  • Ubuntu 10.10 not recognizing external hard drive

    Installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a hard drive by itself (no windows). All updates are up to date. Everything`works fine except when I plug in a 320 gig Toshiba external hard drive....it is not recognized. When I plug in an 8 gig flash drive it is recognized no problem. What do I mean by "not recognized"? I mean: how do you know it was not recognized. You can check the command "cat /proc/partitions" in a terminal with and without the hdd attached. If you see some difference, it's ok. If the difference is something like "sda1" (sd+letter+number) then you have partition on it, maybe it can't be handled in Ubuntu (no filesystem on it or so). If there is only "sda" in the difference for example (sd+letter, but no number after it) then the drive itself is detected, just no partition is created on it. Also you can check out the messages of the kernel, with the "dmesg" command in the terminal. If there is no disk/partition/anything in /proc/partitions, there can be an USB level problem, you can issue command "lsusb" as it was suggested before my answer. It's really matter of what do you mean about "not recognized". @Marco Ceppi @Oli @Pitto By "not recognized" I meant that when I plug in a 8 gig flash drive an icon immediately appears on the desktop imdicating that there is a flash drive plugged in and I can click on it and view the files on the flash drive. It also shows up on the "Nautilus" default file manager. When I plug in the 320 gig Toshiba external hard drive, I get no indication on the desktop or the file manager (thus "not recogized"). When I run the command "cat/proc/partitions/" I get an error message Could not open location 'file:///home/bob/cat/proc/partitions' with or without the external hard drive installed. With the "dmeg" command I get about 10 pages of info with no mention of disk/partition/anything in /proc/partitions.   • How can i enable my bluetooth and set-up its adapter config in my Ideapad S100

    I installed Ubuntu 12.04 in my Ideapad S100 it look seem perfect after I installed it, but when i tried to connect my phone via bluetooth, i cannot enable the slide button in the Bluetooth setting and it keeps returning back to "OFF" and the visible button is also in Disable mode. I already tried other solution like installing Blueman, re-write code such as rfkill bluetooth and this echo disable /proc/acpi/ibm/bluetooth. It still doesn't work at all, and regarding to my Wi-Fi i don't have any issue on it.

  • High paid non-finance programming roles? [closed]

    Besides finance (front-office/high frequency trading) developer roles, are there any other very well paid programming roles, specifically for C++ or Java? One particular industry I would find interesting is the energy industry? However, I completed an internship for one of the massive energy companies and their "IT department" was nothing more than Microsoft Access- they outsourced all the technical work to IBM and Accenture.   • Tension between the dependency inversion principle and avoiding "new" in C++?

    I have seen a lot of advice that it is better to do Type object; than Type* object = new Type(); in C++ whenever possible. I understand the rational behind this and appreciate it. But according to my understanding, to practice dependency inversion requires pointers, e.g.: Type* object = new Implementation();. (Or am I wrong about that?) Is there an inherent tension between the DIP and avoiding new when using C++? If so, what patterns/principles/practices can be used to mitigate this tension?

    The main issue Seeing the good support most modern programming platforms have for package management (think gem, npm, pip, etc), does it make sense to design an application or system be composed of internally developed packages, so as to promote and create a loosely coupled architecture? Example An example of this would be to create packages for database access, as well as for authentication and other components of the system. These, of course, use external packages as well. Then, your system imports and uses these packages - instead of including their code within its own code base. Considerations To me, it seems that this would promote code decoupling and help maintainability, almost in a Web-based-vs.-desktop-application kind of way (updates are applied almost automatically, single code base for single functionality, etc.). Does this seem like a rational and sane design concept? Is this actually used as a standard way of structuring applications today? Thanks very much!
