You had to sysprep the VM, and clone the data disks. This was slow, prone to errors, and stopped you from being productive. No more! A new option, called Capture, allows you to easily select a VM, running or not. The capture will copy the OS disk and data disks and create a new image out of it automatically for you. This means you can now easily clone an entire VM without affecting productivity.  To capture a VM, simply browse to your Virtual Machines in the Microsoft Azure management website, select the VM you want to clone, and click on the Capture button at the bottom. A window will come up asking to name your image. It took less than 1 minute for me to build a clone of my server. And because it is stored as an image, I can easily create a new VM with it. So that’s what I did… And that took about 5 minutes total.  That’s amazing…  To create a new VM from your image, click on the NEW icon (bottom left), select Compute/Virtual Machine/From Gallery, and select My Images from the left menu when selecting an Image. You will find your newly created image. Because this is a clone, you will not be prompted for a new login; the user id/password is the same. • How to set up a file server in a restricted corporate environment

  I work in a big corporation, and the disk space my team gets in the corporate file server is so low, I am considering turning my work PC into a file server. I ask this community for links to tutorials, software suggestions, and advice in general about how to set it up. My machine is an Intel Core2Duo E7500 @ 3GHz, 3 GB of RAM, Running Windows XP Service Pack 3. Upgrading, formatting or installing another OS is out of the question. But I do have Administrator priviledges on the PC, and I can install programs (at least for now). A lot of security software I don't even know about is and must remain installed. But I only need communication whithin the corporate network, which is not restricted. People have usernames (logins) on the corporate network, and I need to use them to restrict access. Simply put, I have a list of logins of team members, and only people in the list should access the files. I have about 150 GB of free disk space. I'm thinking of allocating 100 GB to the team's shared files. I plan monthly backups on machines of co-workers, same configuration. But automation of backups is a nice, unnecessary feature: it's totally acceptable for me to manually copy the contents to a different machine once a month. Uptime is important, as everyone would use these files in their daily work. I have experience as a python and C programmer, but no experience whatsoever as a sysadmin, and almost nothing of my programming experience is network programming. I'm a complete beginner in this. Thanks in advance for any help. EDIT I honestly appreciate all the warnings, I really do, but what I plan to make available is mostly stuff that now is solely on DVDs just for space reasons. It's 'daily work' to read them, but 'daily work write' files will remain on the corporate server. As for the importance of uptime, I think I overstated it: a few outages are OK, it's already an improvement over getting the DVDs. As for policy, my manager is kind of on my side, I will confirm that before making my move. As for getting more space through the proper channels, well, that was Plan A, and it's still on the table... But I don't have much hope. I'm not as "core businees" as I'd like.

• NT4 server generate too much weird DNS queries, How can i see the source PID?

  I have a NT4 server that in the last two weeks started to generate too many weird DNS queries to the DNS server is set to use. I have got warnings from the IPS system that it has blocked the responses from the DNS server back to the NT4 server. The queries it generate doesn't relate to any computer in the network, it is like 120624100088.xxxxxxx.net where xxx is the internal network, the numbers are just random at each query. I have done some research on how to get the PID that is generating the queries, and i found that only Process Monitor could give me that information, but since it is NT4 system Process Monitor doesn't work on it. It is a production server and i am just can't stop services as i want. I would like to get your advice on how can i get the PID that is generating these queries? Thanks.

• Ubuntu 10.04 Cant Adjust brightness on my lenevo Thinkpad?

  I cant seem to be able to adjust the brightness on my think-pad laptop running Ubuntu 10.04. In the power management applet it shows that the power is set to 100%, but even if i try to lower it the actual screen brightness dosent change. Any ideas of how I can get around this? I tried changing the brightness from the terminal but its already set to Max brightness (however the actual screen brightness is no that bright at all). Thanks

  I administer a small network (10 users). I'm getting ready to deploy a internal webapp that will be hosted and accessed locally only. There are about 10 users on the network (192.168.111.0/24), a win2k3 server, apache (RHEL), and Mysql (RHEL), and various miscellaneous peripheries. I'd like to isolate the apache and sql boxes into a seperate area of the lan to keep things easier to maintain/grow. I've been reading about vlans, subnets, etc.. I'm not clear, however, which would be the best solution for our setup. Thanks for any tips and or advice.

  Plenty of exciting trends in the industry today: Cloud, Big Data, Mobile, etc. The first two are amazing of course, but for me, it's mobile, mobile and... MOBILE.   Why? Think back to the mozilla browser (Marc Andreessen's mozilla, not today's mozilla.org), Netscape and the nascent beginnings of the World Wide Web. Amazing times. Companies were just starting to set up their home pages, basic HTML, hyperlinks, images, ooooh, aaaah.  Yahoo! was *the* search engine back then. :-\   Anywhoo, I would pose that mobile today, we are in a similar junction. Sure, there's millions of apps on Apple's App Store and Google Play, but within the enterprise, it's just getting started. I'm talking about going beyond the simple, tactical apps such as calendaring, contacts or directory service lookup. And while mobile first a common mantra, I'm referring to mobile plus which includes and looks upon the whole enterprise holistically and adds new parameters, such as your GPS location, perhaps even your vital signs. (Apple's health kit?)  Everything is going mobile. Everything connected. But with the enterprise - scalability, security, integration, app management, user management, etc. Amazing times ahead. Ok, got that off my mind. Oracle OpenWorld 2014 - Going Mobile!  If you're coming to the big dance, I've highlighted some key mobile sessions below. And if you see me around, and there's a bar within reach, high five me for a beer. • Will disabling NAT on my wireless router cause a performance hit on my DSL router?

  I have a Thomson TG508v2 router/modem and a brand new AirPort Extreme connected to it. At first, I set the AirPort Extreme to "share a public IP", which enables DHCP/NAT. Everything works great but I was having the Double NAT error. So I set the AirPort Extreme as bridge mode, which disables DHCP/NAT and let my crappy modem handle my internal network IPs. Will this cause any performance hit in my network? I'm worried because I'll outsource this job from AirPort Extreme (premium hardware) to the crappy modem. Before you suggest, I tried setting my modem as a bridge and configuring PPPoE on the AirPort Extreme, however it wouldn't connect to the internet, so I just dismissed leaving the modem as bridge.

This network currently has a server (Windows Server 2008R2) running RRAS that establishes connectivity to the internet using a demand-dial PPPoE connection and handles the NAT. It also hosts a DNS server and DHCP. My ISP does not support IPv6, but I have a static IPv4 address. I've read about 6to4 and signed up at tunnelbroker.net, but quickly felt out of my depth. • Can a switch consume bandwidth?

  I have a network with a router and a switch. At first my ISP's optical fiber is connected with media converter input port. Than Ethernet cable (output port of Media converter) is connected with the switch. Then an output Ethernet cable is connected with our inner Microtik router. Then this router is connected with another LAN switch. From this switch we have got every connection other switch. It is our total network structure. Our bandwidth is 2 Mbps. From the 11th of March our MRTG graph shows high all the time even when my all switch is switched off except LAN switch. That's why our line is breaking up (Voice call). How could be it possible? My all PC's bandwidth is limited but when connected PC with media converter directly then the graph shows normal. That's why I can't blame my ISP.

• Windows 8.1 killed my wifi

  Was running Windows 8 on a Lenovo G780 and updated to windows 8.1 Wifi does not work anymore, i always receive a dns server not responding error. I have tried using public dns servers from Google but with still no results. I've restarted my router with no results. All other devices on my network are having no trouble at all. I've tried updating the wireless driver but the manufacturers website claims that the Win8.1 driver should be updated with the update from windows. So i cant find a wireless driver... Anyone else having this error and does anyone have any ideas on how to fix it?? • There's IP but can't reach gateway

  I have just installed ubuntu 12.04 on my new laptop, and brought it back to home, but I found the wireless network does not work. Strangely, it has the correct ip, but can't connect to the gateway. ifconfig gives ip 192.168.64.36, with broadcast 192.168.79.255 and mask 255.255.240.0, this are all correct, the gateway is at 192.168.64.1 cat /etc/resolv.conf nameserver 192.168.64.1 nameserver 127.0.0.1 which i think it's also right. but when I ping 192.168.64.1, all packages are lost. Please help me with this, I really do not know what happened to my network settings. Now i have a NAS in my network an i can connect with it trough my server but only if i am on the administrator account. My own account is in the administrators group but can't establish a connection with the NAS unless the administrator account has already connected. How do i make my own account connect with the NAS without first connecting with the admin account. • apt-get update stuck on "Waiting for Headers"

  I'm setting up a Maverick server on a spare PC. The install completes fine and the system boots up into the shell. However, when I try to do a apt-get update , apt hangs on almost every entry with the message 99% [Waiting for headers] sometimes a message of 96 b/s appears on the far right. The actual percent that it claims also varies. Searching around online gave a potential solution by using the option Acquire::http::Pipeline-Depth="0" this somewhat alleviates the problem, i.e. it stalls on every other entry with the same message as above. If you wait it out (the whole update took about 4 hours), the update still fails as a good portion of the hits show a "unable to connect" or similar message, despite the fact that I can ping the server from the pc just fine. The problem is also unrelated to the mirror used since I've tried about a dozen mirrors with no success, I've even tried commenting out everything but the main entry in sources.list and it still refuses to update. The network connection is fine since I can ping and wget (apt won't let me install lynx until I run a successful update) just fine. I've also reinstalled the distro with no luck. The only thing weird about the setup is that the PC is connecting to the internet through my windows laptop with ICS configured properly, but as I've said before, the network connection is fine.

• Problem with internet connection

  Hi all, I am working on windows vista. I have got two internet connections, one is wifi connection with high speed. And other is mobile network connection. There is a very strange problem I am getting. When I connect to wi-fi connection I an not able to serf internet(actually not all the sites). I am able to search on Google but when i click on any link in the search list it does not open. But I am able to serf all the pages in google.com domain and also all the pages in stackoverflow domain. But i am not able to go to page http://repo1.maven.org/maven2 But When I am connected by my mobile network. I am able to serf any site. Can you please tell me what might me the problem with my settings.

• Can only access asp.net app on localhost

  I'm trying to get an asp.net application up on IIS on a Windows Server 2008 machine. I can hit the app from localhost, no problem. But I can't access the app using the server's domain name either locally or from another machine on the network. But here's the odd part. I can access a normal file on IIS using the domain name, both from a browser running on the server and from a browser running on another machine on the network. Here's a synopsis ("http" converted to "htp" below because I don't have enough points to have all these links in my message): From IE on the server itself: works htp://localhost/foo.htm works htp://localhost/App works htp://test.foo.com/foo.htm dead htp://test.foo.com/App From IE on another machine (inside or outside my subnet): works htp://test.foo.com/foo.htm dead htp://test.foo.com/App And when I say "dead" I mean the request times out. Any ideas?

• nodejs server hanging from time to time

  I have a node server (0.6.6) running an Express application, along with Mongoose and s3, on an Ubuntu 11.04 machine. Several times per hour, the server is hanging. That means that the application is working fine, I see the express loggings, and then all of a sudden the server stops responding. No errors, no traces, no loggings, and strangely enough the browser won't show the request even in the network debugging window. From any machine in the local network it's the same behaviour. I restart the server and it's okay again for several minutes, then again starts to hang, everytime while doing something different. The same application on Amazon on the same Ubuntu version works fine and never hangs. I know all this is kind of vague, but I don't know where to start. Has any of you seen something like this before? Any idea?

• postfix, webmin installed. whats next?

  Im trying to get imap running and dont know the problem. i a developer, not a network guy.( our network guy left) we had postfix installed already for outgoing mail on 8 domains. we only had incoming on 1 domain. but that mail server is located on a different ip. now we want incoming on another domain, but we dont want it on another ip, we want it on the same ip as the website itself. I installed dovecot today because my hosting company said i needed it. it seems to run fine. do i need dovecot AND postfix? or are they the same thing? dovecot does not show up anywhere in webmin what i cant seem to figure out how to do is add a user email so i can try to telnet in on port 143. i think i have evrything installed, just need the next step.... sorry for the newb question
