  • Personalize Diff Command in Ubuntu

    - by acidboy
I have two files, both with a lot of data, what I need is compare the first word of each file (each file always starts with a number, and each number could have many digits). The files are identical when these numbers are the same. Example: I have 3 files: a.txt, b.txt and c.txt a.txt content is "1 a b c 3 5 6 hjkj" b.txt content is "1 c f a 1234 h" c.txt content is "2 a b c 3 5 6 hjkj" diff a.txt b.txt should return "files are identical" diff a.txt c.txt should return "files are different" How can I compare them using the diff command?

  • find out the origin of function calls

    - by user560343
Hi all, I wonder if there is a software that can help us determine all possible origins of a function call. For example: /* in file f1.c */ int f1() { x_func(); } /* in file f2.c */ int f2() { x_func(); } If we want to trace the origin of all function calls to x_func(), the output will be: f1.c:f1() f2.c:f2() This is very useful when reading the source code. All answers are appreciated. Thank in advance :D

This is the error I get when trying to run it: src/simpleshell.c:19:3: error: ‘table’ undeclared (first use in this function) src/simpleshell.c:19:3: note: each undeclared identifier is reported only once for each function it appears in My code is as follows: #include "parser.h" #include "hash_table.h" #include "variables.h" #include "shell.h" #include <stdio.h> int main(void) { char input[MAXINPUTLINE]; table = Table_create(); signal_c_init(); printf("\nhlsh$ "); while(fgets(input, sizeof(input), stdin)){ stripcrlf(input); parse(input); printf("\nhlsh$ "); } Table_free(table); return 0; } Then this is my create a table in the hash_table file: struct Table *Table_create(void){ struct Table *t; t = (struct Table*)calloc(1, sizeof(struct Table)); return t; } From the hash_table.c: #include "hash_table.h" #include "parser.h" #include "shell.h" #include "variables.h" #include <stdio.h> #include <sys/resource.h> #include <sys/wait.h> #include <sys/types.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <string.h> #include <unistd.h> #include <pwd.h> #include <fcntl.h> #include <limits.h> #include <signal.h> struct Table *table; unsigned int hash(const char *x){ int i; unsigned int h = 0U; for (i=0; x[i]!='\0'; i++){ h = h * 65599 + (unsigned char)x[i]; } return h % 1024; }

  • Calling variables to run scripts

    - by user1416419
I have a script that lists all files in a directory, lists them in alphabetical order, and places the number of the file before the filename. #!/bin/bash x=1 cd ~/bin for f in * do if [ -f $f ]; then echo "$x: $f" declare a$x=$f x=$(expr $x + 1) fi done read -p "What would you like to execute?: " num $num Output would be 1: file0 2: file1 3: file2 etc Running $num will execute the command a1 which is not a command. What I want to do is run what $a1 is equal to (ie file0). How can I do this?

  • monitor and kill runaway processes using 100% IO?

    - by bleomycin
Hello everyone, i have a few processes that have to be run at high priority (chrt 98) that will occasionally decide to hard-lock and peg 1 core at 100% (not a huge deal) but more importantly it will use all the IO on a system, so much that its impossible to log into the machine via ssh to kill it or perform any task on the machine that isn't loaded into ram. If i happen to have something like htop already running i am able to end the process fine. Is there any type of utility/way to monitor for this type of runaway process and kill anything that uses 100% of system IO for more than X amount of time? Thanks!

Thanks in advance ;)

  • Is Unix/Linux adoption a measure of developer skill? [closed]

    - by adeptsage
Is Linux/Unix based OS adoption for development (or recreation) a rough measure of the awareness, adaptability and/or skill of a developer, after considering factors like learning curve for effective code testing via the CLI, basic scripting, tweaking, etc. I have no intention of starting flame wars between Windows and Linux as better dev environments, and personal choice of OSes for dev, but what i do wish to know is that - will the level of adaptability of a person who uses a Unix based system be defined by the fact that he programs on a Unix based OS?

  • Linux is not an operating system, or is it?

  • How to redistribute binary programs built on modern Ubuntu so that they can be executed on any older Linux system ?

    - by psihodelia
I found that if I build any binary on Ubuntu 10.10, then it doesn't execute on some older Linuxes. It is because Ubuntu uses a very new C library, called EGLIBC. Most of the desktop Linux systems use GLIBC. I would like to know whether there is any standard method how to redistribute binary programs built on a modern Ubuntu so that they can be executed on any older Linux system ? How to find all required dependencies (glibc version, dynamic libraries) ?

If I boot my computer again, instead of select the first line in the boot menu, I select "previous linux version" and select one old version in the list then my computer boot fine. • How do I create statistics to make ‘small’ objects appear ‘large’ to the Optmizer?

    - by Maria Colgan
I recently spoke with a customer who has a development environment that is a tiny fraction of the size of their production environment. His team has been tasked with identifying problem SQL statements in this development environment before new code is released into production. The problem is the objects in the development environment are so small, the execution plans selected in the development environment rarely reflects what actually happens in production. To ensure the development environment accurately reflects production, in the eyes of the Optimizer, the statistics used in the development environment must be the same as the statistics used in production. This can be achieved by exporting the statistics from production and import them into the development environment. Even though the underlying objects are a fraction of the size of production, the Optimizer will see them as the same size and treat them the same way as it would in production. Below are the necessary steps to achieve this in their environment. I am using the SH sample schema as the application schema who's statistics we want to move from production to development. Step 1. Create a staging table, in the production environment, where the statistics can be stored Step 2. Export the statistics for the application schema, from the data dictionary in production, into the staging table Step 3. Create an Oracle directory on the production system where the export of the staging table will reside and grant the SH user the necessary privileges on it. Step 4. Export the staging table from production using data pump export Step 5. Copy the dump file containing the stating table from production to development Step 6. Create an Oracle directory on the development system where the export of the staging table resides and grant the SH user the necessary privileges on it.  Step 7. Import the staging table into the development environment using data pump import Step 8. Import the statistics from the staging table into the dictionary in the development environment. You can get a copy of the script I used to generate this post here. +Maria Colgan

  • What are the options for hosting a small Plone site?

    - by Tina Russell
I’ve developed a portfolio website for myself using Plone 4, and I’m looking for someplace to host it. Most Plone hosting services seem to focus on large, corporate deployments, but I need something that I can afford on a very limited budget and fits a small, single-admin website. My understanding is that my basic options are thus: I can go with a hosting service that specifically provides Plone. I know of WebFaction, but what others exist? Also, I’d have two stipulations for a Plone hosting service: (a) It needs to use Plone 4, for which I’ve developed my site, and (b) it needs to allow me SSH access to a home directory (including the Plone configuration), so that I may use my custom development eggs and such. I could use a VPS hosting service. What are my options here? Again, I need something cheap and scaled to my level. I could use Amazon EC2 or a similar service (please tell me of any) and pay by the tiniest unit of data. I’m a little scared of this because I have no idea how to do a cost-benefit analysis between this and a regular VPS host. The advantage of this approach would be that I only pay for what I use, making it very scalable, but I don’t know how the overall cost would compare to any VPS host under similar circumstances. What factors enter into the cost of Amazon EC2? What can I expect to pay under either option for regular traffic for a new website? Which one is more desirable for when a rush of visitors drive up my bandwidth bill? One last note: I know Plone isn’t common for websites for individuals, but please don’t try to talk me out of it here; that’s a completely different subject. For now, assume I’m sticking with Plone for good. Also, I have seen the Plone hosting services list on Plone.org—it’s twenty pages long, and the first page was nothing but professional Plone consulting services that sometimes offer hosting for business clients. So, that wasn’t much help. Thank you!

  • What is a good basic/flexible cms for a small website? [closed]

    - by Samuel
Possible Duplicate: Which Content Management System (CMS) should I use? I'm designing a very basic portfolio website for an artist. It features a blog, portfolio, cv and contact page. I've handcoded the basics of this site in php/java, as it is a very small website (and I like coding by hand). But I need a simple cms backend for the dynamic parts of the website (the blog/portfolio). The big systems (ruby, joomla, wordpress) are far too invasive for my liking (and frankly a bit beyond my capabilities). Wordpress for example, requires too much adaptation of the design to the wordpress structure, and ruby is far too extensive for a simple site like this (in my opinion). So what I'm looking for is a (preferably open source) cms that has a simple backend for the artist to use as a blogger, with a mysql database for the content, that will allow me to insert content with simple tags (using smarty tags for example), but is otherwise not too invasive or demanding in terms of the required page structure. Does anyone know of a good cms that fits this description? p.s.: I have tried phpnews and cmsmadesimple, but phpnews was a litte too basic (but very close too what I'm looking for) and cmsmadesimple was way too slow (but otherwise also pretty close too what I wanted, though a bit too extensive).
