  • Supplementary Developer Laptop

    I'm looking to buy a laptop with the following specs for a developer. The goal will be to have a development machine supplementing the devs desktop. During work hours the dev will be on a beefy desktop. For working while on the go: trains, client sites, code camps, it would be nice to have a machine which can run Visual Studio 2008 without needing to remote desktop into their primary machine. What do you think is the lowest cost laptop meeting this need? Here are the specs I have in mind: SSD drive 64GB-doesn't need to be huge, most data is stored on servers. Will need to fit Windows 7, IIS, SQL Server, and Visual Studio 2010. RAM-3GB processor =Pentium Core 2 duo Screen size = 14 inches. OS doesn't matter. It will be paved with Windows 7 Ultimate optical drive omitted would be a plus. weight and battery life aren't so important because the machine will be plugged in almost all the time.

  • Cascading dropdownlist jQuery does not retain value on post back.

    I have two html select server control on an add data form page. the user selects a value in the first html select server control and then values are populated into the second html select server control with jquery. The problem is when a a user clicks the save button and the page posts back, the values are no longer in the drop down list populated by jQuery. The drop downlist is a html server control, shouldn't it retain the values on post-back?   • Problem with openssl_get_privatekey returning false

    I am trying to generate a signed url for Amazon's CloudFront service but am running into problems in that the openssl_get_privatekey function appears to be returning false and I can't quite figure out why. Here is the code (PHP) that I am using: $priv_key = file_get_contents(path_to_my_pem_file); $priv_keyid = openssl_get_privatekey($privkey); Unfortunately, everytime I try this openssl_get_privatekey fails silently and I run into errors when I try to sign with openssl_sign later on. I've tried printing out the contents of $priv_key after it has been read in and it appears to be correct. I'm running this on RHEL 5.4 using PHP 5.2.13. I've confirmed that file pem file is readable and I've also run dos2unix on it just in case (didn't work before or after). Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated as I am relatively new to both PHP and openssl.

    I was looking at the canonical bad fibonacci algorithm the other day: public static int fib(int n) { // Base Case if (n < 2) return 1; else return fib(n-1) + fib(n-2); } I made the interesting observation. When you call fib(n), then for k between 1 and n fib(k) is called precisely fib(n-k+1) times (or fib(n-k) depending on your definition of fib(0) ). Also, fib(0) is called fib(n-k-1) times. This then allows me to find that in fib(100) there are exactly 708449696358523830149 calls to the fib function. Are there other interesting observations on this function you know of?

  • Replacement relevance sorting for MySQL fulltext in InnoDB tables?

    I am using MySQL InnoDB and want to do fulltext style searches on certain columns. What is the best way of sorting the results in order of relevance? I am trying to do something like: SELECT columns, (LENGTH(column_name) - LENGTH(REPLACE(column_name, '%searchterm%', ''))) AS score FROM table WHERE column_name LIKE '%searchterm%' ORDER BY score However this will become quite complicated once I start searching more than 1 column or using more than one keyword. I already have several joins happening so have simplified the query above. Can anyone suggest a better way? I don't want to use any 3rd party software like Sphinx etc

Edit: Please bear in mind the facts/requirements I mentioned above. The application will run on corporate machines which are very slow and without really good graphical acceleration. The crucial is to have really quick response and start time.

  • One to many too much data returned - MySQL

    I have 2 related MySQL tables in a one to many relationship. Customers: cust_id, cust_name, cust_notes Orders: order_id, cust_id, order_comments So, if I do a standard join to get all customers and their orders via PHP, I return something like: Jack Black, jack's notes, comments about jack's 1st order Jack Black, jack's notes, comments about jack's 2nd order Simon Smith, simon's notes, comments about simon's 1st order Simon Smith, simon's notes, comments about simon's 2nd order The problem is that *cust_notes* is a text field and can be quite large (a couple of thousand words). So, it seems like returning that field for every order is inneficient. I could use *GROUP_CONCAT* and JOINS to return all *order_comments* on a single row BUT order_comments is a large text field too, so it seems like that could create a problem. Should I just use two separate queries, one for the customers table and one for the orders table? Is there a better way?

    Let's say I have a table with usernames: Id | Name ----------- 1 | Bobby 20 | Bob 90 | Bob 100 | Joe-Bob 630 | Bobberino 820 | Bob Junior I want to return a list of n matches on name for 'Bob' where the resulting set first contains exact matches followed by similar matches. I thought something like this might work SELECT TOP 4 a.* FROM ( SELECT * from Usernames WHERE Name = 'Bob' UNION SELECT * from Usernames WHERE Name LIKE '%Bob%' ) AS a but there are two problems: It's an inefficient query since the sub-select could return many rows (looking at the execution plan shows a join happening before top) (Almost) more importantly, the exact match(es) will not appear first in the results since the resulting set appears to be ordered by primary key. I am looking for a query that will return (for TOP 4) Id | Name --------- 20 | Bob 90 | Bob (and then 2 results from the LIKE query, e.g. 1 Bobby and 100 Joe-Bob) Is this possible in a single query?

  • Wandering CGAffineTransformMakeRotation

    Okay this is about to make me insane -- any help would be appreciated. I have two images which are part of a timer application. One is the needle/hand and the other is a little hub which is styled to look like the needle base. I'm using a CGAffineTransformMakeRotation to rotate the needle and the base stays stationary. The problem: there is like a 1-2px 'wander' to the needle's rotation which makes it look like it's moving off center in relation to the base. I have worked the base and needle image over in PS extensively, and both are dead center pixel wise -- seriously.     I have a table (say "Demographics") on SQL Server. In this table are the following columns "LastName", "FirstName", "MiddleName", "Prefix" , "Suffix". I have one textbox to search for them on a webpage. My question: Whats a good design strategy for queries where the user could be searching for various combinations of names including last names that have spaces e.g. "Smith James Jr." . Our customers store Jr. sometimes in suffix and sometimes just tack it to lastname. Sometimes Smith James Jr could be the entire last name.

  • ActiveReports Conditional Formatting - Picture Visibility

    In ActiveReports, how can I change formatting based on values in the report data? Specifically, I want to show or hide pictures based on a value in the data. The report gets bound to a list of objects via a set to its DataSource property. These objects have a Condition property with values "Poor", "Normal", etc. I have some pictures in the report that correspond to the different conditions, and I want to hide all the pictures except for the one corresponding to the value. Should I subscribe to the Format event for the detail section? If so, how do I get to the "current record" data?

  • Building a Drupal Newsletter Module for handling Newsletter Articles

    We're building a module for generating HTML for email newsletters. We've looked into using a few other modules (SimpleNews, MailChimp, among others), but due to various requirements, it'll be easier and better for us to build a custom solution. Being a new Drupal developer, I'm a bit worried about handling this in a "non-Drupal" way. That being said, my plan is to setup a vocabulary with Newsletters as a term and the actual Newsletters as sub-terms, like so: Newsletters (term) - Newsletter A (sub-term) - Newsletter B (sub-term) This has the added benefit of being able to organize where articles were published (besides just on the site.) The question, though, is how to handle the different Newsletter issues. I could go another level deeper in the vocabulary, like so: Newsletters (term) - Newsletter A (sub-term) - Issue - 2010-03-01 - Issue - 2010-03-02 - Newsletter B (sub-term) - Issue - 2010-03-01 - Issue - 2010-03-08 But I'm wondering if this is adding a bit too much complexity. Once I have this taxonomy setup, when the user went to add new newsletters it would also create a node (content type: newsletter), and when he/she went to add new issues, it would also create a node (content type: issue.) Those would then be the landing pages for that content. So, the question is is there a better way for handling this structure? Is this a Drupal-like solution?

I am using SQL Server 2012′s CHOOSE function. It is SELECT GETDATE() Today, DATENAME(dw, GETDATE()) DayofWeek, CHOOSE(DATEPART(dw, GETDATE()), 'WEEKEND','Weekday', 'Weekday','Weekday','Weekday','Weekday','WEEKEND') WorkDay GO You can use the choose function on table as well.   • Powershell STA watin

    Wow, two posts on the same day. I was working on a quick DLL project to do some web scripting using the awsome power of Watin.  In the past I use to create a vbscript as the test handler to call the DLL but lately I got a Powershell bug to call .NET DLLs. When I tried to debug the Watin call I received: The CurrentThread needs to have it's ApartmentState set to ApartmentState.STA to be able to automate Internet Explorer. I couldn't find a quick google answer to powershell apartmentstate .  Apparently you can set the powershell apartment state by the command line -STA.  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd315276.aspx I've found that the powershell documentation and examples is lacking compared to the Microsoft support I've come to expect.  Why is the Powershell v2.0 in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\windowspowershell\v1.0 ?

  • How to return model state from child action handler in ASP.NET MVC

    In my blog engine, I have one controller action that displays blog content, and in that view, I call Html.RenderAction(...) to render the "CreateComment" form. When a user posts a comment, the post is handled by the comment controller (not the blog controller). If the comment data is valid, I simply return a Redirect back to the blog page's URL. If the comment data is invalid (e.g. comment body is empty), I want to return the ViewData with the error information back to the blog controller and through the blog view to the CreateComment action/view so I can display which fields are bad. I have this working fine via AJAX when Javascript is enabled, but now I'm working on the case where Javascript might be disabled. If I return a RedirecToAction or Redirect from the comment controller, the model state information is lost. Any ideas?

  • Entity Framework 4 relationship management in POCO Templates - More lazy than FixupCollection?

    I've been taking a look at EF4 POCO templates in beta 2. The FixupCollection looks fine for maintaining the model correctness after updating the relationship collection property (i.e. product.Orders it would set the order.Product reference ). But what about support for handling the scenario when some of those Order objects are removed from the context? The use-case of maintaining cascading deletes in the in-memory model. The old Typed DataSet model used to do this by performing the query through the container to derive the relationship results. Like the DataSet, this would require a reference to the ObjectContext inside the entity class so that it could query the top-level Order collection. Better support for Separation of Concerns in the ObjectContext would be required. It looks like EF is not suited to this use-case that DataSets did out of the box.... am I right?

  • OnExit is not entering via PostSharp in asp.net project.

    Hi there, I have setup PostSharp and it appears to be working but i don't get it entering OnExit (i have logged setup to ensure it is working) ... Its a bit tricky to configure with asp.net - or is it just me ... I am using the 1.5 new version I basically have the following in my web.config and i had to add the SearchPath otherwise it can't find my assemblies <postsharp directory="C:\Program Files\PostSharp 1.5" trace="true"> <parameters> <!--<add name="parameter-name" value="parameter-value"/>--> </parameters> <searchPath> <!-- Always add the binary folder to the search path. --> <add name="bin" value="~\bin"/> </searchPath> </postsharp> I have set tracing on but what is strange to me is that it appears to build to the temp directory, maybe this is my issue, i am unsure .. hence i do F5 ... Is it possible to name the Output directory and output file?? As you can see it is editing a DLL in the temp dir so IIS is no longer in control so it doesn't execute it ???   • CSS: Aligning problem with rounded corners in IE 6/7 but ok in IE8/ Firefox etc

    Hi there, can anyone help? I have a problem aligning rounded corners in IE6/7. Basically everything seems to work in Firefox / IE8 but in IE6/7 the left / center / and right divs get misaligned. This basically shows exactly what i am refering to. here is the example in IE8 and everything works ok http://es.drop.io/ern0fye/asset/ie8-jpg And here is the problem (this example is running in IE8 with compat mode set to IE7) http://es.drop.io/ern0fye/asset/ie7-jpg I seem to remember there being a bug in IE6/7 with lineheight or similar but i don't recall exactly. I will paste the CSS and HTML below it is very very simple. Basically there is a left div that holds the left corner image and center div which has a background of RED which is the same as the corner images and finally a right div which holds the right corner image. I would appreciate any input anyone has. Thanks in advance.
