• Samples of Scala and Java code where Scala code looks simpler/has fewer lines?

  I need some code samples (and I also really curious about them) of Scala and Java code which show that Scala code is more simple and concise then code written in Java (of course both samples should solve the same problem). • Why do Java/C# edge out C++ as the recommended language to learn OOP on S.O?

  I noticed after reading the answers/discussion to this question (What is the best language to learn OOP on?) - that more and more people are recommending C# or Java over C++ to learn OOP on. A simple term search on that answer page results in 10 hits for C++, 21 for C# and 27 for Java. Now, I understand that these 2 languages fix a lot of quirks and issues with C++, and looked up these resources that relate mostly to performance, JVM vs native implementation, systems focus vs applications, manual memory management vs automated et al. My question is - are there any fundamental differences in the OO capabilities of Java/C# vs C++? Or are the former recommended purely due to their generic ease of use/improvements over the latter? Thanks. PS, I'm aware of Java interface inheritance vs C++ multiple inheritance as a difference. I would consider that an implementational one rather than functional.

  Hi I'm using an application called Logi info. it requires a connection string to my oracle database. the connection works fine but in order to configure the connection to recive ref cursors from the database, I apparently need to add PLSQLRSet=1 to the end of the string. when I do that I recieve an error "invalid connection string" Here is my connection string without plsqlrset=1 Data Source=SID; User Id=username; Password=password; My concern is that PLSQLRSet=1 might be .NET paramater only. Can anyone shed some light on the issue. Thanks

  I have an Oracle function that dynamically creates an XML document, and returns it in a SYS.XMLTYPE value. I want to run a query from SQL Developer that calls that function and prints the document (either via a select, or dbms_output - I don't care). But all the examples/documentation seem to refer to querying XML columns in tables, and I can't seem to get the syntax right for my particular usage.   I have an SQL statement where I would like to get data of 1200 ep_codes by making use of IN. When I include more than 1000 ep_codes inside IN statement, Oracle says I'm not allowed to do that. To overcome this, I tried to change the SQL code as follows: SELECT ... FROM ... WHERE ... AND ep_codes IN (...1000 ep_codes...) OR ep_codes IN (...200 ep_codes...) The code was executed succesfully but the results are strange. Is it appropriate to do that using OR between INs or should I execute two separate codes as one with 1000 and the other with 200 ep_codes?

  Evaluating a third party data processing tool, I have bumped into a case where some WinZip files cause an exception: Caused by: gnu.java.util.zip.ZipException: Unknown compression method 98 at gnu.java.util.zip.ZipFile.getInputStream(ZipFile.java:470) I have seen this with files created with WinZip 11.2 and newer. What's the latest version of WinZip (or compatible compression method) that the zip.dll can handle? I've been hunting for some reference on this, but other than unversioned source code, I have had little luck so far.

• Did we always have to register to download the Java 5 JDK, or is this new Oracle fun?

  I could swear that just a couple of months ago I downloaded a copy of the Java 1.5 SE JDK and I did not have to give them information on my first born. Today, I had to go through the register-and-we-will-send-you-a-link-someday dance. I have not received the link yet, so I thought I would ask about it here. What is special about the Java 5 JDK? I can get 6 just by clicking, is this a stick to get us to migrate to Java 6? Am I just not remembering doing this before? What marketing genius thought this would be a value add for Java? "If we make them sweat for the JDK they won't just delete it willy-nilly the next time?" Does everyone picture the people designing systems like this as mustache twirling Snidely Whiplash clones like I do? Did I just miss the link for the Secret Squirrel route to the download page? Finally, I am in the U.S. so I should not have to worry about export restrictions. Any thoughts?

• Connection hangs after time of inactivity

  In my application, Spring manages connection pool for database access. Hibernate uses these connections for its queries. At first glance, I have no problems with the pool: it works correctly with concurrent clients and a pool with only one connection. I can execute a lot of queries, so I think that I (or Spring) don't leave open connections. My problem appears after some time of inactivity (sometimes 30 minutes, sometimes more than 2 hours). Then, when Hibernate does some search, it lasts too much. After that, it works with no problems, until another period of inactivity. IMHO, it seems like connection pool returns an invalid/closed connection, and when Hibernate realizes that, ask another connection to the pool. I don't know how can I solve this problem or things I can do for delimiting it. Any help achieving this will be appreciate. Thanks. EDIT: Well, it finally was due a firewall rule. Database detects the connection is lost, but pool (dbcp or c3p0) not. So, it tries to query the database with no success. What is still strange for me is that timeout period is very variable. Maybe the rule is specially strange or firewall doesn't work correctly. Anyway, I have no access to that machine and I can only wait for an explanation. :(

• Oracle Sql Query taking a day long to return results using dblink

  Guys i have the following oracle sql query that gives me the monthwise report between the dates. Basically for nov month i want sum of values between the dates 01nov to 30 nov. The table tha is being queried is residing in another database and accesssed using dblink. The DT columns is of NUMBER type (for ex 20101201) .The execution of the query is taking a day long and not completed. kindly suggest me , if their is any optimisation that can be suggested to my DBA on the dblink, or any tuning that can be done on the query , or rewriting the same. • Connect to Oracle database on a different server from PHP

  Hello I have a database engine sitting on a remote server, while my webserver is present locally. I have worked pretty much with client-server architecture, where the server has both the webserver and the database engine. Now I need to connect to an Oracle database which is situated on a different server. Can anybody give me any suggestions?? I believe ODBC_CONNECT might not work. Do I use OCI8 drivers?? How would I connect to my database server. Also I would have a very high number of database calls going back and forth, so is it good to go with persistent connection or do I still use individual database calls?

• How to put JFrame into existing JPanel in Java Swing?

  I have an open-source java swing application like this: http://i47.tinypic.com/dff4f7.jpg You can see in the screenshot, there is a JPanel divided into two area, left and right area. The left area has many text links. When I click the SLA Criteria link, it will pop-up the SLA Criteria window. The pop-up window is JFrame object. Now, I'm trying to put the pop-up window into right area of the JPanel, so that means no pop-up window anymore, i.e. when I click the SLA Criteria link, its contents will be displayed at the right area of the JPanel. The existing content of the right area of JPanel will not be used anymore. The example illustration (note: it's made and edited using image editor, this is not the real screenshot of working application) is like this: http://i48.tinypic.com/5vrxaa.jpg So, I would like to know is there a way to put JFrame into JPanel? I'm thinking of using JInternalFrame, is it possible? Or is there another way?
