-12-04-driver-for-intel-cedarview-atom-n2000-und-d2000-serie/ When I boot I'm getting a blank screen. I followed the tutorial and read all the comments. I've also tried: Install gdm and use this instead of lightdm (ubuntu default) sudo apt-get install gdm Remove previous pae kernel: http://www.liberiangeek.net/2011/11/remove-old-kernels-in-ubuntu-11-10-oneiric-ocelot/ Reboot before adding cedarview packages. Have tried with and without the "video=LVDS-1:d" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT variable in /etc/default/grub I still get a blank screen. I am plugged into a HD screen through the HDMI and have tried the DVI connector also. I can see the grub menu, then a little of the loading and then 'No signal'. • Order of operations to render VBO to FBO texture and then rendering FBO texture full quad

  I've just started using OpenGL with C# via the OpenTK library. I've managed to successfully render my game world using VBOs. I now want to create a pixellated affect by rendering the frame to an offscreen FBO with a size half of my GameWindow size and then render that FBO to a full screen quad. I've been looking at the OpenTK example here: http://www.opentk.com/doc/graphics/frame-buffer-objects ...but the result is a black form. I'm not sure which parts of the example code belongs in the OnLoad event and OnRenderFrame. Can someone please tell me if the below code shows the correct order of operations?
