  Not really a question but I'm looking for comments/suggestions from anyone who has experiences using one or more of the following: EhCache with RMI EhCache with JGroups EhCache with Terracotta Gigaspaces Data Grid A bit of background: our applications is read only for the most part but there is some user data that is read-write and some that is only written (and can also be reasonably inaccurate). In addition, it would be nice to have tools that enable us to flush and fill the cache at intervals or by admin intervention. Regarding the first option - are there any concerns about the overhead of RMI and performance of Java serialization?

• write cache and write sequence order

  ok, here i have some weird question: let say we have some binary file (.log), and sequence of write operations, for example log1, log2, log3 and each has some block size n (raw data). question: can I be sure that log1,log2 and log3 sequences can be written in the correct order in ONE file, even if i have few cache levels (disk hardware and os level)? update very interested in what will be with records order (not with records) if we have software or hardware failure (reboot or another reason). update there can be some percent of write failures, but main question is: will write order stay correct?

• Cache an FTP connection for use via AJAX?

  I'm working on a Ruby web Application that uses the Net::FTP library. One part of it allows users to interact with an FTP site via AJAX. When the user does something, and AJAX call is made, and then Ruby reconnects to the FTP server, performs an action, and outputs information. Every time the AJAX call is made, Ruby has to reconnect to the FTP server, and that's slow. Is there a way I could cache this FTP connection? I've tried caching in the session hash, but "We're sorry, but something went wrong" is displayed, and a TCP dump is outputted in my logs whenever I attempt to store it in the session hash. I haven't tried memcache yet. Any suggestions?

• Strange "cache" effect between client and server

  I use a Socket-based connection between Client and server with ObjectOutputStream. The objects serialized and exchanged have this structure: public class RichiestaSalvataggioArticolo implements Serializable { private ArticoloDati articolo; public RichiestaSalvataggioArticolo(ArticoloDati articolo) { this.articolo = articolo; } @Override public void ricevi(GestoreRichieste gestore) throws Exception { gestore.interpreta(this); } public ArticoloDati getArticolo() { return articolo; } } the issue is that when I try to exchange messages between C/S with incapsulated content very similar (ArticoloDati whom differ only in 2 fields out of 10), the Client sends an ArticoloDati, but the Server receives the previous one. Does the ObjectOutputStream implement some kind of cache or memory between the calls, that fails to recognize that my 2 objects are different because they are very similar?

• Hibernate + Spring + session + cache

  We are using Hibernate with Spring for our Java application. We find out that when a session update something in database other sessions can not see the update. For example user1 get the account balance from database then user2 increase the balance , if user1 get the object another time he see the account balance before updating (seems that session use the value from its cache) but we want to get the updated object with new account balance. User1 use one session during all activity that is different from user2 session. Is any configuration to force to get the updated object from database? or any other help?

• Start all tab's activities for pre-cache

  I have a TabActivity with three tabs defined. The first tab is light-weight and renders in acceptable time. But the 2nd and 3rd tab, does need a couple of seconds to get visually rendered, after I click them. I would like to launch them, after I've loaded my first tab, in background for pre-cache. Once they are loaded, I can switch quickly between them. So I am wondering how can I launch the 2nd and 3rd tab. They are intents loaded in the view area.

• Improve C function performance with cache locality?

  I have to find a diagonal difference in a matrix represented as 2d array and the function prototype is int diagonal_diff(int x[512][512]) I have to use a 2d array, and the data is 512x512. This is tested on a SPARC machine: my current timing is 6ms but I need to be under 2ms. Sample data: [3][4][5][9] [2][8][9][4] [6][9][7][3] [5][8][8][2] The difference is: |4-2| + |5-6| + |9-5| + |9-9| + |4-8| + |3-8| = 2 + 1 + 4 + 0 + 4 + 5 = 16 In order to do that, I use the following algorithm: int i,j,result=0; for(i=0; i<4; i++) for(j=0; j<4; j++) result+=abs(array[i][j]-[j][i]); return result; But this algorithm keeps accessing the column, row, column, row, etc which make inefficient use of cache. Is there a way to improve my function?

• Apache2 Enabling Includes module causes svn access to quit working

  I have dav_svn installed to provide http access to my svn repos. The url is directly under root, eg mywebsite.com/svn/individual-repo. This setup has been working great for some time. Now, I need SSI (server-side includes) for a project, so I enabled this module with a2enmod include. Now, tortoisesvn can't access the repo; it always returns a 301 permanent redirect. Some playing with it reveals I can access it in a browser if I'm sure to include the trailing / but it still doesn't work in TortoiseSVN. I've looked at all of the faq's for this problem with TortoiseSVN and apache, and none of them seem to apply to my problem. Anyone have any insight into this problem? I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 with Apache 2.2.12. The only change I've made to my configuration is to enable the includes mod. Here's my dav_svn conf: <Location /svn> DAV svn SVNParentPath /home/matthew/svn AuthType Basic AuthName "Subversion repository" AuthUserFile /etc/subversion/passwd Require valid-user </Location> and here's the relevant part of my virtual host conf: <Location /svn> SetHandler None Order allow,deny Allow from all </Location> Edit: OK, I've discovered that the real conflict is between the include module and basic authentication. That is, if I disable the include module, browse to the subversion repo, enter my user/pass for the basic authentication, I can browse it just fine. It even continues to work after I re-enable the include module. However, if I browse with another browser where I'm not already authenticated, then it no longer works.

• Page reload needed several times before loading normally

  Sorry my question is so vague I just have no idea where to start in solving it and am quite a novice with servers. Recently my site (an https connection, running on an Amazon EC2 ubuntu apache2.2) has this issue where I need to load the page several times (3-4) before it will load normally without issue. It will then load normally as long as I keep loading pages regularly (every couple seconds). It will stall again if I don't load pages for a few minutes. It has nothing to do with my application because I don't have this problem with the exact same app codebase on my Apache installation on my laptop. The only thing to my knowledge that I changed is that I installed mod_pagespeed https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/mod. However, I have since turned it off by setting my pagespeed.conf to mod_pagespeed off. Unfortunately, that didn't solve the problem. I'm wondering general advice on how to troubleshoot this problem. For instance are there linux commands to check page loading peformance? Also, it looks like I have lots of new error.logs in my /var/log/apache2 directory which i believe weren't there a few months ago. lots of this : error.log RewriteLog.log.24.gz ssl_access.log.40.gz error.log.1 RewriteLog.log.25.gz ssl_access.log.41.gz error.log.10.gz RewriteLog.log.26.gz ssl_access.log.42.gz error.log.11.gz RewriteLog.log.27.gz any thoughts? thank you, tim

  I'm having a huge problem getting mod_mono and apache configured to work correctly. I've had this working at one time, but I can't seem to figure out where i'm going wrong. I'm using mono-server4. I'm trying to use a seperate port from the main website. So I have in /etc/apache2/sites-available (with a link from sites-enabled) a vhost configuration that looks like this: <VirtualHost *:9999> ServerName XXX ServerAdmin web-admin@XXX DocumentRoot /var/xxx MonoServerPath XXX "/usr/bin/mod-mono-server4" MonoDebug XXX true MonoSetEnv XXX MONO_IOMAP=all MonoApplications XXX "/:/var/xxx" <Location "/"> Allow from all Order allow,deny MonoSetServerAlias XXX SetHandler mono SetOutputFilter DEFLATE SetEnvIfNoCase Request_URI "\.(?:gif|jpe?g|png)$" no-gzip dont-vary </Location> <IfModule mod_deflate.c> AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/plain text/xml text/javascript </IfModule> </VirtualHost> I used mono-server4-admin to create the application mono-server4-admin --path=/var/xxx --app=/XXX --port=9999 When i start apache, it gives the error: Syntax error on line 13 of /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/xxx: Server alias 'XXX, not found. This corresponds with the MonoSetServerAlias statement. So I commented it out, and when I do that apache starts. However, when I try to access the site, I get a 500 error. The access log indicates that it's trying to access the app on port 80, rather than 9999. I'm not sure what the problem is here. Can anyone help me get figure out where I went wrong? • Install mod_perl2 on Apache 2.2.14 (Ubuntu10.04)

  Hi guys, I have installed via synaptic package ibapache2-mod-perl2. I tried this line in httpd.conf: "LoadModule perl_module modules/mod_perl.so" Apache tells me when I reload the server : "[warn] module perl_module is already loaded, skipping". Well ok, but when i try to look in the browser to a repertory i don't have access .Apache send me the error : Forbidden You don't have permission to access /cgi-bin/ on this server. Apache/2.2.14 (Ubuntu) Server at 192.168.0.10 Port 90 But this should show modperl is installed and that's not the case... • mod_rewrite redirect subdomain to folder

• How can use mod_rewrite to redirect a multiple specific URLs containing multiple query strings?

  Hi there folks, we recently migrated a site from a custom CMS to drupal. In an effort to preserve some links that our users bookmarked (we have about 120 redirects) we would like to forward the original URLs to a new URL. I have been searching for a couple days, but can't seem to find anything simple to what I need. We have existing URLS that contain one or more query strings, for example: /article.php?issue_id=12&article_id=275 and we would like to forward to the new location: http://foobar.edu/content/super-happy-fun-article I started using: RewriteEngine On RewriteRule ^/article\.php?issue_id=12&article_id=275$ http://foobar.edu/content/super-happy-fun-article [R=301,L] This, however, does not work. A simple RewriteRule works: RewriteRule ^test\.php$ index.php It is unclear to me how I need to use {QUERY_STRING} with multiple Basically it's 120 simple redirects that go from one existing URL to a new one. I don't need ranges [0-9], because there is no sequential order to existing URLs. Perhaps I can do what I need with RewriteMap and a simple text file that contains a line like this: index.php?issue_id=12&articleType_section=0&articleType_id=65 http://foobar.edu/category/fall-2008 If anyone has any idea on using mod_rewrite to accomplish this or if there is a better, or more simple mod, I am open to that as well. • How to get apache to look for files in different subfolders folders?

  I am definitely new to mod-rewrite stuff. Note:- here the URL is common, and all the folders and subfolders on same host. The url a user uses to access their page is http://myurl.com/1234/filename.jpg Here the name of the subfolder is an integer is unique and generated dynamically by another application. The subfolder stores images specific to an individual user. So the folder structure is as follows main1 = document root main2 is another folder within main1 or document root. /main1/1234/filename.jpg /main1/5678/filename.jpg /main1/2345/filename.jpg /main1/1212/filename.jpg /main1/main2/2367/filename.jpg /main1/main2/8790/filename.jpg /main1/main2/9966/filename.jpg So, I want to write a rewrite a rule so that if a user tries to type in http://myurl.com/1234/filename.jpg, the rewrite rule will need to look where the file is and serve the request; so for request http:/myurl.com/1234/filename.jpg the actual page is located at /main1/1234/filename.jpg and then need to serve that page from that folder. So, if another users makes a request as http://myurl.com/9966/filename.jpg, it should serve the page from the following destination /main1/main2/9966/filename.jpg Please let me know if the question is still not clear. This is what i have done so far and does not work at all.
