• Find the source of malware?

  I have a server that was running an older version of lighttpd (1.4.19 on a freebsd 6.2-RELEASE (yea, old) machine) and google alerted me that it had found malware embedded on one of my server's pages. It just so happened to be our index page. I promptly removed the malware and started looking at server logs for how it got there. With no trace in any of the logs of the files being edited, I noticed that the index page's owner had been changed to www, which is the lighttpd user. I then concluded that some sort of veunerability must have existed for that software version and promptly upgraded to 1.4.26. Now the malware is back. I have started some pretty verbose server logging with ftp, lighttpd, and all login attempts to try and see how this script is getting in. Are their any suggestions as to other approaches to take?

  Hi, I'm trying to virtualize an application for Windows 7 but am running into trouble: Application will run fine in Windows 7 if installed in the base. When it is virtualized, it will run on XP, but not on Windows 7. I have tried this in three ways: Captured on XP with ThinApp 4.0 Captured on XP with ThinApp 4.5 Captured on Windows 7 with ThinApp 4.5 Even when captured on Windows 7, it will not run on Windows 7 but will run on XP. When captured with a rival product, Altiris SVS, the virtualized app runs fine on Windows 7. Any idea's what could cause this behaviour? Looking at the trace file, you see that they are different right from the start when comparing Windows 7 and XP tracefiles. What could cause it to go in completely different directions? (And why does the tracefile on Windows 7 say: Operating System Unknown? Does everybody have that on Windows 7 even with 4.5?) The error message is: "Object variable or with block variable not set". • Cannot install Office 2003 Professional on a machine which formerly had 2003 Basic

  Hi to all, I have a problem with one of our PCs. I've inherited this PC and it's always had MS Office basic on it; the time has come to install our Access application on it, so I'm trying to install Office Professional 2003, the problem I have is the installer says the license key is invalid; I can only assume this is down to the fact that the PC used to have Office Basic installed. I've deleted the registration keys for the OFFICE11 section of the registry, but am still getting the problem... Any suggestions as to how to kill any trace of the old install would be appreciated - its' no longer showing up in the add/remove programs window.

• iMac OSX Lion upgrade - Photo Booth stopped working

  After I upgraded my [2009] iMac to OSX Lion (a few days ago), the Photo Booth program stopped working. • customErrors="RemoteOnly" not working properly in Server 2008

  It would appear that on my brand new Windows Server 2008 with IIS7, customErrors is not working. We have customErrors set to RemoteOnly in the web.config on our Asp.Net sites and applications. However, no matter what we do, it would appear that our sites act like it's set to On and we can't get any detailed messages showing up on our applications when remoted into our servers. I'm not entirely sure how to trace where this is being overrided, or if there is something in the way the server is configured that would make the server think the request is internal? How does this actually resolve correctly, anyway? Any help is appreciated... Our network admin has added domains to our hosts file to direct applications to the IP address.

• Baidu spider is hammering my server and bloating my error_log file

  I am getting the following errors in my /etc/httpd/logs/error_log file [Sun Oct 20 00:04:15 2013] [error] [client 180.76.5.16] File does not exist: /usr/local/apache/htdocs/homes [Sun Oct 20 00:08:31 2013] [error] [client 180.76.5.113] File does not exist: /usr/local/apache/htdocs/homes [Sun Oct 20 00:12:47 2013] [error] [client 180.76.5.88] File does not exist: /usr/local/apache/htdocs/homes [Sun Oct 20 00:17:07 2013] [error] [client 180.76.5.138] File does not exist: /usr/local/apache/htdocs/homes These kinds of errors are so often, that my error log files are over 500MB! I have done an IP trace on the client address to find that it belongs to something called baidu. Beijing Baidu Netcom Science and Technology Co in China. Is there a way that I can just get apache to deny any incoming requests from some crummy spider that is repeatedly hitting my site??? Is there a better way of dealing with the problem? I am happy to completely block out China if it means that I can actually track real errors.

• XML Schema For MBSA Reports

  I'm in the process of creating a script to run the command line version of Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (mbsacli.exe) against all of our servers. Since the MBSA reports are provided as XML documents, I should be able to write a script or small program to parse the XML looking for errors / issues. I'm wondering if anyone knows whether or not the XML schema for the MBSA reports is documented anywhere -- I have goggled this, and cant seem to find any trace of it. I've run across a few articles that address bits and pieces, but nothing that addresses the complete schema. Yes, I could just reverse engineer the XML, but I would like to understand a little more about the meaning of some of the tags. Thanks...

I was wondering for the first error, what does "enable away mode" mean? for the second, what utilization percentage of CPU is reasonable? for the third, what is "PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM)"? • Ubuntu - why would /var/log/dmesg stop updating after boot? does not show panic/cpu_hung errors which the console shows

  So I have an Ubuntu 10.04 install VM on a host. Latest 2.6.38-15-server kernel . /var/log/dmesg displays only the bootup but will stop recording after that. It will not show the trace/cpu_hung errors I am trying to troubleshoot. /var/log/dmesg.0 , dmesg.1 nothing - I did a string search for the text that displays on the console during the crash and NOTHING gets logged anywhere in /var/log/* . I have to call into the provider and ask them to take a screenshot of the console since nothing shows in dmesg. Why would /var/log/dmesg not record kernel panics, or such?

And will this solve our problems with the exceptions in our event log?

• Using Komodo IDE as Text editor from the OS X terminal

  I'm running a Centos 6.4 server with cPanel. WHM (admin side panel) shows about 100GB of bandwidth this month. However, the server's RTG shows 3.4TB last 30 days, 121GB past 24 hours alone. Doesn't make sense. I'm trying to trace the cause of this. It's a shared web hosting server for approximately 300 domains. I would appreciate help tracing this down somehow. • failover cluster file replication

  I have a Windows 2008 R2 failover cluster server. I am going to move one of our window services onto this new server. The service writes some trace information to a log file on the local harddrive. This will become a problem when it is moved to cluster server when cluster A become unavailable and cluster B takes over and now there are 2 places where I need to look for log files. Is there a way to make sure regardless of which cluster is on, I get one complete log file? I have been researching this and there is something called DFS replication but i was wondering if there is something better that works with failover cluster... I prefer not having to update my code. I can specify it to write log files to a different location by changing app.config file but no code change...

• IIS 8 Random 503 service unavailable

  We migrated a busy website to Windows Server 2012 with IIS 8. The website randomly gives the error "503 service unavailable" after an user presses F5 the error is gone again. The website is build in ASP.NET MVC 3. The website runs on one application pool, with default settings There are around 500 to 900 concurrent users on the website during the day, and the error happens more often when there are more 650 users. The CPU and the memory use on the server is stable. There is nothing about the 503 errors in the application log, the IIS log and the event log. Does anyone has any clue what the problem can be or how we can trace the the problem?

  I'm getting some conflicting advice on how to best configure our SQL storage with our current SAN. I would like to do some of my own performance testing with a few different configurations. I looked at using SQLIOSim but it doesn't seem to simulate TempDB. Can anyone recommend a way to test data, log and TempDB performance?   My IIS apppool user is trying to create a folder but fails. How do I find out which User it is? Let's say I don't know much about IIS7 but need to trace whatever is happening through tools. Place of crime is WinSrv2008 with IIS7. So I fire up Sysinternals/ProcessMonitor to find out what is happening. I find Access denied on a folder just as I suspected. But which user? I add the User column to the output and it says IIS Apppool\Defaultapppool in capitals. Well... that isn't a user is it? If I go to IIS and its Apppools and Advanced settings and Process model and Identity I can see clues about which user it is but that is only because I know IIS. What if it had been Apache or LightHttpd or whatever? How do I see the user to give the appropriate rights to?

• HowTo access Samba Share over VPN Tunnel?

  I don't know how to access a Samba share running on a Ubuntu 10.04 server through OpenVPN 2.1.0. I've installed & configured OpenVPN and everything works. The server end of the tunnel has the IP of 10.8.0.1. When I connect from XP (over our local network) I'm given the IP of 10.8.0.6. I can ping and trace route from both ends of the tunnel. Now, I'm lost...how to access the Samba share from XP and from OS X?

• Securely wiping a file on a tmpfs

  I have a script that decrypts some data to a tmpfs, the directory is secure (permissions), the machine's swap is encrypted (random key on boot) and when the script is done it does a 35 pass wipe (Peter Gutmann) of the cleartext on the tmpfs . I do this because I'm aware wiping files on a journaling file system is insecure, data may be recovered. For discussion, here're the relevant bits extracted: # make the tmpfs mkdir /mnt/tmpfs chmod 0700 /mnt/tmpfs mount -t tmpfs -o size=1M tmpfs /mnt/tmpfs cd /mnt/tmpfs # decrypt the data gpg -o - <crypted_input_file> | \ tar -xjpf - # do processing stuff # wipe contents find . -type f -exec bcwipe -I {} ';' # nuke the tmpfs cd .. umount -f /mnt/tmpfs rm -fR /mnt/tmpfs So, my question, assuming for the moment that nobody is able to read the cleartext in the tmpfs while it exists (I use umask to set cleartext to 0600), is there any way any trace of the cleartext could remain either in memory or on disk after the snippet above completes?

• DNS error only in IE

  Our Intranet page has stopped working on some machines/some user accounts. The error I am getting points to a DNS issue but If I ping the site from the command line the it responds fine. The error I'm gettting on IE is Error: The web filter could not find the address for the requested site Why are you seeing this: The system is unable too determine the IP address of intranet.example.com I'm not quite sure why it mentions the web filter as there is a proxy exception for the intranet page and if I run a trace route it doesn't go via the web proxy (filtering system). Finally it isn't affecting everyone, just random users, also it doesn't affect the random users on all the client machines they use. I have one user where it happens on any client they log onto where most its just certian clients. It's even "fixed" itself for a few peoples. EDIT: hey Mikey thanks for the fast response. Proxies are correct and automatic configuration is off (both via GPO)
