• Effective methods for reading and writing large files in C

  I'm writing an application that deals with very large user-generated input files. The program will copy about 95 percent of the file, effectively duplicating it and switching a few words and values in the copy, and then appending the copy (in chunks) to the original file, such that each block (consisting of between 10 and 50 lines) in the original is followed by the copied and modified block, and then the next original block, and so on. The user-generated input conforms to a certain format, and it is highly unlikely that any line in the original file is longer than 100 characters long. Which would be the better approach? a) To use one file pointer and use variables that hold the current position of how much has been read and where to write to, seeking the file pointer back and forth to read and write; or b) To use multiple file pointers, one for reading and one for writing. I am mostly concerned with the efficiency of the program, as the input files will reach up to 25,000 lines, each about 50 characters long. Thanks!

  Does the Prototype Javascript library have a selector that's equivalent to jQuery's :contains()? If not, what would what be "The Prototype Way" to selector/filter-down a list of elements that contains a particular string. For example, using the following $$('#some_div dd a') I may get back an array of 50 or so links. I only want the links that contain the work 'home'. In jQuery I'd do this jQuery('#some_div dd a:contains('home')'); Is it possible to do something similar using Prototype? If not, is there an elegant way to filter out the array of 50 elements that gets returned.

• Storing year/make/model in a database?

  Here's what I'm thinking (excuse the Django format): class VehicleMake(Model): name = CharField(max_length=50) class VehicleModel(Model): make = ForeignKey(VehicleMake) name = CharField(max_length=50) class VehicleYear(Model): model = ForeignKey(VehicleModel) year = PositiveIntegerField() This is going to be used in those contingent drop-down select boxes, which would visually be laid out like [- Year -][- Make -][- Model -]. So, to query the data I need I would first have to select all distinct years from the years table, sorted descending. Then I'd find all the vehicle makes that have produced a model in that year. And then all the models by that make in that year. Is this a good way to do it, or should I re-arrange the foreign keys somehow? Or use a many-to-many table for the years/models so that no year is repeated?

• How do you make an image opened in colorbox scrollable

  I would like my images that I open in colorbox to be displayed fullsize with no resizing applied to them and then apply scrollbars to allow for viewing the larger images. Some of my images are quite tall and things get pixelated when resized down. Currently colorbox just resizes my images down to the size of the available height/width. Is there a way to make all images display fullsize with overflow scrollable in colorbox? • Scale image to completely fill bounding box

  For instance, if I need to fill a bounding box that is 100px wide by 50px tall, the following input images would have the following behavior: 200w x 200h gets scaled down 50% and 25% gets chopped off the top and bottom. 200w x 100h gets scaled down 50% with no cropping. 100w x 200h gets is not scaled, but 75px get chopped off top and bottom. This seems like it'd be a common resizing function, but I haven't been able to track down an example of the algorithm. Will accept answer in any language including pseudo code. A link to a page with the answer is great too!

• Should a connect method return a value?

  I was looking at some code I've inherited and I couldn't decided if I like a bit of code. Basically, there is a method that looks like the following: bool Connect(connection parameters){...} It returns true if it connects successfully, false otherwise. I've written code like that in the past, but now, when I see this method I don't like it for a number of reasons. Its easy to write code that just ignores the returned value, or not realize it returns a value. There is no way to return an error message. Checking the return of the method doesn't really look nice: if (!Connect(...)){....} I could rewrite code to throw an exception when it doesn't successfully connect, but I don't consider that an exceptional situation. Instead I'm thinking of refactoring the code as follows: void Connect(Connection Parameters, out bool successful, out string errorMessage){...} I like that other developers have to provide the success and error strings so they know the method has error conditions and I can know return a message Anyone have any thoughts on the matter? • Is this more suited for key value storage or a tree?

  I'm trying to figure out the best way to represent some data. It basically follows the form Manufacturer.Product.Attribute = Value. Something like: Acme.*.MinimumPrice = 100 Acme.ProductA.MinimumPrice = 50 Acme.ProductB.MinimumPrice = 60 Acme.ProductC.DefaultColor = Blue So the minimum price across all Acme products is 100 except in the case of product A and B. I want to store this data in C# and have some function where GetValue("Acme.ProductC.MinimumPrice") returns 100 but GetValue("Acme.ProductA.MinimumPrice") return 50. I'm not sure how to best represent the data. Is there a clean way to code this in C#?

• Resolve php endless recursion issue

  Hey all, I'm currently running into an endless recursion situation. I'm implementing a message service that calls various object methods.. it's quite similar to observer pattern.. Here's whats going on: Dispatcher.php class Dispatcher { ... public function message($name, $method) { // Find the object based on the name $object = $this->findObjectByName($name); // Slight psuedocode.. for ease of example if($this->not_initialized($object)) $object = new $object(); // This is where it locks up. } return $object->$method(); ... } class A { function __construct() { $Dispatcher->message("B", "getName"); } public function getName() { return "Class A"; } } class B { function __construct() { // Assume $Dispatcher is the classes $Dispatcher->message("A", "getName"); } public function getName() { return "Class B"; } } It locks up when neither object is initialized. It just goes back and forth from message each other and no one can be initialized. I'm looking for some kind of queue implementation that will make messages wait for each other.. One where the return values still get set. I'm looking to have as little boilerplate code in class A and class B as possible Any help would be immensely helpful.. Thanks! Matt Mueller

  Hey all, I was wondering how big companies tend to modularize components on their page. Facebook is a good example: There's a team working on Search that has its own CSS, javascript, html, etc.. There's a team working on the news feed that has its own CSS, javascript, html, etc... ... And the list goes on They cannot all be aware of what everyone is naming their div tags and whatnot, so what's the controller(?) doing to hook all these components in on the final page?? Note: This doesn't just apply to facebook - any company that has separate teams working on separate components has some logic that helps them out. EDIT: Thanks all for the responses, unfortunately I still haven't really found what I'm looking for - when you check out the source code (granted its minified), the divs have UIDs, my guess is that there is a compilation process that runs through and makes each of the components unique, renaming divs and css rules.. any ideas? EDIT 2: Thanks all for contributing your thoughts - the bounty went to the highest upvoted answer. The question was designed to be vague- I think it led to a really interesting discussion. • Sign Up/Login system for multi-domain/multi-server

  I'm thinking about a good solution for implementing a sign up/login system that works across different domains and servers. A working example is Olx (you can register in one domain, and your login will work in the rest of domains). The scenario is that every domain (one per country) has its own database. And there will be 2 servers (for example), each one will have the 50% of the domains (and so the 50% of databases). What would you suggest to start with? Database: MySQL 5.1 Server-side language: PHP 5.3 (I will be using Symfony 1.4, so if someone has some suggestion for this framework, it will be interesting too, although it is optional)

It simply expands the column to fit the text. If I set the Width to a fixed amount on the last column, wrapping works as expected. The problem there is that if the user widens the window, the column stays at a fixed size. How can I get the column to size dynamically with the width of the grid, but still wrap the text within it?

• R ggplot barplot; Fill based on two separate variables

  A picture says more than a thousand words. As you can see, my fill is based on the variable variable. Within each bar there is however multiple data entities (black borders) since the discrete variable complexity make them unique. What I am trying to find is something that makes each section of the bar more distinguishable than the current look. Preferable would be if it was something like shading. • "No database selected" even when db clearly selected

  One of my webpages gets a recurring error: "No database selected", even though the DB is selected. Right about now it's a 50-50 chance whether the page will load just fine, or whether I receive this error. After one or two reloads, the page works again. I am including the exact same connection file on my other pages, and I don't have this problem. What could be the cause of this? I'm using ensim pro for webhosting. TIA.

• Large number of UPDATE queries slowing down page

  I am reading and validating large fixed-width text files (range from 10-50K lines) that are submitted via our ASP.net website (coded in VB.Net). I do an initial scan of the file to check for basic issues (line length, etc). Then I import each row into a MS SQL table. Each DB rows basically consists of a record_ID (Primary, auto-incrementing) and about 50 varchar fields. After the insert is done, I run a validation function on the file that checks each field in each row based on a bunch of criteria (trimmed length, isnumeric, range checks, etc). If it finds an error in any field, it inserts a record into the Errors table, which has an error_ID, the record_ID and an error message. In addition, if the field fails in a particular way, I have to do a "reset" on that field. A reset might consist of blanking the entire field, or simply replacing the value with another value (e.g. replacing the string with a new one that has all illegals chars taken out). I have a 5,000 line test file. The upload, initial check, and import takes about 5-6 seconds. The detailed error check and insert into the Errors table takes about 5-8 seconds (this file has about 1200 errors in it). However, the "resets" part takes about 40-45 seconds for 750 fields that need to be reset. When I comment out the resets function (returning immediately without actually calling the UPDATE stored proc), the process is very fast. With the resets turned on, the pages take 50 seconds to return. My UPDATE stored proc is using some recommended code from http://sommarskog.se/dynamic_sql.html, whereby it uses CASE instead of dynamic SQL: UPDATE dbo.Records SET dbo.Records.file_ID = CASE @field_name WHEN 'file_ID' THEN @field_value ELSE file_ID END, . . (all 50 varchar field CASE statements here) . WHERE dbo.Records.record_ID = @record_ID Is there any way I can help my performance here. Can I somehow group all of these UPDATE calls into a single transaction? Should I be reworking the UPDATE query somehow? Or is it just sheer quantity of 750+ UPDATEs and things are just slow (it's a quad proc server with 8GB ram). Any suggestions appreciated.

  Hey. I'm trying to build a Hibernate Criteria query to find entities that have a specific element inside a collection. We can take as an example a Book -object that looks like this: public class Book { private Long id; private String title; private Set<String> authors = new HashSet<String>(); } The entity is mapped like this: <class name="Book" table="Book"> <id name="id" column="BOOK_ID"> <generator class="native"/> </id> <property name="title"/> <set name="authors" table="Book_Authors"> <key column="BOOK_ID"/> <element type="string" column="AUTHORS"/> </set> </class> Now I would like to find out which books are written by Matt. With pure SQL I can do a query like this: String author = "Matt"; String query = "SELECT * FROM Book " + "WHERE BOOK_ID IN " + "(SELECT BOOK_ID FROM Book_Authors " + "WHERE authors = :author )"; List<Book> result = session.createSQLQuery(query) .addEntity(Book.class) .setParameter("author", author) .list(); This works all good and well, and I get out all books that Matt has been a part of writing. The project I work in, however, uses the Criteria API instead of raw SQL, and I haven't found a way to express the same query in that form. I've taken a look on the Restrictions API and the closest I've found is Restions.in(propertyName, collection) but that works the other way around (one value in object, many values to match against). Any ideas?

• PL/SQL bulk collect into associative array with sparse key

  I want to execute a SQL query inside PL/SQL and populate the results into an associative array, where one of the columns in the SQL becomes the key in the associative array. For example, say I have a table Person with columns PERSON_ID INTEGER PRIMARY KEY PERSON_NAME VARCHAR2(50) ...and values like: PERSON_ID | PERSON_NAME ------------------------ 6 | Alice 15 | Bob 1234 | Carol I want to bulk collect this table into a TABLE OF VARCHAR2(50) INDEX BY INTEGER such that the key 6 in this associative array has the value Alice and so on. Can this be done in PL/SQL? If so, how?
