  • Visual Studio 2008 Create Word 2007 Template Project Crashes

    - by Rob
    I've got this weird crashing happening when creating a C# Word 2007 Template Project in Visual Studio 2008. The IDE tells me that it's creating the project (it does create the solution and C# vsproj as well as the dotx and cs files). Then the IDE just crashes - no errors, messages, etc. When I try devenv /SafeMode it still doesn't work. I've also tried devenv /log but I don't really see any smoking guns. I have VS2008 SP1 and VSTO 3.0 SP1 installed. Anybody know why this is occurring or more importantly, how I can get it to stop?

  • Reading Excel files from C#

    - by dbkk
    Is there a free or open source library to read Excel files (.xls) directly from a C# program? It does not need to be too fancy, just to select a worksheet and read the data as strings. So far, I've been using Export to Unicode text function of Excel, and parsing the resulting (tab-delimited) file, but I'd like to eliminate the manual step.

    - by StuffHappens
    Hello. I have a folder with lots of doc-documents and I need to upload their context into database. The problem is that some of them are password protected and I don't know the password. I would like to skip them but I don't know how to detect if password protection presents. If someone helps I'll appriciate it greatly. P.S. Programming language is C#.

    - by hcpremium
    I have an Excel workbook which contains a PivotCache I would like to use as a data source. var file = @"Foo.xls"; var excel = new Excel.Application(); var workbook = excel.Workbooks.Open(file); Excel.PivotCache cache = null; foreach (Excel.PivotCache pivotCache in workbook.PivotCaches()) { if (...) { cache = pivotCache; } } var records = cache.Recordset; The last command throws an exception (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800A03EC). How can I access the PivotCache? I tried it thru Ole DB first, but no success...

  • Using "wildcards" in a vlist array to delete rows in Excel

    - by KMinner
    Good Morning All, I'm trying to setup a vba macro to delete all user IDs out of a spreadsheet that do not start with designated prefixes (e.g. US, A1, VM, etc). The below block of code was found on the Code Library and looks to be what I need but there is one problem: When I enter in UserID prefixes into the vlist fields, it treats them as absolute rather then a part of the string that I want to keep. Is there a way to incorporate wildcards into a vlist? Sub Example1() Dim vList Dim lLastRow As Long, lCounter As Long Dim rngToCheck As Range, rngFound As Range, rngToDelete As Range Application.ScreenUpdating = False With Sheet1 lLastRow = Get_Last_Row(.Cells) If lLastRow > 1 Then vList = Array("US", "A1", "EG", "VM") 'we don't want to delete our header row With .Range("A2:A" & lLastRow) For lCounter = LBound(vList) To UBound(vList) Set rngFound = .Find( _ what:=vList(lCounter), _ lookat:=xlWhole, _ searchorder:=xlByRows, _ searchdirection:=xlNext, _ MatchCase:=True) 'check if we found a value we want to keep If rngFound Is Nothing Then 'there are no cells to keep with this value If rngToDelete Is Nothing Then Set rngToDelete = .Cells Else 'if there are no cells with a different value then 'we will get an error On Error Resume Next If rngToDelete Is Nothing Then Set rngToDelete = .ColumnDifferences(Comparison:=rngFound) Else Set rngToDelete = Intersect(rngToDelete, .ColumnDifferences(Comparison:=rngFound)) End If On Error GoTo 0 End If Next lCounter End With If Not rngToDelete Is Nothing Then rngToDelete.EntireRow.Delete End If End With Application.ScreenUpdating = True End Sub

  • Outlook Interop: Password protected PST file headache

    - by Ed Manet
    Okay, I have no problem identifying the .PST file using the Outlook Interop assemblies in a C# app. But as soon as I hit a password protected file, I am prompted for a password. We are in the process of disabling the use of PSTs in our organization and one of the steps is to unload the PST files from the users' Outlook profile. I need to have this app run silently and not prompt the user. Any ideas? Is there a way to create the Outlook.Application object with no UI and then just try to catch an Exception on password protected files? // create the app and namespace Application olApp = new Application(); NameSpace olMAPI = olApp.GetNamespace("MAPI"); // get the storeID of the default inbox string rootStoreID = olMAPI.GetDefaultFolder(OlDefaultFolders.olFolderInbox).StoreID; // loop thru each of the folders foreach (MAPIFolder fo in olMAPI.Folders) { // compare the first 75 chars of the storeid // to prevent removing the Inbox folder. string s1 = rootStoreID.Substring(1, 75); string s2 = fo.StoreID.Substring(1, 75); if (s1 != s2) { // unload the folder olMAPI.RemoveStore(fo); } } olApp.Quit();

  • Word 2007 macros: is there an OnPrint event I can attach a macro to?

    - by notnot
    I'm looking to do a formatting check on word files before they get sent to the printer and it needs to be completely transparent to the user (no extra controls, just using the standard print options available through the UI). Is there an OnPrint or BeforePrint event, or something that can be used in that respect which I could attach a macro to, the same way I can with Open, Close, or Save? This feels like it should be simple... but those are famous last words. Thanks in advance, Rob

  • Some languages don't work when using Word 2007 Spellcheck from Interop

    - by Tridus
    I'm using the Word 2007 spellchecker via Interop in a VB.net desktop app. When using the default language (English), it works fine. If I set the language to French via LanguageId, it also works. But if I set it to French (Canadian) (Word.WdLanguageID.wdFrenchCanadian), it doesn't work. There's no error message, it simply runs and says the document contains no errors. I know it does, if I paste the exact same text into Word itself and run it with the French (Canadian) dictionary, it finds errors. Just why that dictionary doesn't work is kind of a mystery to me. Full code below: Public Shared Function SpellCheck(ByVal text As String, ByVal checkGrammar As Boolean) As String ' If there is no data to spell check, then exit sub here. If text.Length = 0 Then Return text End If Dim objWord As Word.Application Dim objTempDoc As Word.Document ' Declare an IDataObject to hold the data returned from the ' clipboard. Dim iData As IDataObject objWord = New Word.Application() objTempDoc = objWord.Documents.Add objWord.Visible = False ' Position Word off the screen...this keeps Word invisible ' throughout. objWord.WindowState = 0 objWord.Top = -3000 ' Copy the contents of the textbox to the clipboard Clipboard.SetDataObject(text) ' With the temporary document, perform either a spell check or a ' complete ' grammar check, based on user selection. With objTempDoc .Content.Paste() .Activate() .Content.LanguageID = Word.WdLanguageID.wdFrenchCanadian If checkGrammar Then .CheckGrammar() Else .CheckSpelling() End If ' After user has made changes, use the clipboard to ' transfer the contents back to the text box .Content.Copy() iData = Clipboard.GetDataObject If iData.GetDataPresent(DataFormats.Text) Then text = CType(iData.GetData(DataFormats.Text), _ String) End If .Saved = True .Close() End With objWord.Quit() Return text End Function

  • Excel 2007 - Worksheet is larger than the window

    - by Chris
    Hi This is an odd problem but frustrating none the less. I have a worksheet saved which is larger than the Excel 2007 "workarea". This means when I open the worksheet I cannot access the corners of the worksheet to reduce the size and the worksheets title bar area (with move,size,minimise etc) is hidden beneath the ribbon , even if I remove the ribbon , I still can't see the title bar. In Excel 2003 I've had a similar effect but I've always been able to hit the "alt" key to access the "Move" option. However in Excel 2007 , hitting "alt" brings up some shortcuts for the ribbon etc but I can't access the worksheet options. Has anyone else know how to access the worksheet drop down when this happens?

  • Can someone confirm how Microsoft Excel 2007 internally represents numbers?

    - by Jon
    I know the IEEE 754 floating point standard by heart as I had to learn it for an exam. I know exactly how floating point numbers are used and the problems that they can have. I can manually do any operation on the binary representation of floating point numbers. However, I have not found a single source which unambiguously states that excel uses 64 bit floating point numbers to internally represent every single cell "type" in excel except for text. I have no idea whether some of the types use signed or unsigned integers and some use 64 bit floating point. I have found literally trillions of articles which 1) describe floating point numbers and then 2) talk about being careful with excel because of floating point numbers. I have not found a single statement saying "all types are 64 bit floating point numbers except text". I have not found a single statement which says "changing the type of a cell only changes its visual representation and not its internal representation, unless you change the type from text to some other type which is not text or you change some other type which is not text to text". This is literally all I want to know, and it's so simple and axiomatic that I am amazed that I can find trillions of articles and pages which talk around these statements but do not state them directly.

  • How to find the name of multiple files opened on system by unique id?

    - by Ashwin Upadhyay
    I want to know about the name of all currently opened MS-Word file by its unique id. I found unique id for one file but when I gave its destination path in code. My requirement is that when any user open Word file then the unique id of this file is passed into my code and through this code the name of this file is stored into database (but it is done backgroundly and for multiple files).

  • MS Excel automation without macros in the generated reports. Any thoughts?

    - by ezeki77
    Hello! I know that the web is full of questions like this one, but I still haven't been able to apply the answers I can find to my situation. I realize there is VBA, but I always disliked having the program/macro living inside the Excel file, with the resulting bloat, security warnings, etc. I'm thinking along the lines of a VBScript that works on a set of Excel files while leaving them macro-free. Now, I've been able to "paint the first column blue" for all files in a directory following this approach, but I need to do more complex operations (charts, pivot tables, etc.), which would be much harder (impossible?) with VBScript than with VBA. For this specific example knowing how to remove all macros from all files after processing would be enough, but all suggestions are welcome. Any good references? Any advice on how to best approach external batch processing of Excel files will be appreciated. Thanks! PS: I eagerly tried Mark Hammond's great PyWin32 package, but the lack of documentation and interpreter feedback discouraged me.

  • PowerPoint PlugIn does not read defaults from .dll.config file

    - by Nick T
    I'm working on a very simple PowerPoint plugin, and I'm quite a bit stumped. In my settings.settings file, I have configured a setting "StartPath", which references where the PowerPoint plugin will navigate to using a Browser component. After I compile the application, and run the installer generated by the Setup project, the application is installed and uses the default value in the settings file. However, if I edit the application.dll.config file, the plugin still uses the old values. How can I set things up such that the plugin references the .dll.config file and not its default settings? The code to access the settings is listed below, including the other variants I have tried: //Attempt 1 string location = MyApplication.Properties.Settings.Default.StartPath; //Attempt 2 string location = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["StartPath"]; //Attempt 3: Configuration element is inaccessible due to its protection level string applicationName = Environment.GetCommandLineArgs()[0] + ".exe"; string exePath = System.IO.Path.Combine(Environment.CurrentDirectory, applicationName); Configuration config = ConfigurationManager.OpenExeConfiguration(exePath); string location = config.AppSettings["StartPath"];

  • Excel 2008 Cant Parse HTML

    - by VictorV
    I need to export a gridview to excel, I put the return html code from the gridview to a HtmlTextWriter and put this into the response. The result file work fine in excel, excel can parse the html and the result is readable, work perfect on excel 2003 and 2007, but in some machines with Excel 2008 (MACOS) excel shows only the raw html code and can't process this html code. Any idea to configure excel? This is the code to convert: public static void ToExcel(GridView gridView, string fileName) { HttpResponse response = HttpContext.Current.Response; response.Clear(); response.Buffer = true; fileName = fileName.Replace(".xls", string.Empty) + ".xls"; response.AddHeader("content-disposition", "attachment;filename=" + fileName); response.Charset = ""; response.ContentEncoding = Encoding.Unicode; response.BinaryWrite(Encoding.Unicode.GetPreamble()); response.ContentType = MimeTypes.GetContentType(fileName); StringWriter sw = new StringWriter(); HtmlTextWriter hw = new HtmlTextWriter(sw); gridView.AllowPaging = false; //gridView.DataBind(); //Change the Header Row back to white color gridView.HeaderRow.Style.Add("background-color", "#FFFFFF"); //Apply style to Individual Cells for (int i = 0; i < gridView.HeaderRow.Cells.Count; i++) { gridView.HeaderRow.Cells[i].Style.Add("background-color", "yellow"); } for (int i = 0; i < gridView.Rows.Count; i++) { GridViewRow row = gridView.Rows[i]; //Change Color back to white row.BackColor = System.Drawing.Color.White; //Apply text style to each Row row.Attributes.Add("class", "textmode"); //Apply style to Individual Cells of Alternating Row if (i % 2 != 0) { for (int j = 0; j < row.Cells.Count; j++) { row.Cells[j].Style.Add("background-color", "#C2D69B"); } } } gridView.RenderControl(hw); //style to format numbers to string string style = @"<style> .textmode { mso-number-format:\@; } </style>"; response.Write(style); response.Output.Write(sw.ToString()); response.Flush(); response.End(); }

  • Any application to bind documents of different kind

    - by Codeslayer
    A situation that may be quite common in offices is: We communicate with clients over e-mails, exchange documents and spreadsheets with them. Is there any tool which will help me in binding all these outputs. Maybe I may get flamed on this as this is not exactly a programming question. But some inputs may certainly help me. Thanx

  • How do I use the Microsoft VSTO interfaces?

    - by user557554
    hi, I would like to create an addin for microsoft outlook, and am using the visual studio tools to do so. However I am really struggling to get my head around the use of interfaces within the VSTO environment - the resources on MSDN show many useful looking interfaces, but I am unsure how to use these interfaces to access data. For example I am trying to add a new folder into an IMAP account but am finding it very difficult to work out how to get outlook to do so. Can anyone recommend any good resources for learning how to use VSTO (I have VSTO for dummies, but it doesn't cover the level of detail I need, I have been using MSDN, but I have found it doesnt offer much information on how to use the interfaces etc.) thanks.

  • Creating a border around cells with the same value.

    - by Liam
    I have a table like the one below. How can I get Excel to put borders around groups with the same number in the 4th column so that there is a border around the groups. I was thinking conditional formatting could do it but I can't think how. So I think the only option is a macro. • How to have an excel addin read rows from a worksheet until no more data?

    - by user169867
    I've started writing a Com addin for Excel 2003 using C#. I'm looking for a code example showing how to read in cell data from the active worksheet. I've seen that you can write code like this: Excel.Range firstCell = ws.get_Range("A1", Type.Missing); Excel.Range lastCell = ws.get_Range("A10", Type.Missing); Excel.Range worksheetCells = ws.get_Range(firstCell, lastCell); to grab a range of cells. What I could use help with is how to read the cell data when you don't know how many rows of data there are. I may be able to determine the starting row that the data will be begin at, but there will be an unkown number of rows of data to read. Could someone provide me w/ an example of how to read rows from the worksheet until you come across a row of empty cells? Also does anyone know how to grab the range of cells the user has selected? Any help would be greatly appreciated. This seems like a powerful dev tool, but I'm having trouble finding detailed documentation to help me learn it :)

  • How to improve performance of opening Microsoft Word when automated from c#?

    - by Abdullah BaMusa
    I have Microsoft Word template that I automated filling it’s fields from my application, and when the user request print I open this template. but creating word application every time user request print after filling fields is very expensive and lead to some delay while opening the template, so I choose to cache the reference to Word then just open the new filled template. that solve the performance issue as opening file is less expensive than recreating Word each time, but this work while the user just close the document not the entire Word application which when happened my reference to Word become invalid and return with exception says: “The RPC server is unavailable” next time request opening template . I tried to subscribe to BeforClosing event but his trigger for Quitting Word as well as Closing documents. My question is how to know if the word is closing document or quit the entire application so I take the proper action, or any hint for another direction of thinking about improve performance of opening word template.

  • Templating Word Documents in C#

    - by NullGeo
    I was wondering if there is a library out there such that it could give me the ability to fill in word templates with custom values. For example: Following could be the content of the Word Document {Address} {PhoneNumber} Hello {Name}, How are you doing? In C# I would like to do something like this to replace all the placeholders in the Word document: using(WordDocument doc = WordDocument.Load("Mail.docx")){ var person = new {Name = "John Smith", Address="42 Wallaby Way, Sydney", PhoneNumber="555-555-5555"}; doc.Template(person); doc.Print(); } The resulting document would look like this: 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney 555-555-5555 Hello John Smith, How are you doing? Any libraries out there (preferably free) that let's me do this? Edit: I am not asking you to find anything that let's me do this. If that was the case, I would do a Google search by myself. Honestly, all I am asking is "has anybody used a library in the past to do this exact thing."
