    - by user3215
Does anybody know how to apply a customized user settings to other existing or new users?. Something like a customized preferences settings for system wide so that everybody posses those settings and below will explain in clear what I actually ment. On every machine I will install the following: Eclipse Mysql Query Browser and Admin Mysql Workbench Oracle VirtualBox Thunderbird ----------- ----------- ----------- If I install them by apt, this will automatically create shortcuts in Applications but when I build them from source or extract the tar ball, I will have to add New Item at it's relevant place going to System-->Preferences-->Main Menu to make them available as a shortcuts and this settings are applied only for the account I login and perform them. How could I make this preferences settings for complete system wide which applies for all users? or if there is a way to apply a customized user settings to other users will also be ok. Any hint please? Thank you!

  • Why is my system freezing when I switch users

    - by ZeroDivide
Hello I've recently upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10 64bit. I'm running AMD graphics with the proprietary drivers. I have two user accounts. Mine(administrator) and my girlfriend's(standard) My girlfriend clicks "switch user" from my lock screen and logs in fine. I then try to click "switch user" from her lock screen and everything goes black. Then the monitor blinks on and off with just a single cursor. I have no way to access the terminal, the system is unresponsive and I have to hit the power button. Even ctrl + alt + f4 or ctrl + alt + t doesn't get me a terminal. When I press the power button on my system, it does start printing out the shutdown sequence on the monitor. Here is my .xsession-errors Script for ibus started at run_im. Script for auto started at run_im. Script for default started at run_im. Here is hers: init: at-spi2-registryd main process ended, respawning init: at-spi2-registryd main process ended, respawning init: at-spi2-registryd main process ended, respawning init: at-spi2-registryd main process ended, respawning init: at-spi2-registryd main process ended, respawning init: at-spi2-registryd main process ended, respawning init: at-spi2-registryd main process ended, respawning init: at-spi2-registryd main process ended, respawning init: at-spi2-registryd main process ended, respawning init: at-spi2-registryd main process ended, respawning init: at-spi2-registryd respawning too fast, stopped init: logrotate main process (4726) killed by TERM signal init: upstart-dbus-session-bridge main process (4865) terminated with status 1 init: gnome-settings-daemon main process (4843) terminated with status 1 init: gnome-session main process (4852) terminated with status 1 init: unity-panel-service main process (4863) killed by KILL signal I found some advice in a forum to look for at-spi2-registryd in my system logs. • WWW.yoursite.com or HTTP://yoursite.com which one is futureproof?

http://yoursite.com www.yoursite.com http://www.yoursite.com yoursite.com Which of these would you choose as your favourite to work with, if you were to make a site for 2011 and beyond, which domainname would you provide to clients, websites linking to you, your letterhead, contact cards. Why one OR other? Which to avoid? Thinking of the following aspects: validity, correctly loading URL audience, most geeks know http://, most seniors/clients don't easiest to remember / URL as a brand misspellings by user input (in mobile phone or desktop browser) browsers not understanding protocol-less links total length of chars for easy user input method of peferance by major search engines/social media sites consistency sothat links dont fragment but all point to the same

  • Why does switching users completely hang my system every time?

    - by Stéphane
I have a fresh install of 11.04 64bit, with 2 administrator accounts and 4 normal accounts. The 4 normal accounts (the kids' accounts) don't have passwords, they can login simply by clicking on their names. When any of the users -- either admin or normal -- tries to switch to another account by clicking in the top-right corner of the screen and selecting another user, the screen goes black and the entire system locks up. Even CTRL+ALT+F1 through F7 does nothing. This is reproducible 100% of the time on this system. I can ssh into the box when the console locks up, and by running top, I see that Xorg is consuming about 100% of the CPU. Looking at the output of "ps axfu" in bash while the system is in this "locked up" state, here is the lightdm and X process tree: USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND root 1153 0.0 0.1 183508 4292 ? • Checking whether the user input is a str in Python [migrated]

    - by Sahil Babbar
I checked various questions on Stack Overflow but one thing every logic lacks. Let me demonstrate using Python: while True: user_input = raw_input() if type(user_input) == str: print 'ERROR' else: print 'BINGO' Also, we cannot use input() in place of raw_input() as it gives the error:Traceback (most recent call last): File ".\test.py", line 3, in <module> user_input = int(input()) File "<string>", line 1, in <module> NameError: name 'asdf' is not defined The problem here is that raw_input converts the user input into string so it always prints 'ERROR' and if I change the second line to user_input = int(raw_input) then, it gives an error: Traceback (most recent call last): File ".\test.py", line 3, in <module> user_input = int(raw_input()) ValueError: invalid literal for int() with base 10: 'asdf' I tried this with try and except but it shall work fine to check integer but not a string. I feel that this question may be marked as a duplicate but I think that this query is important, if logically taken.

  • Some doubts about the use of usermod and groupmod command

    - by AndreaNobili
I am not yet a true "Linux guy" and I have the following doubts about how exactly do the following shell procedure (a list of commands steps) founded in a tutorial that I am following (I want deeply understand what I am doing before do it): sudo passwd root then login again as root usermod -l miner pi usermod -m -d /home/miner miner groupmod -n miner pi exit So at the beginning it enable the root account and I have to login again in the system as root...this is perfectly clear for me. And now I have the followings doubts: 1) The usermod command: usermod -l miner pi usermod -m -d /home/miner miner Reading the official documentation of the usermod command I understand that this command modify the informations related to an existing account Reading the documentation it seems to me that the -l parmether modify the name of the user pi in miner and then the -m -d paramether move the contents of the old home directory to the new one (named miner) and use this new directory as home directory My doubt is: what exactly do the executions of these operation? I think that: Rename the existing pi user in miner Then move the content of the old home directory (the pi home directory? or what?) into a new directory (/home/miner) that now is the home directory for the miner user. Is it right? The the second doubt is related to this command groupmod -n miner pi It seems to me that change the group name from pi in miner But what exactly is a group in Linux and why is it used? Tnx

  • Changed profiles; lost Ubuntu; how do I get it back?

    - by Tim
Installed Ubuntu-secure-remix 12.10 in a dual boot with Windows 8 on an HP laptop. A first-time Linux user, I was exploring settings when I changed profiles (not sure what I changed it to). Now the Linux boots into what I believe is the shell. I can still log in (that is, I am already a user - so that's still there). Due possibly to using rEFInd, I cannot figure how to run Ubuntu in recovery mode. How can I get Ubuntu back up and running again? Thanks in advance.

  • is OpenID really that bad?

    - by DoPPler
I have seen this question on Quora where lots of people seem to agree that OpenID is bad, even going as far as stating that: OpenID is the worst possible "solution" I have ever seen in my entire life to a problem that most people don't really have Then I've seen articles and tweets referencing that question saying that OpenID has lost, and Facebook won. It's sad to read as I quite like the OpenID (or at least idea behind it). I literally hate getting yet another login/password for page (I'll forget it anyway) - it's a pretty serious issue for me and I know lots of people with the same problem. Thus I thought that OpenId is a great solution but I'm not sure anymore. So the question is should I still bother to implement OpenID or it's not worth it? What is the most robust and convenient (from the user perspective) way to identify and authenticate an user?

  • Does a program need to respond straight to the point or politely? [migrated]

    - by Fabian Bigler
I wonder if it's better if the program responds straight to the point or politely. Consider the following example: The user clicks a button to print something based on a template. However, the template does not exist. Which feedback would you prefer: The template is not defined yet. Please make sure to set the template before you print it out. Make sure to configure the template before printing. The first statement is more polite. The user feels treated well. The second statement is more straight forward and faster understood. What is generally better?

  • What things need to be considered when redeveloping the whole UI for a web app?

    - by Robin
I am the lead developer on a thick client web app (Java swing) which we're looking at recreating as a web app. We're part way through some initial work, have chosen a framework on the server and integrated with our previous backend code. We're just starting to get into the client side of things, looking at javascript frameworks etc. The previous system was pretty sensibly architected so the logic is already serverside. The challenge ahead of us is really about redeveloping the user interface rather than anything else. What would be the list of things to consider in redeveloping the entire user interface for any application? I'm trying to get an idea of how large a task might still be ahead of me and the team.

  • User/Group Policies in Windows 2000 domain controller

    - by Chris
In Server 2000 active directory, I have 5 groups of users and every user has different policies. The problem is that a different desktop loads for only one specific user no matter what changes I make in administrative templates. If I copy this user profile and paste it into another group with a different name, windows workaround loads as it should, but some policies are not applied. Does anybody know a way to solve this problem instead of creating a new group and user from scratch?

  • Allow users to ssh to specific user through ldap and stored public keys

    - by iElectric
I recently setup gitolite, where users access git repository with "gitolite" user through ssh. Now I would like to integrate that into LDAP. Each user has pubkey in LDAP and if he has "git" objectClass, he would be able to access "gitolite" user through ssh. I know it's possible to store public keys in LDAP, I'm not sure if it possible to allow authentication in "gitosis" account based on objectClass. EDIT: To clarify, with objectClass git, user "foobar" would be able to login as "gitolite" through ssh

  • Default user profile getting filled with temp ie files

    - by Christoffer
I have several Windows Server 2003 Terminal servers to service our domain users. Sometimes the Default User profile (C:\Documents and Settings\Default User) gets filled with tempoary internet files, so when a new user logs in, he gets a 1GB profile (instead of 20MB) that fills up the server fast. Why is it the default user profile gets filled up with files like that, by who and how do i prevent this?

  • Postfix server to receive emails for anyonymous user

    - by sachitad
I have a postfix server configured with imap. Only the recipient with the user account in the system is accepted. For example: rcpt to: test@localhost will yield the following error: 550 5.1.1 <test@localhost>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in local recipient table What I want to achieve is setup virtual maps which accepts email to all the users (even if the user doesn't accept in the system) then forward all those emails to a specific user mailbox. Is something like this, possible?

  • Can Gitosis enforce correct user name/email?

    - by koumes21
Gitosis is able to authenticate users based on public/private key pair. It is able to find out which user is currently committing. However, the user name and email is taken from the client's Git configuration ('git config user.name' etc.), which can be set to arbitrary values. Is there any way to associate user names and emails with their public keys and then make Gitosis uses these names and emails as the name and email of the committer?

  • Change default root user with a new one on Ubuntu Server

    - by MultiformeIngegno
I have a VPS, until now I used the default root user for SSH access and everything. For security reasons I'd like to use a different user for root, terminal access and sudo operations. So I created another user, gave him the sudo and every other perm. The problem is that all the system files belongs to root. What happens if I set PermitRootLogin No for root? Those files wouldn't be editable by the new root user!

  • How to create a local user with the same name as a likewise domain user?

    - by JamesRyan
I need to create a local user with the same name as a domain user under CentOS with Likewise installed. When I use Useradd it says user exists, because a domain user with the same name exists. It is a service account for backup and does not work using a domain account. On machines where the local account was added before likewise was installed it works fine. Is there a way to temporarily disable this check?

I know i can probably login as the git user and do this, but is there any other way? Update: Using Linux AMI 12.09 (micro-instance), in region us-east-1 (N. Virginia)

  • how can I parse and group/do stats on user agent strings?

    - by user151841
I have a database that has the various user-agent strings of visitors to our site. I'd like to do a 'survey' of them to see what browsers our users are using, so that I can know what features I can use in future development. Is there a tool to parse and run statistics on user-agent strings, or a bunch of strings like this? Ideally, I'd like to see a hierarchical grouping of the stats. For instance: Opera/9.80 (Windows Mobile; WCE; Opera Mobi/WMD-50301; U; en) Presto/2.4.13 Version/10.00 Opera/9.80 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/4.2.14912/1280; U; en) Presto/2.2.0 Opera/9.80 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/4.2.13918/812; U; en) Presto/2.2.0 Opera/9.64 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X; U; en) Presto/2.1.1 Opera/9.60 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/4.2.13918/786; U; en) Presto/2.2.0 Opera/9.60 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/4.0.10992/432; U; en) Presto/2.2.0 I'd like to see 6 entries for Opera, broken down into 3 for 9.80, 1 for 9.64 and 2 for 9.60, and so forth for all browsers. Other dimensions, such as OS, would cross the boundaries of the browser version hierarchy, but it might be nice to see also.

  • Is it possible to have WAMP run httpd.exe as user [myself] instead of local SYSTEM?

    - by Olivier H
Hello! I run a django application over apache with mod_wsgi, using WAMP. A certain URL allows me to stream the content of image files, the paths of which are stored in database. The files can be located whether on local machine or under network drive (\my\network\folder). With the development server (manage.py runserver), I have no trouble at all reading and streaming the files. With WAMP, and with network drive files, I get a IOError : obviously because the httpd instance does not have read permission on said drive. In the task manager, I see that httpd.exe is run by SYSTEM. I would like to tell WAMP to run the server as [myself] as I have read and write permissions on the shared folder. (eventually, the production server should be run by a 'www-admin' user having the permissions) Mapping the network shared folder on a drive letter (Z: for instance) does not solve this at all. The User/Group directives in httpd.conf do not seem to have any kind of influence on Apache's behaviour. I've also regedited : I tried to duplicate the HKLM[...]\wampapache registry key under HK_CURRENT_USER\ and rename the original key, but then the new key does not seem to be found when I cmd this > httpd.exe -n wampapache -k start or when I run WAMP. I've run out of ideas :) Has anybody ever had the same issue?

  • Exception thrown in YUI: "Sizzle" is not defined!

    - by nanobyt3
Hi, We are using HTML Unit v2.6 with Web-Harvest and extended its functionality to create a new element <web session="sess1" browser="firefox2"> <web-getpage url="https://www.linkedin.com/secure/login"/> <web-setinput name="uname">username</web-setinput> <web-setinput name="pwd">password</web-setinput> <web-clickinput name="login"/> </web> When we run this we get an exception while the element loads the URL specified. The details are as below: Caused by: net.sourceforge.htmlunit.corejs.javascript.EcmaError: TypeError: Cannot find function hasOwnProperty in object net.sourceforge.htmlunit.corejs.javascript.EcmaError: ReferenceError: "Sizzle" is not defined. at net.sourceforge.htmlunit.corejs.javascript.ScriptRuntime.constructError(ScriptRuntime.java:3651) at net.sourceforge.htmlunit.corejs.javascript.ScriptRuntime.constructError(ScriptRuntime.java:3629) at net.sourceforge.htmlunit.corejs.javascript.ScriptRuntime.typeError(ScriptRuntime.java:3657) at net.sourceforge.htmlunit.corejs.javascript.ScriptRuntime.typeError2(ScriptRuntime.java:3676) at net.sourceforge.htmlunit.corejs.javascript.ScriptRuntime.notFunctionError(ScriptRuntime.java:3740) at net.sourceforge.htmlunit.corejs.javascript.ScriptRuntime.getPropFunctionAndThisHelper(ScriptRuntime.java:2249) at net.sourceforge.htmlunit.corejs.javascript.ScriptRuntime.getPropFunctionAndThis(ScriptRuntime.java:2216) at net.sourceforge.htmlunit.corejs.javascript.Interpreter.interpretLoop(Interpreter.java:1501) at net.sourceforge.htmlunit.corejs.javascript.Interpreter.interpret(Interpreter.java:845) at net.sourceforge.htmlunit.corejs.javascript.InterpretedFunction.call(InterpretedFunction.java:164) at net.sourceforge.htmlunit.corejs.javascript.ContextFactory.doTopCall(ContextFactory.java:427) at com.gargoylesoftware.htmlunit.javascript.HtmlUnitContextFactory.doTopCall(HtmlUnitContextFactory.java:263) at net.sourceforge.htmlunit.corejs.javascript.ScriptRuntime.doTopCall(ScriptRuntime.java:3058) at net.sourceforge.htmlunit.corejs.javascript.InterpretedFunction.exec(InterpretedFunction.java:175) at com.gargoylesoftware.htmlunit.javascript.JavaScriptEngine$5.doRun(JavaScriptEngine.java:415) at com.gargoylesoftware.htmlunit.javascript.JavaScriptEngine$HtmlUnitContextAction.run(JavaScriptEngine.java:520) ... 42 more As it appears that 'Sizzle' (present in YUI3) is causing this. We then checked the same in Firefox and IE but neither of the browsers showed any error of 'Sizzle' not being defined. Also we tried to use latest snapshot of htmlunit, but had same issue. Is this a limitation(bug) of HTML Unit JavaScript engine? OR Is there anyway to configure HTML Unit to handle this exception? If anyone has already had such an issue, please do let us know. Any help is very much appreciated. Thanks in advance !
