  • Replacement for C low level programming?

    So C obviously has a pretty dominant low level programming stronghold.....but is anything coming out that challenges/wants to replace it? Python/C#/etc all seem to be aimed at very high level, but when it comes down to nitty-gritty low level stuff C seems to be king and I haven't seen much "try" to replace that? Is there anything out there, or does learning C for low level stuff seem to be the standard?

  • Defining DateDiff for a calculated column in a datatable

    I have the column DateTimeExpired, and I would like to create another column called "Expired" which will show "Yes" or "No" according to the expiration date - "Yes" if the date has already passed. I wrote this: DataColumn colExpirationDate = new DataColumn("DateTimeExpired", typeof(DateTime)); DataColumn colExpired = new DataColumn("Expired", typeof(string), "IIF(DateDiff(DateTimeExpired, date())>= 0,'No','Yes')"); But I get an exception "The expression contains undefined function call DateDiff()." (please note that I always want to get the row, no matter if it's expired or not) How do I set the column's text to the correct form?

  • How can I use django.core.files.File

    The docs for django.core.files.File imply I can do this: print File(open(path)).url but the File object has no attribute 'url' However, django.db.models.fields.files.FieldFile extends File and does have all the attributes described in the docs for File, but I can't create one without giving it a model field. All I want it something that does what the docs for django.core.files.File (link above) say it does, take a python file and give it attributes like 'url' and 'path' and 'name', can anyone help?   • C# - Can FileHelper FieldConverter routines refer to other fields in the record?

    I am using the excellent FileHelpers library to process a fixed-length airline schedule file. I have a date field, then a few fields later on in the record, a time field. I want to combine both of these in the FileHelpers record class, and know there is a custom FieldConverter attribute. With this attribute, you provide a custom function to handle your field data and implement StringToField and FieldToString. My question is: can I pass other fields (already read) to this customer FieldConverter too, so I can combine Date and Time together. FieldConverter has an implementation that allows you to refer to both a custom processing class AND 'other strings' or even an array of object. But, given this is done in the attribute definition, I am struggling to access this earlier-field reference. [FieldFixedLength(4)] [FieldConverter(typeof(MyTimeConverter),"eg.   • Graphical sandbox for pathfinding

    If you needed a clean and consistent sandbox for pathfinding what would you use? I want to experiment with different pathfinding algorithms by sending virtual units (robots) around obstacles on a geometric plane. But I don't need a feature overkill like a game engine or Flash might have, just an animated report and native collision detector. I prefer it to be scripted in python, but if there are java or C++ alternatives I would appreciate them as well.

I'm assuming this is conventional wisdom and that it applies to all dynamic languages. Why? What is it about dynamic languages that makes IOC containers unnecessary?

    What's the best way to run a query so that spaces in the fields are ignored? For example the following queries.... SELECT * FROM mytable WHERE username = "JohnBobJones" SELECT * FROM mytable WHERE username = "John Bob Jones" . would find the following entries: John Bob Jones JohnBob Jones JohnBobJones . I am using php or python but I think this doesn't matter.

  • Why shouldn't I always use nullable types in C#.

    I've been searching for some good guidance on this since the concept was introduced in .net 2.0. Why would I ever want to use non-nullable data types in c#? (A better question is why wouldn't I choose nullable types by default, and only use non-nullable types when that explicitly makes sense.) Is there a 'significant' performance hit to choosing a nullable data type over its non-nullable peer? I much prefer to check my values against null instead of Guid.empty, string.empty, DateTime.MinValue,<= 0, etc, and to work with nullable types in general. And the only reason I don't choose nullable types more often is the itchy feeling in the back of my head that makes me feel like it's more than backwards compatibility that forces that extra '?' character to explicitly allow a null value. Is there anybody out there that always (most always) chooses nullable types rather than non-nullable types? Thanks for your time,

  • Getting Started with CacheMoney

    I recently installed cache-money. After some difficulties getting memcached and cache-money set up, I thought I had it working. It cached the one query on my login page fine. I login, and go to my message index page and get this error: indices delegated to @cache_config.indices, but @cache_config is nil: Slug(id: integer, name: string, sluggable_id: integer, sequence: integer, sluggable_type: string, scope: string, created_at: datetime) Searching for the first part of that error message returns 0 hits on Google, so I'm at a loss on where to even begin. Any suggestions?

  • what's the right way to use scala.io.Source?

    In many examples, it is described that you can use scala.io.Source to read a whole file like this: val str = scala.io.Source.fromFile("test.txt").mkString() But closing the underlying stream is not mentioned. Why does Scala not provide a convenient way to do that such as with clause in Python? It looks useful but not difficult. Is there any other better way to do that safely in Scala, i means to read a whole file?

    Hi All, I have a quick question. How do I select the two values I need in one query? Currently I'm doing this, which works fine, but it's obviously running two queries when one should do the trick. I tried MAX(columnA) and GROUP BY ColumnB, but that returns multiple row. I only want one row returned. DECLARE @biID bigint , @dtThreshold DateTime SELECT @biID = MAX(biID) FROM tbPricingCalculationCount WITH (NOLOCK) SELECT @dtThreshold = dtDateTime FROM tbPricingCalculationCount WITH (NOLOCK) WHERE biID = @biID I would like both those variables to be set correctly in one query.   • MS SQL Server 15MM rows, simple COUNT query. 15+ seconds?

    We took over a website from another company after a client decided to switch. We have a table that grows by about 25k records a day, and is currently at 15MM records. The table looks something like: id (PK, int, not null) member_id (int, not null) another_id (int, not null) date (datetime, not null) SELECT COUNT(id) FROM tbl can take up to 15 seconds. A simple inner join on 'another_id' takes over 30 seconds. I can't imagine why this is taking so long. Any advice? SQL Server 2005 Express
