• How to Setting up Amazon EC2 with own OS and DB?

  i got my own version of OS and DB which are window server 2008 Hyper-V R2 and Sql server R2 2008 both in enterprise version may i know how to configure it up and running ? with amazon EC2, what other is a must combination to make it run ? also how could i install the operating system and DNS ? i never doing server before, but i just need something like VPS to support my development and testing. • Using Windows 7 XP Mode for games

  Hi all. I have Win 7 (x64) at home and I want to play some old games (specifically Lands of Lore 3, but also some others). This game does not work properly on Win 7, and there are no patches that I'm aware of to fix its issues. Can I use XP Mode to play this game (and other non Win 7 nice games), or is there a better way? I only have one PC and dual booting scares me... (so no to dual booting!) Another question: Will I have full hardware support (full use of my graphics card, etc) when I use DOSbox or a VM? I have decided to go with VirtualBox or vmware, I'll check which one gives the best performance, thanks for your input!

• Do you tend to write your own name or your company name in your code?

  I've been working on various projects at home and at work, and over the years I've developed two main APIs that I use in almost all AJAX based websites. I've compiled both of these into DLLs and called the namespaces Connell.Database and Connell.Json. My boss recently saw these namespaces in a software documentation for a project for the company and said I shouldn't be using my own name in the code. (But it's my code!) One thing to bear in mind is that we're not a software company. We're an IT support company, and I'm the only full-time software developer here, so there's not really any procedures on how we should write software in the company. Another thing to bear in mind is that I do intend on one day releasing these DLLs as open-source projects. How do other developers group their namespaces within their company? Does anyone use the same class libraries in personal and in work projects? Also does this work the other way round? If I write a class library entirely at work, who owns that code? If I've seen the library through from start to finish, designed it and programmed it. Can I use that for another project at home? Thanks, Update I've spoken to my boss about this issue and he agrees that they're my objects and he's fine for me to open-source them. Before this conversation I started changing the objects anyway, which was actually quite productive and the code now suits this specific project more-so than it did previously. • What disk setup is needed / best practice for hypervisor-only servers?

  Planning to buy some servers to run an hypervisor (Citrix XenServer or VMware vSphere, still have to decide between the two) we'd like to boot off the local redundant SD card module offered by various vendors (eg. Dell, HP, etc...). The actual VMs will run from an existing iSCSI SAN (which, by the way, can't support booting the servers directly off the SAN). What are the reasons, if any, to choose completely diskless servers VS having some local storage? And what would be the guidelines to choose that local storage? (number of spindles, raid level, etc)

So, I tried copying an image from web and paste into desktop Word, and paste the image from Word but failing to paste into OneNote web app. Also, how can I copy an image from OneNote web app and paste into my desktop Word, or anywhere? • Compressing/compacting messages over websocket on Node.js

  We have a websocket implementation (Node.js/Sock.js) that exchanges data as JSON strings. As our use cases grow, so have the size of the data transmitted across the wire. The websocket protocol does not natively offer any compression feature, so in order to reduce the size of our messages we'd have to manually do something about the serialisation. There appear to be a variety of LZW implementations in Javascript, some which confuses me on their compatibility for in-browser use only versus transmission across the wire due to my lack of understanding on low-level encodings. More importantly, all of them seem to take a noticeable performance drag when Javascript is the engine doing the compression/decompression work, which is not desirable for mobile devices. Looking instead other forms of compact serialisation, MessagePack does not appear to have any active support in Javascript itself; BSON does not have any Javascript implementation; and an alternative BISON project that I tested does not deserialise everything back to their original values (large numbers), and it does not look like any further development will happen either. What are some other options others have explored for Node.js?

We have two solutions: Use phpsass which is a php script(but it has some bugs) Use Ruby Compiler which most of wordpress plugins use this I noticed that plugins which use Ruby need to have PHP proc_open function enabled on server. My question is what are Pros and Cons of using Ruby compiler on servers? and are most of shared web hosts support Ruby and have PHP proc_open function enabled by default?

• How to install Ubuntu 12.04.1 in EFI mode with Encrypted LVM?

  I'm trying to properly install Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 64-bit PC (AMD64) with the alternate install CD ".iso" on a lenovo Thinkpad X220. Default Hard Disk (with a pre-installed version of Windows 7) has been replaced with a brand new SSD. The UEFI BIOS of the lenovo Thinkpad X220 is set to "UEFI Boot only" & "USB UEFI BIOS Support" is enabled (I'm using an external USB DVD reader to perform Ubuntu installation). The BIOS is a Phoenix SecureCore Tiano, BIOS version is 8DET56WW (1.26). The attempts below are made with the UEFI BIOS settings described above. Here's what I've tried so far: Boot on a live GParted CD Create a GPT partition table Create a FAT32 partition for UEFI System, set the partition to "EF00" type ("boot" flag) Leave remaining space unformated Boot on Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 64-bit PC (AMD64) with alternate CD: Perform the install with network updates enabled Use manual partitioning FAT32 partition created with GParted is used as "EFI System partition" Remaining space is set to be used as "Physical volume for LVM" Then "Configure encrypted volumes" using the previous "Physical volume for LVM" as the encrypted container, passphrase is setup. "Configure the Logical Volume Manager" creating a volume Group using the encrypted container /dev/mapper/sda2_crypt Creation of the Logical Volumes "Create logical volume", choosing the previously created volume Group Assign a mount point and file system to the Logical volumes : LV-root for / LV-var for /var LV-usr for /usr LV-usr-local for /usr/local LV-swap for swap LV-home for /home NOTE: /tmp would be in RAM only using TMPFS Bootloader step: neither my ESP partition (/dev/sda1, /dev/sda or MBR) seems to be the right place for GRUB, I get the following message (X suffix is for demonstration only): unable to install grub in /dev/sdaX Executing 'grub-install /dev/sdaX' failed This is a fatal error. Finish installation without the Bootloader & Reboot The system doesn't start, there's no EFI/GRUB menu at startup. What are the steps to perform a clean and working installation of Ubuntu 12.04.1 Precise Pangolin, 64bit version in U(EFI) mode using the encrypted LUKS + LVM scheme described above?

• use subdomain on different host

  I want to accomplish something that I thought was simple. My wish is as follows: I have a domainname with hosting, a WordPress multisite (with subfolder setup) installed and running: gangleri.nl. I have another domain at another host and without hosting: monas.nl I created a subdomain on gangleri.nl: monas.gangleri.nl and the domain redirects to that subdomain. Now what I want is to have monas.nl act like a website, not a website in a subdomain. I would like to have post urls as in monas.nl/posttitle. I first thought to do this with the DNS settings of Monas.nl. I now have an URL forward, CURL is not what I want and I did not manage to get A-records or CNAMEs to work. I tried using the htaccess file of the WP installation in monas.gangleri.nl. I tried 301, rewrite and whatnot, but also without success. Meanwhile, I have been reading so much that I no longer have a clue what to do. A-record doesn't sound probable, since I have no IP for the subdomain, so an A-record would point to gangleri.nl rather than using the subdomain. Also I have no idea if I should do something in the DNS settings of gangleri.nl or monas.nl, both, one of them and something somewhere else. I have the idea that I've tried everything, but the more I try and read about it, the less I can get my head around. People talking about A-records to subdomains while I can only use IPs, CNAME settings that my host doesn't support or something. Could somebody tell me if what I want is possible and if so, take me by the hand and guide me through it?

• How do I use memmap to reserve memory on boot?

  Ive got a laptop with some corrupted ram addresses, so I'm trying to use memmap to reserve them before linux boots up. Ive been trying to use memmap=10M$1024M' as a kernel boot option, but linux crashes (with no errors) and restarts. If I use a different syntax for memmap likememmap=1023M@0M` it boots fine. Do I have to specify a certain size block to reserve or could my kernel version not support reserving memory with memmap? Maybe I'm better off using memmap=exactmap, and if so, could somebody point me to a good faq on how to use it?

  Hey guys im running PHP 5.4.0 and I cannot cURL nor files_get_content() https connections. • Virtual PC 2007 Full Screen Resolution

  I have a laptop (1440 x 900) and an external monitor (1920 x 1200), and I'm running Virtual PC 2007. Initially, my VPC could not switch to fullscreen mode on my external monitor because the max resolution for VPC was only 1600 x 1200. I installed a hotfix (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958162) and after the hotfix, I was able to view VPC in fullscreen mode on my external monitor, but now I'm unable to view fullscreen on my laptop. It says "please check that the resolution of the guest is not higher than that of the host". I even tried to decrease the resolution of my Virtual PC to less than than of my laptop, but it always resets it back up. So now after the hotfix, I can view fullscreen mode only when my external monitor is plugged in. Any way I can resolve this?

• How to effectively design a piece of software

  Im a compsci student and ive got some experience in various languages and paradigms c/java/python/ruby/html/css/scheme/sql/asp(classic). I realise that i want to have some software in my portfolio for future job hunting even tho i still have 2 years left of my education. Ive got a pretty good idea of what i want to make, its a webapp. Most shops around here are either .net or java and since i know java best and dont have access to ms developer tools im thinking i should go with java. Even tho i feel i know the principles of OOP pretty good ive got no clue how to go from my idea to a working solution. Where can i access information about designing the underlying architechture of my solution? Also i would like to know what other technologies i should train on, my current list includes javascript(and possibly a javascript library) some sort of java web framework tips are appreciated. I would like to add support for android/iphone apps in the future and this is something i have to take into account when designing the app. I have done a course on software engineering but i found this to be more centered around project management ideas then the actual design and implementation. So i would like tips on technologies i should focus on to get the most out of my time without the massive overhead of huge config processes but at the same time keep my project viable in a business sense, so that i use technologies that are relevant for business (java developer jobs). And i would also like tips on where i can learn more about the design process around a software project, i will be working mostly alone. But i find the approach ive used up until now (start coding and figure it out as you go) wont suffice.

  I downloaded Komparator source from this page. The INSTALL file in the source say the following: Unpack komparator4-xxx.tar.bz2, and open a shell inside this directory mkdir build cd build cmake -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=`kde4-config --prefix` .. make sudo make install I unpacked the file, make the directory, entered this, but when I have tried to cmake (sentece Nº3) the terminal print the following errors disabling me to make & install: CMake Error at /usr/share/cmake-2.8/Modules/FindKDE4.cmake:98 (MESSAGE): ERROR: cmake/modules/FindKDE4Internal.cmake not found in /home/lucio/.kde/share/apps;/usr/share/kde4/apps Call Stack (most recent call first): CMakeLists.txt:2 (find_package) CMake Warning (dev) in CMakeLists.txt: No cmake_minimum_required command is present. • How to step down voltage from 208V to 110V

  I have some racks that will be fed by 208V/20A circuits. These circuits will be conditioned and battery-backed by the facility in which these racks will live. 99% of the devices in the rack will be able to support 208V input, so I plan to use these PDUs. However, there may be one or two odd devices that will need 110V input. I know that I can use a step-down transformer to provide 110V for these devices, but that seems like overkill for such a small number of devices, plus I don't want to pay extra for the UPS functionality since my power will already be battery-backed. Any suggestions for something I can use for these one-off 110V devices?

  We develop small to large visualization projects for different tasks and industries and sometimes while rewriting them a couple of times in the process we hit walls because we discover that we need to add a lot of code to support new requirements. Now we have established a design process that seems to work well (at least we reduced the development time for each new project quite a bit), but we're still left scratching our heads around this question: what exactly should we test when testing visualizations? If everything that we want to explore is on the screen (bounded visualizations)? If the data is ok - if data is valid (that's one of the nice things about visualizations you can spot errors in your datasets)? Usability? User interaction? Code quality? I can tell you for sure that a simple check of the code quality is certainly not enough! Is there a classic paper / book about how to test visualizations? Also do you happen to know about classic design patterns for visualizations (except the obvious ones like Pub-Sub)?

  A new article, now up on otn/java, titled “The 2012 JAX Innovation Awards” reports on  important Java developments celebrated by the Awards, which were announced in July of 2012. • Using a 3g usb dongle as Cisco router access point

  We have an office opening, and we aren't going to have comms into the building when management want the building to open. Our only option (I think) Is to try and hook up a 3/4g dongle to something to act as the access point, and send all the traffic via that. The model of router we use wont support the usb dongle, so we need some sort of 'bridge' My idea was to build a Linux box, plug the dongle into that and then via the Ethernet ports plug the router in. We need the Cisco router in the equation as we create VPN connections over that back to head office. My question is will this work?

• How can I prevent users from installing software?

  Our organization is a bit different than most. During certain times of the year, we grow to thousands of employees, and during off-times, less than a hundred. Over the course of a few years, many thousands of people have come and gone in our offices, and left their legacy behind in the form of all sorts of unwanted, unapproved, (and sometimes unlicensed) software installs on our desktops. We are currently installing redundant domain controllers and upgrading current servers, all running Windows Server 2008 Enterprise, and will eventually be able to run a pure 2008 DC network. With that in mind, what are our options in being able to lock down users, such that they cannot install unauthorized software on systems without the assistance (or authorization) of the IT group? We need to support approximately 400 desktops, so automation is key. I've taken note of the Software Restrictions we can implement via Group Policy, but that implies that we already know what users will be installing and attempting to run... not quite so elegant. Any ideas?
