    I used the SQL Server management studio on a table with Create Script to New and did minor changes.   • SQL Compact - Hang on invalid file

    I use Linq to Sql Compact with code generated by sqlmetal. When I open an invalid database, like eg an mp3, I can create the DataContext without getting an Exception. But when I query any data or call DatabaseExists, the application hangs. Why is no exception thrown? Is this a known problem?

    I have SQL Server 2005 stored procedure. Someone one is calling my stored procedure within a transaction. In my stored proc I'm logging some information (insert into a table). When the higher level transaction rolls back it removes my insert. Is there anyway I can commit my insert and prevent the higher level rollback from removing my insert? Thanks

  • Ordering sql query results

    My sql query gives the columns: product_id (which is an integer) pnl (which is float - can be negative) I get more than 100 rows. I want to filter out the top 40 rows based on abs(pnl). But the results should be ordered by pnl column only and not by abs(pnl). I want to do this for MSSQL 2005. Is there a way to do this?

    Hi, I am trying to send database mail when error occurs inside the transaction.My setup for dbo.sp_send_dbmail is correct , when I execute the proc I do get an email within 1 min. However when I try to use dbo.sp_send_dbmail inside another proc within transactions than I do not get the email. Sql server does show in the result window that "Mail queued" but I never receive it. I am developing the application that stores current user and user's role to session state (System.Web.SessionState.HttpSessionState Page.Session). if (Session["username"] == null) Session.Add("username", User.Identity.Name); if (Session["isAdministrator"] == null) Session.Add("isAdministrator", User.IsInRole(domain + "\\Domain Admins")); After I check these session states in code behind for granting permissions to some excecution: if ((bool)Session["isAdministrator"] || computer.Administrators.Contains(Session["username"].ToString())) My question is next: how safe that mechanism is? Is it possible to change the session states using some JavaScript for example or some how else? Thanks :)

  • Oracle Open World 2012: SQL Developer Recap

    Last week was the ‘big show’ in San Francisco. I was very happy to meet many of you in person. And many of you had questions – lots of questions! We had full or overflowing rooms for our sessions and hands-on-labs. The SQL Developer ‘booths’ were also slammed several times. So exciting to see so many of YOU excited about SQL Developer. It’s very cool to hear the stories of our tools saving you and your organizations so much time (and money!) Instead of doing a Day 0 – Day 9 recap, I thought I’d share with you the questions that I heard more than once. And just for giggles, I’ll throw in some answers as well So in no particular order… What’s the difference between Oracle SQL Developer & Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler? Mathematically speaking – two words. But as far as the actual modeling features go, there’s no difference between the two applications. The same ‘code’ or features as it pertains to data modeling and design are in both tools. However, in SQL Developer you have all of the OTHER features fighting for real estate in the UI. So I have a general rule of thumb – if you spend MOST of your time in the database, use SQL Developer. And if you spend most of your time in the data model, run the separate and dedicated program, Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler. Here’s a couple of screenshots to drive home the UI point: Oracle SQL Developer Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler running INSIDE of SQL Developer. Notice how the Modeler menu items fold under the file menu? Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler Easier to navigate and manipulate your models with the stand alone modeler. Just no worksheet to run your ad-hoc queries, etc. Don’t forget you can disable the Data Modeler inside of SQL Developer via the Extensions preference page. How can I model my table partitions? Partitioning is defined via the Physical model. So after you have finished your relational model, you need to generate a physical model. Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler Physical Model and Partitioning Open the properties for your physical model table. Enable the ‘partitioned’ property. Once you do so, the ‘Partitioning’ page will activate. Lots and lots of partitioning support and options here But what about Interval Partitioning? An extension of range partitioning in 11gR2, we don’t currently support this partitioning scheme in SQL Developer. But we’re working on it! Can SQL Developer ignore column order when comparing models? Yes! After you start a model compare, one of your options is to disregard the order of an attribute or column definition. Tell SQL Developer you don’t care when your column shows up, just as long as it DOES show up. Wow, you got a lot of questions around modeling! Is that normal? Yes! While we appreciate that many folks inherit their applications and associated designs, new applications are being ‘born’ every day. Since both of our tools are free for anyone to design their new Oracle applications with, we attract a fair amount of attention I want to do a Hands On Lab. How do I get your software and instructional guides? Go here. Download VirtualBox. Then download the VB image. Import the appliance. Start it. Connect oracle/oracle on the OEL VM.   • Implementing a "state-machine" logic for methods required by an object in C++

    What I have: 1 hypothetical object/class + other classes and related methods that gives me functionality. What I want: linking this object to 0 to N methods in realtime on request when an event is triggered Each event is related to a single method or a class, so a single event does not necessarily mean "connect this 1 method only" but can also mean "connect all the methods from that class or a group of methods" Avoiding linked lists because I have to browse the entire list to know what methods are linked, because this does not ensure me that the linked methods are kept in a particular order (let's say an alphabetic order by their names or classes), and also because this involve a massive amount of pointers usage. Example: I have an object Employee Jon, Jon acquires knowledge and forgets things pretty easily, so his skills may vary during a period of time, I'm responsible for what Jon can add or remove from his CV, how can I implement this logic?

  • In a SSL web application, what would be the vulnerabilities of using session based authentication?

    I'm not sure the term even exists, so let me explain what I mean by "session based authentication" through some pseudo-code: void PerformLogin(string userName, string password) { if(AreValidCredentials(userName, password)) { Session.Set("IsAuthenticated", true); } else { Message.Show("Invalid credentials!"); } } So the above method simply verifies the provided credentials are valid and then sets a session flag to indicate that the session user is authenticated. Under plain HTTP that is obviously unsafe, because anyone could hijack the session cookie/querystring and breach security. However, under HTTPS the session cookie/querystring is protected because client-server communication is encrypted, so I believe this authentication approach would be safe, wouldn't it? I'm asking this because I want to know how authentication tickets can improve web applications security. Thanks in advance!

  • Can an object oriented program be seen as a Finite State Machine?

    This might be a philosophical/fundamental question, but I just want to clarify it. In my understanding a Finite State Machine is a way of modeling a system in which the system's output will not only depend on the current inputs, but also the current state of the system. Additionally, as the name suggests it, a finite state machine can be segmented in a finite N number of states with its respective state and behavior. If this is correct, shouldn't every single object with data and function members be a state in our object oriented model, making any object oriented design a finite state machine? If that is not the interpretation of a FSM in object design, what exactly people mean when they implement a FSM in software? am I missing something? Thanks
