  • The HTML5 doctype is not triggering standards mode in IE8

    i work for a company where all our sites currently use the XHTML 1.0 transitional doctype (yes i know it is very old school). I want to change them all to use the HTML5 doctype seeing as it is backwards compatible. One of the reasons why i want to make the switch is because in IE8 if someone has the developer tools installed then the old XHTML doctype switches the browser into compatibility mode and renders the page as IE7. From reading up on it i was led to believe that the HTML5 doctype will set any page to render in standards mode, but this is not happening when i test it on our staging server it still flips into IE7 rendering mode. The weird thing is if i save the page with HTML5 doctype locally and open it, it is rendering in IE8 standards mode. There must be something else causing it to drop into compatibility IE7 rendering. Any ideas what this could be?   • Objective-C woes: cellForRowAtIndexPath crashes.

    I want to the user to be able to search for a record in a DB. The fetch and the results returned work perfectly. I am having a hard time setting the UItableview to display the result tho. The application continually crashes at cellForRowAtIndexPath. Please, someone help before I have a heart attack over here.   • Why is my PHP query executing twice on page load?

    I am newish to PHP and I seem to be having an issue with an insert statement that executes twice when I open this page to view a document. In the database the 2nd insert is 1 second later. I am unsure if it is a favicon issue as my upload page uses an insert query and it executes once.   • How to reduce Entity Framework 4 query compile time?

    Summary: We're having problems with EF4 query compilation times of 12+ seconds. Cached queries will only get us so far; are there any ways we can actually reduce the compilation time? Is there anything we might be doing wrong we can look for? Thanks! We have an EF4 model which is exposed over the WCF services. For each of our entity types we expose a method to fetch and return the whole entity for display / edit including a number of referenced child objects. For one particular entity we have to .Include() 31 tables / sub-tables to return all relevant data. Unfortunately this makes the EF query compilation prohibitively slow: it takes 12-15 seconds to compile and builds a 7,800-line, 300K query. This is the back-end of a web UI which will need to be snappier than that. Is there anything we can do to improve this? We can CompiledQuery.Compile this - that doesn't do any work until first use and so helps the second and subsequent executions but our customer is nervous that the first usage shouldn't be slow either. Similarly if the IIS app pool hosting the web service gets recycled we'll lose the cached plan, although we can increase lifetimes to minimise this. Also I can't see a way to precompile this ahead of time and / or to serialise out the EF compiled query cache (short of reflection tricks). The CompiledQuery object only contains a GUID reference into the cache so it's the cache we really care about. (Writing this out it occurs to me I can kick off something in the background from app_startup to execute all queries to get them compiled - is that safe?) However even if we do solve that problem, we build up our search queries dynamically with LINQ-to-Entities clauses based on which parameters we're searching on: I don't think the SQL generator does a good enough job that we can move all that logic into the SQL layer so I don't think we can pre-compile our search queries. This is less serious because the search data results use fewer tables and so it's only 3-4 seconds compile not 12-15 but the customer thinks that still won't really be acceptable to end-users. So we really need to reduce the query compilation time somehow. Any ideas? Profiling points to ELinqQueryState.GetExecutionPlan as the place to start and I have attempted to step into that but without the real .NET 4 source available I couldn't get very far, and the source generated by Reflector won't let me step into some functions or set breakpoints in them. The project was upgraded from .NET 3.5 so I have tried regenerating the EDMX from scratch in EF4 in case there was something wrong with it but that didn't help. I have tried the EFProf utility advertised here but it doesn't look like it would help with this. My large query crashes its data collector anyway. I have run the generated query through SQL performance tuning and it already has 100% index usage. I can't see anything wrong with the database that would cause the query generator problems. Is there something O(n^2) in the execution plan compiler - is breaking this down into blocks of separate data loads rather than all 32 tables at once likely to help? Setting EF to lazy-load didn't help. I've bought the pre-release O'Reilly Julie Lerman EF4 book but I can't find anything in there to help beyond 'compile your queries'. I don't understand why it's taking 12-15 seconds to generate a single select across 32 tables so I'm optimistic there's some scope for improvement! Thanks for any suggestions! We're running against SQL Server 2008 in case that matters and XP / 7 / server 2008 R2 using RTM VS2010.

  • How to get an X11 Window from a Process ID ?

    Under Linux, my C++ application is using fork() and execv() to launch multiple instances of OpenOffice so as to view some powerpoint slide shows. This part works. Next I want to be able to move the OpenOffice windows to specific locations on the display. I can do that with the XMoveResizeWindow() function but I need to find the Window for each instance. I have the process ID of each instance, how can I find the X11 Window from that ? UPDATE - Thanks to Andy's suggestion, I have pulled this off. I'm posting the code here to share it with the Stack Overflow community.   • Compiling ruby1.9.1 hangs and fills swap!

    I'm compiling Ruby 1.9.1-p376 under Ubuntu 8.04 server LTS (64-bit), by doing the following: $ ./configure $ make $ sudo make install ./configure works without complaints. make hangs indefinitely until all my RAM and swap is gone.     I have a file with the top 1000 baby names. I want to ask the user for a name...search the file...and tell the user what rank that name is for boy names and what rank for girl names. If it isn't in boy names or girl names, it tells the user it's not among the popular names for that gender. The file is laid out like this: Rank Boy-Names Girl-Names 1 Jacob Emily 2 Michael Emma . . . Desired output for input Michael would be: Michael is 2nd most popular among boy names. If Michael is not in girl names it should say: Michael is not among the most popular girl names Though if it was, it would say: Micheal is (rank) among girl names The code I have so far is below..   • How do I properly add existing source code files to my Xcode project?

    I'm new to iPhone development and I'm still getting familiar with the Mac dev environment, including Xcode. I want to add some 3rd party code to my iPhone project, but when I add the "existing files" to my Xcode project, I'm presented with a dialog box that has far too many options that I don't understand and, as such, my project isn't working. When I #import headerfilename.h, I get a build error that reads headerfilename.h: No such file or directory. Can anyone explain to me what all these options mean or give me a link to some documentation that can? I'm having a hard time finding anything in Apple's docs. Which options do I want to choose to add existing source code files to my Xcode project? I should note that the source code files that I'm trying to add are located in my project/Classes/frameworkname/ directory. After they're added, do I need to reference this new code directory in my project settings anywhere (i.e. some kind of header file directory variable)? Thanks so much! Update: I found the following answers/responses on the apple dev forums that were very useful and helped me fix my issue... To make it simple : - if you do not check the copy option, the file stay where it is. - if you check it, it is copied in your project folders In the first case (what it seems you are doing) you need to tell the compiler that the header files are in another directory : - project info - build - search paths - User Header Search Path : add the directory from where you took the header file Hope this will help You have discovered the most confusing dialog box that ever came out of Cupertino. Six years of Xcode, and this thing still is partly a mystery to me. To even get that far, I had to make many test projects to try and reverse-engineer what this thing does. The "Copy" box means that it will copy the files as they are right now, into the project. If this box is not checked, then it just references those files during a build and copies them as they are at THAT time. For source code, you want the Copy box checked. The "relative to" is a total mystery to me and I can't help you with that. I usually leave it however it is already set. Does it mean relative to where they are on disk, or the arrangement in Xcode, or in the bundle? Who knows. The last 2 radio buttons SEEM to mean that it will either re-create the folder structure of the folder you are adding, or just put "fake" folders in Xcode that point to the real folders. This is probably your problem - you are adding source code that is not all at the top level, and when it goes to find it, it does not re-create the hierarchy. Others can supply a better way, hopefully, but what I would do is put all of the source in one folder and add that, using the Copy box. Then in Xcode you can make whatever bogus folders you want and put the source file names in those fake folders.

Unfortunately, we recently reconfigured openldap on this server so that a "BASE DC=" is specified in /etc/openldap/ldap.conf and /etc/ldap.conf. That change seems to mean ldapsearch ignores the LDAP_BASEDN environment variable, and so my ldapsearch fails. I've tried a couple of different fixes but without success so far: (1) I tried going back to using the "-b" argument to ldapsearch, but escaping the shell metacharacters. I started writing the escaping code: my $ldn_escaped = $ldn; $ldn_escaped =~ s/\/\\/g; $ldn_escaped =~ s/`/\`/g; $ldn_escaped =~ s/$/\$/g; $ldn_escaped =~ s/"/\"/g; That threw up some Perl errors because I haven't escaped those regexes properly in Perl (the line number matches the regex with the backticks in). Backticks found where operator expected at /tmp/mycommand line 404, at end of line At the same time I started to doubt this approach and looked for a better one. (2) I then saw some Stackoverflow questions (here and here) that suggested a better solution. Can I move/rename it, or inspect it to find out where it is (or is it not actually saved to disk)?     BACKGROUND I have a script to upload an image. One to keep the original image and one to resize the image. 1. If the image dimensions (width & height) are within max dimensions I use a simple "copy" direct to folder UserPics. 2. If the original dimensions are bigger than max dimensions I want to resize the width and height to be within max. Both of them are uploading the image to the folder, but in case 2, the image will not be resized. QUESTION Is there something wrong with the script? Is there something wrong with the settings?     I'm having some trouble figuring this out. I have an unordered list menu that I want to style all the last elements with a folder icon and style all the expandable (parent) elements with a plus.gif image. I wanted to simply change the class by using .addclass() using jquery, which will contain the css to add the background-image. My jquery code below is only selecting the ":last-child", which is placing a folder icon on the last element in the list. i need to place a folder icon in front of all the "li's" that don't hav any children, and place a plus icon in front of all those that do have children. Is there a way to accomplish this?     Greetings, I have gridview with SelectedIndexChanged event. when I click on a record in gridview it should call the SelectedIndexChanged event and do some operations. SelectedIndexChanged event is working OK, but when I put the gridview inside ajax updatepanle SelectedIndexChanged event will not response even if I add AsyncPostBackTrigger trigger for SelectedIndexChanged event. Please look at my code and advice me what I should do!!     I have a WiX project and I want to automatically create a ProgramMenu and Desktop shortcut. I've tried the following but the Desktop shortcut is not created.     My homepage pulls in content from my MySQL database to create a blog. I've got it so that it only displays an extract from the posts. For some reason it displays HTML tags as well rather than formatting it using the tags (See picture below). Any help is appreciated.     Hi experts, I'm having problem with jqGrid delete mechanism as it only send "oper" and "id" parameters in form of POST data (id is the primary key of the table). The problem is, I need to delete a row based on the id and another column value, let's say user_id. How to add this user_id to the POST data??? I can summarize the issue as the following: How to get the cell value (user_id) of the selected row? AND, how to add that user_id to the POST data so it can be retrieved from the code behind where the actual delete process takes place.   • Core Data migration problem: "Persistent store migration failed, missing source managed object model

    The Background A Cocoa Non Document Core Data project with two Managed Object Models. Model 1 stays the same. Model 2 has changed, so I want to migrate the store. I've created a new version by Design Data Model Add Model Version in Xcode. The difference between versions is a single relationship that's been changed from to a one to many. I've made my changes to the model, then saved. I've made a new Mapping Model that has the old model as a source and new model as a destination. I've ensured all Mapping Models and Data Models and are being compiled and all are copied to the Resource folder of my app bundle. I've switched on migrations by passing in a dictionary with the NSMigratePersistentStoresAutomaticallyOption key as [NSNumber numberWithBool:YES] when adding the Persistent Store. Rather than merging all models in the bundle, I've specified the two models I want to use (model 1 and the new version of model 2) and merged them using modelByMergingModels: The Problem No matter what I do to migrate, I get the error message: "Persistent store migration failed, missing source managed object model." What I've Tried I clean after every single build. I've tried various combinations of having only the model I'm migrating to in Resources, being compiled, or both. Since the error message implies it can't find the source model for my migration, I've tried having every version of the model in both the Resources folder and being compiled. I've made sure I'm not making a really basic error by switching back to the original version of my data model. The app runs fine. I've deleted the Mapping Model and the new version of the model, cleaned, then recreated both. I've tried making a different change in the new model - deleting an entity instead. I'm at my wits end. I can't help but think I've made a huge mistake somewhere that I'm not seeing. Any ideas?

  • HintPath vs ReferencePath in Visual Studio

    What exactly is the difference between the HintPath in a .csproj file and the ReferencePath in a .csproj.user file? We're trying to commit to a convention where dependency DLLs are in a "releases" svn repo and all projects point to a particular release. Since different developers have different folder structures, relative references won't work, so we came up with a scheme to use an environment variable pointing to the particular developer's releases folder to create an absolute reference. So after a reference is added, we manually edit the project file to change the reference to an absolute path using the environment variable. I've noticed that this can be done with both the HintPath and the ReferencePath, but the only difference I could find between them is that HintPath is resolved at build-time and ReferencePath when the project is loaded into the IDE. I'm not really sure what the ramifications of that are though. I have noticed that VS sometimes rewrites the .csproj.user and I have to rewrite the ReferencePath, but I'm not sure what triggers that. I've heard that it's best not to check in the .csproj.user file since it's user-specific, so I'd like to aim for that, but I've also heard that the HintPath-specified DLL isn't "guaranteed" to be loaded if the same DLL is e.g. located in the project's output directory. Any thoughts on this?

  • Visual Studio: Add Item / Add as link rather than just Add

    I'm new to visual studio, coming from Delphi. I have a directory tree full of .cs files (root is \Common). I also have a directory tree full of Applications (root is \Applications) Finally, I've got a tree full of Assemblies (root is \Assemblies) I'd like to keep my .cs files in the Common tree and all the environment voodoo (solutions, projects, settings, metadata, debug data, bin, etc.) in the Assmblies tree. So, for a simple example, I've got an assembly called PdMagic.Common.Math.dll. The Solution and project is located in \Assemblies\Common\Math. All of its source (.cs) files are in \Common\Math. (matrix.cs, trig.cs, mathtypes.cs, mathfuncs.cs, stats.cs, etc.) When I use Add Existing Item to add matrix.cs to my project, a copy of it is added to the \Assemblies\Common\Math folder. I just want to reference it. I don't want multiple copies laying around. I've tried Add Existing Item, and used the drop down to "Add link" rather than just "Add", and that seems to do what I want. Question: What is the "best practice" for this sort of thing? Do most people just put those .cs files all in the same folder as the project? Why isn't "Add link" the default? Thanks!

  • How do I get Lucene (.NET) to highlight correctly with wildcards?

    I am using the Lucene.NET API directly in my ASP.NET/C# web application. When I search using a wildcard, like "fuc*", the highlighter doesn't highlight anything, but when I search for the whole word, like "fuchsia", it highlights fine. Does Lucene have the ability to highlight using the same logic it used to match with?   • How to implement Gmail OAuth API to send email (especially via SMTP)?

    I'm developing a web application that will send emails on behalf of a logged-in user. I'm trying to use the new Gmail OAuth protocol announced described here to send these emails through the user's Gmail account (preferably using SMTP rather than IMAP, but I'm easy). However, the sample PHP code gives me a couple of problems. All of the sample code is based on IMAP, not SMTP. Why "support" the SMTP protocol if you're not going to show people how to use it? The sample code gives me a fatal error from an uncaught Zend exception -- it can't find the "INBOX" folder. Note: I've already been able to connect to Gmail's SMTP server via SSL and successfully send an email, provided that the user has given my application his/her Gmail username and password. I'd like to avoid this method, because it encourages phishing and security-minded users won't accept it. This question is not about that.
