• database encryption questions

  We are using Sybase SQL Anywhere 11. We need to encrypt some of our tables in our database. I followed the instruction and did it. We selected the "strong" option with encryptionKey and AES256_FIPS algorithm. But there are something I am not clear about them. It will require encryptonKey when we create the database, remove the database and start the database server but it will NOT require encryptionKey when we stop the database server and connect to the server to create tables and add data. Why there is NO encryptionKey asked when we connect to it or try to stop the server? I am doing something wrong? don't know how to test the encryption? I still can see all plain text in the encrypted tables when I use Sybase Central tool. If somebody knows the database user name and password, he/she can connect to the database and read the content without the encryptionKey. is this right?

  I am working on a design where I can have flexible attributes for users and I am confused how to continue the design of the schema. I made a table where I kept system needed information: Table name: users id username password Now, I wish to create a profile table and have one to one relation where all the other attributes in profile table such as email, first name, last name, etc. My question is: is there a way to add a third table in which profiles will be flexible? In other words, if my clients need to create a new attribute he/she won't need any customization to the code.

In My DataModel Entity Framework 4.0, I'm filling my User Model and filling User.Menu (Menu is Navigation Properties) with an existing Menu of my table Menu. I have to save User and Save each related menu item in UserMenu table. • jquery integrate form parameter in one object

  There are many forms in my page. I want to merge them in one object and submit them in one object. But I find serializeArray() or serialize() do not match my request, the serializeArray function will generate a array object and serialize is used by get model, it is not an object. is there a jquery or local function can merge them in one object. I have one solution but it is not perfect, loop the array object generated by serializeArray, use $.extend to merge them in one object. is there a better method? kindly help, thanks.

  Hello. I'm having a little problem with configuring the firewall on my server. I only want a specific range of IPs to be able to access specific ports. For example, I'm having alot of password attempts to some of my servers, so I want to make it more safe by only allowing incoming connections from a specific range of domain. Example: My IP is usually adsl-324-4.somecompany.com so I want to allow *.somecpompany.com to connect, as my IP is dynamic. That would get rid of alot of attempts to hack into my servers. But I have no idea how to mask a domain like that for the firewall. How could I for example allow all incoming connections from *.is? Thanks.

• How to manage reports/files distribution to different destinations in Unix?

  The reporting tools will generate a huge numbers of reports/files in the file system (a Unix directory). There's a list of destinations (email addresses and shared folders) where a different set of reports/files (can have overlap) are required to be distributed at each destinations. Would like to know if there's a way to efficiently manage this reports delivery using shell scripts so that the maintenance of the list of reports and destinations will not become a mess in future. It's quite an open ended question, the constraint however is that it should work within the boundaries of managing the reports in a Unix FS.

• Running the script for the 2-nd time, the messages are not retrieved from the mail server

  I read the mails from my gmail account with the code following below. import poplib pop_conn = poplib.POP3_SSL('pop.gmail.com') pop_conn.user('user') # result: '+OK send PASS' pop_conn.pass_('password') # result: '+OK Welcome.' print pop_conn.list()[1] pop_conn.quit() It shows me 1 message as expected. However, if I run this script for the second time, I get 0 messages as result. On the server the message is still there and unread. How can I get all the messages also running the script for the second time? For me it behaves as an email client that doesn't download the same mail twice. Is there some flag to force the program to download everything again? I use python 2.7.x on ubuntu 12.10

• jsjac openfire chat issue

  I am trying to use openFire + jsjac for my application as chat option. I have installed openfire in my local machine and it is running fine on http://127.0.0.1:4040/ and i have downloaded jsjac version 1-3-4. 1) when I run sampleClient.html file directly [URL: C:\tomcat\webapps\jsjac\examples\simpleclient.html] I am able to connect sampleClient with openFire. Select Http Binding http Base : http://127.0.0.1:7070/http-bind/ jabber server : 127.0.0.1 username : admin password : ** 2) But when I put jsjac folder in tomcat/webapps/ directory, I access sampleClient through http://127.0.0.1:8080/jsjac/examples/sampleClient.html, at that time using above setting (which i have used in step 1) it is giving error "Service unavailable". In step 1 when though I am connected with openFire, when I send a message it displays only "message received from admin@localhost", but it does not display the actual message.. I need your advice on these problems... Thanks.

  I already wrote a random generator which take arguments a and b, where a is minimun and b is maximum value, like this randomGenerator(int a, int b) What I want to do next is: Using a loop, then generate unique number from a to b. Example: I want to have 8 unique numbers, int a = 1; int b = 10; int value; If I do the loop, there is a high % that same number will appear more than once. Any idea how to do it?   Hi, We're about to launch a little twitter Christmas competition, and I've run into a little snag. To enter, people will need to post a tweet in the following format: @user blah, blah, blah #hashtag Currently, I have a form where they enter their answer (the blah, blah, blah) and a PHP script which encodes the entire statement and adds on the twitter url: http://www.twitter.com/home?status=%40user%20blah%2Cblah%2Cblah%20%23hashtag Then takes the user to twitter and puts the status in the update field. However, whilst the spaces (%20) are decoded fine the @ and # characters remain as %40 & %23 respectively, even when the tweet is posted. I cannot put the actual characters in the url as twitter mistakes this for a search. Is there any way to solve this? I'd like to do it without requiring username & password etc if possible. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

• Squid logs on mongodb

  Hi, I'm planning to log my squid instances to a mongodb, but the actual problem is that we have a huge traffic to be logged, every access authenticated with user/pass. Eventually we have to make some reports based on logs. I was thinking to insert the logs distributed by months and by users, so my collection will look like this: {month: 'april', users: [{user: 'loop0', logs: [{timestamp: 12345678.9, url: 'http://stackoverflow.com/question/ask', ... }]}] So if I want to generate my reports based on the month of april I just have to get the right month instead of looking in zillions of lines to fetch the lines that timestamp match between April, 1 and April, 30. Of course this type of insert will be slower than just insert the log line directly. So my question is: is there a best way to do this? Nowadays we have around 12 million lines of log by day.

• Rails: Modeling an optional relation in ActiveRecord

  I would like to map a relation between two Rails models, where one side can be optionnal. Let's me be more precise... I have two models: Profile that stores user profile information (name, age,...) and User model that stores user access to the application (email, password,...). To give you more information, User model is handled by Devise gem for signup/signin. Here is the scenario of my app: 1/ When a user register, a new row is created in User table and there is an equivalent in Profile table. This leads to the following script: class User < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :profile end 2/ A user can create it's profile without registering (kind of public profile with public information), so a row in Profile doesn't have necessarily a User row equivalent (here is the optional relation, the 0..1 relation in UML). Have I not written the dynamic key generator correctly?

  I have a UITexetField with "Secure" option enabled in InterfaceBuilder (used to enter a password). Then I try to read, what the user entered. (void)textFieldDidEndEditing:(UITextField *)textField{ NSString *txt = textField.text; int a = 0; } It works fine with iOS 5 but since I use it in iOS6, this method no longer works - neither in simulator, nor at the real device. It was called, but textField.text returns always an empty string. With other UITextFields, without "Secure" option, it works fine. Could somebody help me ?

• How do (or can I) hack a gem temporarily while looking for a bug?

  I have a gem installed in my home directory on a laptop (eg not THE server). I have installed ruby 1.9.1 and also some other gems, notably right_aws - which allows access to s3, etc with ruby. All works, except there is a bug when I do a query on SimpleDB, and the returned list of items includes an item with any two byte utf-8 character in its itemName(). So I look through the sources of the right_aws gem installed on my machine, and I can see some places where I would like to test a fix. If I edit the file, save changes, (needing a password), then restart the server (script/server), it ignores my changes. I am quite new at ruby - do you have to 'compile' or other similar move to get the source code changes made take effect? I can see the edited file is changed by viewing it in terminal, etc.

  I'm building simple Course Management App. I want Users to sign up for Course. Here's sign up model: class CourseMembers(models.Model): student = models.ForeignKey(Student) course = models.ForeignKey(Course) def __unicode__(self): return unicode(self.student) Student model is extended User model - I'd like to fill the form with request.user. In Course model most important is course_id, which i'm passing into view throught URL parameter (for example http://127.0.0.1:8000/courses/course/1/). What i want to achieve, is to generate 'invisible' (so user can't change the inserted data) form with just input, but containing request.user and course_id parameter.
