• Is There a Good Pattern for Creating a Unique Id based on a Type?

  I have a template that creates a unique identifier for each type it is instanced. Here's a streamlined version of the template: template <typename T> class arType { static const arType Id; // this will be unique for every instantiation of arType<>. } // Address of Id is used for identification. #define PA_TYPE_TAG(T) (&arType<T >::Id) This works when you have an executable made purely of static libraries. Unfortunately we're moving to an executable made up of dlls. Each dlls could potentially have its own copy of Id for a type. One obvious solution is to explicitly instantiate all instances of arType. Unfortunately this is cumbersome, and I'd like to ask if anyone can propose a better solution?

  I need to write a process controller module on Linux that handles tasks, which are each made up of multiple executables. The input to the controller is an XML file that contains the path to each executable and list of command line parameters to be passed to each. I need to implement the following functionality: Start each executable as an independent Be able to kill any of the created processes independent of the others In order to do (2), I think I need to capture the pid when I create a process, to issue a system kill command. I tried to get access to pid in Java but saw no easy way to do it. All my other logic (putting info about the tasks in DB, etc) is done in Java so I'd like to stick with that, but if there are solutions you can suggest in C, C++, or Python I'd appreciate those, too.

• What does static linking against a library actually do?

  Say I had a library called libfoo which contained a class, a few static variables, possibly something with 'C' linkage, and a few other functions. Now I have a main program which looks like this: int main() { return 5+5; } When I compile and link this, I link against libfoo. Will this have any effect? Will my executable increase in size? If so, why? Do the static variables or their addresses get copied into my executable? Apologies if there is a similar question to this or if I'm being particularly stupid in any way.

  hi, i want to generate all the subsets of size k from a set. eg:-say i have a set of 6 elements, i have to list all the subsets in which the cardinality of elements is 3. I tried looking for solution,but those are code snippets. Its been long since I have done coding,so I find it hard to understand the code and construct a executable program around it. • Language bar switched input types on me.

  I learned Japanese, but I'm not native to Japan, so I never had a Japanese keyboard. I used to use the language bar to go back and forth between English and Japanese, simply typing the words in romaji and having windows convert it into either hiragana, katakana and sometimes Kanji. Suddenly, my input type changes. I am no longer able to simply type in English, it changed my keyboard into a native Japanese keyboard, and what's worse it doesn't even allow me to write in hiragana, which I would need way more than katakana. Can anyone tell me how to restore it to the old setting where I simply chose what the output dialect would be, and typed the words phonetically in english and have it translate the sounds for me into japanese characters?

• Generate Windows .lnk file with PHP

  Hello, I'm working on a project which involves an FTP server running ProFTPd and a PHP/MySQL backend that creates accounts for users. Upon the creation of accounts, users are sent e-mails with their account details and instructions for downloading FileZilla or CyberDuck, depending on their OS, detected via user-agent string. To make things easier for novices, I thought of having .lnk files generated for FileZilla with the account logins details as parameters, so they would just have to click on the .lnk files to open up the server. This is not crucial feature but more of a technical challenge. My questions are : is this even feasible ? are there any alternatives (eg. generating a .bat with a script pointing to the Filezilla executable ?) are there any issues, perhaps with relative / absolute paths pointing to the executable ? to go even further, what would be the simplest way of providing users with software with FTP access on a single account / single server (web interface is not an option).

• How to call a program and exit from the shell (the caller) when program is active?

  I want to run a program with GUI, by typing into konsole: foo args … and exit from the shell (that's the caller) when the program (foo) is active. How do I this? Is there a Linux/Unix built-in command/program to do it? I'm not a shell-man, really. I know that it's possible by writing a small program in C or C++ (any other programming language with small I/O interface on POSIX) programming language with the fork() and one-of exec*() function family. It may take some time; I'll do it only if there is no native solution. Sorry for my bad English; it's not my native language. Also, not sure on tags, please edit for me, if I'm wrong. If it matters, I'm using OpenSUSE 10.x.

• Is WinRT really as secure as it's made out to be?

  Prior to releasing Windows 8, Microsoft claimed that all WinRT apps are cleanly removed from your computer after uninstalling them, and that WinRT apps should not interfere with other running applications, because they are ran in a "sandboxed" environment. Microsoft has also claimed numerous times on Channel9 that Windows 8 apps are not ran in a VM. So my question is; are these claims accurate? If the application is not running inside of a VM, how is it possible to protect the system against malicious code at runtime, assuming the attacker was able to bypass the screening process of the Windows Store system? Microsoft allows "native code" in WinRT apps, so wouldn't it be possible (using hand-coded assembly or some odd pointer manipulation trick to call functions outside of the sandboxed environment and interfere with the rest of the system, if it's really "native code" and not some VM?

• Linux binary built for 2.0 kernel wouldn't execute on 2.6.x kernel.

  I was installing a binary Linux application on Ubuntu 9.10 x86_64. The app shipped with an old version of gzip (1.2.4), that was compiled for a much older kernel: $ file gzip gzip: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.0.0, stripped I wasn't able to execute this program. If I tried, this happened: $ ./gzip -bash: ./gzip: No such file or directory ldd was similarly unhappy with this binary: $ ldd gzip not a dynamic executable This isn't a showstopper for me, since my installation has a working version of gzip I can use. But I'm curious: What's the most likely source of this problem? A corrupted file? Or a binary incompatibility due to being built for a much older {kernel,libc,...}?

• How to hide keys in application?

  I have a C++ client/server application where the client and server are my executable. Each time a connection is made between the client and server, I generate a new encryption key for that session and I wish to transmit this session key and encrypt this session key using a static key that is built into both the client and server. However, running strings on my executable reveals the static key. How can I hide the embedded static key in my client and server application so that they are not easily extracted and thus allowing someone to decode my session key.

• Why isn't Adobe software multilingual?

  I work in a design studio with several non-native English speakers (in this case, into Japanese and Chinese). I have installed the latest Creative Suite (CS5) on our mac stations and was once again disappointed that unlike so many modern software packages there is still no option to change the language of the software. Most of the team has been good enough to work on their English, but it would be much more helpful for them to work in their native language. Why does Adobe continue to require separate licenses based on language? Are they operating under the assumption that only a single language is ever spoken in any given country? Are there any other third party options or does Adobe at least have some sort of statement regarding this policy?

• Can Windows 7 place a task bar on each monitor, which only shows applications running on that screen

  I would like to have a task bar on each of my monitors, but I only want applications that are currently on that monitor to be displayed on its taskbar. This can be accomplished using UltraMon, however the taskbar shown on the secondary and tertiary monitors is not the native Windows 7 taskbar, but rather made to try to simulate how it looks and feels. As good as it is, it is missing a ton of the features I find best about the taskbar, such as program grouping, "peeking" at applications and so forth. So I am wondering if there is a way to make Windows 7 actually display its native awesome taskbar on multiple monitors.

• Should all my files be stored on my shared partition?

  I am setting up a tripple boot HD and was going to use a 4th partition to share files between OS's. I was wondering if there is any point in having much space on each OS partition to store files or if I just make the shared partition big and put everything on that? Is there any difference in speed between accessing files on the shared partition vs the native files? Are there any other benefits/disadvantages of having files on either the native/shared partition? EDIT: OS's in question are Windows 7, Ubuntu 12.04, and OS X 10.7.4.

  I have a Mac Mini (10.6) with a DVI out to my 720p television. It shows the options for 480p, 720p and 1080i with a little television next to the icons, along with the stand resolutions like 1024x768. The standard resolutions work fine with overscan checked, but I can't get any of the native television resolutions to work. I only get a "no signal" on my television. The input on the television is marked with 1080i/720p/480p and yet only 480p (and the PC native resolutions like 1024x768) work. What's happening?

• Access a windows dynamic hard drive through a virtual machine on ubuntu?

  I have a Windows 7 OS and am thinking about transitioning to a dual boot set up with Ubuntu 12.04. From what I recall, it is not possible to natively access Dynamic Windows Partitions in a Linux OS. My thought is that it might be possible to have a virtual machine (running windows) installed within Ubuntu access the physical dynamic drive. The problem comes to whether VMWare can access the physical disk "high enough" to be able to mount it within the windows virtual machine as a native device or if it gets passed through from the native Linux OS. This is really the only thing holding me back from switching to a dual-boot set up as the dynamic disk is made up of 4 or 5 hard drives and I would very much like access to the data on both OS's. Alternatively, is there another solution for combining multiple physical hard drives into one virtual hard drive that would be readable on both OS's?

  Is there a Windows 7 native way to display the overall compression ratio on a Windows compressed drive? As part of our disaster recovery process, we're copying some key system folders onto 2TB external hard drive, encrypted using TrueCrypt and copied using robocopy. The drive is compressed and I'd like to see what kind of compression ratio we're getting and whether it's actually worth the performance overhead.   I like to know the server (TCP based) architecture to support large scale of clients(at least10K) to implement Fix server. My points are How we design it. How to listen on the open port? Use select or poll or any other function. How to process the response of the client? On large scale we cannot create the one thread for each client. Should the processing of response is in the different executable and share the request and response to the server executable through IPC. There is much more on it. • Does program need additional symbols from .so shared library except those declared in header file?

  In C programming, I thought that a object file can be successfully linked with a .so file as long as the .so file offers all symbols which have been declared in the header file. Suppose I have foo.c, bar.h and two libraries libbar.so.1 and libbar.so.2. The implementation of libbar.so.1 and libbar.so.2 is totally different, but I think it's OK as long as they both offers functions declared in bar.h. I linked foo.o with libbar.so.1 and produced an executable: foo.bin. This executable worked when libbar.so.1 is in LD_LIBRARY_PATH.(of course a symbolic link is made as libbar.so) However, when I change the symbolic link to libbar.so.2, foo.bin could not run and complainted this: undefined symbol: _ZSt4cerr I found this symbol type is 'B' and it does not appear in libbar.so.2. Obviously this symbol has nothing to do with those functions I decared in bar.h. What's wrong here?

• C#: Custom assembly directory

  Say we have an application which consists of one executable and 5 libraries. Regularly all of these will be contained in one directory and the libraries will be loaded from there. Is it possible to do so that I can have for example some of the libraries in one directory called Lib, and the rest in one called Lib2? So that the application directory would only contain the executable itself and the other assemblies would be contained in various logical directories. How can I do this? And I would like to know how to do the loading of the assemblies, but also how to make the building of the application put the assemblies in the right directory.

• netbook intel GMA 3150 external monitor 1920x1080 flicker problem

  Dear all, i recently purchased a acer netbook (apsire one d260). It runs flawlessly. Yesterday I bought a samsung 23" TFT with a native resolution of 1920x1080. According to the information found in the internet and my local computer dealer, the intel chipset can handle the native resolution of the monitor. However, this is only partly the case. I use the VGA cabel to connect, the monitor instantly switches to the native resolution and now the problem: Occasionaly, especially the first 2 hours after booting up, I have a flickering all over the screen, sometimes the entire screen is shaking and spinning around like crazy. I figured out, that lowering the resolution avoids the flicker but this helps only for some time. I can rule out that it's the monitor's problem since I found no issues with another notebook. Right now, I have no problems with the netbook, for about 30 minutes I didn't experience any issues... But I don't know for how long, it occurs without warning :-) I'm worried that if I would bring the netbook back to the dealer and explain my problem, after testing it on an external screen in the local shop, everything works just fine... And I won't get helped with the problem because I can't prove it. (I'm currently in Thailand and over here, customer service is nothing like back home in Germany) What can I do? Is this a driver related issue? (I installed the latest GPU driver) Is it because of the VGA cable? (But why does it work sometimes without any problems and with no issues on the other notebook) I monitored the GPU/CPU temperature, nothing changes really over time..Can it simply be a faulty GPU and is a replacement justifiable? I'm really stressed now because for the time I'm writing, the flickering didn't occur...but for sure, soon or later it will happen again.. I Forgot to mention, the problem also happens if the netbook runs on battery, unplugged. So the only hardware that is plugged is the TFT screen. ...........and here it comes again, flickering has just begun. NEED HELP! • How do I set my main monitor to a higher resolution?

  My laptop monitor's native resolution is 1280x800 and it just isnt big enough for me. I tried to set the resolution higher, but my graphics card only showed options upto 1280x800, and I figured that was the max res my card would allow. I found a monitor out on the street a few days ago and its native resolution is 1024x768. I have been playing around with it a bit. I was looking under the resolutions for it, and I can set it upto 1400x1050, so apparently my card allows for more than 1280x800, so why can't I set my laptop monitor to higher?
