• A Method for Reducing Contention and Overhead in Worker Queues for Multithreaded Java Applications

  A java.net article, rich in practical resources, by IBM India Labs’ Sathiskumar Palaniappan, Kavitha Varadarajan, and Jayashree Viswanathan, explores the challenge of writing code in a way that that effectively makes use of the resources of modern multicore processors and multiprocessor servers.As the article states: “Many server applications, such as Web servers, application servers, database servers, file servers, and mail servers, maintain worker queues and thread pools to handle large numbers of short tasks that arrive from remote sources. In general, a ‘worker queue’ holds all the short tasks that need to be executed, and the threads in the thread pool retrieve the tasks from the worker queue and complete the tasks. Since multiple threads act on the worker queue, adding tasks to and deleting tasks from the worker queue needs to be synchronized, which introduces contention in the worker queue.” The article goes on to explain ways that developers can reduce contention by maintaining one queue per thread. It also demonstrates a work-stealing technique that helps in effectively utilizing the CPU in multicore systems. Read the rest of the article here.

NFJS is basically a set program of world class speakers and topics offered at major US cities year round. I am proud to share with you that I recently joined the legendary NFJS troupe. My hope is that this will help solve the lingering problem of effectively spreading the Java EE message here in the US. I had my tour debut on April 4-5 with the NFJS New York Software Symposium. I did four of my most favorite talks and it was not that bad for a start - I have more in the coming months in Columbus Ohio, Denver Colorado and Austin Texas.   The guidelines discuss the service layer with its service interfaces and data/message/fault contracts. They also discuss the business layer with its logic/workflow components and entities as well as the 'optional' application facade. What is unclear still to me after studying this guide is where the implementations of the service interfaces belong. Does the application facade in the business layer implement these interfaces, or does a separate 'service facade' exist to make calls to the business layer and it's facade/raw components? (With the former, there would be less seemingly trivial calls to yet another layer, though with the latter I could see how the service layer could remove the concerns of translating business entities to data contracts from the business layer.)

• Converting ANTLR AST to Java bytecode using ASM

  I am currently trying to write my own compiler, targeting the JVM. I have completed the parsing step using Java classes generated by ANTLR, and have an AST of the source code to work from (An ANTLR "CommonTree", specifically). I am using ASM to simplify the generating of the bytecode. Could anyone give a broad overview of how to convert this AST to bytecode? My current strategy is to explore down the tree, generating different code depending on the current node (using "Tree.getType()"). The problem is that I can only recognise tokens from my lexer this way, rather than more complex patterns from the parser. Is there something I am missing, or am I simply approaching this wrong?   Starting with Java SE 8, the JDBC-ODBC Bridge will no longer be included with the JDK. The JDBC-ODBC Bridge has always been considered transitional and a non-supported product[1] that was only provided with select JDK bundles and not included with the JRE. The JDBC-ODBC bridge provides limited support for JDBC 2.0 and does not support more recent versions of the JDBC specification. I would recommend that you use a JDBC driver provided by the vendor of your database or a commercial JDBC Driver instead of the JDBC-ODBC Bridge. • Write data to SQL Server directly from BizTalk or use external service?

  An external source will be sending us XML data that BizTalk will pick up and transform into an internal schema. We need this data to be loaded into a SQL Server database as we're going to expose some of the data to our web front-end via a custom WCF service. The question is: what is the recommended approach for doing something like this? Options we're considering are having BizTalk write to the database directly or having BizTalk call a custom WCF service which would handle the save operation. Another briefly considered idea was having BizTalk write to an MSMQ and have a custom service pull from there and store it in the database. What are some of the guidelines or questions that should be asked in assessing these options? There are concerns related to overhead from calling the extra service, duplication of efforts if the schema is modified in the future (which it will be to some extent), and simply the best way to design within a service-oriented architecture that we're struggling with.

• Moving from a traditional in memory Java session to persistent storage sessions

  We have decided to take the plunge and move from using a typical java session provider in Tomcat/Jetty/etc to persisting everything to a central datastore. We are looking at using MongoDB for this. A few options come to mind... http://wiki.eclipse.org/Jetty/Tutorial/MongoDB_Session_Clustering This is nice because it will "auto-magically" persist our session to a Mongo installation. I am concerned however that we will not have fine grained control of what is happening. https://github.com/mattinsler/com.lowereast.guiceymongo/ GuiceMongo is interesting as it integrates with Guice. Perhaps we could persist everything via this ORM. Has anybody had to deal with this kind of move? It seems that moving from in memory to persistent session storage has a lot of gotchas.

This service will then relay those commands to other services (call them B and C) which are written, respectively, in .NET and Java (service A chooses which of service B or C to which to relay depending on the contents of the request to service A). I am looking for a framework that will allow for interoperability with both .NET and with Java, for example WCF or JAX-WS, or writing a custom framework (e.g., JSON REST commands over HTTP, similar to http://code.google.com/p/selenium/wiki/JsonWireProtocol). What questions/aspects should I consider in deciding?

  I am building a new website for a friend of mine. Its all plain html, and a server side include. The problem is to build static pages for 500 products would not be fun to create, or maintain. So i am forced to at least put dynamic information on these pages based off a spreadsheet, or dynamic pages all together. What i want to do is have a spreadsheet that can be used to keep track of in stock quantity, sku numbers, ecc.. that way i dont have to update hundreds of pages every night. He can just edit the spreadsheet and the pages will automatically adjust. I am a busy man, and i am not asking anyone to just give me the answer. But to save some time what is more worth learning to get this done fastest. HTML5, PHP, JAVA asp, or is there somehthing else better suited?
