• June 2013 Release of the Ajax Control Toolkit

  I’m happy to announce the June 2013 release of the Ajax Control Toolkit. For this release, we enhanced the AjaxFileUpload control to support uploading files directly to Windows Azure. We also improved the SlideShow control by adding support for CSS3 animations. You can get the latest release of the Ajax Control Toolkit by visiting the project page at CodePlex (http://AjaxControlToolkit.CodePlex.com). Alternatively, you can execute the following NuGet command from the Visual Studio Library Package Manager window: Uploading Files to Azure The AjaxFileUpload control enables you to efficiently upload large files and display progress while uploading. With this release, we’ve added support for uploading large files directly to Windows Azure Blob Storage (You can continue to upload to your server hard drive if you prefer). Imagine, for example, that you have created an Azure Blob Storage container named pictures. In that case, you can use the following AjaxFileUpload control to upload to the container: <toolkit:ToolkitScriptManager runat="server" /> <toolkit:AjaxFileUpload ID="AjaxFileUpload1" StoreToAzure="true" AzureContainerName="pictures" runat="server" /> Notice that the AjaxFileUpload control is declared with two properties related to Azure. You can see that all 5 files were uploaded successfully: New AjaxFileUpload Events In response to user feedback, we added two new events to the AjaxFileUpload control (on both the server and the client): · UploadStart – Raised on the server before any files have been uploaded. · UploadCompleteAll – Raised on the server when all files have been uploaded. · OnClientUploadStart – The name of a function on the client which is called before any files have been uploaded. · OnClientUploadCompleteAll – The name of a function on the client which is called after all files have been uploaded. These new events are most useful when uploading multiple files at a time. The updated AjaxFileUpload sample page demonstrates how to use these events to show the total amount of time required to upload multiple files (see the AjaxFileUpload.aspx file in the Ajax Control Toolkit sample site). SlideShow Animated Slide Transitions With this release of the Ajax Control Toolkit, we also added support for CSS3 animations to the SlideShow control. The animation is used when transitioning from one slide to another. Is there any way to get more information about the cause of the error? It is useful to know that these are pretty big documents, 3-50 megabytes. They reside on the Linux server so reading them is just a local disk read, and is unlikely to be a contributor to the problem. But sheer size might be an issue for the recipients browser? Is this kind of error rate typical for downloads? My personal experience downloading other's documents suggests no; our internal attempts show this to be very reliable, but we're operating on our internal network for such experiments so we're missing the complexity of the intervening internet.

• Accessing SharePoint 2010 Data with REST/OData on Windows Phone 7

  Consuming SharePoint 2010 data in Windows Phone 7 applications using the CTP version of the developer tools is quite a challenge. The issue is that the SharePoint 2010 data is not anonymously available; users need to authenticate to be able to access the data. When I first tried to access SharePoint 2010 data from my first Hello-World-type Windows Phone 7 application I thought “Hey, this should be easy!” because Windows Phone 7 development based on Silverlight and SharePoint 2010 has a Client Object Model for Silverlight. Unfortunately you can’t use the Client Object Model of SharePoint 2010 on the Windows Phone platform; there’s a reference to an assembly that’s not available (System.Windows.Browser). My second thought was “OK, no problem!” because SharePoint 2010 also exposes a REST/OData API to access SharePoint data. Using the REST API in SharePoint 2010 is as easy as making a web request for a URL (in which you specify the data you’d like to retrieve), e.g. http://yoursiteurl/_vti_bin/listdata.svc/Announcements. This is very easy to accomplish in a Silverlight application that’s running in the context of a page in a SharePoint site, because the credentials of the currently logged on user are automatically picked up and passed to the WCF service. But a Windows Phone application is of course running outside of the SharePoint site’s page, so the application should build credentials that have to be passed to SharePoint’s WCF service. This turns out to be a small challenge in Silverlight 3, the WebClient doesn’t support authentication; there is a Credentials property but when you set it and make the request you get a NotImplementedException exception. Probably this issued will be solved in the very near future, since Silverlight 4 does support authentication, and there’s already a WCF Data Services download that uses this new platform feature of Silverlight 4. So when Windows Phone platform switches to Silverlight 4, you can just use the WebClient to get the data. Even more, if the OData Client Library for Windows Phone 7 gets updated after that, things should get even easier! By the way: the things I’m writing in this paragraph are just assumptions that I make which make a lot of sense IMHO, I don’t have any info all of this will happen, but I really hope so. So are SharePoint developers out of the Windows Phone development game until they get this fixed? Well luckily not, when the HttpWebRequest class is being used instead, you can pass credentials! Using the HttpWebRequest class is slightly more complex than using the WebClient class, but the end result is that you have access to your precious SharePoint 2010 data.   I had the question today of whether SharePoint 2010 supports workflow on multiple items, since Groove's workflow apparently supported multiple items and that model disappeared when Groove Workspaces were amalgamated into SharePoint Sites and SharePoint Workspace (the client utility). It's a great question, the short answer is that yes, it's possible.
