• Convert a DVD Movie Directly to AVI with FairUse Wizard 2.9

  Are you looking for a way to backup your DVD movie collection to AVI?  Today we’ll show you how to rip a DVD movie directly to AVI with FairUse Wizard. About FairUse Wizard FairUse Wizard 2.9 uses the DivX, Xvid, or h.264 codec to convert DVD to an AVI file. It comes in both a free version and commercial version. The free, or “Light” version, can create files up 700MB while the commercial version can output a 1400MB file. This will allow you to back up your movies to CD, or even multiple movies on a single DVD. FairUse Wizard states that it does not work on copy protected discs, but we’ve seen it work on all but some of the most recent copy protection. For this tutorial we’re using the free Light Edition to convert a DVD to AVI. They also offer a commercial version that you can get for $29.99 and it offers even more encoding possibilities for converting video to you portable digital devices. Installation and Configuration Download and install FairUse Wizard. (Download link below). Once the install is complete, open FairUse Wizard by going to Start > All Programs >  FairUse Wizard 2 >  FairUse Wizard 2.   FairUse Wizard will open on the new project screen. Select “Create a new project” and type a project name into the text box. This will be used as the file output name.  Ex: A project name of Simpsons Movie will give you an output file of Simpsons Movie.avi.   Next, browse for a destination folder for the output file and temp files. Note that you will need a minimum of 6 GB of free disk space for the conversion process. Note: Much of that 6 GB will be used for temporary files that we will delete after the conversion process.   Click on the Options button at the bottom.   Under Preferences, choose your preferred video codec and file output size. XviD and x264 are installed by default. If you prefer to use DivX, you will have to install it separately. Also note the “Two pass” option. Checking the “Two pass” box will encode your video twice for higher quality, but will take more time. Un-checking the box will speed up the conversion process.   Under Audio track, note that English subtitles are enabled by default, so to remove the subtitles, you will need to change the dropdown list so it shows only a dash (-). You can also select “Use TV Mode” if your primary playback will be on a 4:3 TV screen. Click “Next.” Full Auto Mode vs. Manual Mode You should now be back to the initial screen. Next, we’ll need to determine whether or not we can use “Full Auto Mode” to convert the movie. The difference is that “Full Auto Mode” will automatically perform a few steps that you will otherwise have to do manually. If you choose the “Full Auto Mode” option, FairUse Wizard will look for the video on the DVD with the longest duration and assume it is the chain that it should convert to AVI. It’s possible, however, your disc may contain a few chains of similar size, such as a theatrical cut and director’s cut, and the longest chain may not be the one you wish to convert. Make sure that “Full auto mode” is not checked yet, and click “Next.”   FairUse Wizard will parse the IFO files and display all video chains longer than 60  seconds. In most cases, you will only find that the largest chain is the one closely matching the duration of the movie. In these instances, you can use “Full Auto Mode.” If you find more than one chain that are close in duration to the length of the movie, consult the literature on the DVD case, or search online, to find the actual running time of the movie. If the proper file chain is not the longest chain, you won’t be able to use “Full Auto Mode.”   Full Auto Mode To use “Full Auto Mode,” simply click the “Back” button to return to the initial screen Now, place a check in the “Full auto mode” check box. Click “Next.” You will then be prompted to chose your DVD drive, then click “OK.” FairUse Wizard will parse the IFO files… … and then prompt you to Select your drive that contains the DVD one more time before beginning the conversion process. Click “OK.”   Manual Mode If you cannot (or don’t wish to) use Full Auto Mode, choose the appropriate video chain and click “Next.” FairUse Wizard will first go through the process of indexing the video. Note: If you get a runtime error during this portion of the process, it likely means that FairUse Wizard cannot handle the copy protection, and thus cannot convert the DVD. FairUse Wizard will automatically detect a cropping region. If necessary, you can edit the cropping region by adjusting the cropping region settings to the left. Click “Next.” Next, click “Auto Detect” to choose the proper field combination. Click “OK” on the pop up window that displays your Field Mode. Then click “Next.” This next screen is mainly comprised of settings from the Options screen. You can make changes at this point such as codec or output size. Click “Next” when ready.   Video Conversion Now the video conversion process will begin. This may take a few hours depending on your system’s hardware. Note: There is a check box to “Shutdown computer when done” if you choose to run the conversion overnight or before leaving for work. The first phase will be video encoding… Then the audio… If you chose the “Two Pass” option, your video video will be encoded again on 2nd pass. Then you’re finished. Unfortunately, FairUse Wizard doesn’t clean up after itself very well. After the process is complete, you’ll want to browse to your output directory and delete all the temporary files as they take up a considerable amount of hard drive space. Now you’re ready to enjoy your movie. Conclusion FairUse Wizard is a nice way to backup your DVD movies to good quality .avi files. You can store them on your hard drive, watch them on a media PC, or burn them to disc. Many DVD players even allow for playback of DivX or XviD encoded video from a CD or DVD. For those of you with children, you can burn that AVI file to CD for your kids, and keep your original DVDs stored safely out of harms way. • What is hiberfil.sys and How Do I Delete It?

  You’re no doubt reading this article because there’s a gigantic hiberfil.sys file sitting in the root of your drive, and you want to get rid of it to free up some space… but you can’t! Luckily, you actually can delete it, and today we’ll show you how. The more memory you have in your PC, the bigger the file will be. So What is hiberfil.sys Anyway? Windows has two power management modes that you can choose from: one is Sleep Mode, which keeps the PC running in a low power state so you can almost instantly get back to what you were working on. The other is Hibernate mode, which completely writes the memory out to the hard drive, and then powers the PC down entirely, so you can even take the battery out, put it back in, start back up, and be right back where you were. Hibernate mode uses the hiberfil.sys file to store the the current state (memory) of the PC, and since it’s managed by Windows, you can’t delete the file. So if you never use it, and want to disable Hibernate mode, keep reading. Personally I stick with Sleep Mode the vast majority of the time, but I do use Hibernate quite often. Disable Hibernate (and Delete hiberfil.sys) in Windows 7 or Vista You’ll need to open an administrator mode command prompt by right-clicking on the command prompt in the start menu, and then choosing Run as Administrator. Once you’re there, type in the following command: powercfg -h off You should immediately notice that the Hibernate option is gone from the Shut down menu. You’ll also notice that the file is magically gone! Disabling Hibernate Mode in Windows XP It’s a lot easier in Windows XP to get rid of Hibernate mode… in fact, we’ve already covered it before, but we’ll cover it again. Just head into Control Panel –> Power Options, and then find the Hibernate tab. Uncheck the box, reboot your PC, and then you can delete the hiberfil.sys file. The video feed has a content type of 'multipart/x-mixed-replace; boundary=--myboundary' with the image data between the boundaries. I need assistance with passing that stream of data through to my page so that the client side plugin I have can consume the stream just as it would if I browsed to the camera's web interface directly.   We have a C++/CLI mixed mode assembly out of which we produce an XML file that we use for both, Sandcastle documentation and Intellisense. We use a tool which scans the assembly and create all entries for us, unfortunately I don't know how this tool works and it is unable to handle method signatures like: void foo([Out] long bar); The XML file is expected this parameter to be System.Int32!CompilerServices.IsLong@ but our tool just can't handle that. In other words, how do you scan an assembly to create the XML file needed for Intellisense?

• How do I get python to load .NET .dlls referenced by mixed mode .dlls?

  I have a python .pyd that is a mixed mode C++ DLL. The DLL loads fine and loads unmanaged C++ dlls without a problem, but when it tries to load the .NET dlls referenced by the managed C++ dlls it fails with this error message: Unhandled Exception: System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly '...' Copying these .NET dlls to the directory that pythod_d.exe is contained in allows the .NET libraries to load successfully, but this is not a good long term solution. Is there an environment variable I have to set or some command line option to python_d.exe that will solve my problem? Note that using IronPython or Python .NET is NOT acceptable.

• MySQL: Is it possible to return a "mixed" dataset?

  Hi, I'm wondering if there's some clever way in MySQL to return a "mixed/balanced" dataset according to a specific criterion? To illustrate, let's say that there are potential results in a table that can be of Type 1 or Type 2 (i.e. a column has a value 1 or 2 for each record). Is there a clever query that would be able to directly return results alternating between 1 and 2 in sequence: 1st record is of type 1, 2nd record is of type 2, 3rd record is of type 1, 4th record is of type 2, etc... Apologies if the question is silly, just looking for some options. Of course, I could return any data and do this in PHP, but it does add some code. Thanks.

  I have a PHP page that contains html and tags and PHP codes and I am using AJAX to manipulate some data and now I need to spit out the response but I am not sure if it is possible to put the mixed content into a string variable to pass through... Is this possible? For example I need to: $response = "<p>some text--<?php echo $something; ?>"; Thanks... To clear things up, I am not trying to send raw PHP code to clientside as that would be silly and won't be evaluated as it is a server side script. I am just looking for a fast way to put everything into a variable without manually re-doing the whole page stripping out the php open and close tags and echos...etc

• CKEDITOR - Is there anyway to prevent formatting code in SOURCE mode?

  I've spent the good portion of my day trying to figure this out, and I figured I'd finally just give in and ask. How can you prevent ANY automatic formatting when in SOURCE mode? I like to edit HTML source code directly instead of using the WYSIWYG interface, but whenever I write new lines, or layout tags how I would indent them, it all gets formatted when I switch to WYSIWYG mode and then back to SOURCE mode again. I stumbled upon this earlier: http://dev.fckeditor.net/ticket/993 That alluded to a setting which may have existed once upon a time which would be exactly what I'm after. I just want to know how I can completely turn off all automatic formatting when editing in SOURCE mode. After browsing this site for hours on end and finding absolutely nothing on here or on Google, I came up with a solution I thought would be foolproof (albeit not a pleasant one). I learned about the "protectedSource" setting, so I thought, well maybe I can just use that and create an HTML comment tag before all my HTML and another after it and then push a regular expression finding the comment tags into the protectedSource array, but even that (believe it or not) doesn't work. I've tried my expression straight up in the browser outside of CKEDITOR and it is working, but CKEDITOR doesn't protect the code as expected (which I suspect is a bug involving comment tags, since I can get it to work with other strings). In case you are wondering, this is what I had hoped would work as a work-around, but doesn't: config.protectedSource.push( /<!-- src -->[\s\S]*<!-- end src-->/gi ); .. and what I planned on doing (for what appears to be the lack of a setting to disable formatting in SOURCE mode) was to nest all my HTML within the commented tags like this: <!-- src --> <div>some code that shouldn't be messed with (but is)</div> <!-- end src --> I'd love to hear if you anyone has any suggestions for this scenario, or knows of a setting which I have described, or even if someone can just fill me in as to why I can't get protectedSource to work properly with two comment tags. I really thing it's gotta be a bug because I can get so many other expressions to work fine, and I can even protect HTML within the area of a single comment tag, but I simply cannot get HTML within two different comment tags to stay untouched. :( I've wasted about 6-7 hours on this so far today so if anyone can shed any light on it I would be very grateful! • VS2008 Link Error Using SafeInt3.hpp in 64bit mode.

  I have the below code that links and runs fine in 32bit mode - #include "safeint3.hpp" typedef SafeInt<SIZE_T> SAFE_SIZE_T; SAFE_SIZE_T sizeOfCache; SAFE_SIZE_T _allocateAmt; Where safeint3.hpp is current version that can be found on Codeplex SafeInt. For those who are unaware of it, safeint is a template class that makes working with different integer types and sizes "safe". To quote channel 9 video on software - "it writes the code that you should". Which is my case. I have a class that is managing a large in-memory cache of objects (6gb) and I am very concerned about making sure that I don't have overflow/underflow issues on my pointers/sizes/other integer variables. In this use, it solves many problems. My problem is coming when moving from 32bit dev mode to 64bit production mode. When I build the app in this mode, I'm getting the following linker warnings - 1>cachecontrol.obj : warning LNK4006: "bool __cdecl IntrinsicMultiplyUint64(unsigned __int64 const &,unsigned __int64 const &,unsigned __int64 *)" (?IntrinsicMultiplyUint64@@YA_NAEB_K0PEA_K@Z) already defined in ImageInRamCache.obj; second definition ignored 1>cachecontrol.obj : warning LNK4006: "bool __cdecl IntrinsicMultiplyInt64(__int64 const &,__int64 const &,__int64 *)" (?IntrinsicMultiplyInt64@@YA_NAEB_J0PEA_J@Z) already defined in ImageInRamCache.obj; second definition ignored While I understand I can ignore the error, I would like either (a) prevent the warning from occurring or (b) make it disappear so that my QA department doesn't flag it as a problem. And after spending some time researching it, I cannot find a way to do either.

This is not quite optimal, since restarting the service is a bad idea while other LUNs are busy, so I am looking for a more scalable and safer way. Thanks

• How do I silence strace's message "[ Process PID=15733 runs in 64 bit mode. ]" ?

  I'm using memoize.py, but strace keeps injecting the following into the program output each time a process is executed: [ Process PID=15733 runs in 64 bit mode. ] or [ Process PID=16503 runs in 32 bit mode. ] How can I silence strace such that it doesn't inject these statements into the log file? At the very least, I'd like these statements to only go into the output file that memoize.py is instructing strace to use. It's already telling strace to put its output into a specific file ithrough arguments -o /tmp/OUTFILE. Note that strace is being called with the -f parameter to follow child processes.

• How can I disable the automatic switch to "library" mode in Windows 7's Media Player 12?

  Whenever I plug any USB device into my computer while running Windows Media Player 12 in Windows 7, it will automatically swtich the player from the Now Playing mode to Library mode. This is intended to faciliate syncing between Media Player and MP3 players, but it happens for any USB device. I'd like this to not happen since it's infuriating to see this take place while I'm watching something on a separate screen in Media Player just from plugging in a USB key. This has nothing to do with Windows autorun, and nothing to do with versions of Windows pre-7. And no, switching to some other video player is not an option; I've tried them all, none are as good as stock Media Player in 7.

• Sendmail Tuning For Batch Mail Jobs

  I have a webservers that send out emails to a sendmail relay server as a batch job. The emails need to be accepted by the relay sendmail server as fast as possible, however, they do not need to go out (be relayed) very quickly. I am seeing a couple timeouts once and a while from the webserver trying to connect to the relay server. The load currently is about 30 emails a second for a couple minutes. There are quite a few tuning options for sendmail in the sendmail tuning guide. What I am focusing on now is the Delivery Mode: Delivery Mode There are a number of delivery modes that sendmail can operate in, set by the DeliveryMode ( d) configuration option. These modes specify how quickly mail will be delivered. Legal modes are: i deliver interactively (synchronously) b deliver in background (asynchronously) q queue only (don't deliver) d defer delivery attempts (don't deliver) There are tradeoffs. Mode i gives the sender the quickest feedback, but may slow down some mailers and is hardly ever necessary. Mode b delivers promptly but can cause large numbers of processes if you have a mailer that takes a long time to deliver a message. Mode q minimizes the load on your machine, but means that delivery may be delayed for up to the queue interval. Mode d is identical to mode q except that it also prevents lookups in maps including the -D flag from working during the initial queue phase; it is intended for ``dial on demand'' sites where DNS lookups might cost real money. Some simple error messages (e.g., host unknown during the SMTP protocol) will be delayed using this mode. Mode b is the usual default. If you run in mode q (queue only), d (defer), or b (deliver in background) sendmail will not expand aliases and follow .forward files upon initial receipt of the mail. This speeds up the response to RCPT commands. Mode i should not be used by the SMTP server. I currently have the CentOS default modes: Sendmail.cf: DeliveryMode=background Submit.cf: DeliveryMode=i Is sendmail.cf/mc for outgoing email from relay (to the intertubes) and sumbit.cf/mc for incoming eamil (from my webservers). Would it make sense to change the outgoing delivery mode to queue? If I did, what would the outbound email flow behave like? If this is the right thing to do, can anyone show me example mc configurations for this change? If it isn't, what recommendations are there for these constraints?

  I have an Excel document that is stored on a SharePoint Server, which I always have open on my computer in read-only mode because I need to refer to it. Every so often, in order to get the latest changes, I have to close down the file and reload it again. Are there any options within Excel 2007 which allow me to simply refresh a document I have open in read-only mode to the latest version on the server? Better still, is there a way where this could be done dynamically, without me having to hit refresh?

When any user creates a file or a folder on the server I want the file or folder to get the following RWX permissions: Folders: drwxrws--- Files: -rwxrws--- To set the permissions like this manually I use chmod 2770 which works great. But I want this to happen automatically and therefore I've added the following lines to smb.conf: create mask = 2770 directory mask = 2770 force create mode = 2770 force directory mode = 2770 But when I test by creating a file in one of the folders it get's these permissions: Folder: drwxrwx File: -rwxrw---- What am I overlooking or doing wrong? Is the order of the lines relevant? Does the setgid digit (the 2 in 2770) mess things up?

• Can I run my MacBook in clamshell mode without being connected to power?

  Hi, At home, I run my MacBook in clamshell mode (closed lid, external display). This works fine when you're connected to the power adapter, but it doesn't work when running on battery. That's how it's supposed to be and Apple has some kb entry on the issue. But it's also lame. You can prevent the machine from sleeping when closed by running InsomniaX, but then it'll assume the builtin display is still active, so you end up with a two-display setup when you really only want the external. This is obviously less than ideal. So, is there any work around, hack, utility, black magic that I can use to make it run in clamshell mode while strictly on battery power? Also, bonus points for a solution that makes the AC status not affect the machine state at all. (Like, you know, it does normally, when not in clamshell.)

Tracert resolves the name or the XP notebook but also returns a destination host unreachable. From the above it would seem that something is blocking connectivity in a single direction (from the Win 7 box to the Win XP notebook) only but the router can ping the XP notebook. Some fresh input would be most welcome, as this is beginning to drive me batty. Thanks

• Does Exchange Cache Mode affect email markers refresh time in other Outlook clients?

  We have users who share a single email account by using the Additional Email option under their accounts. Now, they want to assign emails to one another using the markers alongside the emails. We noticed that when changing the color of a marker, one Outlook client updated immediately, but another Outlook client did not. It looked like they were both set to "Cached Mode". Is it likely that caching effected the refresh of the client? Would it be better to turn off cached mode if we are using Outlook this way?
