  • System.Threading.Timer Doesn't Trigger my TimerCallBack Delegate

    - by Tom Kong
    Hi, I am writing my first Windows Service using C# and I am having some trouble with my Timer class. When the service is started, it runs as expected but the code will not execute again (I want it to run every minute) Please take a quick look at the attached source and let me know if you see any obvious mistakes! • C# Object Problem - Can't Solve It

    - by user612041
    I'm getting the error 'Object reference not set to an instance of an object'. I've tried looking at similar problems but genuinely cannot see what the problem is with my program. The line of code that I am having an error with is: labelQuestion.Text = table.Rows[0]["Question"].ToString(); Here is my code in its entirety: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.ComponentModel; using System.Data; using System.Drawing; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.Windows.Forms; using System.Data.OleDb; using System.Data.Sql; using System.Data.SqlClient; namespace Quiz_Test { public partial class Form1 : Form { public Form1() { InitializeComponent(); } String chosenAnswer, correctAnswer; DataTable table; private void Form1_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { //declare connection string using windows security string cnString = "Provider=Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0;Data Source=C:\\Users\\Hannah\\Desktop\\QuizQuestions.accdb"; //declare Connection, command and other related objects OleDbConnection conGet = new OleDbConnection(cnString); OleDbCommand cmdGet = new OleDbCommand(); //try //{ //open connection conGet.Open(); //String correctAnswer; cmdGet.CommandType = CommandType.Text; cmdGet.Connection = conGet; cmdGet.CommandText = "SELECT * FROM QuizQuestions ORDER BY rnd()"; OleDbDataReader reader = cmdGet.ExecuteReader(); reader.Read(); labelQuestion.Text = table.Rows[0]["Question"].ToString(); radioButton1.Text = table.Rows[0]["Answer 1"].ToString(); radioButton2.Text = table.Rows[0]["Answer 2"].ToString(); radioButton3.Text = table.Rows[0]["Answer 3"].ToString(); radioButton4.Text = table.Rows[0]["Answer 4"].ToString(); correctAnswer = table.Rows[0]["Correct Answer"].ToString(); ; conGet.Close(); } private void btnSelect_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { String cnString = "Provider=Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0;Data Source=C:\\Users\\Hannah\\Desktop\\QuizQuestions.accdb"; //declare Connection, command and other related objects OleDbConnection conGet = new OleDbConnection(cnString); OleDbCommand cmdGet = new OleDbCommand(); //try { //open connection conGet.Open(); cmdGet.CommandType = CommandType.Text; cmdGet.Connection = conGet; cmdGet.CommandText = "SELECT * FROM QuizQuestions ORDER BY rnd()"; // select all columns in all rows OleDbDataReader reader = cmdGet.ExecuteReader(); reader.Read(); if (radioButton1.Checked) { chosenAnswer = reader["Answer 1"].ToString(); } else if (radioButton2.Checked) { chosenAnswer = reader["Answer 2"].ToString(); } else if (radioButton3.Checked) { chosenAnswer = reader["Answer 3"].ToString(); } else { chosenAnswer = reader["Answer 4"].ToString(); } if (chosenAnswer == reader["Correct Answer"].ToString()) { //chosenCorrectly++; MessageBox.Show("You have got this answer correct"); //label2.Text = "You have got " + chosenCorrectly + " answers correct"; } else { MessageBox.Show("That is not the correct answer"); } } } } } I realise the problem isn't too big but I can't see how my declaration timings are wrong

  • How to search Multiple Sites using Lucene Search engine API?

    - by Wael Salman
    Hope that someone can help me as soon as possible :-) I would like to know how can we search Multiple Sites using Lucene??! (All sites are in one index). I have succeeded to search one website , and to index multiple sites, however I am not able to search all websites. Consider this method that I have: private void PerformSearch() { DateTime start = DateTime.Now; //Create the Searcher object string strIndexDir = Server.MapPath("index") + @"\" + mstrURL; IndexSearcher objSearcher = new IndexSearcher(strIndexDir); //Parse the query, "text" is the default field to search Query objQuery = QueryParser.Parse(mstrQuery, "text", new StandardAnalyzer()); //Create the result DataTable mobjDTResults.Columns.Add("title", typeof(string)); mobjDTResults.Columns.Add("path", typeof(string)); mobjDTResults.Columns.Add("score", typeof(string)); mobjDTResults.Columns.Add("sample", typeof(string)); mobjDTResults.Columns.Add("explain", typeof(string)); //Perform search and get hit count Hits objHits = objSearcher.Search(objQuery); mintTotal = objHits.Length(); //Create Highlighter QueryHighlightExtractor highlighter = new QueryHighlightExtractor(objQuery, new StandardAnalyzer(), "<B>", "</B>"); //Initialize "Start At" variable mintStartAt = GetStartAt(); //How many items we should show? int intResultsCt = GetSmallerOf(mintTotal, mintMaxResults + mintStartAt); //Loop through results and display for (int intCt = mintStartAt; intCt < intResultsCt; intCt++) { //Get the document from resuls index Document doc = objHits.Doc(intCt); //Get the document's ID and set the cache location string strID = doc.Get("id"); string strLocation = ""; if (mstrURL.Substring(0,3) == "www") strLocation = Server.MapPath("cache") + @"\" + mstrURL + @"\" + strID + ".htm"; else strLocation = doc.Get("path") + doc.Get("filename"); //Load the HTML page from cache string strPlainText; using (StreamReader sr = new StreamReader(strLocation, System.Text.Encoding.Default)) { strPlainText = ParseHTML(sr.ReadToEnd()); } //Add result to results datagrid DataRow row = mobjDTResults.NewRow(); if (mstrURL.Substring(0,3) == "www") row["title"] = doc.Get("title"); else row["title"] = doc.Get("filename"); row["path"] = doc.Get("path"); row["score"] = String.Format("{0:f}", (objHits.Score(intCt) * 100)) + "%"; row["sample"] = highlighter.GetBestFragments(strPlainText, 200, 2, "..."); Explanation objExplain = objSearcher.Explain(objQuery, intCt); row["explain"] = objExplain.ToHtml(); mobjDTResults.Rows.Add(row); } objSearcher.Close(); //Finalize results information mTsDuration = DateTime.Now - start; mintFromItem = mintStartAt + 1; mintToItem = GetSmallerOf(mintStartAt + mintMaxResults, mintTotal); } as you can see that I use the site URL 'mstrURL' when I create the search object string strIndexDir = Server.MapPath("index") + @"\" + mstrURL; How can I do the same when I want to search multiple sites?? Actually I am using the code from http://www.keylimetie.com/blog/2005/8/4/lucenenet/

  • Serious problem with WCF, GridViews, Callbacks and ExecuteReaders exceptions.

    - by barjed
    Hi, I have this problem that is driving me insane. I have a project to deliver before Thursday. Basically an app consiting of three components that communicate with each other in WCF. I have one console app and one Windows Forms app. The console app is a server that's connected to the database. You can add records to it via the Windows Forms client that connectes with the server through the WCF. The code for the client: namespace BankAdministratorClient { [CallbackBehavior(ConcurrencyMode = ConcurrencyMode.Single, UseSynchronizationContext = false)] public partial class Form1 : Form, BankServverReference.BankServerCallback { private BankServverReference.BankServerClient server = null; private SynchronizationContext interfaceContext = null; public Form1() { InitializeComponent(); interfaceContext = SynchronizationContext.Current; server = new BankServverReference.BankServerClient(new InstanceContext(this), "TcpBinding"); server.Open(); server.Subscribe(); refreshGridView(""); } public void refreshClients(string s) { SendOrPostCallback callback = delegate(object state) { refreshGridView(s); }; interfaceContext.Post(callback, s); } public void refreshGridView(string s) { try { userGrid.DataSource = server.refreshDatabaseConnection().Tables[0]; } catch (Exception ex) { MessageBox.Show(ex.ToString()); } } private void buttonAdd_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { server.addNewAccount(Int32.Parse(inputPIN.Text), Int32.Parse(inputBalance.Text)); } private void Form1_FormClosing(object sender, FormClosingEventArgs e) { try { server.Unsubscribe(); server.Close(); }catch{} } } } The code for the server: namespace SSRfinal_tcp { class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { Console.WriteLine(MessageHandler.dataStamp("The server is starting up")); using (ServiceHost server = new ServiceHost(typeof(BankServer))) { server.Open(); Console.WriteLine(MessageHandler.dataStamp("The server is running")); Console.ReadKey(); } } } [ServiceBehavior(ConcurrencyMode = ConcurrencyMode.Single, InstanceContextMode = InstanceContextMode.PerCall, IncludeExceptionDetailInFaults = true)] public class BankServer : IBankServerService { private static DatabaseLINQConnectionDataContext database = new DatabaseLINQConnectionDataContext(); private static List<IBankServerServiceCallback> subscribers = new List<IBankServerServiceCallback>(); public void Subscribe() { try { IBankServerServiceCallback callback = OperationContext.Current.GetCallbackChannel<IBankServerServiceCallback>(); if (!subscribers.Contains(callback)) subscribers.Add(callback); Console.WriteLine(MessageHandler.dataStamp("A new Bank Administrator has connected")); } catch { Console.WriteLine(MessageHandler.dataStamp("A Bank Administrator has failed to connect")); } } public void Unsubscribe() { try { IBankServerServiceCallback callback = OperationContext.Current.GetCallbackChannel<IBankServerServiceCallback>(); if (subscribers.Contains(callback)) subscribers.Remove(callback); Console.WriteLine(MessageHandler.dataStamp("A Bank Administrator has been signed out from the connection list")); } catch { Console.WriteLine(MessageHandler.dataStamp("A Bank Administrator has failed to sign out from the connection list")); } } public DataSet refreshDatabaseConnection() { var q = from a in database.GetTable<Account>() select a; DataTable dt = q.toTable(rec => new object[] { q }); DataSet data = new DataSet(); data.Tables.Add(dt); Console.WriteLine(MessageHandler.dataStamp("A Bank Administrator has requested a database data listing refresh")); return data; } public void addNewAccount(int pin, int balance) { Account acc = new Account() { PIN = pin, Balance = balance, IsApproved = false }; database.Accounts.InsertOnSubmit(acc); database.SubmitChanges(); database.addNewAccount(pin, balance, false); subscribers.ForEach(delegate(IBankServerServiceCallback callback) { callback.refreshClients("New operation is pending approval."); }); } } } This is really simple and it works for a single window. However, when you open multiple instances of the client window and try to add a new record, the windows that is performing the insert operation crashes with the ExecuteReader error and the " requires an open and available connection. the connection's current state is connecting" bla bla stuff. I have no idea what's going on. Please advise.

  • IE7 doesn't render part of page until the window resizes or switch between tabs

    - by BlackMael
    I have a problem with IE7. I have a fixed layout for keeping the header and a sidepanel fixed on a page leaving only the "main content" area switch can happily scroll it's content. This layout works perfectly fine for IE6 and IE8, but sometimes one page may start "hiding" the content that should be showing in the "main content" area. The page finishes loading just fine. For a split second IE7 will render the main content just fine and then it will immediately hide it from view.. somewhere.. It would also seem that it only experiences this problem when there is enough content to force the "main content" area to scroll. By resizing the window or switching to another open tab and back again will cause IE7 to show the page as it was intended. Note the same problem does occur with IE8 in compatibility mode, but the page is rendered correctly in IE8 mode. If need be I can attach the basic CSS styling I use, but I first want to see if this is a known issue with IE7. Does IE7 have issues with positioned layout and overflow scrolling that is sometimes likes to forgot to finish rendering the page correctly until some window redraw event forces to finish rendering? Please remember, this exact same layout is used across multiple pages in the site as it is set up in a master page. It is just (in this case) one page that is experiencing this problem. Other pages with the exact same layout do render correctly. Even if the main content is full enough to also scroll. UPDATE: A related question which doesn't have an answer at this point. LATE UPDATE: Adding example masterpage and css Please note this same layout is the same for all the pages in the application. My problem with IE7 only occurs on one such page. All other pages have happily render correctly in IE7. Just one page, using the exact same layout, has issues where it sometimes hides the content in the "work-space" div. The master page <%@ Master Language="VB" CodeFile="MasterPage.master.vb" Inherits="shared_templates_MasterPage" %> <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head runat="server"> <title></title> <link rel="Stylesheet" type="text/css" href="~/common/yui/2.7.0/build/reset-fonts/reset-fonts.css" runat="server" /> <link rel="Stylesheet" type="text/css" href="~/shared/css/layout.css" runat="server" /> <asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="head" runat="server" /> </head> <body> <form id="form1" runat="server"> <asp:ScriptManager ID="ScriptManager1" runat="server" /> <div id="app-header"> </div> <div id="side-panel"> </div> <div id="work-space"> <asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="WorkSpaceContentPlaceHolder" runat="server" /> </div> <div id="status-bar"> <asp:ContentPlaceHolder ID="StatusBarContentPlaceHolder" runat="server" /> </div> </form> </body> </html> The layout.css html { overflow: hidden; } body { overflow: hidden; padding: 0; margin: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; background-color: white; } body, table, td, th, select, textarea, input { font-family: Tahoma, Arial, Sans-Serif; font-size: 9pt; } p { padding-left: 1em; margin-bottom: 1em; } #app-header { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 80px; background-color: #dcdcdc; border-bottom: solid 4px #000; } #side-panel { position: absolute; top: 84px; left: 0px; bottom: 0px; overflow: auto; padding: 0; margin: 0; width: 227px; background-color: #AABCCA; border-right: solid 1px black; background-repeat: repeat-x; padding-top: 5px; } #work-space { position: absolute; top: 84px; left: 232px; right: 0px; padding: 0; margin: 0; bottom: 22px; overflow: auto; background-color: White; } #status-bar { position: absolute; height: 20px; left: 228px; right: 0px; padding: 0; margin: 0; bottom: 0px; border-top: solid 1px #c0c0c0; background-color: #f0f0f0; } The Default.aspx <%@ Page Title="Test" Language="VB" MasterPageFile="~/shared/templates/MasterPage.master" AutoEventWireup="false" CodeFile="Default.aspx.vb" Inherits="_Default" %> <asp:Content ID="WorkspaceContent" ContentPlaceHolderID="WorkSpaceContentPlaceHolder" Runat="Server"> Workspace <asp:ListView ID="DemoListView" runat="server" DataSourceID="DemoObjectDataSource" ItemPlaceholderID="DemoPlaceHolder"> <LayoutTemplate> <table style="border: 1px solid #a0a0a0; width: 600px"> <colgroup> <col width="80" /> <col /> <col width="80" /> <col width="120" /> </colgroup> <tbody> <asp:PlaceHolder ID="DemoPlaceHolder" runat="server" /> </tbody> </table> </LayoutTemplate> <ItemTemplate> <tr> <th><%#Eval("ID")%></th> <td><%#Eval("Name")%></td> <td><%#Eval("Size")%></td> <td><%#Eval("CreatedOn", "{0:yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss}")%></td> </tr> </ItemTemplate> </asp:ListView> <asp:ObjectDataSource ID="DemoObjectDataSource" runat="server" OldValuesParameterFormatString="original_{0}" SelectMethod="GetData" TypeName="DemoLogic"> <SelectParameters> <asp:Parameter Name="path" Type="String" /> </SelectParameters> </asp:ObjectDataSource> </asp:Content> <asp:Content ID="StatusContent" ContentPlaceHolderID="StatusBarContentPlaceHolder" Runat="Server"> Ready OK. </asp:Content>

  • Get XML from Server for Use on Windows Phone

    - by psheriff
    When working with mobile devices you always need to take into account bandwidth usage and power consumption. If you are constantly connecting to a server to retrieve data for an input screen, then you might think about moving some of that data down to the phone and cache the data on the phone. An example would be a static list of US State Codes that you are asking the user to select from. Since this is data that does not change very often, this is one set of data that would be great to cache on the phone. Since the Windows Phone does not have an embedded database, you can just use an XML string stored in Isolated Storage. Of course, then you need to figure out how to get data down to the phone. You can either ship it with the application, or connect and retrieve the data from your server one time and thereafter cache it and retrieve it from the cache. In this blog post you will see how to create a WCF service to retrieve data from a Product table in a database and send that data as XML to the phone and store it in Isolated Storage. You will then read that data from Isolated Storage using LINQ to XML and display it in a ListBox. Step 1: Create a Windows Phone Application The first step is to create a Windows Phone application called WP_GetXmlFromDataSet (or whatever you want to call it). On the MainPage.xaml add the following XAML within the “ContentPanel” grid: <StackPanel>  <Button Name="btnGetXml"          Content="Get XML"          Click="btnGetXml_Click" />  <Button Name="btnRead"          Content="Read XML"          IsEnabled="False"          Click="btnRead_Click" />  <ListBox Name="lstData"            Height="430"            ItemsSource="{Binding}"            DisplayMemberPath="ProductName" /></StackPanel> Now it is time to create the WCF Service Application that you will call to get the XML from a table in a SQL Server database. Step 2: Create a WCF Service Application Add a new project to your solution called WP_GetXmlFromDataSet.Services. Delete the IService1.* and Service1.* files and the App_Data folder, as you don’t generally need these items. Add a new WCF Service class called ProductService. In the IProductService class modify the void DoWork() method with the following code: [OperationContract]string GetProductXml(); Open the code behind in the ProductService.svc and create the GetProductXml() method. This method (shown below) will connect up to a database and retrieve data from a Product table. public string GetProductXml(){  string ret = string.Empty;  string sql = string.Empty;  SqlDataAdapter da;  DataSet ds = new DataSet();   sql = "SELECT ProductId, ProductName,";  sql += " IntroductionDate, Price";  sql += " FROM Product";   da = new SqlDataAdapter(sql,    ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["Sandbox"].ConnectionString);   da.Fill(ds);   // Create Attribute based XML  foreach (DataColumn col in ds.Tables[0].Columns)  {    col.ColumnMapping = MappingType.Attribute;  }   ds.DataSetName = "Products";  ds.Tables[0].TableName = "Product";  ret = ds.GetXml();   return ret;} After retrieving the data from the Product table using a DataSet, you will want to set each column’s ColumnMapping property to Attribute. Using attribute based XML will make the data transferred across the wire a little smaller. You then set the DataSetName property to the top-level element name you want to assign to the XML. You then set the TableName property on the DataTable to the name you want each element to be in your XML. The last thing you need to do is to call the GetXml() method on the DataSet object which will return an XML string of the data in your DataSet object. This is the value that you will return from the service call. The XML that is returned from the above call looks like the following: <Products>  <Product ProductId="1"           ProductName="PDSA .NET Productivity Framework"           IntroductionDate="9/3/2010"           Price="5000" />  <Product ProductId="3"           ProductName="Haystack Code Generator for .NET"           IntroductionDate="7/1/2010"           Price="599.00" />  ...  ...  ... </Products> The GetProductXml() method uses a connection string from the Web.Config file, so add a <connectionStrings> element to the Web.Config file in your WCF Service application. Modify the settings shown below as needed for your server and database name. <connectionStrings>  <add name="Sandbox"        connectionString="Server=Localhost;Database=Sandbox;                         Integrated Security=Yes"/></connectionStrings> The Product Table You will need a Product table that you can read data from. I used the following structure for my product table. Add any data you want to this table after you create it in your database. CREATE TABLE Product(  ProductId int PRIMARY KEY IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,  ProductName varchar(50) NOT NULL,  IntroductionDate datetime NULL,  Price money NULL) Step 3: Connect to WCF Service from Windows Phone Application Back in your Windows Phone application you will now need to add a Service Reference to the WCF Service application you just created. Right-mouse click on the Windows Phone Project and choose Add Service Reference… from the context menu. Click on the Discover button. In the Namespace text box enter “ProductServiceRefrence”, then click the OK button. If you entered everything correctly, Visual Studio will generate some code that allows you to connect to your Product service. On the MainPage.xaml designer window double click on the Get XML button to generate the Click event procedure for this button. In the Click event procedure make a call to a GetXmlFromServer() method. This method will also need a “Completed” event procedure to be written since all communication with a WCF Service from Windows Phone must be asynchronous.  Write these two methods as follows: private const string KEY_NAME = "ProductData"; private void GetXmlFromServer(){  ProductServiceClient client = new ProductServiceClient();   client.GetProductXmlCompleted += new     EventHandler<GetProductXmlCompletedEventArgs>      (client_GetProductXmlCompleted);   client.GetProductXmlAsync();  client.CloseAsync();} void client_GetProductXmlCompleted(object sender,                                   GetProductXmlCompletedEventArgs e){  // Store XML data in Isolated Storage  IsolatedStorageSettings.ApplicationSettings[KEY_NAME] = e.Result;   btnRead.IsEnabled = true;} As you can see, this is a fairly standard call to a WCF Service. In the Completed event you get the Result from the event argument, which is the XML, and store it into Isolated Storage using the IsolatedStorageSettings.ApplicationSettings class. Notice the constant that I added to specify the name of the key. You will use this constant later to read the data from Isolated Storage. Step 4: Create a Product Class Even though you stored XML data into Isolated Storage when you read that data out you will want to convert each element in the XML file into an actual Product object. This means that you need to create a Product class in your Windows Phone application. Add a Product class to your project that looks like the code below: public class Product{  public string ProductName{ get; set; }  public int ProductId{ get; set; }  public DateTime IntroductionDate{ get; set; }  public decimal Price{ get; set; }} Step 5: Read Settings from Isolated Storage Now that you have the XML data stored in Isolated Storage, it is time to use it. Go back to the MainPage.xaml design view and double click on the Read XML button to generate the Click event procedure. From the Click event procedure call a method named ReadProductXml().Create this method as shown below: private void ReadProductXml(){  XElement xElem = null;   if (IsolatedStorageSettings.ApplicationSettings.Contains(KEY_NAME))  {    xElem = XElement.Parse(     IsolatedStorageSettings.ApplicationSettings[KEY_NAME].ToString());     // Create a list of Product objects    var products =         from prod in xElem.Descendants("Product")        orderby prod.Attribute("ProductName").Value        select new Product        {          ProductId = Convert.ToInt32(prod.Attribute("ProductId").Value),          ProductName = prod.Attribute("ProductName").Value,          IntroductionDate =             Convert.ToDateTime(prod.Attribute("IntroductionDate").Value),          Price = Convert.ToDecimal(prod.Attribute("Price").Value)        };     lstData.DataContext = products;  }} The ReadProductXml() method checks to make sure that the key name that you saved your XML as exists in Isolated Storage prior to trying to open it. If the key name exists, then you retrieve the value as a string. Use the XElement’s Parse method to convert the XML string to a XElement object. LINQ to XML is used to iterate over each element in the XElement object and create a new Product object from each attribute in your XML file. The LINQ to XML code also orders the XML data by the ProductName. After the LINQ to XML code runs you end up with an IEnumerable collection of Product objects in the variable named “products”. You assign this collection of product data to the DataContext of the ListBox you created in XAML. The DisplayMemberPath property of the ListBox is set to “ProductName” so it will now display the product name for each row in your products collection. Summary In this article you learned how to retrieve an XML string from a table in a database, return that string across a WCF Service and store it into Isolated Storage on your Windows Phone. You then used LINQ to XML to create a collection of Product objects from the data stored and display that data in a Windows Phone list box. This same technique can be used in Silverlight or WPF applications too. NOTE: You can download the complete sample code at my website. http://www.pdsa.com/downloads. • SQL Server 2005: Improving performance for thousands or Insert requests. logout-login time= 120ms.

    - by Rad
    Can somebody shed some lights on how SQL Server 2005 deals with may request issued by a client using ADO.NET 2.0. Below is the shortend output of SQL Trace. I can see that connection pooling is working (I believe there is only one connection being pooled). What is not clear to me is why we have so many sp_reset_connection calls i.e a series of: Audit Login, SQL:BatchStarting, RPC:Starting and Audit Logout for each loop in for loop below. I can see that there is constant switching between tempdb and master database which leads me to conclude that we lost the context when next connection is created by fetching it from the pool based on ConectionString argument. I can see that every 15ms I can get 100-200 login/logout per second (reported at the same time by Profiler). The after 15ms I have again a series fo 100-200 login/logout per second. I need clarification on how this might affect much complex insert queries in production environment. I use Enterprise Library 2006, the code is compiled with VS 2005 and it is a console application that parses a flat file with 10 of thousand of rows grouping parent-child rows, runs on an application server and runs 2 stored procedure on a remote SQL Server 2005 inserting a parent record, retrieves Identity value and using it calls the second stored procedure 1, 2 or multiple times (sometimes several thousands) inserting child records. The child table has close to 10 million records with 5-10 indexes some of them being covering non-clustered. There is a pretty complex Insert trigger that copies inserted detail record to an archive table. All in all I only have 7 inserts per second which means it can take 2-4 hours for 50 thousand records. When I run Profiler on the test server (that is almost equivalent with production server) I can see that there is about 120ms between Audit Logout and Audit Login trace entries which almost give me chance to insert about 8 records. So my question is if there is some way to improve inserting of records since the company loads 100 thousands of records and does daily planning and has SLA to fulfill client request coming as flat file orders and some big files 10 thousands have to be processed(imported quickly). 4 hours to import 60 thousands should be reduced to 30 minutes. I was thinking to use BatchSize of DataAdapter to send multiple stored procedure calls, SQL Bulk inserts to batch multiple inserts from DataReader or DataTable, SSIS fast load. But I don't know how to properly analyze re-indexing and stats population and maybe this has to take some time to finish. What is worse is that the company uses the biggest table for reporting and other online processing and indexes cannot be dropped. I manage transaction manually by setting a field to a value and do an transactional update changing that value to a new value that other applications are using to get committed rows. Please advise how to approach this problem. For now I am trying to have a staging tables with minimal logging in a separate database and no indexes and I will try to do batched (massive) parent child inserts. I believe Production DB has simple recovery model, but it could be full recovery. If DB user that is being used by my .NET console application has bulkadmin role does it mean its bulk inserts are minimally logged. I understand that when a table has clustered and many non-clustered indexes that inserts are still logged for each row. Connection pooling is working, but with many login/logouts. Why? for (int i = 1; i <= 10000; i++){ using (SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection("server=(local);database=master;integrated security=sspi;")) {conn.Open(); using (SqlCommand cmd = conn.CreateCommand()){ cmd.CommandText = "use tempdb"; cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();}}} SQL Server Profiler trace: Audit Login master 2010-01-13 23:18:45.337 1 - Nonpooled SQL:BatchStarting use tempdb master 2010-01-13 23:18:45.337 RPC:Starting exec sp_reset_conn tempdb 2010-01-13 23:18:45.337 Audit Logout tempdb 2010-01-13 23:18:45.337 2 - Pooled Audit Login -- network protocol master 2010-01-13 23:18:45.383 2 - Pooled SQL:BatchStarting use tempdb master 2010-01-13 23:18:45.383 RPC:Starting exec sp_reset_conn tempdb 2010-01-13 23:18:45.383 Audit Logout tempdb 2010-01-13 23:18:45.383 2 - Pooled Audit Login -- network protocol master 2010-01-13 23:18:45.383 2 - Pooled SQL:BatchStarting use tempdb master 2010-01-13 23:18:45.383 RPC:Starting exec sp_reset_conn tempdb 2010-01-13 23:18:45.383 Audit Logout tempdb 2010-01-13 23:18:45.383 2 - Pooled

    I have a gridview and, when a record is double-clicked, I want it to open up a new detail-view form for that particular record. As an example, I have created a Customer class: using System; using System.Data; using System.Configuration; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.ComponentModel; using System.Data.SqlClient; using System.Collections; namespace SyncTest { #region Customer Collection public class CustomerCollection : BindingListView<Customer> { public CustomerCollection() : base() { } public CustomerCollection(List<Customer> customers) : base(customers) { } public CustomerCollection(DataTable dt) { foreach (DataRow oRow in dt.Rows) { Customer c = new Customer(oRow); this.Add(c); } } } #endregion public class Customer : INotifyPropertyChanged, IEditableObject, IDataErrorInfo { private string _CustomerID; private string _CompanyName; private string _ContactName; private string _ContactTitle; private string _OldCustomerID; private string _OldCompanyName; private string _OldContactName; private string _OldContactTitle; private bool _Editing; private string _Error = string.Empty; private EntityStateEnum _EntityState; private Hashtable _PropErrors = new Hashtable(); public event PropertyChangedEventHandler PropertyChanged; private void FirePropertyChangeNotification(string propName) { if (PropertyChanged != null) { PropertyChanged(this, new PropertyChangedEventArgs(propName)); } } public Customer() { this.EntityState = EntityStateEnum.Unchanged; } public Customer(DataRow dr) { //Populates the business object item from a data row this.CustomerID = dr["CustomerID"].ToString(); this.CompanyName = dr["CompanyName"].ToString(); this.ContactName = dr["ContactName"].ToString(); this.ContactTitle = dr["ContactTitle"].ToString(); this.EntityState = EntityStateEnum.Unchanged; } public string CustomerID { get { return _CustomerID; } set { _CustomerID = value; FirePropertyChangeNotification("CustomerID"); } } public string CompanyName { get { return _CompanyName; } set { _CompanyName = value; FirePropertyChangeNotification("CompanyName"); } } public string ContactName { get { return _ContactName; } set { _ContactName = value; FirePropertyChangeNotification("ContactName"); } } public string ContactTitle { get { return _ContactTitle; } set { _ContactTitle = value; FirePropertyChangeNotification("ContactTitle"); } } public Boolean IsDirty { get { return ((this.EntityState != EntityStateEnum.Unchanged) || (this.EntityState != EntityStateEnum.Deleted)); } } public enum EntityStateEnum { Unchanged, Added, Deleted, Modified } void IEditableObject.BeginEdit() { if (!_Editing) { _OldCustomerID = _CustomerID; _OldCompanyName = _CompanyName; _OldContactName = _ContactName; _OldContactTitle = _ContactTitle; } this.EntityState = EntityStateEnum.Modified; _Editing = true; } void IEditableObject.CancelEdit() { if (_Editing) { _CustomerID = _OldCustomerID; _CompanyName = _OldCompanyName; _ContactName = _OldContactName; _ContactTitle = _OldContactTitle; } this.EntityState = EntityStateEnum.Unchanged; _Editing = false; } void IEditableObject.EndEdit() { _Editing = false; } public EntityStateEnum EntityState { get { return _EntityState; } set { _EntityState = value; } } string IDataErrorInfo.Error { get { return _Error; } } string IDataErrorInfo.this[string columnName] { get { return (string)_PropErrors[columnName]; } } private void DataStateChanged(EntityStateEnum dataState, string propertyName) { //Raise the event if (PropertyChanged != null && propertyName != null) { PropertyChanged(this, new PropertyChangedEventArgs(propertyName)); } //If the state is deleted, mark it as deleted if (dataState == EntityStateEnum.Deleted) { this.EntityState = dataState; } if (this.EntityState == EntityStateEnum.Unchanged) { this.EntityState = dataState; } } } } Here is my the code for the double-click event: private void customersDataGridView_CellDoubleClick(object sender, DataGridViewCellEventArgs e) { Customer oCustomer = (Customer)customersBindingSource.CurrencyManager.List[customersBindingSource.CurrencyManager.Position]; CustomerForm oForm = new CustomerForm(); oForm.NewCustomer = oCustomer; oForm.ShowDialog(this); oForm.Dispose(); oForm = null; } Unfortunately, when this code runs, I receive an InvalidCastException error stating "Unable to cast object to type 'System.Data.DataRowView' to type 'SyncTest.Customer'". Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • Asp.net Google Charts SSL handler for GeoMap

    - by Ian
    Hi All, I am trying to view Google charts in a site using SSL. Google Charts do not support SSL so if we use the standard charts, we get warning messages. My plan is to create a ASHX handler that is co9ntained in the secure site that will retrieve the content from Google and serve this to the page the user is viewing. Using VS 2008 SP1 and the included web server, my idea works perfectly for both Firefox and IE 8 & 9(Preview) and I am able to see my geomap displayed on my page as it should be. But my problem is when I publish to IIS7 the page using my handler to generate the geomap works in Firefox but not IE(every version). There are no errors anywhere or in any log files, but when i right click in IE in the area where the map should be displayed, I see the message in the context menu saying "movie not loaded" Below is the code from my handler and the aspx page. I have disabled compression in my web.config. Even in IE I am hitting all my break points and when I use the IE9 Developer tools, the web page is correctly generated with all the correct code, url's and references. If you have any better ways to accomplish this or how i can fix my problem, I will appreciate it. Thanks Ian Handler(ASHX) public void ProcessRequest(HttpContext context) { String url = "http://charts.apis.google.com/jsapi"; string query = context.Request.QueryString.ToString(); if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(query)) { url = query; } HttpWebRequest request = (HttpWebRequest)HttpWebRequest.Create(new Uri(HttpUtility.UrlDecode(url))); request.UserAgent = context.Request.UserAgent; WebResponse response = request.GetResponse(); string PageContent = string.Empty; StreamReader Reader; Stream webStream = response.GetResponseStream(); string contentType = response.ContentType; context.Response.BufferOutput = true; context.Response.ContentType = contentType; context.Response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.NoCache); context.Response.Cache.SetNoServerCaching(); context.Response.Cache.SetMaxAge(System.TimeSpan.Zero); string newUrl = IanLearning.Properties.Settings.Default.HandlerURL; //"https://localhost:444/googlesecurecharts.ashx?"; if (response.ContentType.Contains("javascript")) { Reader = new StreamReader(webStream); PageContent = Reader.ReadToEnd(); PageContent = PageContent.Replace("http://", newUrl + "http://"); PageContent = PageContent.Replace("charts.apis.google.com", newUrl + "charts.apis.google.com"); PageContent = PageContent.Replace(newUrl + "http://maps.google.com/maps/api/", "http://maps.google.com/maps/api/"); context.Response.Write(PageContent); } else { { byte[] bytes = ReadFully(webStream); context.Response.BinaryWrite(bytes); } } context.Response.Flush(); response.Close(); webStream.Close(); context.Response.End(); context.ApplicationInstance.CompleteRequest(); } ASPX Page <%@ Page Title="" Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/Site2.Master" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeBehind="googlechart.aspx.cs" Inherits="IanLearning.googlechart" %> <asp:Content ID="Content1" ContentPlaceHolderID="head" runat="server"> <script type='text/javascript' src='~/googlesecurecharts.ashx?'></script> <script type='text/javascript'> google.load('visualization', '1', { 'packages': ['geomap'] }); google.setOnLoadCallback(drawMap); var geomap; function drawMap() { var data = new google.visualization.DataTable(); data.addRows(6); data.addColumn('string', 'City'); data.addColumn('number', 'Sales'); data.setValue(0, 0, 'ZA'); data.setValue(0, 1, 200); data.setValue(1, 0, 'US'); data.setValue(1, 1, 300); data.setValue(2, 0, 'BR'); data.setValue(2, 1, 400); data.setValue(3, 0, 'CN'); data.setValue(3, 1, 500); data.setValue(4, 0, 'IN'); data.setValue(4, 1, 600); data.setValue(5, 0, 'ZW'); data.setValue(5, 1, 700); var options = {}; options['region'] = 'world'; options['dataMode'] = 'regions'; options['showZoomOut'] = false; var container = document.getElementById('map_canvas'); geomap = new google.visualization.GeoMap(container); google.visualization.events.addListener( geomap, 'regionClick', function(e) { drillDown(e['region']); }); geomap.draw(data, options); }; function drillDown(regionData) { alert(regionData); } </script> </asp:Content> <asp:Content ID="Content2" ContentPlaceHolderID="ContentPlaceHolder1" runat="server"> <div id='map_canvas'> </div> </asp:Content>

  • Architecture choice about representation of collections in Business Objects

    - by Rajarshi
    I have made certain choices in my architecture which I request the community to review and comment. I am breaking up the post in smaller sections to make it easier to understand the context and then suggest/comment. I am sorry that the post is long, but is required to explain the context. What am I building A typical business application where there are application users, security roles, business operation/action rights based on roles and several business modules like Stock Receive, Stock Transfer, Sale Order, Sale Invoice, Sale Return, Stock Audit etc. and several reports. The application is a WinForm application since it has a lot of rich and responsive UI requirements and has to operate in disconnected mode (with a local SQL Server), most of the time. What have I done I have built a framework - nothing to boast about, but just a set of libraries that serves the repetative requirements of my application, e.g. authentication, role based authorization, data access, validation, exception handling, logging, change status tracking, presentation model compliance and reasonable loose coupling between components. No, I have not written everything from scratch, you can say I have consolidated many things together like some concepts from CSLA, Martin Fowler for Presentation Model, blocks from Enterprise Library, Unity etc. to build a set of libraries that will help my developers be productive quickly without having to look up Google for many of the technical requirements. I have tried to keep the framework generic so that it can be used in typical business applications and also tried to follow some best practices that will support the same Business Objects to be used in an ASP.NET MVC environment also. My present architecture serves my objectives well, and have built several modules (on WinForm) without much trouble. The architecture also lent itself well to build some usable prototype on ASP.NET MVC with the same set of business objects, without changing a single line of code. My Dilemma I have used Custom Business Objects since that gives me a clearer OOP representation of the problem scope in my solution scope, and helps me visualize my entire solution as collection of objects with data and behavior rather than having a set of relational data (DataSet) and implement behaviours (business logic, validation) etc. separately. With rich databinding support in .NET 2.0 binding Custom Business Objects to UI was a breeze. Now while building my business objects, I am still in a dilemma about representation of collections in business objects. Currently I am using DataSets to represent collections while I have seen many suggestions to implement custom collections. For example, in my vision, a typical Sale Invoice Object will contain 'Sales Invoice Items' as a collection. Now theoritically, I can accept that the each 'Sales Invoice Item' should have its own behavior along with their data (ItemCode, Name, Qty, Price etc.) but typically managing of Sale Invoice Items in a Sale Invoice is handled by the Sale Invoice Object itself, e.g. adding/removing Items from collection. Additionally, we can also put business logic/rules for the Sales Invoice Items like "Qty should not be greater than the ordered qty", "Price should be max 10% above the price in Sale Order" etc. in the Sale Invoice object itself. With that kind of a vision, I felt that most business object child collections can be managed by the parent itself, including add/remove from collection as well and implementing business logic for the collection items, hence the collection items hold nothing but data. Additionally, typical collections are represented in UI in Grids, where ability to support DataBinding becomes very important for any collection. Implementing a custom collection, in that case would also mean, I have to implement robust DataBinding support as well, for the collection, which is of course time consuming. Now, considering child collection behaviors are implemented in the parent and the need for DataBinding of child collections, I chose DataSet to represent any child collection in my business objects. In the above example of Sale Invoice I will have 'Invoice Number', 'Date', 'Customer' etc. as attributes of the 'Sale Invoice' but 'InvoiceItems' as a DataSet. Of course, when I say DataSet, it is not a vanilla dataset but an extended DataSet that supports business rule validation and the same role based security model of my framework to allow/deny any business operation to rows/columns of the DataSet, automatically. This approach has allowed easier collection management and databinding in my business objects and my developers are able to deliver modules rapidly. Questions Do you feel that the approach is reasonable? Do you see any shortcomings of this approach? I am recently thinking of using 'Typed DataSets' as child collections, for easier representation in code, that will allow me to write 'currentInvoice.InvoiceItems' (for the DataTable) and 'invoiceItem.ProductCode' or 'invoiceItem.Qty', instead of 'drow["ProductCode"].ToString()' or '(int)drow["Qty"]' etc. Does this choice have any demerits? Thank you if you have read so far and a salute if you still have the Energy to answer.

  • Searching a set of data with multiple terms using Linq

    - by Cj Anderson
    I'm in the process of moving from ADO.NET to Linq. The application is a directory search program to look people up. The users are allowed to type the search criteria into a single textbox. They can separate each term with a space, or wrap a phrase in quotes such as "park place" to indicate that it is one term. Behind the scenes the data comes from a XML file that has about 90,000 records in it and is about 65 megs. I load the data into a DataTable and then use the .Select method with a SQL query to perform the searches. The query I pass is built from the search terms the user passed. I split the string from the textbox into an array using a regular expression that will split everything into a separate element that has a space in it. However if there are quotes around a phrase, that becomes it's own element in the array. I then end up with a single dimension array with x number of elements, which I iterate over to build a long query. I then build the search expression below: query = query & _ "((userid LIKE '" & tempstr & "%') OR " & _ "(nickname LIKE '" & tempstr & "%') OR " & _ "(lastname LIKE '" & tempstr & "%') OR " & _ "(firstname LIKE '" & tempstr & "%') OR " & _ "(department LIKE '" & tempstr & "%') OR " & _ "(telephoneNumber LIKE '" & tempstr & "%') OR " & _ "(email LIKE '" & tempstr & "%') OR " & _ "(Office LIKE '" & tempstr & "%'))" Each term will have a set of the above query. If there is more than one term, I put an AND in between, and build another query like above with the next term. I'm not sure how to do this in Linq. So far, I've got the XML file loading correctly. I'm able to search it with specific criteria, but I'm not sure how to best implement the search over multiple terms. 'this works but far too simple to get the job done Dim results = From c In m_DataSet...<Users> _ Where c.<userid>.Value = "XXXX" _ Select c The above code also doesn't use the LIKE operator either. So partial matches don't work. It looks like what I'd want to use is the .Startswith but that appears to be only in Linq2SQL. Any guidance would be appreciated. I'm new to Linq, so I might be missing a simple way to do this. The XML file looks like so: <?xml version="1.0" standalone="yes"?> <theusers> <Users> <userid>person1</userid> <nickname></nickname> <lastname></lastname> <firstname></firstname> <department></department> <telephoneNumber></telephoneNumber> <email></email> </Users> <Users> <userid>person2</userid> <nickname></nickname> <lastname></lastname> <firstname></firstname> <department></department> <telephoneNumber></telephoneNumber> <email></email> </Users>

  • Fastest way to move records from a oracle DB into MS sql server after processing

    - by user347748
    Hi.. Ok this is the scenario...I have a table in Oracle that acts like a queue... A VB.net program reads the queue and calls a stored proc in MS SQL Server that processes and then inserts the message into another SQL server table and then deletes the record from the oracle table. We use a datareader to read the records from Oracle and then call the stored proc for each of the records. The program seems to be a little slow. The stored procedure itself isnt slow. The SP by itself when called in a loop can process about 2000 records in 20 seconds. BUt when called from the .Net program, the execution time is about 5 records per second. • Object oriented n-tier design. Am I abstracting too much? Or not enough?

    - by max
    Hi guys, I'm building my first enterprise grade solution (at least I'm attempting to make it enterprise grade). I'm trying to follow best practice design patterns but am starting to worry that I might be going too far with abstraction. I'm trying to build my asp.net webforms (in C#) app as an n-tier application. I've created a Data Access Layer using an XSD strongly-typed dataset that interfaces with a SQL server backend. I access the DAL through some Business Layer Objects that I've created on a 1:1 basis to the datatables in the dataset (eg, a UsersBLL class for the Users datatable in the dataset). I'm doing checks inside the BLL to make sure that data passed to DAL is following the business rules of the application. That's all well and good. Where I'm getting stuck though is the point at which I connect the BLL to the presentation layer. For example, my UsersBLL class deals mostly with whole datatables, as it's interfacing with the DAL. Should I now create a separate "User" (Singular) class that maps out the properties of a single user, rather than multiple users? This way I don't have to do any searching through datatables in the presentation layer, as I could use the properties created in the User class. Or would it be better to somehow try to handle this inside the UsersBLL? Sorry if this sounds a little complicated... Below is the code from the UsersBLL: using System; using System.Data; using PedChallenge.DAL.PedDataSetTableAdapters; [System.ComponentModel.DataObject] public class UsersBLL { private UsersTableAdapter _UsersAdapter = null; protected UsersTableAdapter Adapter { get { if (_UsersAdapter == null) _UsersAdapter = new UsersTableAdapter(); return _UsersAdapter; } } [System.ComponentModel.DataObjectMethodAttribute (System.ComponentModel.DataObjectMethodType.Select, true)] public PedChallenge.DAL.PedDataSet.UsersDataTable GetUsers() { return Adapter.GetUsers(); } [System.ComponentModel.DataObjectMethodAttribute (System.ComponentModel.DataObjectMethodType.Select, false)] public PedChallenge.DAL.PedDataSet.UsersDataTable GetUserByUserID(int userID) { return Adapter.GetUserByUserID(userID); } [System.ComponentModel.DataObjectMethodAttribute (System.ComponentModel.DataObjectMethodType.Select, false)] public PedChallenge.DAL.PedDataSet.UsersDataTable GetUsersByTeamID(int teamID) { return Adapter.GetUsersByTeamID(teamID); } [System.ComponentModel.DataObjectMethodAttribute (System.ComponentModel.DataObjectMethodType.Select, false)] public PedChallenge.DAL.PedDataSet.UsersDataTable GetUsersByEmail(string Email) { return Adapter.GetUserByEmail(Email); } [System.ComponentModel.DataObjectMethodAttribute (System.ComponentModel.DataObjectMethodType.Insert, true)] public bool AddUser(int? teamID, string FirstName, string LastName, string Email, string Role, int LocationID) { // Create a new UsersRow instance PedChallenge.DAL.PedDataSet.UsersDataTable Users = new PedChallenge.DAL.PedDataSet.UsersDataTable(); PedChallenge.DAL.PedDataSet.UsersRow user = Users.NewUsersRow(); if (UserExists(Users, Email) == true) return false; if (teamID == null) user.SetTeamIDNull(); else user.TeamID = teamID.Value; user.FirstName = FirstName; user.LastName = LastName; user.Email = Email; user.Role = Role; user.LocationID = LocationID; // Add the new user Users.AddUsersRow(user); int rowsAffected = Adapter.Update(Users); // Return true if precisely one row was inserted, // otherwise false return rowsAffected == 1; } [System.ComponentModel.DataObjectMethodAttribute (System.ComponentModel.DataObjectMethodType.Update, true)] public bool UpdateUser(int userID, int? teamID, string FirstName, string LastName, string Email, string Role, int LocationID) { PedChallenge.DAL.PedDataSet.UsersDataTable Users = Adapter.GetUserByUserID(userID); if (Users.Count == 0) // no matching record found, return false return false; PedChallenge.DAL.PedDataSet.UsersRow user = Users[0]; if (teamID == null) user.SetTeamIDNull(); else user.TeamID = teamID.Value; user.FirstName = FirstName; user.LastName = LastName; user.Email = Email; user.Role = Role; user.LocationID = LocationID; // Update the product record int rowsAffected = Adapter.Update(user); // Return true if precisely one row was updated, // otherwise false return rowsAffected == 1; } [System.ComponentModel.DataObjectMethodAttribute (System.ComponentModel.DataObjectMethodType.Delete, true)] public bool DeleteUser(int userID) { int rowsAffected = Adapter.Delete(userID); // Return true if precisely one row was deleted, // otherwise false return rowsAffected == 1; } private bool UserExists(PedChallenge.DAL.PedDataSet.UsersDataTable users, string email) { // Check if user email already exists foreach (PedChallenge.DAL.PedDataSet.UsersRow userRow in users) { if (userRow.Email == email) return true; } return false; } } Some guidance in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!! • Referencing ASP.net textbox data in JavaScripts

    - by GoldenEarring
    I'm interested in making an interactive 3D pie chart using JavaScript and ASP.net controls for a webpage. Essentially, I want to make an interactive version of the chart here: https://google-developers.appspot.com/chart/interactive/docs/gallery/piechart#3D I want to have 5 ASP.net textboxes where the user enters data and then submits it, and the chart adjusts according to what the user enters. I understand using ASP.net controls with JS is probably not the most effective way to go about it, but I would really appreciate if someone could share how doing this would be possible. I really don't know where to begin. Thanks for any help! <%@ Page Language="C#" %> <!DOCTYPE html> <script runat="server"> void btn1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { double s = 0.0; double b = 0; double g = 0.0f; double c = 0.0f; double h = 0.0f; s = double.Parse(txtWork.Text); b = double.Parse(txtEat.Text); g = double.Parse(txtCommute.Text); c = double.Parse(txtWatchTV.Text); h = double.Parse(txtSleep.Text); double total = s + b + g + c + h; if (total != 24) { lblError.Text = "Warning!   • Microsoft Introduces WebMatrix

    - by Rick Strahl
    originally published in CoDe Magazine Editorial Microsoft recently released the first CTP of a new development environment called WebMatrix, which along with some of its supporting technologies are squarely aimed at making the Microsoft Web Platform more approachable for first-time developers and hobbyists. But in the process, it also provides some updated technologies that can make life easier for existing .NET developers. Let’s face it: ASP.NET development isn’t exactly trivial unless you already have a fair bit of familiarity with sophisticated development practices. Stick a non-developer in front of Visual Studio .NET or even the Visual Web Developer Express edition and it’s not likely that the person in front of the screen will be very productive or feel inspired. Yet other technologies like PHP and even classic ASP did provide the ability for non-developers and hobbyists to become reasonably proficient in creating basic web content quickly and efficiently. WebMatrix appears to be Microsoft’s attempt to bring back some of that simplicity with a number of technologies and tools. The key is to provide a friendly and fully self-contained development environment that provides all the tools needed to build an application in one place, as well as tools that allow publishing of content and databases easily to the web server. WebMatrix is made up of several components and technologies: IIS Developer Express IIS Developer Express is a new, self-contained development web server that is fully compatible with IIS 7.5 and based on the same codebase that IIS 7.5 uses. This new development server replaces the much less compatible Cassini web server that’s been used in Visual Studio and the Express editions. IIS Express addresses a few shortcomings of the Cassini server such as the inability to serve custom ISAPI extensions (i.e., things like PHP or ASP classic for example), as well as not supporting advanced authentication. IIS Developer Express provides most of the IIS 7.5 feature set providing much better compatibility between development and live deployment scenarios. SQL Server Compact 4.0 Database access is a key component for most web-driven applications, but on the Microsoft stack this has mostly meant you have to use SQL Server or SQL Server Express. SQL Server Compact is not new-it’s been around for a few years, but it’s been severely hobbled in the past by terrible tool support and the inability to support more than a single connection in Microsoft’s attempt to avoid losing SQL Server licensing. The new release of SQL Server Compact 4.0 supports multiple connections and you can run it in ASP.NET web applications simply by installing an assembly into the bin folder of the web application. In effect, you don’t have to install a special system configuration to run SQL Compact as it is a drop-in database engine: Copy the small assembly into your BIN folder (or from the GAC if installed fully), create a connection string against a local file-based database file, and then start firing SQL requests. Additionally WebMatrix includes nice tools to edit the database tables and files, along with tools to easily upsize (and hopefully downsize in the future) to full SQL Server. This is a big win, pending compatibility and performance limits. In my simple testing the data engine performed well enough for small data sets. This is not only useful for web applications, but also for desktop applications for which a fully installed SQL engine like SQL Server would be overkill. Having a local data store in those applications that can potentially be accessed by multiple users is a welcome feature. ASP.NET Razor View Engine What? Yet another native ASP.NET view engine? We already have Web Forms and various different flavors of using that view engine with Web Forms and MVC. Do we really need another? Microsoft thinks so, and Razor is an implementation of a lightweight, script-only view engine. Unlike the Web Forms view engine, Razor works only with inline code, snippets, and markup; therefore, it is more in line with current thinking of what a view engine should represent. There’s no support for a “page model” or any of the other Web Forms features of the full-page framework, but just a lightweight scripting engine that works with plain markup plus embedded expressions and code. The markup syntax for Razor is geared for minimal typing, plus some progressive detection of where a script block/expression starts and ends. This results in a much leaner syntax than the typical ASP.NET Web Forms alligator (<% %>) tags. Razor uses the @ sign plus standard C# (or Visual Basic) block syntax to delineate code snippets and expressions. Here’s a very simple example of what Razor markup looks like along with some comment annotations: <!DOCTYPE html> <html>     <head>         <title></title>     </head>     <body>     <h1>Razor Test</h1>          <!-- simple expressions -->     @DateTime.Now     <hr />     <!-- method expressions -->     @DateTime.Now.ToString("T")          <!-- code blocks -->     @{         List<string> names = new List<string>();         names.Add("Rick");         names.Add("Markus");         names.Add("Claudio");         names.Add("Kevin");     }          <!-- structured block statements -->     <ul>     @foreach(string name in names){             <li>@name</li>     }     </ul>           <!-- Conditional code -->        @if(true) {                        <!-- Literal Text embedding in code -->        <text>         true        </text>;    }    else    {        <!-- Literal Text embedding in code -->       <text>       false       </text>;    }    </body> </html> Like the Web Forms view engine, Razor parses pages into code, and then executes that run-time compiled code. Effectively a “page” becomes a code file with markup becoming literal text written into the Response stream, code snippets becoming raw code, and expressions being written out with Response.Write(). The code generated from Razor doesn’t look much different from similar Web Forms code that only uses script tags; so although the syntax may look different, the operational model is fairly similar to the Web Forms engine minus the overhead of the large Page object model. However, there are differences: -Razor pages are based on a new base class, Microsoft.WebPages.WebPage, which is hosted in the Microsoft.WebPages assembly that houses all the Razor engine parsing and processing logic. Browsing through the assembly (in the generated ASP.NET Temporary Files folder or GAC) will give you a good idea of the functionality that Razor provides. If you look closely, a lot of the feature set matches ASP.NET MVC’s view implementation as well as many of the helper classes found in MVC. It’s not hard to guess the motivation for this sort of view engine: For beginning developers the simple markup syntax is easier to work with, although you obviously still need to have some understanding of the .NET Framework in order to create dynamic content. The syntax is easier to read and grok and much shorter to type than ASP.NET alligator tags (<% %>) and also easier to understand aesthetically what’s happening in the markup code. Razor also is a better fit for Microsoft’s vision of ASP.NET MVC: It’s a new view engine without the baggage of Web Forms attached to it. The engine is more lightweight since it doesn’t carry all the features and object model of Web Forms with it and it can be instantiated directly outside of the HTTP environment, which has been rather tricky to do for the Web Forms view engine. Having a standalone script parser is a huge win for other applications as well – it makes it much easier to create script or meta driven output generators for many types of applications from code/screen generators, to simple form letters to data merging applications with user customizability. For me personally this is very useful side effect and who knows maybe Microsoft will actually standardize they’re scripting engines (die T4 die!) on this engine. Razor also better fits the “view-based” approach where the view is supposed to be mostly a visual representation that doesn’t hold much, if any, code. While you can still use code, the code you do write has to be self-contained. Overall I wouldn’t be surprised if Razor will become the new standard view engine for MVC in the future – and in fact there have been announcements recently that Razor will become the default script engine in ASP.NET MVC 3.0. Razor can also be used in existing Web Forms and MVC applications, although that’s not working currently unless you manually configure the script mappings and add the appropriate assemblies. It’s possible to do it, but it’s probably better to wait until Microsoft releases official support for Razor scripts in Visual Studio. Once that happens, you can simply drop .cshtml and .vbhtml pages into an existing ASP.NET project and they will work side by side with classic ASP.NET pages. WebMatrix Development Environment To tie all of these three technologies together, Microsoft is shipping WebMatrix with an integrated development environment. An integrated gallery manager makes it easy to download and load existing projects, and then extend them with custom functionality. It seems to be a prominent goal to provide community-oriented content that can act as a starting point, be it via a custom templates or a complete standard application. The IDE includes a project manager that works with a single project and provides an integrated IDE/editor for editing the .cshtml and .vbhtml pages. A run button allows you to quickly run pages in the project manager in a variety of browsers. There’s no debugging support for code at this time. Note that Razor pages don’t require explicit compilation, so making a change, saving, and then refreshing your page in the browser is all that’s needed to see changes while testing an application locally. It’s essentially using the auto-compiling Web Project that was introduced with .NET 2.0. All code is compiled during run time into dynamically created assemblies in the ASP.NET temp folder. WebMatrix also has PHP Editing support with syntax highlighting. You can load various PHP-based applications from the WebMatrix Web Gallery directly into the IDE. Most of the Web Gallery applications are ready to install and run without further configuration, with Wizards taking you through installation of tools, dependencies, and configuration of the database as needed. WebMatrix leverages the Web Platform installer to pull the pieces down from websites in a tight integration of tools that worked nicely for the four or five applications I tried this out on. Click a couple of check boxes and fill in a few simple configuration options and you end up with a running application that’s ready to be customized. Nice! You can easily deploy completed applications via WebDeploy (to an IIS server) or FTP directly from within the development environment. The deploy tool also can handle automatically uploading and installing the database and all related assemblies required, making deployment a simple one-click install step. Simplified Database Access The IDE contains a database editor that can edit SQL Compact and SQL Server databases. There is also a Database helper class that facilitates database access by providing easy-to-use, high-level query execution and iteration methods: @{       var db = Database.OpenFile("FirstApp.sdf");     string sql = "select * from customers where Id > @0"; } <ul> @foreach(var row in db.Query(sql,1)){         <li>@row.FirstName @row.LastName</li> } </ul> The query function takes a SQL statement plus any number of positional (@0,@1 etc.) SQL parameters by simple values. The result is returned as a collection of rows which in turn have a row object with dynamic properties for each of the columns giving easy (though untyped) access to each of the fields. Likewise Execute and ExecuteNonQuery allow execution of more complex queries using similar parameter passing schemes. Note these queries use string-based queries rather than LINQ or Entity Framework’s strongly typed LINQ queries. While this may seem like a step back, it’s also in line with the expectations of non .NET script developers who are quite used to writing and using SQL strings in code rather than using OR/M frameworks. The only question is why was something not included from the beginning in .NET and Microsoft made developers build custom implementations of these basic building blocks. The implementation looks a lot like a DataTable-style data access mechanism, but to be fair, this is a common approach in scripting languages. This type of syntax that uses simple, static, data object methods to perform simple data tasks with one line of code are common in scripting languages and are a good match for folks working in PHP/Python, etc. Seems like Microsoft has taken great advantage of .NET 4.0’s dynamic typing to provide this sort of interface for row iteration where each row has properties for each field. FWIW, all the examples demonstrate using local SQL Compact files - I was unable to get a SQL Server connection string to work with the Database class (the connection string wasn’t accepted). However, since the code in the page is still plain old .NET, you can easily use standard ADO.NET code or even LINQ or Entity Framework models that are created outside of WebMatrix in separate assemblies as required. The good the bad the obnoxious - It’s still .NET The beauty (or curse depending on how you look at it :)) of Razor and the compilation model is that, behind it all, it’s still .NET. Although the syntax may look foreign, it’s still all .NET behind the scenes. You can easily access existing tools, helpers, and utilities simply by adding them to the project as references or to the bin folder. Razor automatically recognizes any assembly reference from assemblies in the bin folder. In the default configuration, Microsoft provides a host of helper functions in a Microsoft.WebPages assembly (check it out in the ASP.NET temp folder for your application), which includes a host of HTML Helpers. If you’ve used ASP.NET MVC before, a lot of the helpers should look familiar. Documentation at the moment is sketchy-there’s a very rough API reference you can check out here: http://www.asp.net/webmatrix/tutorials/asp-net-web-pages-api-reference Who needs WebMatrix? Uhm… good Question Clearly Microsoft is trying hard to create an environment with WebMatrix that is easy to use for newbie developers. The goal seems to be simplicity in providing a minimal development environment and an easy-to-use script engine/language that makes it easy to get started with. There’s also some focus on community features that can be used as starting points, such as Web Gallery applications and templates. The community features in particular are very nice and something that would be nice to eventually see in Visual Studio as well. The question is whether this is too little too late. Developers who have been clamoring for a simpler development environment on the .NET stack have mostly left for other simpler platforms like PHP or Python which are catering to the down and dirty developer. Microsoft will be hard pressed to win those folks-and other hardcore PHP developers-back. Regardless of how much you dress up a script engine fronted by the .NET Framework, it’s still the .NET Framework and all the complexity that drives it. While .NET is a fine solution in its breadth and features once you get a basic handle on the core features, the bar of entry to being productive with the .NET Framework is still pretty high. The MVC style helpers Microsoft provides are a good step in the right direction, but I suspect it’s not enough to shield new developers from having to delve much deeper into the Framework to get even basic applications built. Razor and its helpers is trying to make .NET more accessible but the reality is that in order to do useful stuff that goes beyond the handful of simple helpers you still are going to have to write some C# or VB or other .NET code. If the target is a hobby/amateur/non-programmer the learning curve isn’t made any easier by WebMatrix it’s just been shifted a tad bit further along in your development endeavor when you run out of canned components that are supplied either by Microsoft or the community. The database helpers are interesting and actually I’ve heard a lot of discussion from various developers who’ve been resisting .NET for a really long time perking up at the prospect of easier data access in .NET than the ridiculous amount of code it takes to do even simple data access with raw ADO.NET. It seems sad that such a simple concept and implementation should trigger this sort of response (especially since it’s practically trivial to create helpers like these or pick them up from countless libraries available), but there it is. It also shows that there are plenty of developers out there who are more interested in ‘getting stuff done’ easily than necessarily following the latest and greatest practices which are overkill for many development scenarios. Sometimes it seems that all of .NET is focused on the big life changing issues of development, rather than the bread and butter scenarios that many developers are interested in to get their work accomplished. And that in the end may be WebMatrix’s main raison d'être: To bring some focus back at Microsoft that simpler and more high level solutions are actually needed to appeal to the non-high end developers as well as providing the necessary tools for the high end developers who want to follow the latest and greatest trends. The current version of WebMatrix hits many sweet spots, but it also feels like it has a long way to go before it really can be a tool that a beginning developer or an accomplished developer can feel comfortable with. Although there are some really good ideas in the environment (like the gallery for downloading apps and components) which would be a great addition for Visual Studio as well, the rest of the development environment just feels like crippleware with required functionality missing especially debugging and Intellisense, but also general editor support. It’s not clear whether these are because the product is still in an early alpha release or whether it’s simply designed that way to be a really limited development environment. While simple can be good, nobody wants to feel left out when it comes to necessary tool support and WebMatrix just has that left out feeling to it. If anything WebMatrix’s technology pieces (which are really independent of the WebMatrix product) are what are interesting to developers in general. The compact IIS implementation is a nice improvement for development scenarios and SQL Compact 4.0 seems to address a lot of concerns that people have had and have complained about for some time with previous SQL Compact implementations. By far the most interesting and useful technology though seems to be the Razor view engine for its light weight implementation and it’s decoupling from the ASP.NET/HTTP pipeline to provide a standalone scripting/view engine that is pluggable. The first winner of this is going to be ASP.NET MVC which can now have a cleaner view model that isn’t inconsistent due to the baggage of non-implemented WebForms features that don’t work in MVC. But I expect that Razor will end up in many other applications as a scripting and code generation engine eventually. Visual Studio integration for Razor is currently missing, but is promised for a later release. The ASP.NET MVC team has already mentioned that Razor will eventually become the default MVC view engine, which will guarantee continued growth and development of this tool along those lines. And the Razor engine and support tools actually inherit many of the features that MVC pioneered, so there’s some synergy flowing both ways between Razor and MVC. As an existing ASP.NET developer who’s already familiar with Visual Studio and ASP.NET development, the WebMatrix IDE doesn’t give you anything that you want. The tools provided are minimal and provide nothing that you can’t get in Visual Studio today, except the minimal Razor syntax highlighting, so there’s little need to take a step back. With Visual Studio integration coming later there’s little reason to look at WebMatrix for tooling. It’s good to see that Microsoft is giving some thought about the ease of use of .NET as a platform For so many years, we’ve been piling on more and more new features without trying to take a step back and see how complicated the development/configuration/deployment process has become. Sometimes it’s good to take a step - or several steps - back and take another look and realize just how far we’ve come. WebMatrix is one of those reminders and one that likely will result in some positive changes on the platform as a whole. © Rick Strahl, West Wind Technologies, 2005-2010Posted in ASP.NET   IIS7

  • How to fix a Sticky Footer that works, but after a browser window is resized, the footer overlaps.

    - by UXdesigner
    Good day, I've been trying to build a perfect footer who sticks at the bottom of the browser window after it's content. And I got help here @ Stack Overflow previously. But after a while, and doing a few tests, found out that after the browser window is resized, and then I scroll down , the footer overlaps...it is causing me a big headache right now and I'd like to fix this so I can move on. I'm going to post the display.css right here: @charset "utf-8"; body, html { margin: 0; padding: 0; text-align: center; position: relative; min-height:100%; /* needed for footer positioning*/ height:100%;
