• Suggestions for a good IDE for DB2

  Hi all, I know, I know... it's a horrible fate but I am forced to work in an environment with DB2 on the back end. OK just kidding but the truth is I do like MSSQL's data studio a lot, and well IBM's tool is sorda crummy in my opinion... I was using the free version of Toad but I just got a new 64bit machine which is nice and all but there isn't a free version of Toad that I can find for win7 64. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good IDE to use with DB2? Being a developer I really just do a lot of looking at the DB structure and querying to see what I get back and how I want to get things back etc... Thanks for any advice!

• Vista Basic theme ribbon issue

  Under Vista, when in Basic theme, after calling IUIFramework::Destroy() the Vista theme is lost, and enlarging the window does not display outside of the initial area. You can repro it easily with the SimpleRibbon SDK sample. In simpleribbon.cpp, insert in the WndProc switch block: case WM_KEYUP: DestroyFramework(); InvalidateRect(hWnd, NULL, TRUE); break; Compile, run, hit a key and try to enlarge in Vista Basic Theme (no problem in Win7 or Vista aero or Windows classic). • Building SL4 + RIAServices app takes too long on VS2010.

  Got a Win7 box with VS2010 Premium installed on it. Building desktop apps works just fine. But we got this solution with 15 SL4 and 21 desktop projects... Building the SL part of it takes too long. This is very irritating and encourages to drop TDD since every time I run a test it takes ~3 seconds for msbuild to find out that nothing changed and the project should be skipped. The projects are very small and there's nothing fancy in them and we hadn't any problems before we switched from VS2008+SL3. I've heard people complaining abound VS2010 speed in general, but nothing about SL4 build time. Is anyone experiencing same problems and is there any workaround for this?

• Why does Indy 10's echo server have high CPU usage when the client disconnects?

  When I disconnect echo client like : EchoClient1.Disconnect; client disconnects fine... but EchoServer does NOT EVEN register client disconnection and it ends up with high process usage !?!? in every example and every doc it says that calling EchoClient.Disconnect is sufficient ! anyone, any idea ? (I am working in Win7, cloud that be a problem ?) • WCF client hangs on response

  I have a WCF client (running on Win7) pointing to a WebSphere service. All is good from a test harness (a little test fixture outside my web app) but when my calls to the service originate from my web project one of the calls is extremely slow to deserialize (it takes up to 10 times longer) and not just the first time. I can see from fiddler that the response comes back quickly but then the WCF client hangs on the response itself for more than a minute before the next line of code is hit by the debugger, almost if the client was having trouble deserializing. This happens only if in the response I have a given pdf string, base64 encoded chunked. If for example the service raises a fault (this pdf string is not there) then the response is deserialized immediately. Again, If I send the exact same envelope through Soap-UI or from outside the web project all is good. I am at loss - What should I be looking for and is there some config setting that might do the trick? Any help appreciated!

• Visual Studio 2008 error while debugging an app with "uiAccess=true" in the manifest

  I have a C# WinForms application that has "uiAccess" set to "True" in it's manifest file. When I try to start/debug it in Visual Studio 2008 SP1 under Windows 7 x64 (RTM) I get this error: Running an Accessibility application requires following the steps described in Help. The help button is a broken link, and clicking ok just closes the application. It is digitally signed, and I can start it just fine in Windows Explorer. • In DirectShow, what determines the graph source?

  Hi all, I have two machines - A (XP SP2) and B (Win7). Machine B has trouble playing OGM files - enabling subtitles causes a crash in the player. Investigation shows that the DirectShow graphs are quite different. On A, the source is a file source, which produces a stream of subtype OGG, which goes into "Ogg Splitter". On B, the source is an instance of Haali Media Splitter, which produces video, audio, and subtitles as separate streams. Machine A has Haali splitter installed as well, but it is not invoked somehow. Question - what determines the source filter? Is there a file type to preferred source mapping, or does the system load and ask all suitable filters if they would take this file? On machine A, the merit of Haali splitter is higher than that of File source, so it's probably not about relative merits.

• Resources for Win32 C/C++ programming

  I have experience in a variety of languages (Java, Perl, C#, PHP, javascript, ansi-C for microprocessors, Objective-C and others), with Win32 programming not being an area I've done a lot of work in. Now part of my job entails maintaining a large Win32 codebase that stretches back 15 years and includes everything from C written originally for Win95 to MFC to COM to 64-bit code for Win7 to C++ using Boost and so on. If there's a variation on how to do something it's in there. Are there any good Win32 C/C++ references that discuss both the proper way to do things today and give you a little sense of how things evolved? Something like this discussion of all the various boolean types, or how to approach the API monstrosity of simply copying a string. I don't see my career heading too far down this path, but I do like to understand what I'm working with and I think this is an important part of programming history. thanks, Eric

• C#. Struct design. Why 16 byte is recommended size?

  I read Cwalina book (recommendations on development and design of .NET apps). He says that good designed struct has to be less than 16 bytes in size (for performance purpose). My questions is - why exactly is this? And (more important) can I have larger struct with same efficiency if I run my .NET 3.5 (soon to be .NET 4.0) 64-bit application on i7 under Win7 x64 (is this limitation CPU / OS based)? Just to stress again - I need as efficient struct as it is possible. I try to keep it in stack all the time, the application is heavily multi-threaded and runs on sub-millisecond intervals, the current size of the struct is 64 byte.

• Open default browser as standard user (C++)

  I'm currently using ShellExecute "open" to open a URL in the user's browser, but running into a bit of trouble in Win7 and Vista because the program runs elevated as a service. When ShellExecute opens the browser, it seems to read the "Local Admin" profile instead of the user's. So for example, if the user at the keyboard has Firefox as his default browser, it may open IE (which is the admin's default). I know that the "runas" verb can be used to elevate, but how do you do it the other way around? Is there a way to open a URL in the default browser on a standard user's desktop from a service?

• Does SetThreadPriority cause thread reschedulling?

  Consider following situation, assuming single CPU system: thread A is running with a priority THREAD_PRIORITY_NORMAL, signals event E thread B with a priority THREAD_PRIORITY_LOWEST is waiting for an event E (Note: at this point the thread is not scheduled because it is runnable, but A is higher priority and runnable as well) thread A calls SetThreadPriority(B, THREAD_PRIORITY_ABOVE_NORMAL) Is thread B re-scheduled immediately to run, or is thread A allowed to continue until current time-slice is over, and B is scheduled only once a new time-slice has begun? I would be interested to know the answer for WinXP, Vista and Win7, if possible. Note: the scenario above is simplified from my real world code, where multiple threads are running on multiple cores, but the main object of the question stays: does SetThreadPriority cause thread scheduling to happen?

• Why is Drupal writing to root and not sites/default/files?

  I'm using Drupal 6.14 on Win7. Everything seems to work except files that should be written to sites/default/files are trying to be written to /. The site was moved from a linux installation, which is writing the files correctly. I have setup a web.config w/ the rewrite rules for drupal. Not sure what or where else I should check. • Add a Sleep Timer to Windows 7 Media Center

  Do you make it a habit of falling asleep at night while watching Windows Media Center? Today we are going to take a look at the MC7 Sleep Timer for Windows 7 Media Center. This simple little plugin allows you to schedule an automatic shutdown time in Media Center. Note: At this point MC7 Sleep Timer doesn’t work with extenders. If you’re using ClamAV or Panda it may detect this plugin as a virus, we’ve tested it and this is a false positive for these two antivirus apps. Installation and Usage Download and install MC7 Sleep Timer. (See download below) After the installation is finished, you will find MC7 Sleep Timer located in the Media Center Extras Library. Click on the tile to open the timer and configure your settings. The MC7 Sleep Timer will open in full screen mode. • Can't fix broken packages

  I am too dumb but determined to use Ubuntu that I paid a professional to install it for me (dualboot 11.10 with Win7). When I came home I got a lot of things from the software center. Skype did not have a download button so I googled it and Ubuntu help told me to do this: sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ $(lsb_release -sc) partner" and then this: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install skype The terminal told me "that this is potentially harmful..." but I thought it was Ubuntu language meaning "are you sure?" Now the computer is mute. Items cannot be installed or removed until the package catalog is repaired, so I want to repair it but the package operation fails. "sudo aptitude -f install" - command not found Synaptic package manager tells me that I have two broken packages, libc6 and libc6-dev so I do this: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade which tells me to do this: sudo apt-get -f install that ends up like this: Can't exec "locale": No such file or directory at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/Encoding.pm line 16. • WiFi connected to router, but no internet connection

  I just got a new notebook, a ThinkPad Edge E530, and installed Ubuntu on it. I'm pretty new to Ubuntu. On the same laptop, running Windows 7, the Wi-Fi connection works fine. Ethernet connection works both on Win7 and on Ubuntu. Only Wi-Fi on Ubuntu does not work; it connects to the Wi-Fi access point but I don't have Internet access. • Can see samba shares but not access them

  For the life of me I cannot figure this one out. I have samba installed and set up on the ubuntu box and on the Win7 box I CAN SEE all the shares I created. I created two users on ubuntu that map to the users in windows. On ubuntu they are both admins, user A & B on Windows User A is admin and user B is poweruser. User A can see both shares and access them, but user B can see everythin, but only access the homes directory, the other directory throws an error. I had this setup before on windows, but after what happened I am NEVER going back to windows, so Unix here I am to stay! I am really stuck. I am running Ubuntu 11. I could reformat again and put on version 10 if that would make life easier. I have been dealing with this since Wed. 3pm. Thanks.

• Fail to start windows after Ubuntu 11.10 install

  Computer: HP Pavilion dv7-6140eo OS: Originally Win7 I recently decided to try out Ubuntu, and I decided to dual-boot it with Windows 7. First I googled some how-to's, then I downloaded Ubuntu onto a memory stick and made a second partition (I originally only had one partition that I shrunk and used the unallocated space to install onto during the Ubuntu install). During the install I set format type to xt4 (or something, it was the default option), chose the "in the beginning" option and set the last option as "\". The install was successful. Although, when I restarted my computer I weren't able to choose which operating system to start; it went right into windows. After showing the windows logo for half a second before rebooting, I get a blue screen (see bottom of the page). Trying to fix it, I deleted the newly made partition I had just installed Ubuntu onto (seeing it wasn't working either). This made no difference. I proceeded with installing Ubuntu again, so I would at least have a functioning computer, and now Ubuntu works fine (on it now). The only difference on start-up is that I get a Grub window asking me to between several options including Linux and Windows 7 (loader). Now, if I choose Windows 7, I get the message "Windows was unable to start. A recent software or hardware change might be the cause". It recommends me to choose the first option of the two it provides; to start start-up repair tool. The second option being starting windows normally. If I start windows normally, the same thing happens as earlier. My computer does not have a windows installation CD. Although, it has (at least it used to, if I haven't screwed that too up) a 17gb recovery partition. In addition I made an image of the computer onto a external hard drive when I first got it. Though, I have no idea how to use either. If anyone has any idea how I can make windows work again or reinstall it (already backed up my files) it would be greatly appreciated. I still prefer to dual boot between the two functioning operating systems, but I will settle for a functioning windows 7. Thanks a lot for any replies. • Cannot boot from K/Ubuntu install disk on my UEFI system

  I just got a new system and have been trying to get it set up w/ Win7 & Kubuntu dual-boot, but I've got a major problem. The BIOS of my motherboard (an Asus Crosshair 990FX) is strictly UEFI -- there is no legacy support mode available. I've been reading up on how to get Kubuntu installed in UEFI mode but no matter what I try I cannot seem to even boot into my install CD/USB key properly. I can get as far as the selection screen ("Try Kubuntu", "Install Kubuntu"...) but this screen starts off not appearing correctly. If I try moving the cursor around it sometimes seems to correct itself and show me my choices. But once I select "Try Kubuntu" it starts loading, the screen goes black and then proceeds to flicker -- about once every 5-10 seconds or so. This continues indefinitely. I've tried this with both Kubuntu & Ubuntu installation media, even the AMD64+Mac Ubuntu variety that is supposed to be a lot more flexible w.r.t. UEFI. The only hint I've had that the system might have booted correctly is a little drum sound that plays when booting from the Ubuntu install disk. Well, that and the fact that when I hit my system's power button it seems to shut down correctly, even ejecting the CD at the end. This might be a video driver issue; my system has two nVidia 550's, one of which is attached to my primary monitor. (The secondary isn't hooked up yet.) I'll keep looking over similar questions but any advice would be greatly appreciated. UPDATE: I've tried booting into my 12.04 install CD twice now, each time using two different options supplied by my BIOS. One seemed to offer the ability to boot into my CD under UEFI mode -- this didn't even produce the initial boot menu. The other method offers the ability to boot into my CD NOT under UEFI mode. This DOES produce the boot menu, but after this point it seems I still cannot get to a proper video mode to see what's going on.

  System is Win7x64 Pro on Core i7-920, 12GB I'm experiencing some system flakiness and am trying to pin down the cause. SMART shows zero bad sectors, zero pending reallocations on all drives Memory tests show no problems. Chkdsk fails in various different ways: When run from a normal command line (no /f option) it gets to 63% and then hangs When run on boot (autocheck) it hangs immediately on starting. Actually, the countdown timer (Press any key to skip chkdsk) gets to 1 second and the system hangs. When run from the F8 "Repair System" option (the Win7 "recovery console"), with /f, it runs to about 63% (end of stage 2) and then fails as follows:   Volume label is OS. CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)... 5068288 file records processed. File verification completed. 308 large file records processed. 0 bad file records processed. 2 EA records processed. 77 reparse records processed. CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 3)... 63 percent complete. (6078872 of 7562028 index entries processed) An unspecified error occurred (696e647863686b2e e19). Unable to obtain a handle to the event log. Googling and searching on Technet for the error code and "Unable to obtain a handle to the event log" both turn up nothing useful. Anybody have any info on what the problem is?

• Apache - child process exited with status 255

  I am running Windows 7 64-bit with an older version of (Apache 2.0.59) and PHP 5.2 - just switched from XP and wanted to keep the same versions. Everything will initially be working fine, but then I'll be trying to load a page and Apache crashes. I'll get an error in the browser that says "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading." Then Apache stops running. Sometimes it can be restarted, but then crashes again on the next page load. Sometimes it can't even be restarted at all. Looking in the Apache error logs, I see a series of messages that goes something like: [notice] Apache/2.0.59 (Win32) PHP/5.2.13 configured -- resuming normal operations [notice] Server built: Jul 27 2006 15:55:03 [notice] Parent: Created child process 1220 [notice] Child 1220: Child process is running [notice] Child 1220: Acquired the start mutex. [notice] Child 1220: Starting 250 worker threads. [notice] Parent: child process exited with status 255 -- Restarting. I have just come from Win XP where I never had any problems - is this an issue with my Apache version on Win7? Or perhaps it's a configuration issue? • How to disable monitor auto detection in Windows 7?

  I am currently running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit with a dual monitor setup with an NVIDIA 7950 GT graphics card. One monitor is dedicated to this machine and the other monitor is connected to a DVI KVM switch. When I switch to my other computer, Windows 7 disables the monitor. However, when I switch back it does not re-enable the monitor. The only circumstance that automatically re-enables the second monitor is when I switch back after Windows has put the monitors into power save mode. I am continually having to bring up the NVIDIA control panel to have it re-enable the monitor. Under Windows XP I would just disable the NVIDIA service to prevent it from auto-detecting the monitor (which doesn't solve the problem under Win7), and in Vista there was a registry hack that would prevent this. It looks as though that has been removed in Windows 7. I have found similar questions posted on this site, but nothing that matches my problem exactly.   I am trying to re-install ASP.NET on IIS7 running in Win7/64, which magically stopped working all of as sudden. When I run aspnet_regiis -i, I get an error message that says Finished installing ASP.NET (4.0.30319). Setup has detected some errors during the operation. For details, please read the setup log file C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\ASPNETSetup_00031.log Looking at the log, it reports Failure Changing IIS ApplicationHost.config: IIS7Register failed with HRESULT 800700b7: 'Cannot create a file when that file already exists. ' The real problem surfaces when trying to access an ASP.NET web page from that server: HTTP Error 500.21 - Internal Server Error Handler "PageHandlerFactory-Integrated" has a bad module "ManagedPipelineHandler" in its module list and Most likely causes: Managed handler is used; however, ASP.NET is not installed or is not installed completely. There is a typographical error in the configuration for the handler module list. So it seems ASP.NET has NOT been properly re-installed. Now, I am aware of the alleged one-and-only remedy for this, repeated all over the Web, and referenced for example here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dougste/archive/2010/09/06/errors-installing-asp-net-4-0.aspx Except that the proposed solution does not work for me. I have expanded the %windir% macros within isapiCgiRestriction section for .NET 4.0 - and aspnet_regiis still fails for me. Any other ideas?

• Diagnosing permission problems with Cobian Backup to network share

  I'm running the latest Cobian 11. I have a Synology DS412 NAS. All of my machines (Mac and Windows) access this just fine when I'm logged in and I browse to it manually. I have Cobian installed as a service on two Windows machines: WinXP SP3 and Win7 x64. On both machines, the service is set to log on with my user account which is in the Windows administrator group. Backups on both machines fail with the message "Couldn't create the destination directory "\nas1\backups\foo\bar\": The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect". I have tried setting the NAS's share to allow anonymous read/write access but it made no difference. Although I want the backups to run unattended in the middle of the night, I have tested them by running them manually while I'm logged in but no luck. Before starting that, I make sure that I can browse to the NAS with Explorer to ensure that any authentication session with Windows and the NAS has not expired. Still no luck. I have tried creating that destination directory both on the NAS before the backup and deleting it so the backup job could create it with the client's credentials but no luck. The usual answer in the Cobian support forums is that there is a permission problem. I agree. But at this point, what can I do to diagnose this further?

  I'm trying to image a SATA laptop hard drive, using DriveImageXML, that is attached to my computer via a USB adapter. I'm running Win7 Ultimate 64 bit. DriveXML is returning: Could not initialize Windows Volume Shadow Service (VSS). ERROR C:\Program Files (x86)\Runtime Software\Drivelmage XML\vss64.exe failed to start. ERROR TIMEOUT Make sure VSSVC.EXE is running in your task manager. Click Help for more information. VSSVC.EXE is running in Task Manager, as is VSS64.exe. Looking at the FAQ on the Runtime webpage this turned up: Please verify in Settings-Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Services that the following services are enabled: MS Software Shadow Copy Provider Volume Shadow Copy Also make sure you are able to stop and start these services. Possible reasons for VSS failures: For VSS to work, at least one volume in your computer must be NTFS. If you use only FAT drives, VSS will not function. The required NTFS volume does not need to be identical with the volume you want to image. You should make sure that VSSVC.EXE is running in your task manager. If the problems persist, registering "oleaut.dll" and "oleaut32.dll" using "regsvr32" might help. Both of those services are running and can be started and stopped without issue. Using "regsvr32" to register ""oleaut32.dll" returns successful, but "oleaut.dll" returns: The module "oleaut.dll" failed to load. Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .DLL files. The specified module could not be found. Some other information that might be relevant. Browsing to the drive is successful, but accessing certain folders returns an "access" error. Windows runs a permissions adder that adds the current user profile to the NFTS permissions. Could this be the cause of the issue? DriveImage XML is running as Administrator. Thoughts?

• Windows 7 wont boot from any boot loader except for 'Windows Boot Manager' after partition resize

  I have a triple boot system on a single SSD. OSX, Windows 7, and Ubuntu. I use Chimera (basically another version of Chameleon) as my boot loader. Usually I can boot all 3 without any issue, but after using GParted to make my Ubuntu partition 2 Gigs larger, Windows 7 throws me an error when trying to boot to it from either Chimera or Grub. The error is consistently: 0xc000000e "cant find \Boot\BCD" (slightly paraphrased). However, I can still get into Windows by selecting "Windows Boot Manager" from the boot options in my bios. I've already tried several known fixes for similar issues, including bootrec /rebuildbcd (and variations), and BootRec.exe/fixMBR + BootRec.exe/fixBoot. Ive also tried Chkdsk. At best this has made it so Windows 7 boots on it's own by default (making me have to reinstall Chimera and change back my boot settings in the bios). At worst this made it so Windows wont boot period. Now I'm back full circle where I started. A detail that might be useful is that bootrec /rebuildbcd says that the number of found Windows installations is 0. How do I get it back so I can boot Win7 through another boot loader so I don't have to manually select it in the bios? Preferably without a reinstall.
