• Javafx Layout problem with VBox & HBoxes

• WCF operationcontract with List type unavailable in (Silverlight) client

  This is the first time I have tried returning a List of data to a Silverlight client, so I'm having trouble getting the client to recognize this operationcontract. All others are fine. I have a method on the server called ReadOwFileData that needs to return a List. ReadOwFileDataCompletedEventArgs shows up in the Object Browser in the client, but not ReadOwFileDataAsync. What I want is similar to the tutorial here. The Dictionary collection type on the client is set to System.Collections.Generic.List. I tried deleting and recreating the service reference. Web.Config on the server is using basicHttpBinding. • How to style "form" field labels in Windows Phone 7?

  Is there any standards guidance on how to style field labels next to form fields in windows phone 7 silverlight applications? For example, let's say I have a StackPanel with the TextBlock label and a TextBox for data entry. Currently I am using the default TextBlock Margin included in the PhoneTextSubtleStyle ("12,0,12,0"), and using a Margin of "0,-12,0,0" to push the TextBox up closer to the label: <StackPanel HorizontalAlignment="Left"> <TextBlock VerticalAlignment="Center" Text="Name" Style="{StaticResource PhoneTextSubtleStyle}" /> <TextBox Text="{Binding ItemName, Mode=TwoWay}" TextChanged="TextBox_TextChanged" VerticalAlignment="Center" Width="433" Margin="0,-12,0,0" /> </StackPanel> Note that the TextBox seems to have some internal padding of 12 pixels to the left and right, so that the TextBlock label and the TextBox control visually line up perfectly on the left. The problem is, I see existing apps with widely varying conventions for field label styling. Some do not do the negative margin adjustment, like I have above. Some don't. Some appear to override the label TextBlock Margin so that it is indented an additional 12 pixels on the left (i.e. "24,0,12,0" instead of the default "12,0,12,0"). Some apps put the labels to the left of the fields themselves (I hate that). Is there some standard design guidance on field labels in Windows Phone 7? I read through the design template PDF and could only determine that the field labels should be upper case on the first word (preferably only one word labels), and should NOT have a colon at the end. I didn't see anything with regards to margins or alignment between the label and the field.

• How to construct objects based on XML code?

  I have XML files that are representation of a portion of HTML code. Those XML files also have widget declarations. Example XML file: <message id="msg"> <p> <Widget name="foo" type="SomeComplexWidget" attribute="value"> inner text here, sets another attribute or inserts another widget to the tree if needed... </Widget> </p> </message> I have a main Widget class that all of my widgets inherit from. The question is how would I create it? Here are my options: Create a compile time tool that will parse the XML file and create the necessary code to bind the widgets to the needed objects. Advantages: No extra run-time overhead induced to the system. It's easy to bind setters. Disadvantages: Adds another step to the build chain. Hard to maintain as every widget in the system should be added to the parser. Use of macros to bind the widgets. Complex code Find a method to register all widgets into a factory automatically. Advantages: All of the binding is done completely automatically. Easier to maintain then option 1 as every new widget will only need to call a WidgetFactory method that registers it. Disadvantages: No idea how to bind setters without introducing a maintainability nightmare. Adds memory and run-time overhead. Complex code What do you think is better? Can you guys suggest a better solution?

• Jquery plugin seems to leak memory no matter what I do

  I've recently been tasked with ferreting out some memory leaks in an application for my work. I've narrowed down one of the big leaks to a jquery plugin. It appears we're using a modified version of a popular context menu jquery plugin. It looks like one of the developers before me attempted to add a destroy method. I noticed it wasn't very well written and attempted to rewrite. Here's the meat of my destroy method: if (menu.childMenus) { for (var i = 0; i < menu.childMenus.length; i++) { $(menu.childMenus[i]).destroy(menu.childMenus[i], 'contextmenu'); } } var recursiveUnbind = function(node) { $(node).unbind(); //$(node).empty().remove(); $.each(node, function(obj) { recursiveUnbind(obj); }); }; $.each(menu, function() { recursiveUnbind(menu); }); $(menu).empty().remove(); In my mind this code should blow away all the jquery event binding and remove the dom elements, yet still the plugin leaks gobs of memory in IE7. • LINQ - 'Could not translate expression' with previously used and proven query condition

  I am fairly new to LINQ and can't get my head around some inconsistency in behaviour. Any knowledgeable input would be much appreciated. I see similar issues on SO and elsewhere but they don't seem to help. I have a very simple setup - a company table and an addresses table. Each company can have 0 or more addresses, and if 0 one must be specified as the main address. I'm trying to handle the cases where there are 0 addresses, using an outer join and altering the select statement accordingly. Please note I'm currently binding the output straight to a GridView so I would like to keep all processing within the query. The following DOES work IQueryable query = from comp in context.Companies join addr in context.Addresses on comp.CompanyID equals addr.CompanyID into outer // outer join companies to addresses table to include companies with no address from addr in outer.DefaultIfEmpty() where (addr.IsMain == null ? true : addr.IsMain) == true // if a company has no address ensure it is not ruled out by the IsMain condition - default to true if null select new { comp.CompanyID, comp.Name, AddressID = (addr.AddressID == null ? -1 : addr.AddressID), // use -1 to represent a company that has no addresses MainAddress = String.Format("{0}, {1}, {2} {3} ({4})", addr.Address1, addr.City, addr.Region, addr.PostalCode, addr.Country) }; but this displays an empty address in the GridView as ", , ()" So I updated the MainAddress field to be MainAddress = (addr.AddressID == null ? "" : String.Format("{0}, {1}, {2} {3} ({4})", addr.Address1, addr.City, addr.Region, addr.PostalCode, addr.Country)) and now I'm getting the Could not translate expression error and a bunch of spewey auto-generated code in the error which means very little to me. The condition I added to MainAddress is no different to the working condition on AddressID, so can anybody tell me what's going on here? Any help greatly appreciated.

• Why am I needing to click twice on a WPF listbox item in order to fire a command?

  Hi, I'm trying to make a standard WPF listbox be dynamically filled, and for each item in the list box to launch a command when clicked. Currently I have a working listbox, which can be filled and each item will fire the correct command, but in order to fire the command I have to click the list item twice. i.e, Click once to select the item, then click on the actual text to fire the command. As the list is dynamically created, I had to create a data template for the list items: <ListBox.ItemTemplate> <DataTemplate> <TextBlock Margin="4,2,4,2"> <Hyperlink TextDecorations="None" Command="MyCommands:CommandsRegistry.OpenPanel"> <TextBlock Text="{Binding}" Margin="4,2,4,2"/> </Hyperlink> </TextBlock> </DataTemplate> </ListBox.ItemTemplate> Basically, how do I remove the need to click twice? I have tried to use event triggers to fire the click event on the hyperlink element when the list box item is selected, but I can't get it to work. Or, is there a better approach to dynamically fill a listbox and attach commands to each list item? Thanks

I want to write a base class with a virtual function and then redefine that function in the child class. then demonstrate dynamic binding in my driver program. But I just couldn't get it to work. • Bind two images together to be dragged

  I'm looking for some help with a script to drag two images together at once. I currently have a script that allows me to drag thumbnail images into a collection bin to be saved later. However, some of my thumbnails have an image positioned over the top of them to represent these thumbnail images as "unknown" plants. I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction as to how I would go about binding these two images together to be dragged. • JQUERY - how to get updated value after ajax removes data from within it?

  I have a an element with thumbnails. I allow users to sort their display order (which fires off an update to the DB via ajax). I also allow them to delete images (which, after deletion, fires off a request to update the display order for all remaining images). My problem is with binding or live I think, but I don't know where to apply it. The array fired off upon delete contains ALL the ids for the images that were there on page load. The issue is that after they delete an image the array STILL contains the original ids (including the one that was deleted) so it is obviously not refreshing the value of the element after ajax has removed things from inside it. I need to tell it to go get the refreshed contents... From what I have been reading, this is normal but I don't understand how to tie it into my routine. • Android Service Testing with messages

  I have a service which does its work(perform network operation) depending upon the type of message(message.what) property of the message. Then it returns the resoponse, also as a message to the requesting component(depending upon the message.replyTo). So, i am trying to write the testcases.. But how????? My Architecture of service is like this: 1) A component(ex. Activity) bounds to the service. 2) The component sends message to the Service(using Messenger). 3) The service has a nested class that handles the messages and execute the network call and returns a response as message to the sender(who initially sent the message and using its replyTo property). Now to test this.. i am using Junit test cases.. So , in that .. 1) in setUp() i am binding to the service.. 2) on testBusinessLogic() . i am sending the message to the service .. Now problem is where to get the response message.

  I am trying to create a self join table that represents a list of customers who can refer each other (perhaps to a product or a program). I am trying to limit my model to just one class, "Customer". However, I keep getting an empty array when accessing referrals: @customer.referrals ... returns []. I ran binding.pry to see what SQL was being run, given a customer who has a "referer" and should have several referrals. This is the SQL being executed. • "Error in the Site Data Web Service." when performing crawl

  Installed SharePoint Services v3 (SP2, october 2009 cumulative updates, Language Pack), attached to a content database I had previously (all works). Installed Search server 2008 Express (with language pack) on top of WSS and crawl does not work. However it works for newly created web application + database. Was playing around with accounts, permissions to try get it working. Currently I have WSS_Crawler account with such permissions: Office Search Server runs with WSS_Crawler account Config database has read permissions for WSS_Crawler Content database has read permissions for WSS_Crawler WSS_Crawler is owner of search database. Added WSS_Crawler to SQL server browser user group and administrator Yes, i'v given more permissions than needed, but it doesn't even work with that and i don't know if its permission problem or what. Crawl log says there is Error in the Site Data Web Service., nothing more. There were known issues with a similar error: Error in the Site Data Web Service. (Value does not fall within the expected range.), but this is not the case as thats an old issue and i hope it has been included in SP2... Logs are from olders to newest (descending order).   I am writing a program that opens LPT1 and writes a value to it. The WriteFile function is returning an error code of 1167, "The device is not connected". The Device Manager shows that LPT1 is present. I have a cable connected between a development board and the PC. The cable converts JTAG pin signals to signals on the parallel port. Power is applied and the cable is connected between the development board and the PC. The development board is powered on. I am using: Windows XP MS Visual Studio 2008, C language, console application, debug environment.   I have a strange issue with IIS 7. Sometimes it seems to return a 304 instead of a 200. • How to ask memcached auth connection by sasl and pam?

  I use memcached in a untrust network, so I try to use sasl and pam to auth connection to memcached. I installed sasl and pam module, compiled and installed memcached with sasl enabled. Also I created db and table for pam user. I run: $ sudo testsaslauthd -u tester -p abc123 -s /etc/pam.d/memcached 0: OK "Success." where the tester and abc123 is the authed user in db, which I inserted. But my python script cannot be authed, always authentication failed returned. It seems it dose not use pam to authentication, still use sasldb, because when I add user by: $ sudo saslpasswd2 -a memcached -c tester and input password: abc123, It can passed.   Hello, I created install script that will install SQL Server 2008 R2 on windows XP SP3, windows vista and windows 7. One of the command that i used in the installation is for silent installation of SQL Server 2008 R2. When i install it on windows XP everything works just fine but when i try to install it on Windows 7 i get an error. What am I doing wrong?
