• How can I solve Windows PPTP VPN issues?

  I'm having persistent problems with Windows PPTP VPN connections. The VPN appears up whilst the tunnel won't transfer traffic (ping to a remote IP within the VPN works for a while, and then fails). The client receives routing information via DHCP. When the connection fails, the routing table is still correct so I don't think it's a routing problem. My internet connection is via an ADSL2 line. There's software to deal with PPTP problems, like TunnelRat, but I don't want to install v1.1 of the .NET framework and I'd rather get to the bottom of the problem (I have multiple VPN connections and some are more unreliable than others). What can I do to get to the bottom of this? Alternatively, what can I do to keep the connection alive?

• CNAME point subdomain to another domain

  I know this has been asked before in various forms, but I've tried all the suggestions and had no luck (or maybe skills). I am trying to point a subdomain (mail.cloversalon.com) to Rackspace's hosted Webmail service for a client. My understanding is I should be able to set up cname for the subdomain and point it to rackspace's hostname: apps.rackspace.com I have set up the following cnames: www.mail IN CNAME apps.rackspace.com autodiscover IN CNAME autodiscover.emailsrvr.com mail IN CNAME apps.rackspace.com I have tried doing dig mail.cloversalon.com and nslookup but both report that mail.cloversalon.com is a nonexistent domain. I have restarted the name server numerous times. I'm sure I must be missing something silly. Thanks for any help! Cheers

  I'm not an Apache expert but need to make a small change to a web server. We are introducing a "jump page" URL that is different from a primary URL (for tracking reasons). /productA/index.html /productA/jump_index.html Basically i want to log that jump_index.html was requested and then return index.html. I don't want the client to wait 8 seconds or so for a redirect. How should we be handling this? Simply symlink (or alias) the file in the filesystem? Use mod_alias Alias Match (if so how exactly)? something better still? We have a very old application based on Omnis7 that needs to create and read/write files on drive C: when running as a restricted user. In Windows XP to give this permission is quite trivial using cacls. cacls C:\ /G Everyone:(C) The equivalent icacls in Windows 7 will not work. icacls C:\ /Grant Everyone:(M) I have also tried the following. icacls C:\ /Grant Everyone:(F) icacls C:\ /Grant Domain\user:(F) trying to create file with a restricted user gives this C:\>copy nul text.txt Access is denied. 0 file(s) copied. After applying the icacls permissions above the result changes to this. C:\>copy nul text.txt A required privilege is not held by the client. 0 file(s) copied. Is this an issue with the way I am applying the permissions? Or is Window 7 being extremely strict?

• Postgresql spawning a ridiculous number of postmaster processes

  For some reason postgres is spawning 700 postmaster processes for handling database requests and the postgres log file if full of 'unexpected EOF on client connection', 'incomplete startup packet' and 'sorry, too many clients already'. netstat tells me that all the open connections are local and I'm pretty sure are coming from postgres internally. This particular instance has been running just fine for the last 230 days or so and nothing has changed configuration wise. Any thoughts on where I should be looking to try and resolve this issue? This is my first time diagnosing a problem like this so if there is any steps I can take to help narrow down the cause that would be helpful as well.

  Hi I want to write a bash script that when called shuts down another computer on the lan. Maybe using ssh? The other computer is an ubuntu machine. Now I'm not sure how to send e.g. a sudo shutdown -h now command from withing a bash script to the ssh after logging in. Also I'm not sure how to obtain the rights for the sudo command, hence how to handle the communication between the server and client from within a bash script. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

  Is bonding the preferred way of implementing ISP redundancy? In the texts I've seen, bond device has a netmask, gateway of it's own. How can this be obtained if there are two different gateways from two uplinks, which one to choose? Do I need any special routing rules to go with it or does simply configuring separate interfaces (using Debian, /etc/network/interfaces), i.e eth1, eth2 for their corresponding uplinks and bonding them to bond0 handle routing automatically? If I want to NAT client machines, do they use bond device's IP as a gateway? Does the bond0 device is the device that goes into iptables nat rules? Thanks

• Windows Server 2008R2 IIS7.5, Requests getting 401 status

  We have a web site running in windows server 2008r2 iis7.5 and we are seeing several errors reported from our global error handler saying that "Request Timed Out". I matched up one to the IIS log file and see the request took 135116 (presumably milliseconds) had an sc-status of 401 an sc-sub0status of 0 and an sc-win32-status of 64. 2 requests failed in these way but lots of surrounding requests (1979 successful requests vs 2 fails) for the same user went through perfectly fine- with the same cs-username which makes a 401 seem a little odd. The target of the requests is an ASP.Net web service's web method called by the .net client library- it's called a lot of times per user (3 times per second) to keep a page updated. We're getting some users reportng seeing a freezing effect and I think this may be the cause, any ideas? Peter

• Migrating Forms to Java or ADF, the truth and no FUD

  The question about migrating Forms to Java (or ADF or APEX) comes up time and time again.  I wanted to pull some core information together in a single blog post to address this question. The first question I always ask is "WHY" - Forms may still be a viable option for you so "if it ain't broke don't fix it".  Bottom line is whatever anyone tells you, its going to be a considerable effort and cost to migrate from Forms to something else so the business is going to want to know WHY you spend all those hard earned dollars switching from something that might have been serving you quite adequately. Second point, if you are going to switch, I would encourage you NOT to look at building a Forms clone.  So many times I see people trying to build an ADF application and EXACTLY mimic the Forms model - ADF is NOT a Forms clone.  You should be building to the sweet spot of your target technology, not your 20 year old client/server technology.  This is also the chance for the business to embrace change, so maybe look at new processes, channels and technology options that weren't available when you first developed your Forms applications. • courier-imap w mysql : share a folder between 2 virtual users on debian

  Hi I have a working courier-imap server on my Debian Etch private server ; users are virtual, authentificatin goes through mysql. It's been working good for years. I would like to share an imap folder between 2 users. I thought I would just have to do something like this : cd path/to/mailusers/dir ln -s path/to/user1/maildir/.folder_to_be_synched path/to/user2/maildir/ After I entered the command, I found that user2 saw a new folder in its imap client, but the folder appeared empty. It is not a permission problem because all the virtual users have the same permissions on the file system. Any idea what I could do ? thanks

• With dnsmasq as the DNS server, 'dig' succeeds, but 'nslookup' and 'ping' fail

  I installed dnsmasq on a machine of mine (It's a Kubuntu 12.04 LTS), backed only by /etc/hosts (no connection to the Internet until later). Now, when I'm on the same machine as the dnsmasq - or any other machine on the server, I can dig mymachine and get 192.168.0.1, but if I try to nslookup mymachine, I get: >> connection timed out; no servers could be reached Tried also nslookup mymachine.mynicedomain.org - didn't work either. pinging fails. How can I the DNS lookups to work? Is the problem with the nsswitch entries? The dnsmasq configuration? • High availability for Windows Service under Windows Server 2003

  Hi. I have a following situation: I need to deploy a windows service that listens for incoming request on tcp port (basically WCF service). I have a High Availability requirement - the service must be deployed on two servers and if the service stops (only the service, not the whole server) on one server, all the requests must be redirected to the second one. For me it looks like a basic failover scenario. How can I achieve this on Windows Server 2003? Should I use Microsoft Cluster Service or Network Load Balancing? The important part is that the process of swapping the servers should not concern the clients (the client must see only single address / single host or domain name). Thanks in advance for help.

My situation is I running unison with cron where script below : */1 * * * * /usr/bin/unison /dev/null 2&1 and default profile like below : root = /var/www root = ssh://web02.example.com//var/www auto=true batch=true confirmbigdel=true fastcheck=true group=true owner=true prefer=newer silent=true times=true So in every minutes will syncronized www folder . My problem are : I upload file with size bigger than 10 MB to www from client with user1 permission where www folder is user1 owner. file in processing uploading then unison running in that minute and suddenly file upload owner changed to root:root When I editing file in www folder then I save when unison running, file owner changed to root:root where should be user1:user1 Is there anyone know about this problem?

• Discuss: PLs are characterised by which (iso)morphisms are implemented

  I am interested to hear discussion of the proposition summarised in the title. As we know programming language constructions admit a vast number of isomorphisms. In some languages in some places in the translation process some of these isomorphisms are implemented, whilst others require code to be written to implement them. For example, in my language Felix, the isomorphism between a type T and a tuple of one element of type T is implemented, meaning the two types are indistinguishable (identical). Similarly, a tuple of N values of the same type is not merely isomorphic to an array, it is an array: the isomorphism is implemented by the compiler. Many other isomorphisms are not implemented for example there is an isomorphism expressed by the following client code: match v with | ((?x,?y),?z = x,(y,z) // Felix match v with | (x,y), - x,(y,z) (* Ocaml *) As another example, a type constructor C of int in Felix may be used directly as a function, whilst in Ocaml you must write a wrapper: let c x = C x Another isomorphism Felix implements is the elimination of unit values, including those in tuples: Felix can do this because (most) polymorphic values are monomorphised which can be done because it is a whole program analyser, Ocaml, for example, cannot do this easily because it supports separate compilation. For the same reason Felix performs type-class dispatch at compile time whilst Haskell passes around dictionaries. There are some quite surprising issues here. For example an array is just a tuple, and tuples can be indexed at run time using a match and returning a value of a corresponding sum type. Indeed, to be correct the index used is in fact a case of unit sum with N summands, rather than an integer. Yet, in a real implementation, if the tuple is an array the index is replaced by an integer with a range check, and the result type is replaced by the common argument type of all the constructors: two isomorphisms are involved here, but they're implemented partly in the compiler translation and partly at run time.

• Difference between two kinds of Bing URL Referers

  Most of the referral URLS that I get from Bing have the following syntax: http://www.bing.com/search?q=keywords+keywords&[some other variables] However I just noticed that maybe 10-20% of them are coming in like this: http://www.bing.com/url?source=search&[some other variables]&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.example.com/user-landing-page-on-my-site&yrktarget=_top&q=keywords+keywords&[some other variables] The first syntax gives me the keywords the user typed in, but the second actually gives me the keywords the user typed in and their landing page on my site. I was originally unaware of this second kind altogether because I have a customized referral report that filters out URLs containing my domain. But now that I noticed them I want to know why they occur to see if I can get more to occur this way because the second syntax contains more valuable information. If I go to one of the first URLs, it gives me a typical Bing query page. The second URLs seem to just redirect me to the Bing home page. I'm not sure if it has to do with the kind of search being performed (I also get a few http://www.bing.com/shopping/search?q= referers) or some other metric. Does anyone know what causes some referral URLs from Bing to have the /search?q syntax and others to have the /url?source syntax? P.S. I have verified that I am getting both kinds of URLs from non-advertising clicks. P.P.S. I am not talking about data in Google Analytics or similar software but the raw $_SERVER['HTTP_REFERER'] value coming from the client's original request.

• Why does apt-get install Skype easily while aptitude complains about MAJOR dependency errors?

  I was trying to install Skype on Ubuntu 13.04, from the Canonical repositories. With apt-get it worked easily, while aptitude had a huge problem with dependencies and proposed a complicated solution. Why is this so?   I use MS Outlook as email client. When I receive email from certain email addresses(sender within my company/domain itself), and I use the reply button option to reply it, all the menus like - Font type, Font size, Text color, Bold, Italics, Text indentation, Bullets, numbering, are disabled. It doesn't allow me to use any of the above features. This happens only for some email id's where I receive mail from. Not all. Then when I checked in the message properties, it was Plain Text , rather than HTML. But shouldn't outlook allow me the formatting of the messages I reply/compose based on My settings which are HTML? How can I enable to have Rich text formatting enabled while I reply to a text mail?

  I use a MySQL database running on a Windows box, and for performance reasons I'm connecting to it using named pipes. The (Java) application using the database (through Hibernate) can let the connection lie idle for quite a long time, which causes the connection to fail with the following message: com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.CommunicationsException: The last packet successfully received from the server was 33 558 297 milliseconds ago. The last packet sent successfully to the server was 33 558 297 milliseconds ago. is longer than the server configured value of 'wait_timeout'. You should consider either expiring and/or testing connection validity before use in your application, increasing the server configured values for client timeouts, or using the Connector/J connection property 'autoReconnect=true' to avoid this problem. autoReconnect unfortunately has no effect (and neither does autoReconnectForPools), but the wait_timeout docs state that wait_timeout only applies "to TCP/IP and Unix socket file connections, not to connections made via named pipes, or shared memory". How can I change the wait_timeout for named pipes?

Luckily, Mix has exposed the ‘10 sessions via OData at http://api.visitmix.com/OData.svc, now all I have to do is slap together a bit of code to fetch the videos. Step 1 (cut a hole in the box) Create a new console application and add a new service reference.
