• Home automation using Arduino / XMPP client for Arduino

  I am trying to setup a system for automating certain tasks in my home. I am thinking of a solution wherein a server side application would be able to send/receive commands/data to Arduino (attached with Arduino Ethernet Shield) via the web. Here the Arduino may both act as a sensor interface to the server application or command executor interface for the server app. E.g. (user story): The overhead water tank in my house has a water level sensor attached with Arduino (attached with Arduino Ethernet Shield). Another Arduino (attached with Arduino Ethernet Shield) is attached with a relay/latch. This relay/latch is then connected to a water pump. Now the server side application on the web is able to get/receive water level information from the Arduino on the water tank. Depending on the water level information received, the web application should send suitable signals/commands to Arduino on water pump to switch 'ON' or switch 'OFF' the water pump. Now for such a system to work across the web, I am thinking of using one of the type of solutions in order of my priority: Using XMPP for communication between server application and Arduino. Using HTTP polling. Using HTTP hanging GET. For solution number 1, I need to implement a XMPP client that would reside on Arduino. Is it possible to write a XMPP client small enough to reside on an Arduino? If yes what are the minimum possible XMPP client functionality that I need to write for Arduino, so that it would be able to contact XMPP servers solutions like GTalk, etc.? For solution number 2 and 3 I need guidance in implementation. Also which solution would be cost effective and easily extendable?

• Dynamically specify and change a Silverlight DataGrid's columns during runtime (MVVM)

  What's the best method of dynamically specifying DataGrid columns in the Silverlight DataGrid control at runtime following the MVVM pattern? What I'd like to do would be bind the "DataGrid.Columns" property to a property in my ViewModel so that, if the user adds/removes columns, I simply update the ViewModel property and the DataGrid would change. Problem is, the "DataGrid.Columns" property can't be bound to (I don't think). Because this property isn't available nor is the DataGrid control itself available at the ViewModel level, my current approach is to step outside of the MVVM pattern for this particular implementation and capture certain events in View's code-behind using MVVM Light's Messenger class and then talk directly with the DataGrid control to achieve this capability. I know this is a general statement to this approach without details but is there an easier way... or maybe not so much easier, but a better way that adheres to the MVVM pattern a little better? It's driving me crazy that the DataGrid control's Columns property can't be bound... seems like such a simple thing. FYI - Before it's suggested to use AutoGenerateColumns = True, the class being bound for each item in the collection that's bound to DataGrid.ItemsSource does not have individual properties to identify what is bound to the columns... it's a collection property that contains the columns in order to keep them completely dynamic so that particular path is out. Also, handling the AutoGeneratingColumns and using e.Cancel to show/hide columns is also iffy for this same reason (I think).

  Hi SO'ers, I'm currently trying to access Active Directory via the dbms_ldap API in Pl/Sql (Oracle). The trouble is that I'm not able to connect with my own username and password or anynoymously. However, in C# I can connect anonymously with this code : DirectoryEntry ldap = new DirectoryEntry("LDAP://Hostname"); DirectorySearcher searcher = new DirectorySearcher(ldap); searcher.Filter = "(SAMAccountName=username)"; SearchResult result = searcher.FindOne(); If I try to connect anonymously in Oracle, I only get the error(ORA-31202 : LDAP client/server error) when I try to search (and the result code for the bind is SUCCESS)... my_session := dbms_ldap.init('HOST','389'); retval := dbms_ldap.simple_bind_s(my_session, '', ''); retval := dbms_ldap.search_s(my_session, ldap_base, dbms_ldap.scope_subtree, 'objectclass=*', my_attrs, 0, my_message); Why is the anonymous connection is C# works but doesn't work in Pl/Sql? Do you have any other idea to connect to Active Directory via Oracle? Help me reunite them together. Thanks. • UIView drawRect: when you draw a line, the rect area will be clear so the previous drawing is gone

  It is quite hard to tell so I upload an image to show my problem: http://i42.tinypic.com/2eezamo.jpg Basically in drawRect, I will draw the line from touchesMoved as finger touches and I will call "needsDisplayInRect" for redraw. But I found that the first line is done, the second line will clear the rect part, so some previouse drawing is gone.   Hi There Stackoverflow, I am running into some problems while trying to get DAAB from Enterprise library 5.0 running. I have followed the steps as per the tutorial, but am getting errors... 1) Download / install enterprise library 2) Add references to the blocks I need (common / data) 3) Imports Imports Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Common Imports Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Data 4) Through the enterprise library config software. I open up the web.config from my site. I then click Blocks, then Add data settings... fill in my details and save / close 5) I then (thinking setup is complete) try to get an instance of the database via Dim db As Database = DatabaseFactory.CreateDatabase() 6) I compile and receive the following error: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Data, Version=5.0.414.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. • Changing the Android emulator locale automatically

  For automated testing (using Hudson) I have a script that generates a bunch of emulators for many combinations of Android OS version, screen resolution, screen density and language. This works fine, except for the language part. I need to find a way to change the Android system locale automatically. Here's some approaches I can think of, in order of preference: Extracting/editing/repacking a QEMU image directly before starting the emulator Running some sort of system-locale-changing APK on the emulator after startup Changing the locale settings on the emulator filesystem after startup Changing the locale settings in some SQLite DB on the emulator after startup Running a key sequence (via the emulator's telnet interface) that would open the settings app and change the locale Manually starting the emulator for each platform version, changing the locale by hand in the settings, saving it and archiving the images for later deployment Any ideas whether this can be done, either via the above methods or otherwise? Do you know where locale settings are persisted to/read from by the system? Solution: Thanks to dtmilano's info about the relevant properties, and some further investigation on my part, I came up with a solution even better and simpler simpler than all the ideas above!   Hi Guys, i have developed on IPhone application and submitted to App store. But my application got rejected based on below criteria. Thank you for submitting your yyyyyyyy application. We have reviewed your application and have determined that it cannot be posted to the App Store at this time because it is not using the HTTP Live Streaming protocol to broadcast streaming video. HTTP Live Streaming is required when streaming video feeds over the cellular network, in order to have an optimal user experience and utilize cellular best practices. This protocol automatically determines bandwidth available to users and adjusts the bandwidth appropriately, even as bandwidth streams change. This allows you the flexibility to have as many streams as you like, as long as 64 kbps is set as the baseline feed. In my apps i have to stream prerecorded m4v and mp3 files from my server. I used MPMoviePlayerController to stream and play those videos / audio. How to implement the HTTP Live Streaming Protocol in my apps? Also can i get some sample code? Thanks in advance!

  I have three models: class Book < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :collections has_many :users, :through => :collections end class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :collections has_many :books, :through => :collections end class Collection < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :book belongs_to :user end I'm trying to display a list of the books and have a link to either add or remove from the user's collection. I can't quite figure out the best syntax to do this. For example, if I do the following: Controller class BooksController < ApplicationController def index @books = Book.all end end View ... <% if book.users.include?(current_user) %> ... or obviously the inverse... ... <% if current_user.books.include?(book) %> ... Then queries are sent for each book to check on that include? which is wasteful. I was thinking of adding the users or collections to the :include on the Book.all, but I'm not sure this is the best way. Effectively all I need is the book object and just a boolean column of whether or not the current user has the book in their collection, but I'm not sure how to forumlate the query in order to do that.   I have several User Controls in a project, and one of them retrieves items from an XML, creates objects of the type "ClassItem" and should notify the other UserControl information about those items. Hence, each time a new ClassItem object is created, this should fire the Notifications for all the UserControls that are "bind" to the "ItemsCollection" notifications defined in Class2. Yet the code in Class2 doesn't even seem to be run :-( and there are no notifications of course... Am I mistaken in any of the assumptions I've done, or am I missing something? • How to use SMO.Scripter to generate a "full-script" of DB?

  What I'm trying to do is a very simple task; I'd like to create a script to generate a database along with tables, SPs and UDFs. This is done with a couple of clicks on SSMS interface. However db.Script() only scripts CREATE DATABASE. Ok, so I iterate over objects one by one and script them individually. Now, what I have is an arbitrary order of CREATEs naturally failing during execution because dependent objects aren't created first. Ok so I set WithDependencies flag so dependent objects ARE scripted first. However this causes redundant CREATE scripts for objects that are already created, and causes around 20x growth in SQL file and generation time. Not to mention the errors hit during execution. I don't know if there is a way to mark objects "already walked in dependency tree", it doesn't seem likely. I might be missing a bigger picture somewhere, but MSDN recommends "Scripter" to generate scripts like the one I want. I had used Transfer class before to transfer table definitions but it fails to create a failsafe script. It doesn't make sense to use a Transfer object to generate a script anyway. I want to do this the way it should be done, and without losing my faith in SMO.

• Microsoft JScript runtime error: Sys.InvalidOperationException: Two components with the same id.

  I'm working in ASP .NET dynamic data. In one of my edit controls I wanted to allow the user to add records from a related table to the current page. (Literally, if you are on the orders page, you would be allowed to add a new customer to the system on this page as well, and then associate it with that order). So, I have a DetailsView set to InsertMode, nested inside of an UpdatePanel, which is shown by a ModalPopupExtender which is invoked when 'add new' is clicked. This doohickey works the first time i execute this process, that is, a customer is added (and i update the dropdown list as well). However, I realized it didn't work (properly) again until I refreshed the entire page. When I attached my debugger, my worst fears were realized (ok, not really). But an exception was being thrown: "Microsoft JScript runtime error: Sys.InvalidOperationException: Two components with the same id." Which seemed to be complaining about a Calendar Extender Control that is part of the details view. Any guidance on what's going on here would be great. Thanks.

• Random MKAnnotationView is tapped when there are overlapping annotations

  I cannot believe this bug/problem doesn't have any solution! In my iphone application, I'm using MapKit with MKMapView and custom MKAnnotationView. The problem is when annotations overlap (in my app, annotations are photos and those photos may overlap) and when you tap on the annotation that appears on front, other annotation (on back) receives the event (seems to be random). I didn't find any way to send the event to the front annotation. Z ordering and Order of overlapping annotations questions on stackoverflow did not help me that much. Please any idea is welcome (even ugly ones)! Any ideas? Why do I keep on seeing some old version of regexes when I try to load that page even though I changed my urls.py?

• .htaccess - RewriteRules working, but browser address bar displaying full (unfriendly) URL

  Hey there, Haven't been able to find a solution to this around the net or these forums - apologise if I've missed something! My .htaccess RewriteRules are working well - have search-engine and user -friendly links in my web pages, and unfriendly database URLs running hidden in the background. Except when I added a RewriteRule to add "www." to the front of URLs if the user didn't enter it - to ensure only one appears in search engines. Here's what now happening, and I can't figure out why! My friendly URL structure for content is like this, and the database query string uses the first "importantword": www.example.com/importantword-nonimportantword/ .htaccess snippet: Options +FollowSymLinks Options -Indexes RewriteEngine on RewriteOptions MaxRedirects=10 RewriteBase / RewriteRule ^/$ index.php [L] RewriteRule ^(.*)-(.*)/overview/$ detail.php?categoryID=$1 [L] RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.example.com$ RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.example.com/$1 [L] What's happening since I added the last 2 lines: CASE 1: user types (or clicks) www.example.com/honda-vehicle/overview/ - Works correctly - They are taken to the correct page and the browser URL bar says: www.example.com/honda-vehicles/overview/ CASE 2: user types example.com - Works correctly - They are taken to www.example.com and the browser URL bar says: www.example.com CASE 3: user types (or clicks) example.com/honda-vehicles/overview/ i.e. without the prefix "www" - Does NOT work correctly - They are taken to the right page, but the browser URL bar displays the unfriendly URL: www.example.com/detail.php?categoryID=honda I figure there's some issue with the order of the RewriteRules, but it's doing my head in trying to logically step through it and figure it out! Any assistance at all or pointers would be most appreciated!

• MSTest: Problems with DeploymentItem attribute

  Hi, I'm currently maintaining an "old" system written in C#.net, removing some obsolete features and doing some refactoring. Thanks god, the previous guy wrote some unit tests (MSTests). I quite comfortable with JUnit tests, but didn't do yet much with MSTests. The test methods have a DeploymentItem attribute, specifying a text file which is parsed by the business logic method that is being tested and a 2nd DeploymentItem where just a path has been specified containing a bunch of TIF files that have to be deployed too. [TestMethod()] [DeploymentItem(@"files\valid\valid_entries.txt")] [DeploymentItem(@"files\tif\")] public void ExistsTifTest() { ... } The tests worked before, but now I had to change the names of the TIF files contained in the \files\tif directory. According to a rule, the TIF filenames have to match a certain pattern which is also checked by the ExistsTifTest() method. Now I had to change the filenames in order to adapt them to the new requirements and suddently the TIF files are no more being deployed as before. Can someone give me a hint why this happens or what may be the cause? The same thing happens also if I add a new text-file say "my2ndTest.txt" beside the "valid_entries.txt" in the \files\valid\ directory with the according DeploymentItem attribute on the test method. The file doesn't get deployed? I got the images now deployed by defining the deployment path directly in the testrunconfig, but I'd like to understand why these things happen or why for instance my new file "my2ndTest.txt" doesn't get deployed while the others do. • Google Datastore w/ JDO: Access Times?

  I'm hitting what appears (to me) strange behavior when I pull data from the google datastore over JDO. In particular, the query executes quickly (say 100 ms), but finding the size of the resulting List< takes about one second! Indeed, whatever operation I try to perform on the resulting list takes about a second. Has anybody seen this behavior? Is it expected? Unusual? Any way around it?   Is it possible to create a web service operation using primitive or basic Java types when using the Jaxb2Marschaller in spring-ws? • Entity Framework 4.0 Databinding with sorting not working

  I want to do something that I thought would be very simple. I want to bind a generated Entity Framework EntityCollection to a WPF DataGrid. I also want this grid to be sortable. I have tried all kinds of things to make this happen, including using a CollectionViewSource. However, nothing seems to work. Using a normal CollectionViewSource around the EntityCollection gives me: 'System.Windows.Data.BindingListCollectionView' view does not support sorting. Ok...strange. I would have thought this would work. Next on the CollectionViewSource, I try setting: CollectionViewType="ListCollectionView" Great, sorting now works. But wait, I can't add or remove entities using the grid now, presumably because ListCollectionView doesn't support this with an entity framework context. So, I guess I need to capture events coming out of the datagrid in order to add or remove entities manually from my context. Now I can't find an event to capture to detect an add...! Why is this so hard? This should be the standard "demo" case that Microsoft should have designed around. Any ideas?

• SQLiteQueryBuilder.buildQuery not using selectArgs?

  Alright, I'm trying to query a sqlite database. I was trying to be good and use the query method of SQLiteDatabase and pass in the values in the selectArgs parameter to ensure everything got properly escaped, but it wouldn't work. I never got any rows returned (no errors, either). I started getting curious about the SQL that this generated so I did some more poking around and found SQLiteQueryBuilder (and apparently Stack Overflow doesn't handle links with parentheses in them well, so I can't link to the anchor for the buildQuery method), which I assume uses the same logic to generate the SQL statement. I did this: SQLiteQueryBuilder builder = new SQLiteQueryBuilder(); builder.setTables(BarcodeDb.Barcodes.TABLE_NAME); String sql = builder.buildQuery(new String[] { BarcodeDb.Barcodes.ID, BarcodeDb.Barcodes.TIMESTAMP, BarcodeDb.Barcodes.TYPE, BarcodeDb.Barcodes.VALUE }, "? = '?' AND ? = '?'", new String[] { BarcodeDb.Barcodes.VALUE, barcode.getValue(), BarcodeDb.Barcodes.TYPE, barcode.getType()}, null, null, null, null); Log.d(tag, "Query is: " + sql); The SQL that gets logged at this point is: SELECT _id, timestamp, type, value FROM barcodes WHERE (? = '?' AND ? = '?') However, here's what the documentation for SQLiteQueryBuilder.buildQuery says about the selectAgs parameter: You may include ?s in selection, which will be replaced by the values from selectionArgs, in order that they appear in the selection. ...but it isn't working. Any ideas?

  Hello everybody, I'm new in Android development and I have the next question/problem. I'm playing around with the MediaRecorder class to record just audio from the microphone. I'm following the steps indicated in the official site: http://developer.android.com/reference/android/media/MediaRecorder.html So I have a method that initializes and configure the MediaRecorder object in order to start recording. Here you have the code: this.mr = new MediaRecorder(); this.mr.setAudioSource(MediaRecorder.AudioSource.MIC); this.mr.setOutputFormat(MediaRecorder.OutputFormat.THREE_GPP); this.mr.setAudioEncoder(MediaRecorder.AudioEncoder.AMR_NB); this.mr.setOutputFile(this.path + this.fileName); try { this.mr.prepare(); } catch (IllegalStateException e) { Log.d("Syso", e.toString()); e.printStackTrace(); } catch (IOException e) { Log.d("Syso", e.toString()); e.printStackTrace(); } When I execute this code in the simulator, thanks to logcat, I can see that the method setAudioSource(MediaRecorder.AudioSource.MIC) gives the next error (with the tag audio_ipunt) when it is called: ERROR/audio_input(34): unsupported parameter: x-pvmf/media-input-node/cap-config-interface;valtype=key_specific_value ERROR/audio_input(34): VerifyAndSetParameter failed And then when the method prepare() is called, I get the another error again: ERROR/PVOMXEncNode(34): PVMFOMXEncNode-Audio_AMRNB::DoPrepare(): Got Component OMX.PV.amrencnb handle If I start to record bycalling the method start()... I get lots of messages saying: AudioFlinger(34):RecordThread: buffer overflow Then...after stop and release,.... I can see that a file has been created, but it doesn't seem that it been well recorderd. Anway, if i try this in a real device I can record with no problems, but I CAN'T play what I just recorded. I gues that the key is in these errors that I've mentioned before. How can I fix them? Any suggestion or help?? Thanks in advanced!!

• Changing size of content in HorizontalScrollView when phone is rotated by overriding onConfiguration

  Hello I have a problem with resizing content in a HorizontalScrollView when the phone is rotated. I'm overriding onConfigurationChanged in my activity containing the HorizontalScrollView, since I want to handle the resizing myself. However, I'm having great problem finding where i should put the resizing of the content. The HorizontalScrollView it self has FILL_PARENT as width and a fixed height. The idea is that it should always fill the screen width-wise, while having several cells of content, each as wide as the HorizontalScrollView itself. The content in my HorizontalScrollView consists of one LinearLayout (let's call it wrapperLayout) with several LinearLayouts inside it. When the phone rotates I simply want to change the width of all the LinearLayouts inside the wrapperLayout. This is easy to do and works great when I test the resizing code by putting it in onInterceptTouchEvent(MotionEvent ev), that is the views are resized just as they are supposed to when I touch the HorizontalScrollView. The difficulty appears when I try to find a good spot to execute resizing code, so that the resizing happens automatically when the phone is rotated. I have tried all possible combinations of requestLayout, onSizeChanged, onLayout, onConfigurationChanged and a few others and varying their calls to super (if any) before and after the resizing code. I can not make this work (the views are not resized even though the resize code is executed) and it is really frustrating. I've done a lot of logging to make sure the HorizonalScrollView really has changed width before calling my resize code but to no avail. Does anyone have any clue as to what is going on? What methods are called and in what order when I handle the onConfigurationChanged by myself like this? Thanks in advance

• Using nested error wrappers with jQuery validate plugin

  I am using the jQuery validate plugin. My error labels are styled like tooltips and take many levels of nested divs in order to create. The plugin has a wrapper option that allows for an element type to be specified as a wrapper for the error message, but it's only wrapped once. Is anyone familiar with how to do nested wrapping? This isn't my exact markup, but as an example: <div class="tooltip"> <div> <div> <span class="error">This field is required.</span> </div> </div> </div> * UPDATE * The response from Chris answers my original question, but creates a new problem. The errors are now being displayed as desired, but the plugin fails to clear them. When a failed validation passes, span.error is set to display:none, but the div.tooltip nested wrapper still displays.
