• Is It Possible to Change Default Windows Idle Time for Task Scheduler?

  From the official Microsoft docs: Detecting the Idle State The Task Scheduler service will verify that the computer is in an idle state every 15 minutes. The computer is considered idle if all the processors and all the disks were idle for more than 90% of the past 15 minutes and if there is no keyboard or mouse input during this period of time. Besides, any presentation type application that sets the ES_DISPLAY_REQUIRED flag will make Task Scheduler to not consider the system as being idle. In Windows 7, Task Scheduler considers a processor as idle even when low priority threads (thread priority < normal) execute. Is there any way to change the time to less than 15 minutes minutes? Am I assuming this hard-coded and impossible? My Google-fu has eluded me so far and I found nothing, but wanted to check here before giving up.

  I've recently bought a refurbished Toshiba Satellite A660 11M and I get the blue screen of death appearing fairly frequently now, and I can't seem to work out why or how to prevent/cure it. Firstly I thought it was due to Zone Alarm from what I read on the net, but then I thought it was a memory issue after it crashed whilst I was running Memtest. But after I ran Memtest a second time, it completed without any errors...   I got a simple cloud server and thought it would be nice to have mac native afp Volumes accesss. Installed Netatalk and this seems to work pretty nice. No sensitive data or something but I don't like to wake up someday and have my www docs rm-rfed by some kid h4x0r. Q1: Is afp encrypted? Q2: How can I make it (semi)secure? Q3: Does VPN makes sense for this? Q4: What would you do to get afp working over net? Opening any service meant for Lan only is a basic flaw, i know - but me be ignorant about it. According to Apple Dev only the authentication is encrypted or am I mssing something?

I just don't know how to log into it. In fact, I'd just like to reboot it. That'd be fine. Thing is: it's across the ocean (I'm in the US, and the machine is in Europe). I'd run some hundreds of java threads at the same time and apparently that was too much for the host. How can I get back in?

• "From Russia with Love" - My Oracle Russian Experience

  Two weeks ago, I traveled to Moscow, Russia. I had the pleasure of meeting with many of our Oracle Partners and Customers in the region.  I also worked with our Oracle Russia team throughout the week building many new friendships. The showcase for the week was an Oracle Support Strategy event for our Oracle Partners and Customers.  It was held at the Kateria-City Hotel, Moscow.  The Oracle Marketing team did an amazing job registering 100+ for the event, and nearly 100 were in attendance.           During the event, I spoke about many different topics. Part was a hands-on workshop to personalize your MOS Dashboard and configure Hot-Topics Email alerts.  Customers learned how to subscribe to newsletters and other Oracle information.  It covered a mulitude of Support Best Practices.  Additionally, I presented Platinum Services to the audience and my colleague Kristophe Hermans, from Oracle Belgium spoke on Proactive Support. In addition, I had the distinct privilege to meet one-on-one with our customers representing OJSC VimpelCom, MTC-Rus and Sberbank.  Pictured with me is Valery Yourinsky, Director of Technology Consulting Dept, FORS Distribution (Oracle Platinum Partner) Finally, I spent 2.5 days with my Oracle colleagues from Oracle Russia. • What would cause previously sent emails to be sent again from Exchange the first time someone logs i

  A few users testing our Citrix XenApp service found that several (seemingly random) previously sent emails were sent out immediately after they logged into Outlook via Citrix for the first time. The problem hasn't occurred for them since. After one user had this happen, and we scratched our heads about it thinking it was a fluke, our IT director had this same issue. I guess I'd rule out any PEBKAC issues. I really don't know where to begin troubleshooting this problem. If you have any ideas what could have caused this, I'd appreciate you sharing them, as strange or far-fetched as they may seem :)

• Skype 2.1beta for Linux and sound quality

  I've been using Skype 2.1beta for Linux with my bluetooth headset and quality of the sound is just awful. But not always though, if I call echo service, quality is acceptable, but when I call real people there's echo, sound is crippling, there's pauses, voice is unrecognizable, all sorts of quality problems in one call. If I use newest Skype under WIndows with the same headset to call to the same people, quality is more than normal. So, is there some settings I can tweak, like tell Skype which codec to use or maybe there's noise cancellation plugin for PulseAudio I can use or any other system setting I can try to play with?

  Hi All, I'm trying to setup SSL on fedora with apache. In my vhost... SSLCertificateFile /your/path/to/crt.crt SSLCertificateKeyFile /your/path/to/key.key SSLCertificateChainFile /your/path/to/DigiCertCA.crt I had it working fine with a self signed key, but can't get it to work with the DigiCertCA crt. When I run service httpd restart It fails to start. This is what I get in the logs... • Concurrency with listeners and upload: is this solution sound?

  I'm working on an Android app. We have listeners for position data and camera capture which is timed on a background thread (not a service). The timer thread dictates when the image is captured and also when the data is cached in a local sqlite db. So, my question is how to properly store the location data as it comes in based on the listeners and pull that data so that the database can be updated as the camera capture is executed. I can't put the location data into the database as it arrives because it is processed more frequently than the camera images and the camera images are what dominates the architecture at the moment. (Location data is supplement). However I need the location data to get a rough location of the where the image is captured. My first thought was to have singleton store the location data. And have a semaphore on the getInstance method so if the database update is happening (after an image is captured) we don't have an error. The location data can wait for the database update or it can be lost for that particular event it doesn't really matter. What are you thoughts? Am I on the right track? (And is this the right sub-site or would this be better on stackoverflow?)

  I have a Windows Server 2008 machine running in VirtualBox. On initial installation, only one processor was made available, but now I want to run it as a multiprocessor machine. I have made all four cores available in the VirtualBox settings (as well as enabling VT-x/AMD-V and Nested Paging), but Task Manager still only shows one CPU. However, the four CPU cores are visible in Device Manager under Processors. • Mobile cross-platform SDK for computationally intensive apps

  I am aware of the PhoneGap toolkit for creating mobile applications for virtually all mobile platforms with a significant market share. However, the code in PhoneGap that is shared between the different platforms is written in JavaScript. While I like JS, I think it's hardly appropriate for computationally intensive tasks. The situation with Titanium is pretty much the same. So, is there any way that I can create a cross-platform mobile app that has the computationally intensive code shared between the platforms? Some context: Obviously, I don't want to implement the time consuming algorithm in many different languages, since this violates DRY, increases the chance for bugs slipping in at least one version and require boilerplate code to work. I've looked at Xamarin's MonoTouch and Mono for Android tools, but while they cover iOS and Android, they're not nearly as versatile for deployment as PhoneGap. On the other hand, (IMO) the statically typed nature of C# is more suited for intense computation than JS. Are there any other SDK/tools appropriate for the task that I don't know about or a point about the mentioned above that I've missed? Also, uploading data to a web service for processing is not an option, because of the traffic required.

• What features are helpful when performing remote debugging / diagnostics?

  Obviously, the easiest way to solve a bug is to be able to reproduce it in-house. However, sometimes that is not practical. For starters, users are often not very good at providing you with useful information. Customer Service: "what seems to be the issue?" User: "It crashed!" To further compound that, sometimes the bug only occurs under certain environmentally conditions that can not be adequately replicated in-house. With that in mind, it is important to build some sort of diagnostic framework into your product. What types of built-in diagnostic tools have you used or seen used? Logging seems to be the predominate method, which makes sense. We have a fairly sophisticated logging frame work in place with different levels of verbosity and the ability to filter on specific modules (actually we can filter down to the granularity of a single file). Error logs are placed strategically to manufacture a pretty good representation of a stack trace when an error occurs. We don't have the luxury of 10 million terabytes of disk space since I work on embedded platforms, so we have two ways of getting them off the system: a serial port and a syslog server. However, an issue we run into sometimes is actually getting the user to turn the logs on. Our current framework often requires some user interaction.

• Ubuntu won't suspend anymore, but it did upon install.

  I fresh installed Ubuntu 10.10 back when it came out, and my laptop was suspending fine. All of a sudden, I can't get my laptop to suspend anymore. It's an HP Pavilion dv2-1110, but I don't think it's a hardware issue, here's why: It suspended fine upon first install. I haven't installed any new kernels since then, but I have installed tons of packages, so it's probably a package. The suspend and hibernate options disappeared from the shutdown menu. If I press my keyboard's suspend button (or if I close the lid) I get the following message: If I try the command pmi action suspend, I get the error message: Error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.freedesktop.Hal was not provided by any .service files. If I try the command echo -n mem > sudo /sys/power/state I get absolutely no output and no visible effect. What might be causing this behavior? I thought a list of installed packages might be useful, but it's huge and I don't know how to post it here in collapse/expand mode or something. EDIT:Just in case someone asks, none of the installed packages are kdm or anything like that (which would justify the lack of options in gnome's shutdown menu).

  I'm looking for a freeware or low cost application that will backup everything, including registry on Windows Vista Home Premium and to restore from a CDROM disk. The destination is an external hard drive on USB 2.0. Searching on SuperUser and Stack Overflow show articles, but don't mention full backup of the registry and complete restore using CDROM. I would also like to have compressed output and incremental backups. One article mentions CloneZilla, but their web page says that the incremental feature is not supported. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 1. I need to backup 200 GB onto a 230 GB drive and would like to have multiple backups (thus the need for compression). Other requirements: Single file restore Quality is more important than performance. Application must run on Windows Vista. Extra: Run as daemon or background task on 4 user system. Thanks

APIs supporting HPC, GPGPU or MapReduce are all useful – providing you have the ability to choose the correct algorithm to leverage on them. I really think this is the most fascinating area of programming – a lot more exciting than LOB CRUD !!! When you think about it , everything is a function – we categorize & we extrapolate. As abstractions get higher & less leaky, sooner or later information systems programming will become a non-programmer task – you will be using WYSIWYG designers to build: GUIs MVVM service mapping & virtualization workflows ORM Entity relations In the data source SharePoint / LightSwitch are not there yet, but every iteration gets closer. For information workers, managed code is a race to the bottom. As MS futures are a bit shaky right now, the provider agnostic nature & higher barriers of entry of both C++ & Numerical Analysis seem like a rational choice to me. Its also fascinating – stepping outside the box. • cannot connect to MS FTP 7.5 on Windows 2008 on Amazon EC2 instance

  I have just installed the MS FTP 7.5 upgrade on my Windows 2008 Server (Service Pack 2) running on an Amazon EC2 instance. In the FTP Firewall Support settings for the server in IIS Manager I have set up the passive port range 45001 - 45005 and also set the External Firewall IP address to match the assigned Amazon Elastic IP address. Using the AWS Console I changed the Security Group for the server to allow access to the server through ports 21 and 45001 through 45005. Using an FTP client (either the command line FTP client or Windows Explorer) on the Amazon server I can connect to the FTP server but I cannot connect with an external FTP client. When I checked to see which ports were open on the server using Shields Up it shows that port 21 is open but ports 45001 to 45005 are closed. I assume I'm missing something. Any help greatly appreciated.

• Events 1030 and 1006 in Windows 2003

  I've got a computer running Windows 2003 R2 Standard Edition Service Pack 2 and periodically (every 5 minutes) the systems generates 2 errors that can be seen in the event viewer. The codes of the events are 1030, 1006 that seems to be related to group policies... I don´t know if these events are realted to the perfomance of the system but anyway i would like to fix them. I've googled around and seems to be a common problem but i haven't found a solution for these events. Do you know how can be fix it? Thanks in advance

• Building a Store Locator ASP.NET Application Using Google Maps API (Part 2)

  Last week's article, Building a Store Locator ASP.NET Application Using Google Maps API (Part 1), was the first in a multi-part article series exploring how to add store locator-type functionality to your ASP.NET website using the free Google Maps API. Part 1 started with an examination of the database used to power the store locator, which contains a single table named Stores with columns capturing the store number, its address and its latitude and longitude coordinates. Next, we looked at using Google Maps API's geocoding service to translate a user-entered address, such as San Diego, CA or 92101 into its latitude and longitude coordinates. Knowing the coordinates of the address entered by the user, we then looked at writing a SQL query to return those stores within (roughly) 15 miles of the user-entered address. These nearby stores were then displayed in a grid, listing the store number, the distance from the address entered to each store, and the store's address. While a list of nearby stores and their distances certainly qualifies as a store locator, most store locators also include a map showing the area searched, with markers denoting the store locations.
