  • SQL ConnectionString in web.config and global.asax implications

    - by rlb.usa
This is going to sound very odd, but I have a web.config like this: <connectionStrings> <remove name="LocalSqlServer"/> <add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=BACKUPDB;..." providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/> </connectionStrings> And a global.asax like this: void Session_Start(object sender, EventArgs e) { // Code that runs when a new session is started if (Application["con"] == null || Application["con"] == "") { Application["con"] = "Data Source=PRODUCTIONDB;..."; } } And EVERYWHERE in my code, I reference my ConnectionStrings like this: SqlConnection con = new SqlConnection(Convert.ToString(HttpContext.Current.Application["con"])); However, I see that everything I do inside this application goes to BACKUP db instead of PRODUCTIONDB. What is going on, how could this happen, and why? It doesn't make any sense to me, and it got me into a lot of trouble. We use LocalSqlServer string for FormsAuthentication.

  • Unit testing "hybrid" WPF/Silverlight controls

    - by Alan Mendelevich
I'm starting a new WPF/Silverlight custom control project and wanted to do unit testing on this one. However I'm a little confused about how to approach this. This control would be based on the same codebase for both WPF and Silverlight with minor forking using #ifs and partial classes to tame the differences. I guess I could write unit tests for WPF part with NUnit, MSTest, xUnit, etc. and for the Silverlight part with Silverlight Unit Test Framework but this doesn't sound very elegant to me. I'd have to either ignore testing identical code on one of the platforms and test only differing parts (which is not very trustworthy) or rewrite tests for 2 frameworks (which is annoying). Is this the right way to go? I'm wondering if there's some guidance, articles, tutorials out there on how to approach this task. Any pointers?

  • Grouping Windows Forms Radiobuttons with different parent controls in C#

    - by Jerry
Hi, I've got a Windows Forms application in which I have a number of RadioButtons. These RadioButtons are placed within a FlowLayoutPanel which automatically arranges them for me. All RadioButtons that are directly added to the FlowLayoutPanel are grouped, meaning I can select only one of them. However, some of these RadioButtons are paired up with a TextBox so I can supply some argument there. But to have all this arranged properly, I add a Panel control to the FlowLayoutPanel so I can control the alignment of the RadioButton and TextBox relatively to each other myself. These RadioButtons now have their own respective Panels as parent controls and thus are no longer included in the radio group with the other RadioButtons. I read that the the RadioButtons that are in the System.Web.UI namespace have a GroupName property, but unfortunately their System.Windows.Forms counterparts lack this property. Is there some other way I can group these radio buttons are am I going to have to handle onClick events myself? Thanks, Jerry

  • Possible Encoding Issue Reading HTM File using .Net Streamreader

    - by Brian Boatright
I have an HTML file with a ® (copyright) and ™ (trademark) symbol in the text. These are just two among many other symbols. When I read the html file into a literal control it converts the symbols to something else. The copyright symbol converts to ? (open box in ff) The trademark symbol converts to ™ (as expected) If (System.IO.File.Exists(FullName)) Then Dim StreamReader1 As New System.IO.StreamReader(FullName) Contents.Text = StreamReader1.ReadToEnd() StreamReader1.Close() End If Contents is a <asp:Literal runat="server" ID="Contents"></asp:Literal> and it's the only control in the aspx page. From some research I think this is related to the encoding but I don't know why it would change how to fix it. The html file does not contain any Content-Type settings in the head section.

  • How can I overlay one image onto another?

    - by Edward Tanguay
    I would like to display an image composed of two images. I want image rectangle.png to show with image sticker.png on top of it with its left-hand corner at pixel 10, 10. Here is as far as I got, but how do I combine the images? Image image = new Image(); image.Source = new BitmapImage(new Uri(@"c:\test\rectangle.png")); image.Stretch = Stretch.None; image.HorizontalAlignment = HorizontalAlignment.Left; Image imageSticker = new Image(); imageSticker.Source = new BitmapImage(new Uri(@"c:\test\sticker.png")); image.OverlayImage(imageSticker, 10, 10); //how to do this? TheContent.Content = image;

  • UpdatePanel works great in all browsers except IE8

    - by Phil
    I'm using a timer triggered update panel which works perfectly under the latest versions of Firefox, Opera, and Safari. However, in IE, it sometimes works fine (just the panel updates without flicker elsewhere), but often the whole page starts to flicker after a while. I'm using a control to encapsulate this logic and the control is used on all of the pages on my web site. Here's my code. Any suggestions? and Thank you. <%@ Control Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeBehind="QuoteControl.ascx.cs" Inherits="occinc.QuoteControl" %> <asp:ScriptManager ID="ScriptManager1" runat="server" EnablePartialRendering="True" AjaxFrameworkMode="Enabled"/> <asp:UpdatePanel UpdateMode="Conditional" runat="server" ID="UpdatePanel1" > <ContentTemplate> <div id="content-side2-three-column"> <%--Data Source Controls--%> <asp:ObjectDataSource ID="ObjectDataSourceQuotes" runat="server" SelectMethod="GetAllQuotes" TypeName="Quotes"></asp:ObjectDataSource> <asp:GridView ID="GridViewQuotes" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="False" DataSourceID="ObjectDataSourceQuotes" BorderWidth="0" BorderColor="white" OnRowCreated="GridViewAllQuotes_RowCreated"> <Columns> <asp:TemplateField> <ItemTemplate> <h2 id="<%# Eval("id").ToString() %>"> <%# Eval("Author") %> </h2> <q lang="en-us"><%# Eval("Content")%></q> <br /> <hr /> </ItemTemplate> </asp:TemplateField> </Columns> </asp:GridView> </div> </ContentTemplate> <Triggers><asp:AsyncPostBackTrigger ControlID="Timer1" EventName="Tick" /></Triggers> </asp:UpdatePanel> <asp:Timer ID="Timer1" runat="server" Interval="5000" /> <div class="clear"> </div>

  • AVD Screen orientation not changing with CTRL+F11 or CTRL+F12

    - by Brad Hein
I run my app in the AVD emulator using eclipse but I'm unable to change the screen orientation in the AVD (Android 2.0 platform on the emulator). When I press CONTROL+F11 or CONTROL+F12 on the keyboard, nothing happens. No messages are generated in the adb debuglog/logcat either when I press either hotkey. According to http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/emulator.html these are the correct hotkeys to switch the emulator's screen orientation. I tried it with my app, and with the messaging app. The hotkey has no affect in any case. I'm running Fedora 12, Gnome. I checked my Keyboard Shortcuts in the System - Preferences menu, nothing's attached to either hotkey. Same problem, 3 different PCs (all running Fedora Gnome).

  • Problem with WiX major upgrade!

    - by Joshua
    Okay, my last question on this journey of WiX upgrades managed to get my settings file to be preserved! However, There is another component that is being preserved that I don't want to! I need it to overwrite, and it's not. The component "Settings" now works, with the NeverOverwrite="yes", and a KeyPath="yes". However, the component immediately below it does not work! It needs to overwrite both the MDF and the LDF with new ones from the install! I've tried lots of stuff, and am stumped. Please and thank you! Here is the components: <DirectoryRef Id="CommonAppDataPathways"> <Component Id="CommonAppDataPathwaysFolderComponent" Guid="087C6F14-E87E-4B57-A7FA-C03FC8488E0D"> <CreateFolder> <Permission User="Everyone" GenericAll="yes" /> </CreateFolder> <RemoveFolder Id="CommonAppDataPathways" On="uninstall" /> <!-- <RegistryValue Root="HKCU" Key="Software\TDR\Pathways" Name="installed" Type="integer" Value="1" KeyPath="yes" />--> </Component> <Component Id="Settings" Guid="A3513208-4F12-4496-B609-197812B4A953" NeverOverwrite="yes"> <File Id="settingsXml" KeyPath="yes" ShortName="SETTINGS.XML" Name="Settings.xml" DiskId="1" Source="\\fileserver\Release\Pathways\Dependencies\Settings\settings.xml" Vital="yes" /> </Component> <Component Id="Database" Guid="1D8756EF-FD6C-49BC-8400-299492E8C65D"> <File KeyPath="yes" Id="pathwaysMdf" Name="Pathways.mdf" DiskId="1" Source="\\fileserver\Shared\Databases\Pathways\SystemDBs\Pathways.mdf" /> <File Id="pathwaysLdf" Name="Pathways_log.ldf" DiskId="1" Source="\\fileserver\Shared\Databases\Pathways\SystemDBs\Pathways.ldf" /> <RemoveFile Id="pathwaysMdf" Name="Pathways.mdf" On="uninstall" /> <RemoveFile Id="pathwaysLdf" Name="Pathways_log.ldf" On="uninstall" /> </Component> </DirectoryRef> And here is the features: <Feature Id="App" Title="Pathways Application" Level="1" Description="Pathways software" Display="expand" ConfigurableDirectory="INSTALLDIR" Absent="disallow" AllowAdvertise="no" InstallDefault="local"> <ComponentRef Id="Application" /> <ComponentRef Id="CommonAppDataPathwaysFolderComponent" /> <ComponentRef Id="Settings"/> <ComponentRef Id="ProgramsMenuShortcutComponent" /> <Feature Id="Shortcuts" Title="Desktop Shortcut" Level="1" Absent="allow" AllowAdvertise="no" InstallDefault="local"> <ComponentRef Id="DesktopShortcutComponent" /> </Feature> </Feature> <Feature Id="Data" Title="Database" Level="1" Absent="allow" AllowAdvertise="no" InstallDefault="local"> <ComponentRef Id="Database" /> </Feature> And here is the InstallExecuteSequence: <InstallExecuteSequence> <RemoveExistingProducts After="InstallFinalize"/> </InstallExecuteSequence> What am I doing wrong?

  • How to remove a tab attribute in ASP .NET AJAX Toolkit using Regular Expression

    - by Nassign
I have tried to remove the following tag generated by the AJAX Control toolkit. The scenario is our GUI team used the AJAX control toolkit to make the GUI but I need to move them to normal ASP .NET view tag using MultiView. I want to remove all the __designer: attributes Here is the code <asp:TextBox ID="a" runat="server" __designer:wfdid="w540" /> <asp:DropdownList ID="a" runat="server" __designer:wfdid="w541" /> ..... <asp:DropdownList ID="a" runat="server" __designer:wfdid="w786" /> I tried to use the regular expression find replace in Visual Studio using: Find: :__designer\:wfdid="w{([0-9]+)}" Replace with empty space Can any regular expression expert help?

  • How to share WinForms and code between 2 projects

    - by Richard Bysouth
Hi I have a working Windows Forms app (split into an EXE and a few DLLs). Now I've been asked to look at creating another app (MyAppLite) that has only a very small subset of the functionality. Think of it as similar to MS Word Viewer vs. MS Word. Everything that I need to build MyAppLite is contained in the main solution - essentially I need to use a couple of the WinForms and whatever bits in the DLLs they call into. What would be the best way to do this? I was thinking of creating another Project in my solution for MyAppLite, then adding the necessary source files as links (using Add Existing Item Add As Link in Solution Explorer). I definitely wouldn't want to maintain 2 copies of the source code. FYI it's a .NET 2.0 VB app, using VS2008. thanks Richard

  • Read entire file in Scala?

    - by Brendan OConnor
What's a simple and canonical way to read an entire file into memory in Scala? (Ideally, with control over character encoding.) The best I can come up with is: scala.io.Source.fromPath("file.txt").getLines.reduceLeft(_+_) or am I supposed to use one of Java's god-awful idioms, the best of which (without using an external library) seems to be: import java.util.Scanner import java.io.File new Scanner(new File("file.txt")).useDelimiter("\\Z").next() From reading mailing list discussions, it's not clear to me that scala.io.Source is even supposed to be the canonical I/O library. I don't understand what its intended purpose is, exactly. ... I'd like something dead-simple and easy to remember. For example, in these languages it's very hard to forget the idiom ... Ruby open("file.txt").read Ruby File.read("file.txt") Python open("file.txt").read()

  • Sum of path products in DAG

    - by Jules
Suppose we have a DAG with edges labeled with numbers. Define the value of a path as the product of the labels. For each (source,sink)-pair I want to find the sum of the values of all the paths from source to sink. You can do this in polynomial time with dynamic programming, but there are still some choices that can be made in how you decompose the problem. In my case I have one DAG that has to be evaluated repeatedly with different labelings. My question is: for a given DAG, how can we pre-compute a good strategy for computing these values for different labelings repeatedly. It would be nice if there was an algorithm that finds an optimal way, for example a way that minimizes the number of multiplications. But perhaps this is too much to ask, I would be very happy with an algorithm that just gives a good decomposition.

  • Changing styling of DataGridViewComboBoxCell from DropDownList to DropDown?

    - by John at CashCommons
(This question is narrower in scope than this question I asked earlier.) Say I have a DataGridViewComboBoxColumn, and want to switch the style of the ComboBox control between DropDownList and DropDown (mainly for the text field editing capability). I'd like to do this on a row-by-row basis (at the DataGridViewComboBoxCell level). How would I do that programatically? Or maybe a different way of asking: How do I access the ComboBox control given an object of type DataGridViewComboBoxCell? (I'm in VB 2005.) Thanks as always.

  • Tool to generate a GUI (WinForms or WPF) from a class.

    - by Pat
Say we've got a class like public class Doer { public int Timeout {get;set;} public string DoIt(string input) { string toReturn; // Do something that involves a Timeout return toReturn; } } Is there a tool that would create a Form or Control for prototyping this class? The GUI might have a NumericUpDown control with a label of "Timeout" and a GroupBox with a TextBox for "input" and a button labeled "DoIt" with an eventhandler that calls Doer.DoIt with the Text property of the input TextBox and puts the response in another TextBox.

  • Javascript timer in parent window is cancelled on child window close

    - by Tom Carter
I have a user UserControl on a web page. There is a javascript timer started by the control on the client that causes a web service to be called every few seconds. If the user clicks on the control a new browser window is opened (with window.open() ) to show a different page. Note the onclick returns false so there is no postback to the page. The page displayed in the second window also has a timer that operates in the same way as the first (calls a WebService at intervals). Upto this point everything is fine - each of the timers continue to run in their respective window. However, when I close the second window (either by clicking on the cross of the window or by calling self.close() ) the timer in the first stops. I've no idea why. Is there some relationship between the opener and opened window that I'm missing ?

  • How do you handle browser cache with login/logout?

    - by Julien
To improve performances, I'd like to add a fairly long Cache-Control (up to 30 minutes) to each page since they do not change often. However, each page also displays the name of the user logged in (like this website). The problem is when the user logs in or logs out: the user name must change. How can I change the user name after each login/logout action while keeping a long Cache-Control? Here are the solutions I can think of: Ajax request (not cached) to retrieve and display the user name. If I have 2 requests (/user?registered and /user?new), they could be cached as well. But I am afraid this extra request would nullify my caching performance-wise Add a unique URL variable (?time=) to make the URL different, and cancel the cache. However, I would have to add this variable to all links on my webpage, not very convenient code-wise This problems becomes greater if I actually have more content that is not the same for registered users and new users.

  • gwt internationalization

    - by blub
Hello guys, there are three (open) questions about the internationalization of GWT, I have: 1) Is it a (huge) performance issue, to use only "Messages" for constant and parameterized text (that's possible), where you would use both "Messages" and "Constants" usually? 2) Is there a way to specify the original text in the source code, whose translations can then be specified somewhere? (e.g. Translate("Hello") in the source code and than in a properties file for e.g. spanish: Hello = ¡Hola!) 3) Do you know any translation-tools, which generate the properties and interfaces for you? Thanks in Advance!

What am I doing wrong and how to resolve it?

  • Stopping Windows Mobile 6.5 tab reordering

    - by PaulH
I have a C++ Visual Studio 2008 Windows Mobile 6.5 application that uses a tab control. I've noticed that depending on how careful you are with the stylus, when using the tab control you can accidentally re-order the tabs. It's difficult to do deliberately, but it's very easy to do when you're not trying. I assume this is a new "feature" of Windows Mobile 6.5 as it doesn't happen in Windows Mobile 6.1 with the same code. Is there a window style or something I can set that will lock the tab order such that people don't accidentally re-arrange them? Also, is there an MSDN page that describes this behavior and how it is supposed to work? I've looked, but have come up empty. Thanks, PaulH

  • Why won't Silverlight handle the conversion of my custom float property

    - by Jeff Weber
In a Silverlight 4 project I have a class that extends Canvas: public class AppendageCanvas : Canvas { public float Friction { get; set; } public float Restitution { get; set; } public float Density { get; set; } } I use this canvas in Blend by dragging it onto another control and setting the custom properties: When I run the app, I get the following error when InitializeComponent is called on the control containing my custom canvas: I'm not sure why Silverlight isn't able to convert this property from it's string representation in Xaml, to the float that it is. Anyone have any ideas?

  • Why is javac failing on @Override annotation

    - by skiphoppy
Eclipse is adding @Override annotations when I implement methods of an interface. Eclipse seems to have no problem with this. And our automated build process from Cruise Control seems to have no problem with this. But when I build from the command-line, with ant running javac, I get this error: [javac] C:\path\project\src\com\us\MyClass.java:70: method does not override a method from its superclass [javac] @Override [javac] ^ [javac] 1 error Eclipse is running under Java 1.6. Cruise Control is running Java 1.5. My ant build fails regardless of which version of Java I use.

  • Java - binary compatibility of abstract class & subclasses

    - by thSoft
In Java, I define an abstract class with both concrete and abstract methods in it, and it has to be subclassed independently by third-party developers. Just to be sure: are there any changes I could make to the abstract class that are source compatible with their classes but not binary compatible? In other words: after they have compiled their subclasses, could I change the abstract class - apart from e.g. adding an abstract method to it or removing a protected method from it that is called by subclasses, which are of course source incompatible - in a way that could force them to recompile their subclasses?
