• Read-only file system

  The title might not be as descriptive as I would like it to be but couldn't come up with a better one. My server's file system went into Read-only. And I don't understand why it does so and how to solve it. I can SSH into the server and when trying to start apache2 for example I get the following : username@srv1:~$ sudo service apache2 start [sudo] password for username: sudo: unable to open /var/lib/sudo/username/1: Read-only file system * Starting web server apache2 (30)Read-only file system: apache2: could not open error log file /var/log/apache2/error.log. Unable to open logs Action 'start' failed. The Apache error log may have more information. When I try restarting the server I get : username@srv1:~$ sudo shutdown -r now [sudo] password for username: sudo: unable to open /var/lib/sudo/username/1: Read-only file system Once I restart it manually it just start up without any warning or message saying something is wrong. I hope somebody could point me into the right direction to resolve this issue. Thanks in advance!

• Recover lost NTFS partition on SSD

  Hello, About 2 month ago I upgraded my Dell Latitude E6500 laptop with a Corsair Force F120 SSD drive. Everything worked well until about a week or so back. I started the computer and was faced with a beep and a message saying "No boot sector on Internal HDD (IRRT). No bootable devices". Since I figured that the boot sector had somehow got corrupt I tried booting from the Windows 7 dvd in order to repair the boot sector. But the Windows 7 installation program only found a blank drive with 111GB of unallocated space. I panicked and brought the drive with me to work to let a colleague have a look at it. We made a disk image of the entire drive and ran the drive through Testdisk in Linux. Testdisk did not find any partitions. It appears that the drive has been completely erased... What has happened? What is causing this behavior on an SSD?

• Restrict iPhone messaging to corprate osx server messaging service

  I have not found much information about this. We have company owned iPhone and iPads. We would like our employees to be able to message but require all messaging traffic to go through our local mountain lion osx server (not setup yet). How would the phones and server need to be configured to accomplish this. Specifically is it possible to restrict the user from adding additional accounts? How about another app that would use the server? Do you know of any good documentation on setting up this service on osx server and iPhone? I am open to other solutions, opensource messaging servers.....

• Linux partitioning problem

  I am using cfdisk to repartition my hdd as from OS install I only got 1 big partition a swap. I wanted to resize the big partition to 1 GB /boot and use the rest of the space for an extended partition. After I do cfdisk, I recheck the partitions with fdisk -l and I get these: Disk /dev/sda: 320 GB, 320070320640 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda3 1 38455 308881755 f Extended LBA Warning: Partition 3 does not end on cylinder boundary. /dev/sda2 38455 38698 1951897 82 Linux swap /dev/sda1 * 38699 38913 311349654 83 Linux My problem is the Warning message, I think I know the cause, I think its because of sda1 Blocks size. How could that be soo big if Start and End interval is small?

• mappoint 2013 randomly crashes on import

  We are sending routes to Mappoint 2013 from our application using an access database. It seems to happen with Mappoint 2010 and 2011 also. It doesn't happen on all of our clients either and it happens randomly on those who it does happen. • Why does Ubuntu's Nautilus display a folder called "Examples" while the console displays "examples.desktop"

  These folders occur at /home/username. How does this name discrepancy arise? (Uppercase E versus lowercase e.) It seems to be a shortcut to /usr/share/example-content. How can I delete /usr/share/example-content/Ubuntu_Free_Culture_Showcase without using the command line? One possible answer is to make a privileged Nautilus using something like these SUSE instructions (link below). Unfortunately "gnomesu nautilus" gives me a "gnomesu: no such file" message and "sudo nautilus" does not do anything when added to the properties of the Launcher. • DFS share Access denied for some time after workstation is booted.

  I have 2 Win server 2008 servers acting as domain controllers and Dns servers doing DFS. All my workstations are windows xp sp3. I have a DFS share drive mapped at login via login script. After the pc is booted I get an access denied message when trying to access the mapped drive. If i go to the file share on one of the servers i can get to it fine. After about 10 minutes i can try to access the mapped drive again and it works fine. I am not sure if it is some delay happening in dfs name resolution or a gpo issue.

• Trouble with Windows 7

  Hi, I'm trying to virtualize an application for Windows 7 but am running into trouble: Application will run fine in Windows 7 if installed in the base. When it is virtualized, it will run on XP, but not on Windows 7. I have tried this in three ways: Captured on XP with ThinApp 4.0 Captured on XP with ThinApp 4.5 Captured on Windows 7 with ThinApp 4.5 Even when captured on Windows 7, it will not run on Windows 7 but will run on XP. When captured with a rival product, Altiris SVS, the virtualized app runs fine on Windows 7. Any idea's what could cause this behaviour? Looking at the trace file, you see that they are different right from the start when comparing Windows 7 and XP tracefiles. What could cause it to go in completely different directions? (And why does the tracefile on Windows 7 say: Operating System Unknown? Does everybody have that on Windows 7 even with 4.5?) The error message is: "Object variable or with block variable not set". • Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration.

  Hello, I am trying to install Windows Web Server 2008 x64 (have tried 32-bit, too) onto an IBM eServer 326m and am getting the following error message some time after the unpacking files section: Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration. Installation cannot proceed. I can repair the boot information using the Repair option in the WinPE bit of the setup, and it reboots into the Windows installation, so it has good boot data on the drive. Just to complicate things, the server does not have a DVD-ROM so I'm installing from HDD to HDD, both SATA, one an SSD. I've tried each drive in isolation, e.g. removing the SSD and installing from spindle onto itself, same error every time. Flashed IBM BIOS, too. Thanks for your help. Luke

  Hi, today I accidently changed one option of Teminal Services, I checked "Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication". After that, I can't connect to my server any more. The error says: The remote computer requires Network Level Authentication, which your computer does not support. But my client pcs(both home and at office) are running Windows 7, as far as I know, it shoud support NLA; And in About dialog of Remote Desktop Connection there says "Supports Network Level Authentication". My server is running Windows Server 2008, placed in IDC center; I could connect to it before I change the settings. All other sevices(like IIS, SQL Server) are running normally. For clients, I tried two PCs running Windows 7, and two virtual windows XP machine running in Virtual PC and Virtual Box, all of them gives the same error message. Is there a way I can make things right without go to IDC which is far away? Thanks.

  Hi I am trying to stream a video from my TorrentFlux-b4rt server. I tried multiple media players, none work. Only VLC was able to produce an error message: input can't be opened: VLC is unable to open the MRL 'mms://...:8080/'. Check the log for details. I have tried multiple computers on different networks and all have the same issue. I am using Windows 7 to play the videos, and the server is Torrentflux-b4rt 1.0-beta2 with ubuntu 9.10. Thank you.

• User Profile cannot be loaded - Windows 7

  After uninstalling an HP Vector Mouse driver, then rebooting, when Windows tries to auto log me in, i get an error message saying tyhe following: The User Profile Service failed the Login. User Profile cannot be loaded. Due to the fact that it is the only account on this PC, I cannot even go into another account. I rebooted the machine several times, before going into Safe Mode with Networking. For some reason, I cannot create a new account whilst in safe mode (I think it is to do with UAC, nothing with UAC is clickable). Thus, I am stuck. I cannot get into my account, nor can I create a new one to copy files over to. Any ideas? Thanks in advance! Ryan EDIT: System Restore was, for some reason turned off. Thus, I cannot restore to a working point.

• Kickstart installation: Unable to read package metadata

  I'm trying to install a CentOS OS with kickstart using HTTP as the installation source. The kickstart server and the installed server are both running on VMs on the same machine. after the anaconda system installer starts it fails with the following message: I tried installing two different versions of Centos(5.5 and 5.2), and they both pass a CDROM media test the manual installation provides. • Runas Windows Explorer in Windows 7

  Hi All, Having a strange issue with Windows Explorer on Windows 7 Professional. When I try to open it up under different user credentials, I get the following error message: Results are the same whether I try it from the context menu or by using runas /user:DOMAIN\User explorer.exe However, if I open up a command prompt (using runas.exe) the behavior is a bit different: typing in just explorer or explorer.exe results in the same error. typing in explorer C: or explorer /E,... doesn't run anything. I'm dropped right back to the prompt. explorer process doesn't start. Has anyone seen this behavior before? If so, how can I go about changing it. Thanks.

• vista server 2008 web edition cant change permissions

  hi there, Im used to using windows server 2003 but decided to get a Vista web edition for IIS7 and to run our MVC applications on. I have installed copSSH that i use for SFTP, and when i upload my files i am unable to change persmissions or take ownership or anything when logged in as an administrator. when i try to go to permissions i get: The permissions on uploads are incorrectly ordered, which may cause some entries to be ineffective. and all permissions are the grayed out. i have tried to use icacls to reset ownership and also tried to give myself full control through icacls however all attempts are met with a access is denied message and failed processing 669 files. all i wish to do is set up write and delete permissions on an upload folder for a CMS systems admin area, but i am a week into looking into this and i am still no wiser. Please could someone give some sound advice so i can get this running smooth thanks p.s i have added the copSSH notes as i think that when i SFTP the files to the server, this may somehow have some involvement in messing up permissions

• Social Engineering approach to collecting from deadbeat ebay winners

  You just sold something on e-bay and now the winner won't pay up.  What do you do?  I'm not sure what the legality of this kind of Social Engineering hack is, but I believe you've got to give it points for elegance.   Here's the link to the lifehacker.com post (I can't find the original Reddit post.) Reddit user "BadgerMatt" (we'll call him Matt for short) recently posted a story about how he tried to sell tickets to a sporting event on eBay, but when the auction was won the winning bidder backed out of the deal. In some cases this is mainly an inconvenience and you can re-list the item, but Matt was selling tickets to a sporting event and no longer had the time to do that. With the losing bidders uninterested in the tickets, he was going to end up stuck with tickets he couldn't use and a deadbeat bidder who was unwilling to honor their contract. Rather than give up, Matt decided to trick her into paying: I created a new eBay account, "Payback" we'll call it, and sent her a message: "Hi there, I noticed you won an auction for 4 [sporting event] tickets. I meant to bid on these but couldn't get to a computer. I wanted to take my son and dad and would be willing to give you $1,000 for the tickets. I imagine that you've already made plans to attend, but I figured it was worth a shot." The woman agreed, but for $1,100. She paid for the auction, received the tickets, and then Matt (of course) never re-purchased them. Needless to say, the woman was angry. Perhaps it was the wrong thing for the right reasons, but I'm mostly jealous I never thought of it back when I still sold things on eBay.

• Resolving System Restore error - Error 0x800423F3 - The writer experienced a transient error

  System restore just stopped working, when I needed it most. (tried diff restore points... same error). Now everytime I run system-restore, it fails with the above error message. I cleared the event logs and retried to isolate the relevant events. I see 5 warnings and 1 info event from VSS and 1 error from System Restore.   My main email client is Outlook 2010 for Windows 7. I also have a Mac but I do not use it that much however on the MAC you have Outlook 2011. In my Outlook 2010 for Windows 7, I have many many folders. There is one feature I would like to know if it is available or something similar which is on Outlook 2011 for the Mac. On the Outlook 2011 for the mac you can go to: Top Menu Message Move Choose Folder or press (SHIT+CMD "press" M) This bring up a box where you can just type the beginning part of the folder and all the folders with that beginning appears (To search), you select the one you want and the selected emails move to that folder. I hope I have explained it well. Does anyone know if there is a plugin on Outlook 2010 or may I have just missed the function. Thank you

• Running OLEDB VB6 Windows Progam Under Wine

  I'm trying to install a VB6 Windows program that uses OLEDB to access VFP tables to run under Wine 1.0.1 on Ubuntu 9.10. Wine is configured to Windows version Windows XP. The program install ran okay, and I used winetricks to install MDAC 2.8 and JET 4.0 sp7. I also installed Microsoft's vfpoledb and vfpodbc drivers. The application starts and displays an error message, item cannot be found in the collection corresponding to the requested name or ordinal. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?

• Dreamweaver not loading due to workspace file problem

  I went to launch Dreamweaver CS 5.5 and this message popped up: XML parsing fatal error: Invalid document structure, line 1, file C:\Documents...(file path)...Workspace\My Workspace.xml It was followed by The following panel layout is missing or could not be read: C:...My Workspace.xml The application will not have a correct layout. Please load one from WindowsWorkspace After that, Dreamweaver acted as if it was going to load, but never did. When I tried to close the program, it crashed. I followed the file path and I saw two files: My Workspace.xml 0kb and My Workspace 5kb. The second one has an unknown file type. I deleted the first file and renamed the unknown file type to My Workspace.xml; everything worked fine after that point. Why did Dreamweaver do this? This has happened several times, but I have not changed anything that should affect that file type.

  I'm having some issues on a Windows 2008 server with some network connections not going through.
