  • How do I configure Ubuntu's web applications? [closed]

    Ubuntu 12.10 has introduced among other things web applications that add launcher widgets to show, for example, unread Gmail message counts, twitter tweets, etc. While sites that support those widgets show notifications offering to install them, I can't seem to find how to configure them. I'm particularly interested in configuring Google mail desktop notification widget to only display unread counts for my inbox, and dismiss all other labels.

  • SQL SERVER – What is SSAS Tabular Data model and Why to use it – Part 2

    In my last article, I talked about the basics of tabular data model and why use it. Then I demonstrated step by step creation of a basic tabular model project. In this part I’m going to throw some light on how to create measures and analyses in excel. If you look at the tabular project closely, you will notice that we have not defined any measure yet. So, in the first step we will define the measure first.  Open the solution and select the column you want to define as a measure. Then, click on the summation icon on the toolbar. You will see the aggregated results at the bottom of that column. You have also other choices as well like average, min, max, count and distinct count. After creating the required measures, we need to analyze our data in excel. To do this, click on the excel icon in the upper left corner of the toolbar. This will open your analysis in excel. Notice the pivot table field list here. I have highlighted the measures that we created in the earlier step. Now, we can use these measures in our analysis Now, we have to put the required fields in their respective places as column labels, row labels, Values and Report filter for analysis. See below snapshot for details, it shows region wise sales on a yearly basis You can even apply filters on the above analysis by placing the slicer field in report filter. In our example, we will take an English product name as a filter. You can use the filter as depicted in the below snapshot. Optionally, you can also use the slider to filter data more interactively.   • String contains trailing zeroes when converted from decimal [migrated]

    I've run into an unusual quirk in a program I'm writing, and I was trying to figure out if anyone knew the cause. Note that fixing the issue is easy enough. I just can't figure out why it is happening in the first place. I have a WinForms program written in VB.NET that is displaying a subset of data. It contains a few labels that show numeric values (the .Text property of the labels are being assigned directly from the Decimal values). These numbers are being returned by a DLL I wrote in C#. The DLL calls a webservice which initially returns the values in question. It returns one as a string, the other as a decimal (I don't have any control over the webservice, I just consume it). The DLL assigns these to properties on an object (both of which are decimals) then returns that object back to the WinForm program that called the DLL. Obviously, there's a lot of other data being consumed from the webservice, but no other operations are happening which could modify these properties. So, the short version is: WinForm requests a new Foo from the DLL. DLL creates object Foo. DLL calls webservice, which returns SomeOtherFoo. //Both Foo.Bar1 and Foo.Bar2 are decimals Foo.Bar1 = decimal.Parse(SomeOtherFoo.Bar1); //SomeOtherFoo.Bar1 is a string equal to "2.9000" Foo.Bar2 = SomeOtherFoo.Bar2; //SomeOtherFoo.Bar2 is a decimal equal to 2.9D DLL returns Foo to WinForm. WinForm.lblMockLabelName1.Text = Foo.Bar1 //Inspecting Foo.Bar1 indicates my value is 2.9D WinForm.lblMockLabelName2.Text = Foo.Bar2 //Inspecting Foo.Bar2 also indicates I'm 2.9D So, what's the quirk? WinForm.lblMockLabelName1.Text displays as "2.9000", whereas WinForm.lblMockLabelname2.Text displays as "2.9". Now, everything I know about C# and VB indicates that the format of the string which was initially parsed into the decimal should have no bearing on the outcome of a later decimal.ToString() operation called on the same decimal. I would expect that decimal.Parse(someDecimalString).ToString() would return the string without any trailing zeroes. Everything I find online seems to corroborate this (there are countless Stack Overflow questions asking exactly the opposite...how to keep the formatting from the initial parsing). At the moment, I've just removed the trailing zeroes from the initial string that gets parsed, which has hidden the quirk. However, I'd love to know why it happens in the first place.

For a previous project I used a library called ftgl that didn't leave me quite satisfied as it felt kind of heavy (I tried all rendering techniques, text rendering didn't scale very well). My question is, is there a good and efficient library for this?, if not, what would be the way to implement fast but nice looking text?.     My mom has a recipe blog in blogger which has many categories "Cakes", "Celebration Day" etc which are filled with numerous recipe posts. Now I want to organize my blog in a better way and make a drop down menu for all the categories(I already have labels) but I dont want to keep updating the menu whenever I include a new post. I want to have it updated automatically. Is there any way it can be done with CSS or html codes?

  • Working the Chart Percentages

    Charting in BIP is such fun, well sometimes it is. Not so much today, at least not for Ron in San Diego. He needed a horizontal bar chart showing values plotted for various test areas with value labels at the end of the bars. Simple enough right? The wrinkle, they were percentage values so he needed to see '56%' not '56'! Still, it should be simple enough but the percentage formatting has a requirement for your values to be in a decimal format i.e. 0.56 not 56.0. 56.0 gets formatted as 5600%. OK, so either pull the values out as decimals or use the div function to divide the values in the chart by 100 e.g. <xsl:value-of select="myval div 100)" /> Now I can use the following the chart XML to format the percentages as I need them:   <Graph ... > ... <MarkerText visible="true"> <Y1ViewFormat> <ViewFormat numberType="NUMTYPE_PERCENT" decimalDigit="0" numberTypeUsed="true" leadingZeroUsed="true" decimalDigitUsed="true"/> </Y1ViewFormat> </MarkerText> ... </Graph>   That gets me the values shown the way I want but the auto axis formatting gets me from 0 >> 1. I now need to go in and add the formatting for the axis too.   <Graph ...> ... <Y1Axis axisMinAutoScaled="false" axisMinValue="0.0" axisMaxAutoScaled="false" axisMaxValue="1.0" majorTickStepAutomatic="true"> <ViewFormat numberType="NUMTYPE_PERCENT" decimalDigit="0" scaleFactor="SCALEFACTOR_NONE" numberTypeUsed="true" leadingZeroUsed="true" decimalDigitUsed="true" scaleFactorUsed="true"/> </Y1Axis>   Now I have a chart that's showing the percentage values and formatting axis scale correctly for me too. I have a development comming that is intended to be sold across Latin America (Spanish speakers), but I've heard from some partners that is a good practice to always code in English, I mean just code (methods, classes, pages names, etc), labels on GUI are going to be all in Spanish... Code will be edited in the future by developer of companies across Latin America and just maybe some from outside. What do you think?, any experience with this?

  • How does SELinux affect the /home directory?

    Hi everyone. I'm migrating a CentOS 5.3 system from MySQL to PostgreSQL. The way our machine is set up is that the biggest disk partition is mounted to /home. This is out of my control and is managed by the hosting provider. Anyway, we obviously want the database files to be on /home for this reason. With MySQL, we did the following: Edited my.cnf and changed the datadir setting to /home/mysql Added a new "File type" policy record (I hope I'm using the right terminology) to set /home/mysql(/.*)? to mysqld_db_t Ran restorecon -R /home/mysql to assign the labels and everything was good. With PostgreSQL, however, I did the following: Edited /etc/init.d/postgresql and changed the PGDATA and PGLOG variables to /home/pgsql/data and /home/pgsql/pgstartup.log, respectively Added a new policy record to set /home/pgsql/pgstartup.log to postgresql_log_t Added a new policy record to set /home/pgsql/data(/.*)? to postgresql_db_t Ran restorecon -R /home/pgsql to assign the labels At this point, I still cannot start PostgreSQL. pgstartup.log says: # cat pgstartup.log postmaster cannot access the server configuration file "/home/pgsql/data/postgresql.conf": Permission denied The weird thing is that I don't see any messages related to this in /var/log/messages or /var/log/secure, but if I turn off SElinux, then everything works. I made sure all the permissions are correct (600 for files and 700 for directories), as well as the ownership (postgres:postgres). Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? I'm using the Yum repository from commandprompt.com, version 8.3.7. EDIT: The reason my question specifically mentions the /home directory is that if I go through all these steps for any other directory, e.g. /var/lib/pgsql2 or /usr/local/pgsql, then it works as expected.

  • Working with barcode fonts in Word

    I need to create labels in Microsoft Word 2010 with numbers encoded as barcodes. The barcode's format (ean, code39, upc, etc) does not matter. I have downloaded a barcode conversion font that I found at this site. When I type the number that I want and then I format it with my new font, it produces a barcode. I then print it on an OKI laser printer (1200 dpi). The result seems to be fine, at least for common people. But, when I try to scan it, nothing happens. I tried both with a barcode scanner and a data collector, but neither of them read the barcode. My barcode scanner is working fine, because I can read commercial barcodes printed on products. Does anybody have any advice? How do I do this kind of stuff? I want to do it using Word because I will generate labels using Mail Merge. Therefore using external programs aren't option for me.

    In an effort further automate all the little computer house keeping tasks that can waste my time I am looking into BitTorrent clients that have the ability to script common tasks. I've done some Googling and it looks like Transmission might have some of said such capabilities, but there site wasn't very clear on the details. Things I am looking to do; Prioritize and label torrents based on trackers Set seed length based on trackers and filesize Set additional seed time when a torrent's seed time expires based on a number of factors, like time spent seeding, remaining disk space and ratio. Move torrents to appropriate places post seeding based on labels and tracker Basically, while I could Python or Bash script things like moving torrents around and other simple actions, I need away to talk to the client to figure out things like the torrent seed time, tracker, labels, filesize, etc. Is there any client out there that would allow me to all or a subset these actions? I have access to Linux, Mac and Windows and am not tied to any particular torrent client. I am a programmer so I have no problems writing scripts, but examples of torrent scripting would also be helpful.

The emails which are sent from Lotus Notes itself has no issues and I'm able to retrieve the inline images by using the document.generateXML() method and parsing through ['picture' xml element tag] the stream. When in asp.net I change the from mail address to username given in NetworkCredential, I recieve mails. But in C# windows application, I can get emails, even if sender's email address is not valid.     This morning we couldn't receive email from outside our company's domain (domain.com.au), but we can send email to outside (e.g hotmail, gmail, yahoo). When I tried to send email to my work email address using my gmail account, I received this message Technical details of permanent failure: Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 550 550 Unable to relay for [email protected] (state 14). I tried using telnet to send email, and it works. But still I couldn't figure out why I can't receive email from outside. I'm not sure if I provided enough info. I'll try to provide as much info as needed to help me solve the problem. Thanks

  • Yahoo flagging mail as spam when using relay server

    I'm using Postfix to relay mail from my site to my mail server. Mail is received properly at my Gmail and Hotmail accounts - only Yahoo is the problem. The Yahoo mail headers state: Received-SPF: none (mta1133.mail.mud.yahoo.com: domain of [email protected] does not designate permitted sender hosts) In contrast, the Gmail headers state: Received-SPF: pass (google.com: domain of [email protected] designates 74.50.xxx.xxx as permitted sender) client-ip=74.50.xxx.xxx; Reverse DNS is set up correctly, as is my SPF record. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do to solve the Yahoo problem (short of contacting Yahoo, as this is a brand new mail server)? FYI - I just set up domainkeys, but I'm not sure whether they should be on the origin or relay server. Thanks

  • Best practices for sending automated daily emails from web service

    I am running a web service that currently sends confirmation emails out to new users via the gmail smtp servers. As I'm only getting a few new users each day, this hasn't been a problem. I've recently added new features to the webapp that will require a customized message to be sent out to each user every day. Think of this as similar to the regular messages LinkedIn sends out that give you a status report on the activity in your network. Every user's message will be different. With thousands of users, this means thousands of unique messages will be sent each day. Edit: I've since found that these types of email are called "transactional or relationship messages". Spamtacular has a good article on differentiating between marketing and transactional email. I don't think using gmail's smtp servers will cut it anymore, but I don't know that for sure. I don't know what gmail's maximum outgoing messages per account is (it might be 100/day), but they limit outgoing mail to 500 recipients per message. I'm not sending a single message to 500 recipients, but I'm going to be sending 1000's of customized messages with each recipient getting one per day. I'm interested to learn any best practices for doing this (especially for Java-based webapps). Here are some of my thoughts and concerns on it: Should I set up my own outgoing mail server? If I do this, it seems like I'll have all sorts of other issues to worry about, such as preventing mail server abuse, monitoring bounces, allowing ways to opt-out of emails, etc. Are there any tools or services to help with this? Maybe something like OpenEMM or a services like MailChimp? But those seem focused more toward email marketing campaigns. I don't think I should have the webapp itself handle sending emails as it currently is for new user signups. I'm thinking I should setup a separate messaging server that can access the same backend/datastore as the webapp. Thoughts on this? Should I consider setting up some sort of message queueing service to help with this, such as JMS, RabbitMQ, ActiveMQ, etc.? Do I need to provide users a way to opt-out? Do I need to flag these as bulk messages? I don't really consider these email marketing messages, but I'm unsure what is considered appropriate or proper netiquette. Any advice is appreciated. I'm also very interested in open source tools or web services that simplify things and could help me to ramp up as quickly as possible. Thanks!
