The significance of lighting the lamp is the triumph of good over evil. I work every single day in a year but today I am spending my time with family and little one. I make sure that my daughter is aware of our culture and she learns to celebrate the festival with the same passion and values which I have. Worldwide Web Camps

Over the next few weeks Microsoft is sponsoring a number of free Web Camp events around the world. These provide a great way to learn about ASP.NET 4, ASP.NET MVC 2, and Visual Studio 2010. The Web Camps are two day events. The camps aren’t conferences where you sit quietly for hours and people talk at you – they are intended to be interactive. The first day is focused on learning through presentations that are heavy on coding demos. The second day is focused on you building real applications using what you’ve learned. The second day includes hands-on labs, and you’ll join small development teams with other attendees and work on a project together. We’ve got some great speakers lined up for the events – including Scott Hanselman, James Senior, Jon Galloway, Rachel Appel, Dan Wahlin, Christian Wenz and more. Remembering September 11 - 11 Years Later

It's September 11 again and time to reminisce about that fateful day when the world came together as one. The attacks of that day touched everyone around the world as almost 3000 people from the United States and 38 other countries were killed. This year, I am finding it difficult to say anything other than what I have said in previous years. So, I will not try to "wax loquacious." Instead, I will simply say that I will never forgot. I will not forget where I was on that day. I will not forgot the people who died. I will not forget the people who gave their lives so that others might live. And I will not forget how our world changed on that day. And with that remembrance, we again return to our lives, using tragedy to drive us to build a world of peace and opportunity. My thanks go out again to the men and women, uniformed or not, who continue to protect us from harm. May we never again experience such human tragedy, on U.S. soil or elsewhere.

What You Said: How You Track Your Time

Earlier this week we asked you to share your favorite time tracking tips, tricks, and tools. Now we’re back to highlight the techniques HTG readers use to keep tabs on their time. While more than one of you expressed confusion over the idea of tracking how you spend all your time, many of you were more than happy to share the reasons for and the methods you use to stay on top of your time expenditures. Scott uses a fluid and flexible project management tool: I use kanbanflow.com, with two boards to manage task prioritisation and backlog. One board called ‘Current Work’ has three columns ‘Do Today’, ‘In Progress’ and ‘Done’. The other is called ‘Backlog’, which splits tasks into priority groups – ‘Distractions (NU+NI)’, ‘Goals (NU+I)’, ‘Interruptions (U+NI)’, ‘Interruptions (U+NI)’ and ‘Critical (U+I)’, where U is Urgent and I is Important (and N is Not). At the end of each day, I move things from my Backlog to my ‘Current Work’ board, with the idea to keep complete Goals before they become Critical. That way I can focus on ‘Current Work’ Do Today so I don’t feel overwhelmed and can plan my day. As priorities change or interruptions pop up, it’s just a matter of moving tasks between boards. I have both tabs open in my browser all day – this is probably good for knowledge workers strapped to their desk, not so good for those in meetings all day. In that case, go with the calendar on your phone. While the above description might make it sound really technical, we took the cloud-based app for a spin and found the interface to be very flexible and easy to use. Algorithm to figure out appointment times?

I have a weird situation where a client would like a script that automatically sets up thousands of appointments over several days. The tricky part is the appointments are for a variety of US time zones, and I need to take the consumer's local time zone into account when generating appointment dates and times for each record. Appointment Rules: Appointments should be set from 8AM to 8PM Eastern Standard Time, with breaks from 12P-2P and 4P-6P. This leaves a total of 8 hours per day available for setting appointments. Appointments should be scheduled 5 minutes apart. 8 hours of 5-minute intervals means 96 appointments per day. There will be 5 users at a time handling appointments. 96 appointments per day multiplied by 5 users equals 480, so the maximum number of appointments that can be set per day is 480. Now the tricky requirement: Appointments are restricted to 8am to 8pm in the consumer's local time zone. This means that the earliest time allowed for each appointment is different depending on the consumer's time zone: Eastern: 8A Central: 9A Mountain: 10A Pacific: 11A Alaska: 12P Hawaii or Undefined: 2P Arizona: 10A or 11A based on current Daylight Savings Time Assuming a data set can be several thousand records, and each record will contain a timezone value, is there an algorithm I could use to determine a Date and Time for every record that matches the rules above?

What should happen at the start of a software project startup?

A quick introduction My college semesters include a 8 week project working for an actual company with a software need in order to get some much needed practical experience. I have just started such a project with 5 other students. We're required to spend roughly 40 hours a week per student on this project. We're working with SCRUM as the software development method, this was assigned by our teachers. The question Day one of the project just ended which has created some questions for me as to how to start a project in the 'real world'. Our first day included working on a project planning document (not sure what the English term is), creating a appointment with the company for an introduction and the opportunity to start specifying the requirements and setting up some standards for the behavior within the group. However these items didn't take that long to finish. We've made some concrete plans for tomorrow and the day after we'll meet the company. This still leaves several hours of 'work-time' unspent. Is it usual not being able to fill every hour of a day for work at the start of a project or are we simply too inexperienced to see what work needs to be done at this stage of a project, or are we, perhaps, going through the above list too fast? How does this work in the 'real world'? Do you spend your time wondering 'what should I do now', or do you have a clear view of what you're supposed to do at that moment?

How to prevent computer from automatically sleeping and/or hibernating?

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04, and my laptop* won't wake from sleep/suspend/hibernate. (Is sleep the same thing as suspend?) I'm not even sure which of these things it's doing. When I am done working for the day, I lock my screen (Control-Alt-L). When I come back the next day, the screen is in power saving mode, and no amount of typing or clicking (on the usb keyboard/mouse or the builtin keyboard/trackpad) nor tapping the power button will bring it back to life. The only way I can get my machine to work is to hold down the power button until it shuts off, then press the power button again to turn it back on. Obviously, anything I had open from the previous day is pretty much gone -- in particular, my VMs all get rudely shut down without any warning. This is driving me INSANE. I spend the first hour of every work day trying to figure out how to get my computer to stop locking up over night. What I've tried: Editing the org.freedesktop.upower.policy to disable suspend and hibernate. Setting power management options in "Power" section of "System Settings". Looking at all power management options in the BIOS (none appear to be relevant to sleep/suspend/hibernate). Reading every forum post/askubuntu post that I can find that's even tangentially related to the subject. My question: how to disable the automatic sleep and/or hibernate (and/or anything similar) in Ubuntu 12.04. I don't care if it's still possible to sleep/suspend/hibernate/whatever by pushing buttons or running some command or reciting led zeppelin lyrics backwards. I just want my laptop to be ready for work in the morning. *The laptop is a Dell Latitude something or other. I don't want to get too specific because I've seen a lot of similar questions get closed for being too specific. I think my question is generic enough to stand -- it's a question about the latest, stable version of Ubuntu.

Hi there, For my site I have a number of Orders each of which contains a number of Quotes. A quote is always tied to an individual order, so in the quotes controller I add a quote with reference to it's order: function add($orderId) { // funtion here } And the calling URL looks a bit like http://www.example.com/quotes/add/1 It occurred to me the URLs would make more sense if they looked a bit more like http://www.example.com/orders/1/quotes/add As the quote is being added to order 1. Is this something it's possible to achive in CakePHP? Cheers, Tom

Visual Studio does not flag unterminated string constant in VB.Net

I noticed that if I leave off the terminating double quote for a string constant in Visual Studio 2010, there is no error or even a warning, i.e. Dim foo as String = "hi However, the continuous integration tool we are using flags an error: error BC30648: String constants must end with a double quote. What's going on here? Is there some language rule in VB.NET that makes a terminating double quote optional "sometimes"? Is there some setting in Visual Studio that will make it flag this as an error?

checking last char of string in c

If I have two types of strings as: const char *str1 = "This is a string with \"quotes escaped at the end\""; const char *str2 = "This is a \"string\" without quotes at the end"; testFn(str1); testFn(str2); int testFn(char *str) { // test & return 1 if ends on no quote // test & return 0 if ends on quote return; } I would like to test if the string ends with a quote " or not What would be a good way of testing this? Thanks

Tinymce extended_valid_elements for BBcodes?

I use Tinymce with BBcodes plugin so the tags used in the editor are [B] [U] [I] [quote] [color]. If you are familiar with TinyMce there is a great option to filter all unwanted tags when pasting to the editor. Unfortunately i think this is not working for BBcodes mode, what i want is to remove any <TAGS> Or Other Unwanted BBcodes such as [url] & [img] So, my white list is : [B] [U] [I] [quote] [color=XXXXXX]. I'm already filtering in the server side, but i want this to be implemented in the client side too, So by example if someone copied from a webpage a mix of images and urls and formatted text, every image will be stripped and every url will be "unclickable" directly after pasting. Note: this is one of my failed attempts : extended_valid_elements : 'b,i,u,quote,color' Thanks

Plugin Framework - can there be too many addin assemblies?

Hi, The product I'm working on needs to be built in such a way that we have a quote engine driven by a pluggable framework. We are currently thinking of using MAF, so we can leverage separation of the host and addin interfaces for versioning. However, I'm concerned that we'd have lots of assemblies, it's likely that we'd have one for each quote engine addin - of which there could be 100 going forward, we also need to support multiple versions, so there could be lots of assemblies in total. The quote engine also uses WF to drive it, which means each AppDomain for each addin will need a workflow runtime associated with it. This seems quite heavyweight, however we can unload unfrequently used addins. Does this seem like a good design? We've also looked at a single AppDomain solution using an IOC container to load addin types, but I'm concerned that we won't be able to unload any of the assemblies, given their quantity.

Best Tomcat6 JNDI + Hibernate configuration for session/transaction support

I use tomcat6 as a servlet container, and need to integrate Hibernate 3.2 into the project. I found a document how to configure SessionFactory lookup through JNDI, though it does not work as expected. Quote: Hibernate works in any environment that uses JTA, in fact, we recommend to use JTA whenever possible as it is the standard Java transaction interface. End of quote. In hibernate config I indicate current_session_context_class = jta and now I get an error "No TransactionManagerLookup specified". The problem is that Tomcat does not support JTA, and to get it worked, if I understand it correctly, you need to add JOTM or other library to Tomcat. But according to quote it is recommended to use JTA. What can you recommend in this situation?

How to handle null {id} on route?

What if a user hits my site with http://www.mysite.com/Quote/Edit rather than http://www.mysite.com/Quote/Edit/1000 In other words, they do not specify a value for {id}. If they do not, I want to display a nice "Not Found" page, since they did not give an ID. I currentl handle this by accepting a nullable int as the parameter in the Controller Action and it works fine. However, I'm curious if there a more standard MVC framework way of handling this, rather than the code I presently use (see below). Is a smoother way to handle this, or is this pretty mush the right way to do it?
