• How should I debug a vb.net website in iis6 that is throwing 'Deadlock detected' errors and becomes

  A few times a day, our vb.net (IIS 6.0) website is randomly throwing the following error and becomes completely unavailable for 5-15 minutes at a time while the application is recycled: ISAPI 'c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_isapi.dll' reported itself as unhealthy for the following reason: 'Deadlock detected'. The website ran for months on the exact same server in beta without problem - but the problem started over the weekend when we made the site live. The live site is under some load but less than many of our other production websites. How should I attack this problem? I've looked into orphaning the worker process and creating a dump file - but I'm not sure how to analyze that. Any advice or information is appreciated. Thanks, Shane

  Hello, When you issue the command ls in Linux you get this sort of thing: drwxr--r-- 1 fred editors 4096 drafts -rw-r--r-- 1 fred editors 30405 file1.php -r-xr-xr-x 1 fred fred 8460 file2.php I know that the rwxrwxrwx are the read, write and execute permissions for the current user. And I think I know that 'fred' is the user who owns the file. So I assume fred can write to file1 but no one else can. But what is the extra bit 'editors' and what is the difference between file1 and file2 with respect to one having an ownership of 'fred editors' and the other 'fred fred'? Also if a web user connects to one of the files, what is their user name and where is this decided? If the server decided that user connecting from the web was going to be fred, does this mean any web user could write to file1? Any information welcomed, I am resaerching this but just getting confused. Thanks

• 7u45 Caller-Allowable-Codebase and Trusted-Library

  Java 7 update 45 (October 2013) changed the interactions between JavaScript and Java Applets made through LiveConnect. The 7u45 update is a critical patch update that has also raised the security baseline and users are strongly recommended to upgrade. Versions below the security baseline used to apply the Trusted-Library Manifest attribute to call between sandboxed code and higher-privileged code. The Trusted-Library value was a Boolean true or false. Security changes for the current security baseline (7u45) introduced a different Caller-Allowable-Codebase that indicates precisely where these LiveConnect calls can originate. For example, LiveConnect calls should not necessarily originate from 3rd party components of a web page or other DOM-based browser manipulations (pdf). Additional information about these can be located at “JAR File Manifest Attributes for Security.” The workaround for end-user dialogs is described on the 7u45 release notes, which explains removing the Trusted-Library attribute for LiveConnect calls in favor of Caller-Allowable-Codebase. This provides necessary protections (without warnings) for all users at or above the security baseline. Client installations automatically detect updates to the secure baseline and prompt users to upgrade. Warning dialogs above or below Both of these attributes should work together to support the various versions of client installations. We are aware of the issue that modifying the Manifest to use the newer Caller-Allowable-Codebase causes warnings for users below the security baseline and that not doing it displays a warning for users above. Manifest Attribute 7u45 7u40 and below Only Caller-Allowable-Codebase No dialog Displays prompt Only Trusted-Library Displays prompt No dialog Both Displays prompt (*) No dialog This will be fixed in a future release so that both attributes can co-exist. The current work-around would be to favor using Caller-Allowable-Codebase over the old Trusted-Library call. For users who need to stay below the security baseline System Administrators that schedule software deployments across managed computers may consider applying a Deployment Rule Set as described in Option 1 of “What to do if your applet is blocked or warns of mixed code.” System Administrators may also sign up for email notifications of Critical Patch Updates.

• Guidance: How to layout you files for an Ideal Solution

  Creating a solution and having it maintainable over time is an art and not a science. I like being pedantic and having a place for everything, no matter how small. For setting up the Areas to run Multiple projects under one solution see my post on  When should I use Areas in TFS instead of Team Projects and for an explanation of branching see Guidance: A Branching strategy for Scrum Teams. Update 17th May 2010 – We are currently trialling running a single Sprint branch to improve our history. Whenever I setup a new Team Project I implement the basic version control structure. I put “readme.txt” files in the folder structure explaining the different levels, and a solution file called “[Client].[Product].sln” located at “$/[Client]/[Product]/DEV/Main” within version control. Developers should add any projects you need to create to that solution in the format “[Client].[Product].[ProductArea].[Assembly]” and they will automatically be picked up and built automatically when you setup Automated Builds using Team Foundation Build. All test projects need to be done using MSTest to get proper IDE and Team Foundation Build integration out-of-the-box and be named for the assembly that it is testing with a naming convention of “[Client].[Product].[ProductArea].[Assembly].Tests” Here is a description of the folder layout; this content should be replicated in readme files under version control in the relevant locations so that even developers new to the project can see how to do it. Figure: The Team Project level - at this level there should be a folder for each the products that you are building if you are using Areas correctly in TFS 2010. You should try very hard to avoided spaces as these things always end up in a URL eventually e.g. "Code Auditor" should be "CodeAuditor". Figure: Product Level - At this level there should be only 3 folders (DEV, RELESE and SAFE) all of which should be in capitals. These folders represent the three stages of your application production line. Each of them may contain multiple branches but this format leaves all of your branches at the same level. Figure: The DEV folder is where all of the Development branches reside. The DEV folder will contain the "Main" branch and all feature branches is they are being used. The DEV designation specifies that all code in every branch under this folder has not been released or made ready for release. And feature branches MUST merge (Forward Integrate) from Main and stabilise prior to merging (Reverse Integration) back down into Main and being decommissioned. Figure: In the Feature branching scenario only merges are allowed onto Main, no development can be done there. Once we have a mature product it is important that new features being developed in parallel are kept separate. This would most likely be used if we had more than one Scrum team working on a single product. Figure: when we are ready to do a release of our software we will create a release branch that is then stabilised prior to deployment. This protects the serviceability of of our released code allowing developers to fix bugs and re-release an existing version. Figure: All bugs found on a release are fixed on the release.  All bugs found in a release are fixed on the release and a new deployment is created. After the deployment is created the bug fixes are then merged (Reverse Integration) into the Main branch. We do this so that we separate out our development from our production ready code.  Figure: SAFE or RTM is a read only record of what you actually released. Labels are not immutable so are useless in this circumstance.  When we have completed stabilisation of the release branch and we are ready to deploy to production we create a read-only copy of the code for reference. In some cases this could be a regulatory concern, but in most cases it protects the company building the product from legal entanglements based on what you did or did not release. Figure: This allows us to reference any particular version of our application that was ever shipped.   In addition I am an advocate of having a single solution with all the Project folders directly under the “Trunk”/”Main” folder and using the full name for the project folders.. Figure: The ideal solution If you must have multiple solutions, because you need to use more than one version of Visual Studio, name the solutions “[Client].[Product][VSVersion].sln” and have it reside in the same folder as the other solution. This makes it easier for Automated build and improves the discoverability of your code and its dependencies. • Graphics Startup Screen

  Specs: AMD Athlon XP 2400+ @ 1987 MHz / 2x 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM / 160GB IDE HDD / 128MB GeForce 6200 AGP / FIC AM37 / Windows XP Pro SP3 So, every time I start up my machine, there's a startup screen for the graphics card. It should display "NVIDIA GeForce 6200 VGA BIOS" with some other copyright information underneath it. However, it randomly changed to say "NV44A VGA BIOS." I think the GeForce 6200 codename is NV44A or something, but is there someway to change it back to say "GeForce 6200 VGA BIOS" or, if not, to completely stop it from showing upon startup? (Graphics drivers are all up to date.) Thanks in advance.

• Ubuntu 13.10 Installing MariaDB when Apt reports MariaDB has unmet dependencies or broken packages

  I have tried everything to install MariaDB on this clean Ubuntu installation but I keep getting this error, Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: mariadb-server : Depends: mariadb-server-5.5 (= 5.5.33a+maria-1~saucy) but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. I have followed this guide to try and install it, http://www.unixmen.com/install-lemp-server-nginx-mysql-mariadb-php-ubuntu-13-10-server/ And I have also followed the "official" guide on the MariaDB downloads page for 13.10 https://downloads.mariadb.org/mariadb/repositories/ But nothing seems to be working. Edit 1 I have tried both How do I resolve unmet dependencies? and How to install MariaDB? but it still gives me the error I posted above. It's a fresh Ubuntu install with hardly anything installed. Edit 2 All the check boxes are ticket in Updates.   I'm trying to find information how do we take a screenshot on Windows 7 that will actually create a screenshot file like .png in to your desktop like on mac where you can do it by press Command+Control+Shift+4. In windows all I know is that I can do it by press press = Windows captures the entire screen and copies it to the clipboard. or for the Active windows I can just do hold and press = Windows captures only the currently active window and copies it to the clipboard. Right now I'm using maComFort which it gives me functionality of Mac like keyboard that I can take screenshot in such the same way with Mac OS X but really it changes many of the key in my keyboard in the way I don't like. So I wonder if there is a better way?

  I am going to implement Nagios (most likely anyway, could turn out to be another tool as well) and I was wondering if anyone would like to share their best practices when it comes to creating, managing and maintaining the config files when it comes to scalability and managability as I find that it might quickly become a real big mess. Any tips, examples or even full configurations would be most welcome and I'd happily look them over. Tools would be welcome as well. Tried out NConf so far, but the generated config files don't seem to do what was promised (not including the parent information for one, and just a PITA to get them working - they generate a ton of errors when checking the config files with the script supplied by nagios) Thanks

  I've written a script which updates an environment variable, but I need to tell Program Manager to update the computer's programs with this new information. • CloudFormation - How to start a Windows Service with cfn-init

  I'm creating a CloudFormation Stack that will install and start a service on a Windows Instance. I've figured out how to install the service, but how do I start the service using cfn-init? The examples seem to all use linux, as there is a reference to "sysvinit" How do I structure AWS::CloudFormation::Init so that cfn-init will start windows services after installing them? Do I leave in the sysvinit, replace it with something else, take it out? ps: I'm referring to how to start services by providing information to AWS::CloudFormation::Init.services. Also, It would be nice to know how "packages" work for windows. AWS's announcemnet says that packages are supported on Windows but there is no Windows specific documentation

• How to get Broadcom BCM 43XX Wireless card working

  NOTE - Although this question is for a specific version of Ubuntu and a specific Broadcom model, the answer to it is for most Broadcom models and versions of Ubuntu 11.04, 11.10, 12.04 and 12.10. If you have come here from another question, feel free to read the answer instead. The answer covers many problems with several solutions. I'm having serious problems installing the Broadcom drivers for Ubuntu 11.04. It worked perfectly on my previous version, but now, it is impossible. I'm a user with no advance knowledge in Linux, so I would need clear explanations on make, compile, etc. I was following the instructions on the following blog, with no luck. How can I get Broadcom BCM4311 Wireless working? Can someone help me? Edit: For the command: "lspci | grep Network", I get the following message: 06:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN (rev 01) For the command: iwconfig, i get the following: lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. When i follow the following steps (from the above link), there are a NO error message at all: open the 'Synaptic Package Manager' and search for bcm uninstall the bcm-kernel-source package make sure that the firmware-b43-installer and the b43-fwcutter packages are installed type into terminal: cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep '8180|acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|witch|wl' (you may want to copy this) and see if the term blacklist bcm43xx is there if it is, type cd /etc/modprobe.d/ and then sudo gedit blacklist.conf put a # in front of the line: blacklist bcm43xx then save the file (I was getting error messages in the terminal about not being able to save, but it actually did save properly). reboot 'End of procedure' Before (not ubuntu 11.04), if i wanted to connect wireles, i just went to the icon at the upper side of the screen, click, showed ALL the wireless network available, and done. Now, the only options i see are: Wired Network Auto Eth0 Disconnect VPN Enable networking Connection information Edit connection. hope above info is enough for your help.

• Is it possible to format ps RSS (memory) output to be more human friendly?

  Executing ps ux returns a nice list of process information, easy to grep through or watch. However, there doesn't seem to be much flexibility in the memory usage output; the RSS (resident set size) is printed in kB, which for large processes is hard to read (especially at a glance), and %MEM gives 100 × RSS / system_memory. The du utility has a lovely -h flag which prints space in a more user friendly fashion. I have not been able to find anything equivalent for ps. Is there a special formatting trick that can accomplish this?

• A story from SQLvdb and Idera

  A year or so back, I struggled with some consistency problems so I figured out I needed a way to "mount" backup files as a virtual database. At the time (SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008) my choice fell on Idera's SQLvdb because it felt easy enough to use. I used it a few times and it worked great. Some time later we upgraded to SQL Server 2008R2 and I didn't use SQLvbd for a long time. Until yesterday... I was upset that suddenly SQLvbd took more than 2 hours to mount the backup file (if it succeeded at all). I uninstalled the application and went for lunch. After lunch, I decided to give SQLvbd another chance so I emailed their tech support and got a response within 30 minutes or so. Now, since I am a SQL Server MVP, they gave me another serial number than my first and I downloaded and installed a newer version. But also this version was really slow. I emailed back to them with the additional information they requested and to my surprise I had got an email this morning when I came back to work, where Idera explained some of the issues (bugs) and asked my to test a newer version. I did, and now a fresh mount of a 100GB database (compressed to 20GB with native compression) located on our SAN takes less than 6 minutes! Thank you. //Peter

  In my last posting about code contracts I showed how code contracts are documented in XML-documents. In this posting I will show you how to get code contracts documented with Sandcastle and Sandcastle Help File Builder. Before we start, let’s download Sandcastle tools we need: Sandcastle Sandcastle Help File Builder Install Sandcastle first and then Sandcastle Help File Builder. Because we are generating only HTML based documentation we upload to server we don’t need any other tools. Of course, we need Cassini or IIS, but I expect it to be already there in your machine. Open your project and turn on XML-documentation for project and contracts. Now let’s run Sandcastle Help File Builder. We have to create new project and add our Visual Studio solution to this project. Now set the HelpFileFormat parameter value to be Website and let builder build the help. You have to wait about two or three minutes until help is ready. Take a look at your documentation that Sandcastle generated – you see not much information there about code contracts and their rules. Enabling code contracts documentation Now let’s include code contracts to documentation. Follow these steps: Open Sandcastle folder and make copy of vs2005 folder. Open CodeContracts folder (c:\program files\microsoft\contracts\) and unzip the archive from sandcastle folder. Copy all unzipped files to Sandcastle folder. Create (yes, create new) and build your Sandcastle Help File Builder documentation project again. Open help. In my case I see something like this now. As you can see then contracts are documented pretty well. We can easily turn on code contracts XML-documentation generation and all our contracts are documented automatically. To get documentation work we had to use Sandcastle help file fixes that are installed with code contracts and if we had previously Sandcastle Help File Builder project we had to create it from start to get new rules accepted. Once the documentation support for contracts works we have to do nothing more to get contracts documented.

So with that experience of a complex event under my belt I decided to refresh my acquaintance with Oracle Event Processing (CEP). CEP has a developer side based on Eclipse and a runtime environment. Server install The server install is very straightforward (documentation). It is recommended to use the JRockit JDK with CEP so the steps to set up a working CEP server environment are: Download required software JRockit - I used Oracle “JRockit 6 - R28.2.5” which includes “JRockit Mission Control 4.1” and “JRockit Real Time 4.1”. Oracle Event Processor - I used “Complex Event Processing Release 11gR1 (11.1.1.6.0)” Install JRockit Run the JRockit installer, the download is an executable binary that just needs to be marked as executable. Install CEP Unzip the downloaded file Run the CEP installer, the unzipped file is an executable binary that may need to be marked as executable. Choose a custom install and add the examples if needed. It is not recommended to add the examples to a production environment but they can be helpful in development. Developer Install The developer install requires several steps (documentation). • Oracle licensing /pricing ?

  Question: I'd like to download Oracle 11g database for evaluation purposes. Now I found this link for downloads: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/enterprise-edition/downloads/index.html But it says one must register 'for accessing premium contents'. But in the same time, it looks like one can download the full database for free. But surely, Oracle doesn't give it for free, but in the registration, there's no mention of any cost/fees, or any billing address. Is this registration free, or as 'premium' suggests, will you get a bill for it if you do (supposed you enter true data) ? Or how does Oracle handle licensing/payment ? I can not see any price tag there anywhere, nor any information on it on that registration page.

  Possible Duplicate: Tell the version of Windows XP (64-bits or 32-bits) Is it possible to determine whether a given installation of Windows is 32- or 64-bit? From right-clicking on My Computer, and selecting Properties, it appears that such information is not readily available. Typing ver at the command prompt also doesn't seem to return anything about the nature of the platform in which it is installed. Under Linux, I'd use uname -a to find out what kernel was running. Is there an analog on Windows?

• Ignore Partial Upgrade -- Google Earth Dependencies

  I'm running a 64-bit install of Xubuntu 12.04. It took me a little while to get Google Earth working. The 64-bit Google earth package requires some 32-bit gtk libraries provided by ia32-libs. However, when I ran a simulation to install ia32-libs and it's dependencies, it wanted to remove a ton of programs, including the xubuntu-desktop meta-package. As a work-around, I used getlibs to get the 32-bit libraries I needed, and then installed Google Earth with the deb package and the --ignore-depend option to dpkg. Awesome, Google Earth is installed and is working great! Now, however, Update Manager keeps complaining about a "Partial Upgrade", and apt-get won't let me install any new applications. It wants me to do a fix-broken install, but when I do a simulation of apt-get -f install I get some very bad news, they want to uninstall the Google Earth I just worked so hard to install! $> apt-get -f -s install Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Correcting dependencies... Done The following packages will be REMOVED: googleearth 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Remv googleearth [6.0.3.2197+0.7.0-1] TL;DR The --ignore-depends passed to dpkg is not propagating to apt-get, so now I can't install any new applications until I uninstall Google Earth, because of it's missing dependencies (even though it works fine without them). How can I fix this?

• DB2 LUW tools for diagnosing issues when the stuff hits the fan

  I am no DBA and very much a novice when it comes to DB2 so even 'obvious' answers are welcome to this question: I love db2top but sometimes I cannot get it to run if the load average is high on a db2 LUW. This morning I was looking at an issue where load average shot up suddenly, I could not get db2top to come up and I needed to find out what was happening. What can I do to find out who is doing what in this situation? I suspected a horribly bad query was being run by someone...is there a good way to find information on poor performing SQL on the fly in that type of situation? Are there any good ways to collect good, actionable stats who/where bad sql is coming from in the event that load average is so high? I know about db2pd but I am not sure how to use it effectively and slogging through tens of thousands of lines of raw data is probably not the most efficient way to get at the heart of a problem. Any tips or resources?
