• Gimpshop 2.8. Available for Win & Mac. No Linux version?

  Finally got around to upgrading 12.04 to 12.10. One of the nice things about the new version is that Gimp 2.8 is in the repositories. Installed and it's a far cry from the 2.2, 2.4 and 2.6 versions which were —at least from my untrained point of view– next to unusable. Now 2.8 is a much more intuitive, for Photoshop users at least, and I'm trying to really learn it. Browsing around, I found that there's s new version of Gimpshop, something that was a sorely amateurish attempt to a PS interface over an old Gimp version and sure to mess up your system. Seeing "2.8" prominently displayed in the page, I decided to try the Windows version. Oddly, there's a Mac version too but no Linux one. The link directs one to a non-existent file in one of the cloud storage sites. After the Win version was installed, I fired it up and, surprise!, it's exactly the same as I can tell without diving into menus and dialogs, as the plain vanilla Ubuntu version I have installed. Can anybody shed light on what goes on here? Is this a scheme to get inadvertent users to install some "optional extras" that come with the installer? Very curious about it (thanks God I'm not a cat ).

• PXE boot linux. PXE-E51: No DHCP or proxyDHCP offers were received

  I am trying to have an ubuntu box (192.168.10.9) acting as a PXE server, but i have trouble getting DHCP to work. The PXE server is connected to a SOHO router (192.168.10.1) acting as a switch. I have disabled the DHCP server on the router. $ dhcpd --version isc-dhcpd-4.2.4 The contents of /etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf ddns-update-style none; option domain-name-servers 192.168.10.1; default-lease-time 3600; max-lease-time 7200; authoritative; log-facility local7; allow booting; allow bootp; subnet 192.168.10.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { range dynamic-bootp 192.168.10.101 192.168.10.200; option routers 192.168.10.1; option broadcast-address 192.168.10.255; next-server 192.168.10.9; filename "/tftpboot/pxelinux.0"; } The contents of /etc/default/isc-dhcp-server INTERFACES="eth0" When the client boots, it tries to get an IP address from the server but fails with the following Error message: PXE-E51: No DHCP or proxyDHCP offers were received. • Configuring Seam for Glassfish

  Hi all, I am still migrating to Glassfish instead of Jetty for our application servers and am running into some problems. The application starts up fine, the database tables are created by hibernate and data is imported by my database importer, so Seam is alive, running and well. • How to deploy on a remote machine using hudson's WAS Builder Plugin?

  I have a hudson build server (Windows) that does not have Websphere installed. I created a Hudson node that I connect to via SSH. I also installed the WAS Builder Plugin to run jython scripts on the AIX machine. The job that uses the WAS Builder Plugin is tied to the AIX box. I run into errors. Does anybody know, whether that setup might work or if a different setup will work for the WAS Builder Plugin? • Linux: How to delay hddtemp service start at boot until all hdd are visible?

  I live in a hot and humid environment, therefore I monitor the hdd temperature using hddtemp and gkrellm. There is an LSI9211 8i sata/sas controller in my computer. I have drives connected to both my motherboard and the LSI. hddtemp monitors only the drives directly connected to my motherboard after booting the system, therefore gkrellm displays the temperature of those drvies only. Logging in and restarting hddtemp before starting gkrellm fixes my issue, i.e. drives connected to the LSI controller are also visible. It seems that the drives connected to the LSI controller become visible only after hddtemp is started in the boot sequence. I think delaying it would help. How can I delay the starting of hddtemp till all drives are visible? I prefer a way to check if drives are visible to the delay of a specific amount of seconds.

  I have a mysql database master and slave in production. I want to setup additional mysql slave. There is around 15 Terabyte of data in the database and there are MYISAM and InnoDB tables in the database. I am thinking of below options: Shutdown master database and copy the mysql data folder to secondary slave. Can Innodb tables be copied like this? Run flush table with read lock, scp the file to new slave and unlock the table and this is possible for myisam tables, can I do the same for innodb tables too? Thanks for looking at the question.

• 1 TB hdd and no space to create a partition for linux !

  I have a brand new Acer aspire 5811 with core i5 processor and all that. There is windows 7 Home Premium pre-installed on it. I want to install arch and setup a dual boot system. The problem is: Windows shows 4 partitions 14 MB UNKNOWN recovery partition 100MB NTFS System Reserved partition for Windows 7 448GB NTFS Windows 7 system partition 468GB NTFS Data partition for windows 7 But GpartedLive cd and also arch setup show 5 partitions 938Kb UNKOWN system reserved partition 14 MB UNKNOWN recovery partition 100MB NTFS System Reserved partition for Windows 7 448GB NTFS Windows 7 system partition 468GB unusable space Because of this, I cannot create another primary partition. Can any body guide me about how should I go for creating partition for installing arch ? Note: I need to keep windows 7 working. regards.

• Linux how to force an external ping from eth0 to eth1 without a router.

  Hello, i am trying to have eth0 connected to eth1 on the same machine with a loopback cable. I have eth0 as 2.2.2.1 and eth1 as 2.2.2.2 with netmask 255.255.255.0 and the right Bcast 2.2.2.255 . I tried to ping -I eth0 2.2.2.2 and ping -I eth1 2.2.2.1. My issue is that even when the loopback cable is not plugged the ping still succeed( as if it is an internal ping). How can I force an external ping where I make sure the packets are going through the connected cable? ( I know I can have a router and both ethernets connected to it, but I am avoiding to use anything besides a simple cat 5 cable). Thanks.

  (Edit: clarification below) We have a number of groups of developers that change frequently, and a security policy to require individual logins to servers using rsa or dsa public keys, which is achieved via the standard method of adding id_dsa.pub to their authorized keys file. I am using chef to sync the user accounts across machines, however our previous method of using webmin to manage the user passwords is not designed for key based auth, and hence is not easy to use for non-technical users. The developers are logging in from the WAN using ssh, they can either provide their own key, or an administrator will send them a private key. The development machines are located in the cloud and we have a single server available to host the master set of accounts. Obviously I could deploy ldap or other centralised authentication system, but that seems a bit over blown when webmin worked well for the simple case. It is easy to achieve synchronised users, groups and passwords across a bunch of low security development boxes using webmin clustered users and groups. However looking at the currently installed webmin it is not so easy to create the authorized keys as it is to create user accounts and passwords. (its possible, but its not easy - some functionality is in the usermin module, or would required some tedious steps) Ideally I'd like a web interface that is pretty much dedicated to creating users and groups, and can generate key pairs on the fly, and can accepted pasted in public keys to add to the users authorized keys file. If the tool sync'ed the users and keys as well, that would be great, but I can use chef to do that part if the accounts are created correctly on the "master" server.

• How stable is zfs-fuse 0.6.9 on Linux?

  I'm thinking of using ZFS for my home-made NAS array. I would have 4 HDDs in raidz on a Ubuntu Server 10.04 machine. I'd like to use the snapshot capability and dedup when storing data. I'm not so much concerned about the speed, since the machine is accessed via N wireless network and that is probably going to be the bottleneck. So does anyone have any practical experience with zfs-fuse 0.6.9 on such (or simillar) configuration?
