  • Why can't I update to 11.04?

    I am using Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit, and I can browse the internet fine. I am typing this using the machine. When I attempt to use the Ubuntu Update Manager to update to 11.04, I get this error message: Failed to Fetch Fetching the upgrade failed.There may be a network problem. And when I try to change servers, here is what I get: Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/maverick/main/source/Sources.gz 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.91.15 80] It repeats with other lines, 404 not found. Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead. Any ideas?

  • fresh install, update and x-windows no longer working after login 12.10

    I Just recently installed desktop 12.10 on laptop, all was working fine logged in and it stated it wanted to update as it found updates. naturally I let it update and it asked me to reboot to use the new updates did that, now it boots fine i get login prompt. login as per normal then all i get is background with nothing else, if i turn off the wireless i get the disconnection notification pop up but i have nothing else on screen any wrror messages gets displayed as well but their is nothing. their was one program that failed that no longer prompts which gives options of reloading or just closing and continuing either way it just look like it hangs I can ctrl alt del to log out and it does that fine but still wont load no mater how many times i try saw a topic about a ati driver playing up which he typed the following in a ty which i can get to all of them as well. export DISPLAY=:0;gnome-shell --replace the answer i got back was the program gnome-shell is not installed you can install it by typing sudo apt-get install gnome-shell i also tried sudo pkill X which did nothing any help would be appreciated Thanks

    I am having a problem after the last update, the booting to command line problem I even can't start in the graphic fail system "xfail": X: cannot stat /etc/X11/X (no such file or directory), aborting I found some one mentioning a solution which is installing ubuntu-dektop though apt-get but it failed due to this error: Unmet dependencies " the dependencies are xserver-xorg-video-all and xserver-xorg-input" Tried to install these first also another dependencies problem. Solutions I tried: removing and installing nvidia driver removing and installing xserver Tried different versions of nvidia including the latest one which is the one I had before the update Any ideas?

  • How to force update-grub to use UUID?

    When I run "update-grub", the file "grub.cfg" will contain lines like this. menuentry 'Ubuntu...' { ... linux /boot/vmlinuz... root=/dev/md124 ... ... } For the line of linux, is it possible to let it use UUID? Like, linux /boot/vmlinux... root=UUID=xxx Right now, every time after I do update-grub, I have to manually edit the line to use UUID. Otherwise, the boot will fail. Thanks for the help.

  • How can I disable update checking on boot?

    I'm running off of a thumb drive with very average read/write speeds and automatic update checks makes the bootup far less pleasant. Since I manually update via apt there's truly no need to notify me like on a normal desktop. In older versions of Ubuntu there was an item to disable this behavior. On 12.04 this is no longer the case. would it be the 'unattended-upgrades' item in /etc/init.d? If yes, would simply removing the init script would solve my problem?

  • Ubuntu 12.04 - Read only file system+computer crash/freezes after an update that got interupted

    I've run into an error with Ubuntu while I was updating it. During the update my power went out and interrupted the update. When I finally got power and booted my computer, I received an error, telling me to remount ./ and basically told me I could press S to skip or F to fix. (I forgot exactly what it said) but anyways, I originally pressed F to fix, but that didn't solve the problem, so then I went into the terminal and I tried to remount that way, but I couldn't execute because it's stuck in "file system read only." Sorry, my description of the problem is dull. I'm debating on just reinstalling, but I have a ton of files I would like to keep, about 3+ years worth of websites I've built. Is there a proper way to fix this?

  • Ubuntu 11.10 not showing up in GRUB bootloader after update and restart :(

    I was using ubuntu 11.10 with gnome-shell. I installed various useful softwares and ran system update using update manager which ran smoothly and asked me to restart my comp at the end. I restarted it to find that Ubuntu entries were missing from the GRUB bootloader and only memory test and windows are showing up. I took a lot of pain in installing various important softwares and cannot afford a re-installation. Tried to boot from the live cd and installed boot-repair and after running it .. it wasnt working properly .. it was just showing that it was "scanning systems" for more than an hour. Kindly help.   • PC does not restart after last kernel update

    I was using ubuntu 12.04 perfectly im my desktop until last kernel update (3.2.0-51). After the update proccess and reboot the system, the unity inteface didn' t start. The only way to login in the system is by tty. I have tried the last kernel versions available in the computer, but I can't use the graphycal interface. Until the text terminals is impossible to access the unity interface. If I don't encounter a solution I will re-install the whole system. Anybody can help me?

  • 12.4 LTS after update fails to login

    An update today (30-11-2012) on 12.4 lead to failure to log in. The system gets through its boot process then presents the logins, on choosing any of these immediately returned to log-in screen with no error. Machine is an AMD FX 64 on an Asus MB using the built-in graphics. If no one knows what this might be, what's the alternative distro to Ubuntu? It's the second time something like this has happened after an update in three months, kudos to the Ubuntu team but I need more reliability. Cheers, thanks to all.

  • How would I go about updating my electronic circuit simulator's 'electricity'?

    I have made an application which allows the user to place down wires, power sources, and inverters on a virtual circuit board. All connections between tiles are automatic, as shown here: As you can see in the last image, the updating of power throughout this grid is not yet functioning. I think I understand how to do this updating conceptually, but getting it to work in my program is appearing to be much more difficult than I first imagined. My source code can be found here. If you have any tips as to how to I might approach this monstrous task, please let me know. EDIT The goal here is to simply get a working application. Getting tiles to pass on power to their neighbors is quite easy, but the tricky part is getting wires to "unpower" after the removal of a power source. The size of the grid is just 18x18, so efficiency really isn't a factor, for those wondering.

  • IIS 7.5 Manager crashes when adding a custom error page

    I'm running a local IIS 7.5 server in Win 7 Pro, and I'm trying to add a custom error page for 403 responses. When I click OK to add a custom error page for my site, IIS Manager just vanishes. The server is still running, and I can re-start IIS Manager, but the new page has not been saved. I've also tried adding it directly to web.config, but that just gives me The page cannot be displayed because an internal server error has occurred. Does anyone know why this might be happening? Edit: The event log implies that an invalid character in the path caused the crash, but It occured even when I copied & pasted a path from a valid entry.   • Cannot log into Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g: ORA-28001

    I can no longer log into Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g. I get this error message: ORA-28001: the password has expired (DBD ERROR: OCISessionBegin) I could log into the server using SQL*Plus. I warned me that the password was going to expire in 7 days (which is not the same as being already expired). Following advice from several documents, I ran these commands from SQL*Plus: ALTER USER sys IDENTIFIED BY new_password; ALTER USER system IDENTIFIED BY new_password; SQL*Plus no longer warns about passwords, but I still cannot use the Enterprise Manager. Then I followed this to remove password expiration: ALTER PROFILE default LIMIT password_life_time UNLIMITED And I've also restarted the Oracle services. In case it was using cached credentials, I've tried to connect from several browsers in several computers. No way: I still get ORA-28001 in Enterprise Manager. What am I missing?   • Updating a specific key/value inside of an array field with MongoDB

    As a preface, I've been working with MongoDB for about a week now, so this may turn out to be a pretty simple answer. I have data already stored in my collection, we will call this collection content, as it contains articles, news, etc. Each of these articles contains another array called author which has all of the author's information (Address, Phone, Title, etc). The Goal - I am trying to create a query that will update the author's address on every article that the specific author exists in, and only the specified author block (not others that exist within the array). Sort of a "Global Update" to a specific article that affects his/her information on every piece of content that exists. I thought I was on the right track, and here's what I've tried. b.content.update( {authors: {$elemMatch: {slug: 'joe-somebody'} } }, {$set: {address: '1234 Avenue Rd.'} }, false, true ); I just believe there's something I am missing in the $set statement to specify the correct author and point inside of the correct array.   • How to update maven local repository with newer artifacts from a remote repository?

    My maven module A has a dependency on another maven module B provided by other people. When I run "mvn install" under A for the first time, maven downloads B-1.0.jar from a remote repository to my local maven repository. My module A builds fine. In the mean time, other people are deploying newer B-1.0.jar to the remote repository. When I run "mvn install" under A again, maven does not download the newer B-1.0.jar from the remote repository to my local repository. As a result, my module A build fails due to API changes in B-1.0.jar. I could manually delete B-1.0.jar from my local repository. Then maven would download the latest B-1.0.jar from the remote repository the next time when I run "mvn install". My question is how I can automatically let maven download the latest artifacts from a remote repository. I tried to set updatePolicy to "always". But that did not do the trick.

  • What are your suggestions for best practises for regular data updates in a website database?

    My shared-hosting asp.net website must automatically run data update routines at regular times of day. Once it has finished running certain update routines, it can run update routines that are dependent on the previous updates. I have done this type of work before, using quite complicated setups. Some features of the framework I created are: A cron job from another server makes a request which starts a data update routine on the main server Each updater is loaded from web.config Each updater overrides a "canRunUpdate" method that determines whether its dependencies have finished updating Each updater overrides a "hasFinishedUpdate" method Each updater overrides a "runUpdate" method Updaters start and run in parallel threads The initial request from the cron job server started each updater in its own thread and then ended. As a result, the threads containing the updaters would be terminated before the updaters were finished. Therefore I had to give the updaters the ability to save partial results and continue the update job next time they are started up. As a result, the cron server had to call the updater many times to ensure the job is done. Sometimes the cron server would continue making update requests long after all the updates were completed. Sometimes the cron server would finish calling the update requests and leave some updates uncompleted. It's not the best system. I'm looking for inspiration. Any ideas please? Thank you :)
