  • How to set up a file server in a restricted corporate environment

    - by Emilio M Bumachar
I work in a big corporation, and the disk space my team gets in the corporate file server is so low, I am considering turning my work PC into a file server. I ask this community for links to tutorials, software suggestions, and advice in general about how to set it up. My machine is an Intel Core2Duo E7500 @ 3GHz, 3 GB of RAM, Running Windows XP Service Pack 3. Upgrading, formatting or installing another OS is out of the question. But I do have Administrator priviledges on the PC, and I can install programs (at least for now). A lot of security software I don't even know about is and must remain installed. But I only need communication whithin the corporate network, which is not restricted. People have usernames (logins) on the corporate network, and I need to use them to restrict access. Simply put, I have a list of logins of team members, and only people in the list should access the files. I have about 150 GB of free disk space. I'm thinking of allocating 100 GB to the team's shared files. I plan monthly backups on machines of co-workers, same configuration. But automation of backups is a nice, unnecessary feature: it's totally acceptable for me to manually copy the contents to a different machine once a month. Uptime is important, as everyone would use these files in their daily work. I have experience as a python and C programmer, but no experience whatsoever as a sysadmin, and almost nothing of my programming experience is network programming. I'm a complete beginner in this. Thanks in advance for any help. EDIT I honestly appreciate all the warnings, I really do, but what I plan to make available is mostly stuff that now is solely on DVDs just for space reasons. It's 'daily work' to read them, but 'daily work write' files will remain on the corporate server. As for the importance of uptime, I think I overstated it: a few outages are OK, it's already an improvement over getting the DVDs. As for policy, my manager is kind of on my side, I will confirm that before making my move. As for getting more space through the proper channels, well, that was Plan A, and it's still on the table... But I don't have much hope. I'm not as "core businees" as I'd like.

  • Accessing Network Printers from a Citrix Session:

    - by Harry
We have an application that uses Active Reports documents. You pass a document the UNC of the printer and away it goes. We have a group that runs this application within a Citrix session and the truly networked printers function perfectly but shared printers that work well outside of Citrix become unreachable. Printers do not need to be defined on the machine running the report for the system to work. There is something in the way Critrix passes the information to the destination UNC that I don’t understand.

  • What ports does Management Studio use to connect to SQL Server (2005)

    - by Martin
I have SQL Server 2005 operating on a remotely hosted server and wish to access it from my own machine using management studio The firewall on the remote server is allready setup to allow all traffic from my external IP - and that works great. However I have a load balancing router that has a second line attached to it - unfortunatly the second line has a dynamic external IP. I need to therefore set up a rule in the router to always send data from Management studio on the first line - but I need to know the port numbers. Can you advise?

  • How to enable .NET Framework 3.5 on Windows 8 without downloading it?

    - by Diogo
Since I installed Windows 8 Preview on my personal computer, during the installation of some programs and drivers(Windows 7 ones) started to pop me a message warning that .Net Framework 3.5 was needed: I could use "Install this feature", start to download some dependencies(300MB) and that's it, but I don't want to have to download it every time I want to enable this feature on every machine that I install Windows 8. There is some way to install .Net 3.5 on Windows 8 without having to download the entire Framework from Microsoft?

  • Bittorrent surveillance/monitoring

    - by Flamewires
Is there any tool to sniff bittorrent traffic and reassemble data about the torrent? Im looking for file names, peers, tracker address, local IP, etc. This is purely for academic interest in which all parties would be willing participants and therefore please dont upvote responses that talk merely about legal issues with using this kind of approach on a production network. I also am assuming that the torrent connections are unencrypted. Thanks

    - by JP
Hello, I'm new to the cloud and EC2 and am wondering how licensing of operating systems works. Specifically, i spent some time looking at amazon machine images (ami's) and some contain windows and sql server. My question is how does the licensing work: a) Do I install my own licenses once the boxes are available? b) Are these licenses covered by my Amazon bill c) what are any costs associated with this software? Thank in advance, JP

  • Reasons for missing IP info in `last` output on pts logins?

Mon Nov 12 14:41 - 14:46 (00:04) You can see two of my pts login entries above that do not have a source IP address associated with them. My CentOS machines have as many as six other users that share the systems, but the mpenning userid is the only one that has this issue. Approximately 5% of my logins see this issue, but no other usernames exhibit this behavior. Questions Given the kind of scripts I keep on these systems (which control much of our network infrastructure), I'm a little spooked by this and would like to understand what would cause my logins to occasionally miss source addresses. Is there anything (other than malicious activity) that would reasonably explain the behavior? Other than bash history timestamping, are there other things I can do to track the issue down? Informational Since this started happening, I enabled bash history time-stamping (i.e. HISTTIMEFORMAT="%y-%m-%d %T " in .bash_profile) and also added a few other bash history hacks; however, that does not give clues to what happened during the previous occurrences. All the systems run CentOS 6.3... • Deny login from certain hosts if logging in with specific sql credentials

    - by Dave
I want to stop some of our developers from connecting to the production sql server using a specific sql account. They have rights to connect through windows authentication with lower rights. They claim that changing the password will affect too many other processes running on our processing machine. So I want to deny access if they're connecting from there dev machines for now. Another way this would work is if I could just allow connections from one specific host.

  • is AV software needed for Windows XP Mode on Windows 7?

    - by Wesley
Hi all, I just got Windows XP Mode on my Windows 7 Professional 64-bit machine. I notice that the Windows XP Security Center notes that I don't have any virus protection. However, I'm running AVG Free on Windows 7. Do I need to have some sort of anti-virus program installed on Windows XP Mode? Thanks in advance.

  • Capture Outgoing Email to One Mailbox or Account on Linux

    - by futureal
I am looking to see if anything exists that would allow us to capture all outgoing email on a machine -- for example, in a staging environment -- and drop it in a single place, which ideally would be something we could check with a mail client. Currently we're doing this on the software level (if environment is staging, rewrite address) which is a bit ugly and leads to errors. The servers are currently on Debian Linux, using exim as the mail transport. Open to any and all suggestions!

  • Is there any way to set up a malware-blocking transparent proxy on an Airport Extreme?

    - by Chris R
I'd like to add some kind of easily-administered transparent HTTP proxy to my home network. Ideally, it would allow me to, for example, redirect web requests to blacklisted servers into nothing, block certain kinds of content, et al. My home network at the moment consists of a mac mini media server that could -- if the load wasn't huge -- fill this role as well, an Airport Extreme, and a mac laptop that is my main machine. I'm reasonably technically savvy, so don't spare the complicated answers.

  • What filesystem for shared (read/write) PC/Mac external drive?

    - by webworm
Is there a recommended filesystem to use when sharing an external drive between the Mac and PC? I understand there are options for Macs to read/write NTFS filesystems and also for PCs to read/write HFS+ filesystems. Is there a preferred filesystem or perhaps a different filesystem that both Mac and PC and read/write? I know I could use FAT32 but some of the files I use are larger than 4 GB (i.e. Virtual Machine images)

  • Laserjet Experts: How many power cycles per month?

    - by marienbad
I recently got a nice Laserjet 8100DN for my house. I will probably never print more than 1% of its rated monthly duty cycle. But it runs some fairly noisy fans 24/7 if it's left on, so I am in the habit of turning the machine off as soon as I'm done with it. So, for all you who have a lot of experiencing administrating workgroup LaserJets, do you think I'll end up killing it from too many on-off cycles?

  • How do I convert a Mac OS Filemaker 2 database to a recent FM or Bento db, preserving the relations

    - by willc2
I'm hoping for more than just exporting the data, I would like to preserve the relation between the databases. This is for a friend's legacy database that tracks monthly fees from a list of clients. I have the original FM database file on hand, but not the machine it ran on with the old version of Filemaker 2. Recent versions won't import it, saying it's too old. If there is a Mac-only solution that would make things simpler for me.

  • Apache won't follow Symlink

    - by Marvin Dickhaus
I have a LAMP server (Ubuntu 12.10) setup on my development machine. It is a T60 modified with an SSD. The server base is in /var/www. Apache has the following config: DocumentRoot /var/www <Directory /> Options FollowSymLinks AllowOverride None </Directory> <Directory /var/www/> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews SymLinksIfOwnerMatch AllowOverride all Order allow, deny allow from all </Directory> I'm currently developing a SilverStripe CMS featured site. The folder for the server is /var/www/sfk/. The framework and all cms relavant features are in their respective folders. The only folder that need to be modified would be the /var/www/sfk/mysite folder. Because of that I want to keep the mysite folder under my home directory and symlink it into the server folder. So here is what I've done: ln -s ~/sfk/mysite/ /var/www/sfk/ sudo chgrp www-data /var/www/sfk/mysite -R ls tells me the following: /var/www/sfk (exerpt) drwxr-xr-x 3 marvin www-data 4096 Nov 16 16:53 assets drwxr-xr-x 12 marvin www-data 4096 Nov 16 16:53 cms drwxr-xr-x 29 marvin www-data 4096 Nov 16 16:53 framework -rw-r--r-- 1 marvin www-data 2410 Nov 16 16:53 index.php lrwxrwxrwx 1 marvin www-data 24 Nov 20 17:45 mysite -> /home/marvin/sfk/mysite/ -rw-rw-r-- 1 marvin www-data 514 Nov 16 16:55 _ss_environment.php drwxr-xr-x 4 marvin www-data 4096 Nov 16 16:53 themes and ls /var/www/sfk/mysite/ drwxrwxr-x 6 marvin www-data 4096 Nov 16 00:15 code drwxrwxr-x 2 marvin www-data 4096 Nov 16 11:51 _config -rwxrwxr-x 1 marvin www-data 2685 Nov 16 15:39 _config.php drwxrwxr-x 2 marvin www-data 4096 Nov 16 00:15 css drwxrwxr-x 2 marvin www-data 4096 Nov 16 00:15 images drwxrwxr-x 2 marvin www-data 4096 Nov 16 00:15 javascript drwxrwxr-x 5 marvin www-data 4096 Nov 16 00:15 templates This is literally the same setup I have on my desktop machine. The problem I have is that the mysite/ folder is just not recognized. I'm thankful for every advice I get. I'm frustrated because I'm stuck with this issue for hours.
