  I'm writing an app that does something like a custom number (licence) place generator tool where if I ask for the plate "robin" it will suggest I try: r0bin rob1n r0b1n Are there any published algorithms which can do this? It has to be able to handle replacing single letters with multiples, e.g. m with rn and vise-versa and not fall over if it replaces an i with an l then comes to check the l and replaces it back to an i. The list of what gets swapped with what is going to be user input but I'm not expecting a huge list, possibly 10 pairs at most. I'll be implementing this in Ruby or Python but I should be able to convert code from any other language.

  I have an Oracle background. It was interesting to see how rollback handled in Oracle and SQL Server. There is no begin trans in Oracle.  What oracle does is it will store the data in a temporary area called the rollback segments. Untill your issue the commit command the records will be kept there. You can even rollback your update statement by issuing the rollback command. When you issue the commit command the records in the rollback segments are written to the redo log files. The same logic for insert is also applicable except that there is no mirror image of the record kept.   In SQL Server, if you want to be able to roll back statement, you neet to start your statement with a "begin tran" . Then, you can rollback a transaction, if this is needed. begin tran update Person set FirstName = 'Arthur' where PersonId = 10 -- select firstname from Person rollback

• update-grub2 not finding windows7 partition..

  I have Ubuntu10.10 x64 and after installing Windows 7 grub dissapear I log on with my usb to reinstall grub and now grub only shows Ubuntu... Then when I try to do update-grub2 I get this: root@Alienware:~# sudo update-grub2 Generating grub.cfg ...   A great new feature in VirtualBox 4.0 is the ability to use NAT networking and forward ports without needing to use ssh -L/-R tricks.  This is great for booting multiple VM domains simultaneously.  It is possible to have several instances which map back to the host machine and different ports on localhost:* automatically forward to the correct VM.  This avoids the hassle of setting up dns entries or static IP addresses.In this example, I'm mapping the host ports 3xxxx to the VM's well known server ports.Note: It is important to setup the Frontend HTTP host/port to avoid incorrect URL rewriting.You may also need to setup an http channel to deal with local traffic which uses the network address 10.0.2.15Happy VMing.

  Before patching scuttle or semanticscuttle I thought I'd ask if anyone knows of a lighter-weight/faster system to tag bookmarks and vote on them? LAMP is fine. Ideally, I should be allowed to interfere with the database directly. My actual problem is I want to administer roughly 80m bookmarks, tag them, vote on them (it's just 10 users accessing the system), but here's the thing: All of those bookmarks will change their descriptions (and title lines) at least once a day. Both systems support the del.icio.us API but my LAMP stack is unable to cope with the load.

• How do I allow full brightness control on Unity?

  When I use the brightness changing buttons Unity changes the brightness by two levels each time to create a nice effect. However, I only have about 10 different brightness settings and so this effect has caused a reduction in brightness settings to 5. I change my brightness regularly to suit the lighting in the room I'm in, but am unable to do this so effectively now that the number of levels has been reduced. Is there any way of turning off this brightness effect and controlling my brightness setting more sensitively? Thank you for your time. EDIT: It may not be 2 levels it changes at a time but 3, I've worked this out as the brightness control panel allows you to set the brightness accurately and there seem to be a couple of settings that the button misses completely when I change the brightness with the buttons.

• Installing Ubuntu on virtualbox with a windows 8 host

  Installing ubuntu-13.10-desktop-i386.iso gets me to the graphical login screen but after I enter the password I get a black screen. Ctrl-Alt-F2 brings me to a terminal where I can restart lightdm, enter my password again to see another black screen. The screen saver can actually kick into action there and I was told to update packages, but no unity or other ui, just blackenss. The host is windows8-x64 and Virtualbox 4.3.2. I tried installing ubuntu-12.04.3-desktop-i386.iso but that hung during setup. Is there a way to debug? I'm now trying to install Debian to see if that works but wow the network installer takes its sweet time... Update: Debian does work though it gives me a notification that Gnome 3 failed to load. The visual desktop works though so I don't know if there was a substantive problem.

  I am a COBOL programmer, desperately trying to learn and program Java. Although I understand the OO priciples and concepts, I am at a lost putting all together. I am trying to find some examples on how code will look in COBOL vs Java - something a bit more complicated than "hello world" [I am past that initial headache! :-)], that includes OO principles - basically, a decent 1000+ liner in COBOL, with the Java code to work through. After working through book after book, doing the examples, and even writing small java programs at work, I think working through an example I can compare will be the best way to getting my thinking cap converted, and being able to do in Java what I can do after 10 years with COBOL.   I am trying to build a business around an iPhone app. The app will be our main sales channel, and being able to adapt the sales channel faster than the 9-10 days delay cause by the app review times is crucial. Therefore, I was wondering whether there is anything I can do to improve the speed of reviews. I am thinking that the publishers of Angry Birds, surely would not have to wait in line for reviews on the same terms as some obscure free app. So what can I do? Some things I am considering: Would Apple prioritize apps that they earn money on? Could I in some way pay Apple directly? I already know of the possibility of requesting an expedite review, but it seems like one can get punished for supplying a non-technical reason.

  So I recently installed Ubuntu on my Acer Aspire V3-551 laptop. I have an Atheros AR5BWB222 wireless adapter. Everything works fine except for the wireless. I can sometimes connect to the wireless, but most of the time it will be making an attempt to connect and then enver connect. Or it will connect, but it will only stay connected for about 10 seconds before getting disconnected from the wireless. All the other drivers updated through System SettingsAdditional Drivers are fine, even the Ethernet. Its just the problem with the wireless. I've tried a power managment setting, tried looking for additional updates, but nothing fixes my problem. Is there any solution for my particular wireless card?

  I just installed Oneiric on a SAMSUNG NP300V3A (Series 3) laptop. Everything seems to work fine more or less except one thing: I can't reduce screen brightness more than 10% or so. Fn+F3 (brightness up) sets brightness to 100% and Fn+F2 (brightness down) sets it to about 90% or so. No matter how many more times I press it, it doesn't fall below that. For a video card I have an integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 chipset, but that's probably unrelated to the issue. What can I do to solve this?

• UEC - Unable to SSH into instance, asks for password

  I am attempting to set up a private cloud using Ubuntu 10.04.4 Server. I am following the tutorial at http://cssoss.wordpress.com/2010/11/26/eucabook-v1-1/ . All steps go on perfectly apart from that I am unable to SSH into the running instances. I have created the instance using a public key and try to SSH into instance using the private key. However it asks for password. I am able to ping the instance though. I have tried using both the pre-built images from the store as well as custom built images. Several people seem to have the same problem but there does not seem to be any working solution. Thanks in advance.
