• Installing GDAL for Python

  I am trying to install GDAL for python on a Windows XP machine (Python 2.6 currently installed) following the instructions at http://trac.osgeo.org/gdal/wiki/GdalOgrInPython (as is mirrored in a hundred other places). It says I need both the GDAL source (or Windows binary) and the python bindings. The python binding are be downloaded from the python cheeseshop (http://pypi.python.org/pypi/Python_GDAL/1.3.1). I don't see a download link on this page nor can I locate the python binding elsewhere - all instruction I can find seem to point to the same cheeseshop page. This seems like I'm either missing something embarrassingly simple or the bindings file has disappeared. Any thoughts on which it is? Thanks.

• VS development on FDCC compliant Workstation

  Hi, I have a FDCC compliant workstation with FIPS 140-1 (Level 1) enabled. Now, i cannot run/debug any VS 2005/2008 applications on my machine I get the following error message on my browser Parser Error Message: This implementation is not part of the Windows Platform FIPS validated cryptographic algorithms. the Error points to line no 1 of default.aspx.cs file using system; The only way to successfully debug/run my application is to set the following registry key to 0 HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\fipsalgorithmpolicy I understand that there are some Cryptographic algorithms that are not FIPS compliant on XP SP2 but i am not using cryptography at all. For that matter, the solution contains just default.aspx page with default code in .cs file, and even that fails to run. So my question is why the webpage fails to load, and why the error points to line #1 "using System;" statement? My next question is how can i develop on FIPS compliant locked down maching where i do not have edit rights on registry Thanks kudlur

• C# console applications all 16bit?

  Hi all, I was reading up about NTVDM.exe as I build a quick test console app and it crashed on a friends machine complaining about this EXE. As I understand it all DOS cmd windows (C# console apps included) run as 16bit not 32bit. Is this true? Does this mean all my works console app back office apps are running as 16bit rather than making the most of the 32bit available? What about Windows services? As I believe we wrote it as a console app then made it run as a windows service? Thanks

  If you make a little research on the internet you'll see many DLLImport styles for this user32.dll function: HDC GetDC(HWND hWnd); The question is: what type is more appropriate for .NET x64 apps (either compiled with the Platform target as AnyCPU on a x64 machine or specifically as x64)? IntPtr for example grows to a size of 8 on a x64 process, can this be a problem? Is uint more appropriate than Uint64? What is the size of the pointers this function uses when used in a x64 process? The DLL is called user32.dll does it work as 32bit or 64bit on a x64 operating system? • Cannot connect to local database.

  Hi, I have apache and mysql set up on my local machine (Mac). Whenever I go to any of my local sites I get the "Error establishing a database connection" whenever anything mySql related happens. It was working perfectly yesterday, but when I started my computer today it is not. I can login to mysql on the terminal and that all works fine, I can view database and run queries in the terminal. Look at all my table etc. I've tried restarting apache. Anyone know what's up? This is worrying.

• Flex Dataprovider caching issue.

  I have two combobox controls. If i change combobox A then I am reading from xml and populating combobox B. The xml is loaded into memory in Application's creationComplete method. When I select values in combobox A and then open combobox B, I am seeing the values correctly, but when I deploy it on the server in a different machine (which is in a different subdomain), then my combobox B values are not cleared and are retained by old selection, when I select the combobox B, then it is getting refreshed. I am making the dataprovider = null for combobox b, and when I am assigning new collection then i am refreshing the arraycollection as well. But still the problem is not solved.

• How Easy Is It to Hijack Session Vars on GoDaddy (PHP)

  This article states that If your site is run on a shared Web server, be aware that any session variables can easily be viewed by any other users on the same server. On a larger host like GoDaddy, are there really no protections in place against this? Could it really be that easy? If it is that easy, where are the session vars of the other users on my host so I can check them out? Edit: I didn't believe it, but here's my little program which shows that this is true! I wonder if those are really the same as the value stored in the cookies on the users' machine?

• mysql C connector unresolved symbols on Win2k8 but not on XP?

  I have a visual C++ 2008 express project which compiles fine on Windows XP with mysql C connector 6.0.2. When I copy the project over to a Windows Server 2008 x64 machine, it gets a bunch of linker errors like "unresolved external symbol _mysql_server_end@0" "unresolved external symbol _mysql_close@4" "unresolved external _mysql_real_connect@32". Is the mysql C connector 6.0.2 known to not work with Win Server 2008? (Note, the C connector is installed into the same place on both machines, and since I just copied over the project wholesale, it still has the correct libmysql.lib include. The interesting thing is that the errors I get on XP if I remove the libmysql.lib are not the same errors I'm getting on Win2k8, so that's what makes me think it might be an incompatibility...or maybe it's just because win2k8 is x64 and XP is x86?) • Can I get a dump of all my databases *except one* using mysqldump?

  I'm currently using mySQLdump to backup my dev machine and servers. There is one project I just started, however, that has a HUUUUUGE database that I don't really need backed up, and i'll be a big problem to add it to the rest of the backup cycle. I'm currently doing this: "c:\Program Files\mysql\MySQL Server 5.1\bin\mysqldump" -u root -pxxxxxx --all-databases g:\backups\MySQL\mysqlbackup.sql Is it possible to somehow specify "except this database(s)"? I wouldn't like to have to specify the list of DBs manually, since that would mean that I'd have to remember updating my backup batch file every time I create a new DB, and I know that's not gonna happen. EDIT: As you probably guessed from my command line above, i'm doing this on Windows, so I can't do any kind of fancy bash stuff, only wimpy .bat things. Alternatively, if you have other ideas to solve this same issue, they are more than welcome, of course! Thanks Daniel

  This is the error Dependency Walker gives me on an executable that I am building with VC++ 2005 Express Edition. When trying to run the .exe, I get: This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem. (I am new to the manifest/SxS/etc. way of doing things post VC++ 2003.) EDIT: I am running on the same machine I am building the .exe with. In Event Viewer, I have the unhelpful: Faulting application blah.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module blah.exe, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x004239b0.

  Hi I need to send an email from my app, which will be running under medium trust. My current email sending code that works fine under full trust throws SecurityException under medium trust [SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Net.Mail.SmtpPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.] Examining my machine.config and allied files reveal that my SMTP access is restricted to Connect. <SecurityClass Name="SmtpPermission" Description="System.Net.Mail.SmtpPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089"/> and <IPermission class="SmtpPermission" version="1" Access="Connect"/> According to MSDN, Connect allows request on port 25 only. But Gmail servers work on port 587. Any workarounds? suggestions?

• aws-s3 can't find xml-simple, but in gem list

  I'm transitioning to heroku, and need to have AWS-s3 connections to deal with a variety of graphics. I've installed the aws-s3 gem, but one of its dependencies is not being found: xml-simple. My belief is that this is a standard part of RoR, and it is in the gem list. When I deploy to heroku, all is fine, but on my development server, it isn't being found when the code uses it to check the existence of a graphic. It works fine from the console, using s3sh. I'm not quite sure why this is -- what do I need to check? Using OS X 10.6, on a 64 bit machine -- can this be part of it?

• Running custom Javascript on every page in Mozilla Firefox

  I have a custom piece of Javascript which I would like to run on every web page from specific domains, or perhaps simply on every web page. (If you are wondering: it is not malicious. It allows to display formulas by using MathJax.) Is that possible? I tried including it in userContent.css, that of course did not work. A simple Greasemonkey script I tried did not insert it. Is it because of the security precautions? (Which would be very logical). Still, there should be a way to do it on the machine I physically control, by changing something in Mozilla chrome directory, shouldn't it? Anyway, how can I do this for myself?

LAME and the compiled code reside in the same directory when installed. Help!

  Im trying to understand how boolean logic works when I use NOT. To give an example using awk I have a text file containing CORE PORT CORE PORT COREPORT CORE COREPORT And I would like to remove all COREPORT lines. The way I thought I would do it was with (NOT CORE) AND (NOT PORT) eg awk '/!CORE/&&/!PORT/{print}' But when I try it out Im actually supposed to use OR instead of AND awk '/!CORE/||/!PORT/{print}' I would be really glad if some one could explain where my thinking is wrong and super glad if it could be visualized with a venn diagram or something like the boolean machine at kathyschrock

  My Visual Studio 2005 is a French one, installed on a French OS. All the exceptions I receive during debug or runtime I obtain also in French. Can I however do something that the exceptions messages be in English? For goggling, discussing etc. I tried the following: Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentUICulture = new CultureInfo("en-US"); throw new NullReferenceException(); obtained Object reference not set to an instance of an object. This is, surely, cool... but, as I work on a French project, I will not hardcode forcing Thread.CurrentUICulture to English. I want the English change to be only on my local machine, and don't change the project properties. Is it possible to set the exceptions language without modifying the code of the application? • Is there an ftp plugin for gedit that will let me work locally?

  I'm trying to switch from a windows environment to Linux. I'm primarily PHP developer, but I do know quite a bit about other languages such as CSS, XHTML and Javascript. I need a way of editing my files locally because I work in a git repository and need to commit my saves. On windows I used Aptana and PDT. I'd save my files, upload via Aptana, then commit my work with git. I need to get a work flow going on my Linux machine now. If you know a better way to do this let me know, however my real question is, is there a plugin that allows gedit to upload files instead of working remotely?

I would like to pre-install OR pre-load OR cache the JavaScript library on each machine (each browser as well) so that it does not travel for each request. I know that browsers do cache a JavaScript library for subsequent requests but I would like the library to be cached once for all subsequent requests, sessions and users. • What web server should I use if I want to run Java code behind it?

  At the moment, I have lot's of Java which does all kind of nifty stuff and I'm happy with it. The code is command line driven which have been great so far, but I recently decided I want to make the functionality available through web-services. Since my is complex and I'm happy with the way it's written , I don't want go through the pain of porting it to other languages. So I set out on a google journey to find out what web servers exist (on a Linux machine, though it's interesting to hear the answer without that limitation). From what I could find, it seems that there are two viable options: Apache Tomcat and Sun Java Server. What are the reason to choose one on top of the other? what are the strength of each and what are the weaknesses? Or, perhaps, there is a third one which is much easier, flexible and less cumbersome. Anyone?
