• Windows 2008 R2, UDDI 3.0 and No Admin Links

  Windows 2008 R2 might end up giving me a heart attack at some point. Yesterday I installed and configured UDDI 3.0 as part of an ESB 2.0 install & config.  After configuring UDDI 3.0, if I browsed to the localhost/uddi virtual directory from IIS, all of the links would show up in UDDI.  If opened up IE and went to the UDDI site only the Home and Search links would show up. You've probably already guessed at what the "fix" was... I had to Run IE as Administrator.  Then when I browse to the UDDI site all of the links show up.

• Forcing Nautilus to use Kerberos (Active Directory) authentication

  Is there a way to get Nautilus or any other file manager that runs on Ubuntu 11.04 to use Kerberos for authentication? I'm using Likewise Open to join machines to the domain, and I can't type in passwords for every user on every computer that needs to mount a network share. I've been able to get Kerberos working with the command line smbclient, but oddly Kerberos does not seem to be Nautilus-integrated. I also checked the SSH config file, and it looks like you can enable GSSAPIAuthentication, but it only works for Kerberos v2, not the current version, which I think is v5.

  Moved from Home to work and went to fire up my project and after long pause "The provider did not return a ProviderManifestToken string" or even More Abscure ProviderIncompatable Exception Now after 20 mins of chasing my tail re different ver of EntityFramework 4.1 vs 4.2...blahblahblah Look inside at the inner exception A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible DOH!!!! Or a clean translation is that it cant find SQL or is offline or not running. SO check the power is on/Service running or as in my case Edit web.config & change back to Work SQL box   Hope you dont have this pain as the default errors @ the moment suck balls in the EntityFramework 4.XX releases   Cheers

  When I install WMWare tools, I get this error for vmhgfs: /tmp/vmware-root/modules/vmhgfs-only/filesystem.c:47:28: fatal error: linux/smp_lock.h: No such file or directory compilation terminated. compilation terminated. make[2]: *** [/tmp/vmware-root/modules/vmhgfs-only/filesystem.o] Error 1 make[1]: *** [_module_/tmp/vmware-root/modules/vmhgfs-only] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-3.0.0-12-generic' make: *** [vmhgfs.ko] Error 2 make: Leaving directory `/tmp/vmware-root/modules/vmhgfs-only' If you wish to have the shared folders feature, you can install the driver by running vmware-config-tools.pl again after making sure that gcc, binutils, make and the kernel sources for your running kernel are installed on your machine. These packages are available on your distribution's installation CD. And /mnt/hgfs is empty when sharing. If I run vmware-hgfsclient in a terminal, I get the list of shared folders but /mnt/hgfs is empty.

• Nginx no static files after update

  First, i must say that i am not expert in server administration, my site was setup by hosting admins (that i cannot contact anymore). Few days ago, i updated Nginx to latest version (admin told me that it is safe to do). But after that, my site serves only html content, no CSS, images, JS. If i try to open some image i get message "Wellcome to Nginx" (same thin if i try to open static.mysitedomain.com). More details: Site has static. subdomain, but static files are in same directory as they used to be before setting up static files. I was googling for some solutions, i tried to change something in /etc/nginx/, but no luck. I feel that this is some minor configuration problem, any ideas? • Repacked proprietary software keeps updating the same deb

  I repacked a proprietary program delivered as tar file to a deb file for having a company wide repository. I used reprepro to set up a repository and signed it. A unix timestamp is faking a versioning numbering, so I can have different (real) versions installed at the same time. Almost everything works as expected. The deb file looks like this: mysoft8.0v6_1366455181_amd64.deb Only problem on a client machine it tries to install the same deb file over and over again because it thinks its an update. • Career Change Need Advice: Professional Web Developer

  I'm hoping to get some advice here on the steps I should take to make a career change into professional web development. I've been working in cancer research the last 14 years and I need a change. The job market is terrible, the pay is worse, and despite what one would think the atmosphere is generally un-collegial, even in your own group. Venture funding never returned after the dot com burst and with 3 to 5 wars our country is now in, NIH funding is only going to get worse. I know things are not going to get better for my field, sadly, and I know I need to move on. For probably just as long I have fiddled around with web development, I even run a fairly popular site with close to 1 million/month pageviews that pulls a decent income, but not stable enough to live off of right now. My skills are ok for being self taught. I enjoy the fast paced nature of the web and the tools the community creates and how eager people are to help and share knowledge; it's what science should be. I have been trying to find an entry level developer job doing standard HTML/CSS/PHP/MySQL/JS/jQuery type work. A good 50%+ of the jobs want someone with a CS degree, and most want 5 years experience. Having no professional experience and no formal education, I know I'm at a huge disadvantage. I am now considering my options on how to move forward professionally. The way I see it I have basically 3 options. Build up my portfolio of work as much as I can and continue to learn as much as I can on my own. Try to contribute on some open source project when time allows. Network like crazy and go to meetups. Be confident and pray a lot in private. OR While doing above, do some certification programs in PHP and Java, possibly others. Get a Zend Certification. OR Spend a few years getting a CS degree while doing 1. I've already done the work fulltime go to school thing and it doesn't excite me one bit. I didn't have the greatest college experience and am not too eager to return, but I have a family to feed. Is the degree really necessary or is it more of a right of passage type thing in most instances? I appreciate everyones input. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04's packaged Jetty in which I installed solr 4.3.1 (by copying the war file to /var/lib/jetty/webapps. When I start Jetty, I get this error: failed SolrRequestFilter: org.apache.solr.common.SolrException: Could not find necessary SLF4j logging jars. If using Jetty, the SLF4j logging jars need to go in the jetty lib/ext directory. The package libslf4j-java is installed, and the jars are in /usr/share/java: /usr/share/java/log4j-over-slf4j.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-api.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-jcl.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-jdk14.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-log4j12.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-migrator.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-nop.jar /usr/share/java/slf4j-simple.jar but somehow, Jetty and/or Solr are not finding them. How do I make them find them? or how do I install some other jars where jetty/solr would find them? • forked-daapd without avahi

  I'm trying to setup forked-daapd, but i'd prefer it if i could run it without avahi (or rather define my own avahi service instead of using the dbus api). The reason is that i want a netatalk share for my time machine backups and a samba share for the symbolic link support (netatalk doesn't support symlinks). Those two are defined as different services in avahi. To make that work, i have to disable avahi's dbus api, or else netatalk tends to take over all the services (osx prefers afp over smb). If I now try to start forked-daapd, it just doesn't. Forked-daapd requires avahi's dbus api to be enabled and running. Is there some sort of way around this limitation, so that i can manually define my own daap service in avahi. Maybe something like enabling but ignoring the dbus in avahi, or launching a duplicate avahi daemon with a different config file?

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 and I need to change the clock resolution to 1000 Hz (now it's 250 Hz, the default value). I understand that I have to set it and then recompile the kernel, as for example described here. It's not clear, though, how I can do it from the terminal, as for instance the suggested make menuconfig won't work. Any tips? Basically, I thought that if one of my static files in my container was updated, the cache in my reverse proxy would be invalidated and my browser would get the new version of the file when it requests it... But I now have the sentiment I misunderstood many things. Of all things, I now wonder how nginx on the server can know about a file in the container has changed? I have seen a directive proxy_header_pass (or something alike), should I use this to let the nginx instance from the container somehow inform the one in Proxmox about updated files? Is this expectation just a dream, or can I do it with nginx on my current architecture?

• LIRC-ZILOG on ubuntu 12.04

  I followed these guides to configure a Hauppauge PVR, and after compiling the hpvr modules, I have this problem: (that also includes the zilog one) # locate zilog /lib/modules/3.2.0-29-generic/kernel/drivers/staging/media/lirc/lirc_zilog.ko /lib/modules/3.2.0-34-generic/kernel/drivers/staging/media/lirc/lirc_zilog.ko /usr/src/linux-headers-3.2.0-29-generic/include/config/lirc/zilog.h sudo modprobe lirc_zilog FATAL: Error inserting lirc_zilog (/lib/modules/3.2.0-34-generic/kernel/drivers/staging/media/lirc/lirc_zilog.ko): Invalid argument The PVR works and I can get a test video with sound. The remote does not. I want the transmitter to work so it can automatically change the channel on the cable box and find the video I wanted to record. The LIRC sources are not on Ubuntu sources and so I can only guess at what commands I might have to use. How do I resolve the error and get the remote working?

• Windows 7 Virtual PC - &ldquo;RPC server unavailable&rdquo;

  I use Windows 7 Virtual PC on my current project and I often bring home the files, so I can work some in the evenings.  Since my VHDs are large, I’ll only copy the undo disks, saved state, and virtual machine config files from my external drive.  I copy them to a small portable drive and once I get home, I’ll copy them to a large external drive. I’ve done this for over a year, but recently I started getting an error when I tried to start the VPC after the copying was finished.  It would open the initial window with the progress bar, but eventually the bar would stop, turn red, and then the error “RPC server unavailable” would appear.  When I first started seeing these, I’d try again, but no luck. After some testing, it turns out that my small portable drive is apparently going bad, so it was corrupting the files.  Lucky for me, that I never overwrote my good copies with corrupted copies, at least not at both the office and at home.

• How do I disable changing proxy settings?

  I've got several machines, running 14.04.1, for kids to access. Each machine has accounts for each kid, as well accounts for several adults. Although I've set a system wide proxy use policy, it doesn't get used by Chrome. Instead, I had to log into each kids account and set a proxy use policy, pointing to tinyproxy/dansguardian, for safe internet access. The problem is that, should the kids get an ounce of computer savvy, they'll figure out that they can launch the proxy settings config panel from Unity, then change the proxy settings to None, and completely bypass the "safe" internet scheme I've setup. Can anyone tell me how I can disable those user accounts from being able to modify their proxy settings (not the "system wide" ones... those arent used.. this is the per-user settings). Thanks

• eGalax Touchscreen not working Jolicloud 1.2

  I have an eGalax touchscreen on an Acer Aspire One running Jolicloud 1.2 I have had success getting this touchscreen to work correctly on ubuntu 10.04NBR, 11.04 and Kubuntu 12.04 and Puppy Linux, so I am pretty happy with how it SHOULD be done. However, I cannot get it to calibrate correctly or remember calibration settings. I have installed the eGalax utility (all available versions) and it does not recognize the screen. Xinput_calibrator works but the config cannot be made permanent. Problems I have identified: -Joli doesn't have an xorg.conf file and does not use xorg.conf.d for evdev configuration -Setting configs through Hal doesn't work anymore The best I can get is a poorly adjusted touchscreen with a reversed Y axis. Any help greatly appreciated

• System Settings icons missing

  Is there any way to reset the System Settings Control Panel page? The Control Panel was fine, but the for no apparent reason, PRIVACY, BACKGROUND and a host of other icons have vanished... My system seems pretty messed up after the upgrade... Shutdown, Reset, and Logout from the menu no longer work either... However, I can launch the Privacy panel from the terminal: activity-log-manager and it runs... so why is this, and others, now missing from the System Setting Control Panel? I have checked and: activity-log-manager-control-center is installed Is there a config file I can check, or a setting in Gconf where the list of icons are referenced? I have run - in desperation - sudo apt-get purge unity* sudo apt-get purge ubuntu* sudo apt-get autoremove Run Gconf-cleaner and Janitor then re-installed all packages Still the same issue....?

• Dropbox indicator icon dissapears right after login

  Even though Dropbox's app indicator dissapearing from the tray area seems like a recurrent enough problem, my issue is a litte different. When I login, I can see the app panel populating, and the dropbox icon does indeed appear (config'd as startup application), but after some other icons show up (bluetooth, battery, etc.) it's gone. It's still running though. I'm guessing it's having issues with staying pinned, and I don't know how to start addressing this problem. I have tried many if not all solutions provided here in the forums for the "icon missing" questions. So far: I've whitelisted everything regarding panel Uninstalled-reinstalled (with and without rebooting in between) Overwritten current installation Purged installation from terminal Installed from Software Center and from .deb file batch deleted every "dropbox" ocurrences from terminal (files and folders) and reinstalled Ran sudo apt-get install libappindicator1, it installed, but didn't solve anything I'm on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS - 64 bits. Any insight would me much appreciated!

• How should I trouble-shoot a frozen startup screen?

  The Problem: I'm running 10.04, and it suddenly started freezing after it boots. I can move the mouse, but I can't select anything. When the problem first started, there were only two things on the screen: 1. Gnome-Do 2. "Unlock Login Keyring" dialog box What I have done thus far: Asked myself if the keyboard was plugged in :-) Yes, it is. Tried to use ALT+F2 or CTRL+ALT+F1 per the "What Should I Do When Ubuntu Freezes" question. (Neither were responsive) Tried to reboot using the REISUB method (which did reboot, but I still had the same problem upon restart) Gnome-Do was in the autostart folder, and I removed it by deleting ~/.config/autostart/gnome-do.desktop Deleted my password keyring per this blog post Tried to kill and restart X with ALT+SysReq+K (Screen went black but X didn't restart) Tried to hit the Esc button What my screen is currently showing: My screen currently shows the "Choose password for new keyring" dialog box.
