  • WPF - Transparency - Stream Desktop Content

    Greetings I'm in the process of making a Scoreboard for a game (Starcraft II). This scoreboard is being made as a WPF Application with a C# code-behind. I already have a version which works for 90% in WinForms but I lacked the support to easily make it look a lot nicer which are available in WPF. The point of this application will be to form a kind of overlay on top of a running game. This game is in Fulscreen(Windowed Mode) so when in WinForms I coded it so that it should always be on top. It would do so and that was no problem. Since the main look of the app in WPF is based on an image with a transparent background I have set most Background values to Transparent. However when I do this the entire application does not get registered by streaming software. For example it just shows my Desktop or the game I'm playing but not my application even though it IS there. I can see it with my own eyes but the audience on the stream cannot. Does anyone have any experience with this matter because it's really doing my head in. My entire application will be useless if it is not visible on streams. If I have to put the background on a color rather than transparent the UI will be completely demolished as well in terms of looks. I'm basically trying to make a game-overlay in C# & WPF. I have read you can do this on different ways as well but I have little to no knowledge of C++ nor do I know anything about DirectX Thank you for your time reading and your possible insights. Edit: The best solution would be an overlay similar to that one of Steam/Xfire/Dolby Axon. Edit 2: I've had no luck with all the suggestions so I basically made the transparent bits of my image non transparent and let the user decide which one to use depending on what streaming software they would be using.

I put this style in my ButtonResourceDictionary: <Style TargetType="Button"> <Setter Property="Padding" Value="3" /> <Setter Property="FontWeight" Value="Bold" /> </Style> All buttons now have the correct padding and bold text, but they look "Classic", not "Aero". How do I fix this style so my buttons all look Aero but also have these minor changes? I would prefer not to have to set the Style property for every button.

  • Atomic operations on several transactionless external systems

    Say you have an application connecting 3 different external systems. You need to update something in all 3. In case of a failure, you need to roll back the operations. This is not a hard thing to implement, but say operation 3 fails, and when rolling back, the rollback for operation 1 fails! Now the first external system is in an invalid state... I'm thinking a possible solution is to shut down the application and forcing a manual fix of the external system, but then again... It might already have used this information (and perhaps that's why it failed), or we might not have sufficient access. Or it might not even be a good way to rollback the action! Are there some good ways of handling such cases? EDIT: Some application details.. It's a multi user web application. Most of the work is done with scheduled jobs (through Quartz.Net), so most operations is run in it's own thread. Some user actions should trigger jobs that update several systems though. The external systems are somewhat unstable. I Was thinking of changing the application to use the Command and Unit Of Work pattern

    When making an ajax call, when contentType is set to application/json instead of the default x-www-form-urlencoded, server side (in PHP) can't get the post parameters. in the following working example, if I set the contentType to "application/json" in the ajax request, PHP $_POST would be empty. why does this happen?     Why doesn't keyboard input work for a ScrollViewer when the child control has input focus? This is the scenario. A WPF window opens. It sets the focus to a control that is embedded in a ScrollViewer. I hit the up and down and left and right keys. The ScrollViewer doesn't seem to handle the key events, anyone know why? This is the simplest possible example: <Window x:Class="WpfApplication1.Window1" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" Title="Window1" Height="300" Width="300" FocusManager.FocusedElement="{Binding ElementName=control}" > <Grid> <ScrollViewer HorizontalScrollBarVisibility="Auto" > <ItemsControl x:Name="control" Width="1000" Height="1000" /> </ScrollViewer> </Grid> </Window> When you start the app that contains this window, "control" appears to have the focus as I intended. Pressing the key seems to result in bubbling key events reaching the ScrollViewer (I checked for this using WPF Snoop). I can't work out why it doesn't respond to the input.

So securityGroups is in many-to-many relationship with User table and one-to-many with LookupApplciation (FK) Now I want to select all application linked to a specific user. I have follow criteria: public IList<LookupApplication> GetApplicationByUser(User user) { return this.Session.CreateCriteria(typeof(SecurityGroup), "sg") .CreateAlias("Members", "u") .CreateAlias("Application", "al") .Add(Restrictions.Eq("u.Id", user.Id)) .List<LookupApplication>(); } It trows an exception The value "Edi.Advance.Core.Model.Security.SecurityGroup" is not of type "Edi.Advance.Core.Model.Lookups.LookupApplication" and cannot be used in this generic collection. Parameter name: value and it is right. How can I transform the result to IList<LookupApplication>? Thanks

Or just an other event? Though the main thing i am questioning myself is if it is the best practice to load all the javascript at startup. Wouldnt it be better to only load the controllers/views/... which the client does need right now? Or should i load all the JS at startup? If i do want to load the controllers dynamicly how could i do this? I assume a would have to remove them from my application arrays (views, controllers, stores) and create an instance if i do need it and mby set the view in the controllers init?! What's best practice??

    I am creating an application that can be executed in any windows version, even in mobile's, and I am trying to get the current directory of the executable. The problem is that if I use the following code, it doesn't compile in Windows Mobile: string currentDirectory = System.IO.Path.GetDirectoryName(System.Windows.Forms.Application.ExecutablePath); And if I use this code, I receive something like: file:\C:\xxx string currentDirectory = System.IO.Path.GetDirectoryName(System.Windows.Forms.Application.ExecutablePath); Although, I need to get the root drive, and this code doesn't compile in Windows Mobile: String rootPath = Path.GetPathRoot(Environment.SystemDirectory); Does anyone know how to get the current directory of the application and the root path for any windows version, even mobile's?

    Greetings and Hello I am trying to put together a wordpress site, now because the content in the main div is going to be a different height with every page I need the navigation sidebar to stretch to the same height. So with a little javascript tom-foolery I can get the sidebar to be the same height with the following code function adjust(){ hgt=document.getElementById('content').offsetHeight; document.getElementById('sidebar').style.height=hgt+'px'; } window.onload=adjust; window.onresize=adjust; Now that's all good for a long page but if the content is smaller then the sidebar stuff gets all messy.     I'm debating whether to use Silverlight 2.0 vs ASP.NET MVC for a web application. The web application will be a subscription free service marketing all age groups. It's important the source is highly testable, but also with the Web 2.0 movement a graphical web application is important as well for competitive reasons. I'm assuming silverlight is better than the ajax helpers/MVC graphically, but foundation-wise testing is better/easier with MVC. Possibly an MVP pattern with Silverlight could increase the testability of the source. Could anyone elaborate on the pros/cons of each technology and recommend one or the other based on the above? (addition 9/22/08) In regards to allowing search engines to index the site, using either technology it will utilize a backend database whereas a lot of the content will be dynamically generated. Based on some of the comments, when we talk of the searchable content would the home page of the application if written in silverlight be searchable? Would I be able to get the site to appear in a google search?

    MySQL supports "for update" keyword. Here is how I tested that it is working as expected. I opened 2 browser tabs and executed the following commands in one window. mysql> start transaction; Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec) mysql> select * from myxml where id = 2 for update; .... mysql> update myxml set id = 3 where id = 2 limit 1; Query OK, 1 row affected, 1 warning (0.00 sec) Rows matched: 1 Changed: 1 Warnings: 0 mysql> commit; Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.08 sec) In another window, I started the transaction and tried to take an update lock on the same record. mysql> start transaction; Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec) mysql> select * from myxml where id = 2 for update; Empty set (43.81 sec) As you can see from the above example, I could not select the record for 43 seconds as the transaction was being processed by another application in the Window No 1. Once the transaction was over, I got to select the record, but since the id 2 was changed to id 3 by the transaction that was executed first, no record was returned. My question is what are the disadvantages of using "for update" syntax? If I do not commit the transaction that is running in window 1 will the record be locked for-ever?

  • Inserting default "admin" user into database during Rails App startup

    I'm building my first real rails application for a little in-house task. Most of the application tasks require authentication/authorization. The first time the app starts up (or starts with a wiped db), I'd like the process to be: User logs into the admin panel using "admin" & "admin" for authentication info. User navigates to admin credentials editing page and changes name and password to something safer so that "admin" & "admin" is no longer a valid login. To achieve this result, I'd like to stuff a default username & password combination into the database on if the application starts up and detects that there are no user credentials in the 'users' table. For example: if User.count == 0 User.create(:name => "admin", :password => "admin") end However, I'm unsure where to place that code. I tried adding an initializer script in the config/initializers, but the error I received appeared to indicate that the model classes weren't yet loaded into the application. So I'm curious to know at what point I can hook into the application startup cycle and insert data into the database through ActiveRecord before requests are dispatched.

    I have a plugin module that goes into a web application. If the module does not load correctly, it does not make sense for the web application to go on, and the web application should probably not load at all, we would prefer this module to initialize correctly always. If I were to throw a runtime exception, it would get into the logs, and just get ignored since the application will continue anyway, and the end users would never know... I know that errors are meant to be thrown only under exceptional conditions, and they generally have to do with situations that the system cannot recover from, but what would you do in such a situation?

  • Why doesn't the SplitView iPhone template have a nib file for the RootView?

    I'm diving into iPad development and am learning a lot quickly, but everywhere I look, I have questions. After creating a new SplitView app in Xcode using the template, it generates the AppDelegate class, RootViewController class, and DetailViewController class. Along with that, it creates a .xib files for MainWinow.xib and DetailView.xib. How do these five files work together? Why is there a nib file for the DetailView, but not the RootView? When I double click on the MainWindow.xib file, Interface Builder launches without a "View" window, why? Below is the code for didFinishLaunchingWithOptions method inside the AppDelegate class. Why are we adding the splitViewController as a subview?
