• Munin Aggregated Graphs Configuration Error

  I tried making some Munin Aggregated graphs but somehow I am unable to make the configuration work. I think I have followed the instructions but since its not working, I would love some assistance or guidance as to what I am doing wrong. I want to Aggregate (sum) the total number of requests / second all my nginx servers are doing combined together. • DNS: domain2 points to domain1

  I have one domain ("domain1") that is set up with hosting and mail (hosted by Gmail Apps). This domain works perfectly. I want a second domain ("domain2") to forward to domain1, but I don't want to use "DNS Forwarding." I would like to have it act EXACTLY like domain1, so that domain2/whatever points to the same resource as domain1/whatever WITHOUT AN HTTP REDIRECT NOR BROWSER TRICKS LIKE FRAMES. I would also love to be able to send mail to "blah@domain2" and have it go to "blah@domain1". Can this be set up, and how? I am using GoDaddy as registrar and DNS host for both domains. GoDaddy is also the web host for domain1, and mail hosting is with Google Apps.

• FTP an entire folder via the command line

  I'm looking so migrate some websites to a new server. I have SSH access to the current one but only FTP access to the new one. How can I via Centos and SSH copy entire folders to the new server via FTP? I can log into the new server via the built in FTP client on Centos but I'm not sure of the commands after this. I need to move the httpdocs folder from the old to the public_html folder of the new server. I'd love to do this server to server as it'll be a lot quicker than download - upload via my broadband connection. Yours, Chris

• Is it possible to have an external server with in a companies firewall?

  Hi guys, I am sure this is server admin 101,but I am unsure of the answer and would love some help. I am a software developer I have built an application for a client and am currently hosting it successfully on SliceHost. We are now coming out of Beta and the client wants to have the application within their Firewall, but they do not want to deal with headache of hosting and maintaining the server. Is there a way I can recommend that we put our server at SliceHost within their Firewall? Is that an easy thing to do? If that is not possible, what should I recommend to my client? Thanks! Jonathan

• Slow speeds on Samsung SSD PM800 256gb on a Lenovo W500

  I recently bought a W500 with a 256gb samsung ssd drive. Now it seems ridiculously slow at writing. I am copying files at about 30mb/s, but I can read them at about 200mb/s. I tested it with the AS SSD Benchmark v1.4, and got a sequential writing speed of 34.64mb/s and reading speed of 196.95mb/s When I bought it the drive had only been in use for about 240 hours, and according to the CrystalDiskInfo app it had 98% health. Is there a bottleneck here somewhere? Or is the drive just plain bad. I'd really love it if someone could help me find some answers. The main relevant (I hope) w500 specs for this machine are; T9600 @ 2.8ghz 4gb ddr3

  Im thinking of replacing my HP Pavilion dv5-1004nr with Acer Aspire AS5738-6444, I'm a CS student... so im torn between screen size (liking the 15in and decent gpu.. but it weight nearly 8 pounds and battery can barely last 2 hours in power saver mode) and wanting something portable to carry to classes/take notes ect (3 pounds and up to 8 hour battery life of the acer) what would you guys suggest? acer any good? i love my hp keyboard.. (or have links to other good laptops, im aiming for 600$ range?)

• dead man's switch for remote networking interventions

  Hi, As I'm going to change the network configuration of a remote server, I was thinking of some security mechanisms to protect me from accidentally loosing control on the server. The level-0 protection I'm using is a scheduled system reboot: # at now+x minutes > reboot > ctrl+D where x is the delay before reboot. While this works relatevly well for very simple tasks like playing with iptables this method has at least two drawbacks: It's not very reactive, ie a connectivity problem should be detected automatically if for example an automatic remote ssh command fails does not work anymore for x seconds. It can obviously not work if one need to modify some configuration files and then reboot to test the changes. Are you guys using some tool for the second point ? I would love to have something able to revert the system configuration in a previously known stable state if I can't join the server X minutes after reboot. Thanks!

• Custom Button in Google Chrome?

  Is there a way to add a custom button in Google Chrome? I hate all the "Send to Instapaper" extensions in the web store, and love how the bookmarklet works, but I can't stand not having a favicon. Ideally, I'd just add a custom button next to the spanner in the top right, but I can't figure out how to do this. Even installing a custom extension would be fine, so if someone can point me in the right direction for that, that'd be great.   Server software has been 64-bit only for a while now (Since Server 2008 R2 for Windows, even earlier for Exchange and Sharepoint) and even Ubuntu are pushing you away from 32-bit versions for their server OSes. But is there any good, quantifiable reason to keep a 32-bit desktop operating system maintained? We're preparing our Windows 8 images for the (unfortunate?) few that will be early adopters. The majority of our desktop computers have 4gb or less of RAM, but I would love to not have to bother supporting a 32-bit flavoured operating system any more. Any reason why I should?

• Are there any home/soho NAS devices that will backup/sync to the cloud?

  Looking for a home office (SOHO) market (priced) network hard drive (NAS) that will sync some or all of its content to a cloud-based backup service. The only option I've been able to find so far is NetGear's [ReadyNAS Vault][1] however from what I've read it's not as secure as it could be, and the service is quite expensive ($200/yr for 50GB of cloud storage) - it's 'powered' by ElephantDrive Ideally would love to see something like Wuala integrated into a Lacie Network HDD - conveniently, I suspect this is in the works as Lacie recently acquired Wuala, however nothing has come of it yet. I know there are options to use rsync with a customizable NAS (such as the very versatile and hackable D-Link DNS-323, but the easier this is to setup and maintain, the better. Thanks! ps. • Easy Linux distribution with newer packages than Ubuntu?

  I'm a programmer and sysadmin, and I'm looking for a better Linux distro to use than Ubuntu. It certainly is a well-polished, nice distribution to use, but a lot of the programs available in the Ubuntu repositories are very old versions. Installing PPA's or compiling from source just isn't very nice. I'd love to use something like Arch Linux that uses a rolling release cycle, but I really don't want to configure my system from scratch, and support for ATI Catalyst drivers is necessary. I just want to pop the CD in, install and start using my computer - just like with Ubuntu. Additionally, if you know of a package like ubuntu-restricted-extras for the distribution, that'd be nice! What do you suggest?

• User Friendly port knocker (port knocking client) for Windows?

  It seems "It's me" is the most popular port knocking client for windows… Except… it sucks. It works for console-savvy users such as me, but, unsurprisingly, all my users hate console windows. I know better than to force it upon them. I would love to have a nice port knocker for Windows that would be windowed, have launchers, and be easily provisionable (i.e. I tell my user to paste some settings or import some file by double clicking it). To be honest, just not being console-based would be enough.

• How does Mac's command line compare to Linux?

  I love Ubuntu Linux - especially the commmand line. But I have to admit that, at least for now, Windows is more user-friendly - there's more software for it, more drivers, and more stuff just works. Knowing that Mac is built on Unix makes me wonder if it's the sweet spot between them. But I wonder: how similar is the Mac command line to Linux's bash? Could I pick right up with using vim and bash scripting and git, etc? Would common commands like changing directories be different? Does anybody know an online "compare and contrast" resource?

• Help setting up NSD daemon (DNS server)

  While searching for a secure dns server I came across the NSD project. I was really impressed by what seemed to me the best option out there that's open source. One problem thought their 'tutorial' is really not beginner friendly. I have basic DNS knoledge but what's in there is out of my league. I need to have multiple sites on this CentOS server I've recently got my hands on. They also need to receive email. Details: I have a master host and would love to set this in the way described in the rows that follow: masterhost.com -> ns1.masterhost.com mail.masterhost.com www.masterhost.com addonhost.com -> ns1.masterhost.com mail.masterhost.com www.addonhost.com And so on. • How do you enable syslogd to accept incoming connections on Snow Leopard from remote loggers?

  How do I get syslogd to accept incoming connections from remote hosts on Snow Leopard? I'd like to centralize logging such that various devices and systems send logs to Snow Leopard's syslogd, which normally hangs out on UDP 514. However, I'm unable to get them to successfully be accepted by good ole syslogd. I tcpdumped on the Snow Leopard box to verify that packets are being spouted to port 514 -- they are. I checked that syslogd is listening on 514 -- it's not. Googling around told me that, on older versions of OSX (don't you love the way things change so rapidly on OSX), one just had to add a flag to the syslogd daemon to allow remote; one did this in com.apple.syslogd.plist. However the syslogd daemon has no flags (at least in its man page) that suggests any remote anything. What's the solution to this? Secondary, less import but relevant question: What's 'newsyslog'? I see a plist file but it's not running (apparently). Thanks

• how to lower CPU usage for Ableton Live 8 in Mac OSX 10.6.8

  While running Ableton Live 8 after a project gets to a certain size, the audio starts to get a bit choppy and distorted. My levels are fine and is not the cause of the lag and chop. I have samples set to 1024 and the high quality button selected which I need to hear the sound. I always lower these when I'm recording audio with my mic but I need to have these turned up to be able to mix master the song. Anything I can do to lower the CPU usage? It sucks because I can't even use my iZotope Ozone plug-ins because of their CPU usage and they are AMAZING plug-ins that I would love to use.

• What is the current state of development for the FLAC codec?

  I have a pretty large collection of FLAC files created from my CD collection. I love the FLAC format and the sound quality that you can get from it. Lately, however, I've been trying to write a few tools to manipulate the files and I've been noticing what seems to be a stagnation of the community around the codec. Some of the links on the official FLAC page point to thing that are no longer relevant (7digital, for example, appears to no longer sell FLAC encoded songs). It's pretty hard to find hardware players that support FLAC any more (most noticeably it's not present on lower end players when it used to be, and playback is absent on Android). Programming language tools (Java and .NET libraries) are at best old, and at worst unfinished. What's the current state of FLAC development? Has it been replaced by another codec?

Now I'll be sending alot of emails from my web app to people and this works fine. What I also want is for people to be able to send us email. Please point me in the right direction. • How to add chrome bookmarks to Windows 7 favorites folder (where IE favorites live)

  I just switched to Windows 7 and love the taskbar and library features. If I make a desktop shortcut to a webpage, then it becomes searchable from the taskbar (i.e., press the Win/meta key and type the shortcut's name and it pops up). The IE bookmarks/favorites already come with shortcuts in your "Favorites" folder. Can I programatically do this with my chrome shortcuts? My first thought was to export bookmarks to IE, but I can't find an option in IE that allows me to export bookmarks/favorites as shortcuts. Thanks!

  I really like some of the linux security measures it uses. So what i'd like to do is have WinXP Pro SP3 ask for my user password everytime i try to install/remove software.   I'm looking for VIM replacement. My key points are: Extensible in sane language (such as Python, Ruby, or even Lua, after vimscript everything will do). Also GUI part should be extensible too, so no SublimeText2. GUI. Preferrably GTK+. Lightweight. I don't understand IDEs like Eclipse/NetBeans consuming up to 1G of RAM. File browser panel. Splits, tabs and windows. There should be ability to split views tabs infinite number of times (or while they fit to screen). VCS support (optional: especially Git) Snippets & autocompletion (not mandatory, but I would very love to have those) Any ideas?

  I'm trying to put together a relatively complex flow-chart thing -as part of a University assignment (health-related, and gosh, does my university love all things Microsoft Office...). Because of the way the chart progresses I have to connect two objects with a 'double elbow' version of the 'elbow arrow connector.' I accept that perhaps this complexity means I should redesign the chart, but I've tried and failed to simplify things already. • Make favorites always visible in Windows Explorer

  Vista introduced the favorites in the navigation pane of Windows Explorer. In Windows 7 I immediately noticed that the favorites don't have a separate pane at the top anymore. See this image for a comparison. So to access the favorites (which I do a lot, I love that feature!) I always have to scroll to the top first which is quite annoying. Is there any way to restore the old behavior? I can't believe that they went a step backwards here.

• Virtual machine image compatibility between VMware Server and VMware Player

  I'm trying to minimize the number of different product versions used on my PC's both at work and at home. So far I have a mixture of: VMware Server 1.0.7 VMware Server 2.0.2 VMware Player 2.5.3 VMware Player 3.0.0 and I would love to upgrade each product family to the latest version. Since Virtual Machine Mobility Guide is marked as deprecated, can anyone point me to some fresh information about virtual machine compatibility between VMware Player and VMware Server, in order to still be able to move virtual machines back and forth between the mentioned products? Update What I'm looking for is an updated document with virtual machines hardware versions, and the VMware products that are able to use that specific hardware version, so I can know - given the products that are using a specific virtual machine - what is the maximum hardware version that I can update the virtual machine to.
