  Hello, I've been looking for a way to play and record audio on a Linux (preferably Ubuntu) system. I'm currently working on a front-end to a voice recognition toolkit that'll automate a few steps required to adapt a voice model for PocketSphinx and Julius. Suggestions of alternative means of audio input/output are welcome, as well as a fix to the bug shown below.   This post is to provide some useful information about the tools typically used by Oracle ETPM implementations for performance tuning and analysis.   This includes tools to monitor and gather performance information and statistics on the Database, Application Server, and Client (browser).  Enterprise Monitoring Tools Oracle Enterprise Manager - OEM Grid Control comes with a comprehensive set of performance and health metrics that allow monitoring of key components in your environment such as applications, application servers, databases, as well as the back-end components on which they rely, such as hosts, operating systems and storage. Tools for the Database Oracle Diagnostics Pack Automatic Workload Repository (AWR)  - this tool gets statistics from memory abut the Time Model or DB Time, Wait Events, Active Session History and High Load SWL queries Automatic Database Diagnostic Monitor (ADDM) - This self-diagnostic software is built into the database.  It examines and analyzes data captured in AWR to dertermine possible performance issues.  It locates the root cause of the issue, provides recommendations for correcting the issues and qualifies the expected benefit. Oracle Database Tuning Pack SQL Tuning Advisor - This enables you to submit one or more SQL statements as input and receive output in the form of specific advice or recommendations on how to tune statements.  The recommendation relates to collection of statistics on objects, creation on new indexes and restructuring of SQL statements. SQL Access Advisor - This enables you to optimize data access paths of SQL queries by recommending a proper set of materialized views, indexes and partitions for a given SQL workload. Tools for the Application Server Weblogic Console - is a web-based, user interface used to configure and control a set of WebLogic servers or clusters (i.e. a "domain").  In any logical group of WebLogic servers there must exist one admin server, which hosts the WebLogic Admin console application and manages the associated configuratoin files. WebLogic Administrators will use the Administration Console for a number of tasks, including: Starting and stopping WebLogic servers or entire clusters. Configuring server parameters, security, database connections and deployed applications. Viewing server status, health and metrics. Yourkit for Profiling - helps analyze synchronization issues, including: Which threads were calling wait(), and for how long Which threads were blocked on attempt to acquire a monitor held by another thread (synchronized methods/blocks), and for how long Tools for the Client Fiddler - allows you to inspect traffic logs, debug and set breakpoints. • Tips On Using The Service Contracts Import Program

  Prior to release 12.1 there was no supported way to import contracts into the EBS Service Contracts application - there were no public APIs nor contract load programs provided.  From release 12.1 onwards the 'Service Contracts Import Program' is provided to load service contracts into the application. The Service Contracts Import functionality is explained in How to Use the Service Contracts Import Program - Scope and Limitations (Doc ID 1057242.1).  This note includes an attached document which explains the program architecture, shows the Entity Relationship Diagram and details the interface table definitions. The Import program takes data from the interface tables listed below and populates the contracts schema tables:  OKS_USAGE_COUNTERS_INTERFACE OKS_SALES_CREDITS_INTERFACEOKS_NOTES_INTERFACEOKS_LINES_INTERFACEOKS_HEADERS_INTERFACEOKS_COVERED_LEVELS_INTERFACEThese interface tables must be loaded via a custom load program.The Service Contracts Import concurrent request is then submitted to create contracts from this legacy data. (Also there is not the possibility to enable these nice graphical features - the reason why I installed the proprietary driver) Because I worked with a completely fresh Installation I don't know how to fix the problem. • VSDB to SSDT Part 1 : Converting projects and trimming excess files

  Visual Studio 2012 introduces a change regarding Database Projects : they now use the SSDT technology, which means old VS2010 database projects (VSDB projects) need to be converted. Hopefully, VS2012 does that for you and it is quite painless, but in my case some unnecessary artifacts from the old project were left in place.  Also, when reopening the solution, database projects appeared unconverted even if I had converted them in the previous session and saved the solution.   Converting the project(s) When opening your Visual Studio 2010 solution with Visual Studio 2012, every standard project should be converted by default, but Visual Studio will ask you about your database projects : “Functional changes required Visual Studio will automatically make functional changes to the following projects in order to open them. The project behavior will change as a result. You will be able to open these projects in this version and Visual Studio 2010 SP1.” If you accept, your project is converted. And it should compile with no errors right away except if you have dependencies to dbschema files which are no longer supported.   The output of a SSDT project is a dacpac file which replaces the dbschema file you were accustomed to. References to dacpac files can be added to SSDT projects in the same fashion references to dbschema could be added to VSDB projects.   Cleaning up You will notice that your project file is now a sqlproj file but the old dbproj is still here. In fact at that point you can still reopen the solution in Visual Studio 2010 and everything should show up.   If like me you plan on using VS2012 exclusively, you can get rid of the following files which are still on your disk and in your source control : the dbproj and dbproj.vspscc files Properties/Database.sqlcmdvars Properties/Database.sqldeployment Properties/Database.sqlpermissions Properties/Database.sqlsettings   You might wonder where the information which used to be in the Properties files is now stored. Permissions : a Permissions.sql was created at the root level of your project. Note that when you create a new database project and import a database using the Schema Compare capabilities from Visual Studio, imported table and stored procedure definition files will hold the permission information (along with constraints and, indexes) SQLVars : they are defined inside the publish.xml files Deployment : they are also in the publish.xml files Settings : I was unable to find where those are now. I suppose they are not defined anymore   But Visual Studio still says my database projects should be converted ! • Lubuntu Desktop messed up for logged in user, but not for guest

  I recently upgraded my laptop from Lubuntu 12.04 to 14.04.1 and the upgrade process seemed to go fine. However, when I went to login as my normal user, I encountered an issue. The background loaded up, but none of LXDE or LXPanel showed up, leaving me with an empty desktop and nothing else except two errors. I thought that this was weird, so I just figured something had been messed up and would be fixed by a reboot. But it wasn't. I then tried logging in as guest, and it's just fine. I checked the ~/.xsession-errors file (for my main user, not guest, did it via TTY1) and this is what I got: Script for ibus started at run_im. Script for auto started at run_im. Script for default started at run_im. init: Unable to register as subreaper: Invalid argument init: lxsession main process (1649) killed by TERM signal init: Disconnected from notified D-Bus bus init: job dbus failed to stop init: job upstart-dbus-session-bridge failed to stop init: job upstart-dbus-system-bridge failed to stop init: job upstart-file-bridge failed to stop I also read the sometimes removing the ~/.Xauthority file can help, if the ownership is messed up. ls -l /home/MYUSER/.Xauthority tells me -rw------- 1 MYUSER MYUSER 60 Aug 16 09:57 /home/MYUSER/.Xauthority. Should that be root or something else, or should I try deleting that and ~/.profile. • Voxel Engine in Multiplayer?

  This is a question more out of Interest for now, because I am not even near to the point that I could create this project at the moment. I really like the progress on the Atomontage Engine. A Voxel engine that is WIP at the moment. I would like to create a Voxel SERVER eventually. First in JavaScript (That's what I am learning right now) later perhaps in C++ for speed. Remember, I am perfectly aware that this is very hard! This is a brainstorm for the next 10 years as for now. What I would like to achieve one day is a Multiplayer Game in the Browser where the voxels positions are updated by XYZ input from the server. The Browser Does only 3 things: sending player input to the server, updating Voxel positions send from the server and rendering the world. I imagine using something like the Three.js libary on the client side. So that would be my programming dream right there... Now to something simpler for the near future. Right now I am learning javascript. And I am making games with Construct2. (A really cool JavaScript "game maker") The plan is to create a 2D Voxel enviorment (Block Voxels) on the Socket.IO Server* and send the position of the Voxels and Players to the Client side which then positions the Voxel Blocks to the Server Output coordinates. I think that is a bit more manageable then the other bigger idea. And also there should be no worries about speed with this type of project in JavaScript (I hope). Extra Info: *I am using nodejs (Without really knowing what it does besides making Socket.IO work) So now some questions: Is the "dream project" doable in JavaScript? Or is C++ just the best option because it does not take as long to be interpreted at run time like JavaScript? What are the limitations? I can think of some: Need of a Powerful server depending on how much information the server has to process. Internet Speed; Sending the data of the Voxel positions to every player could add up being very high! The browser FPS might go down quickly if rendering to many objects. One way of fixing reducing the packages Could be to let the browser calculate some of the Voxel positions from Several Values. But that would slow down the Client side too. What about the more achievable project? I am almost 100% convinced that this is possible in JavaScript, and that there are several ways of doing this. This is just XY position Updating for now.. • Log Debug Messages without Debug Serial on Shipped Device

  Debug message is one of the ancient but useful way for problem resolving. Message is redirected to PB if KITL is enabled otherwise it goes to default debug port, usually a serial port on most of the platform but it really depends on how OEMWriteDebugString and OEMWriteDebugByte are implemented. For many reasons, we don't want to have a debug serial port, for example, we don't have enough spare serial ports and it can affect the performance. So some of the BSP designers decide to dump the messages into other media, could be a log file, shared memory or any solution that is suitable for the need. In CE 5.0 and previous, OAL and Kernel are linked into one binaries; in the other word, you can use whatever function in kernel, such as SC_CreateFileW to access filesystem in OAL, even this is strongly not recommended. But since the OAL is being a standalone executable in CE 6.0, we no longer can use this back door but only interface exported in NKGlobal which just provides enough for OAL but no more. Accessing filesystem or using sync object to communicate to other drivers or application is even not an option. Sounds like the kernel lock itself up; of course, OAL is in kernel space, you can still do whatever you want to hack into kernel, but once again, it is not only make it a dirty solution but also fragile. So isn't there an elegant solution? Let's see how a debug message print out. In private\winceos\COREOS\nk\kernel\printf.c, the OutputDebugStringW is the one for pumping out the messages; most of the code is for error handling and serialization but what really interesting is the following code piece     if (g_cInterruptsOff) {         OEMWriteDebugString ((unsigned short *)str);     } else {         g_pNKGlobal->pfnWriteDebugString ((unsigned short *)str);     }     CELOG_OutputDebugString(dwActvProcId, dwCurThId, str); It outputs the message to default debug output (is redirected to KITL when available) or OAL when needed but note that highlight part, it also invokes CELOG_OutputDebugString. Follow the thread to private\winceos\COREOS\nk\logger\CeLogInstrumentation.c, this function dump whatever input to CELOG. So whatever the debug message is we always got a clone in CELOG. General speaking, all of the debug message is logged to CELOG already, so what you need to do is using celogflush.exe with CELZONE_DEBUG zone, and then viewing the data using the by Readlog tool. • apt-get install is not able to access /etc

  I put together an ubuntu 12.04 server a couple of weeks ago and everything seemed fine until this morning. Suddenly, I'm having trouble installing new packages - at first I thought there was something wrong with tinyproxy and so I tried installing squid instead. However, I get similar results: Starting tinyproxy: tinyproxy: Could not open config file "/etc/tinyproxy.conf".\ ... /var/lib/dpkg/info/squid3.postinst: 1: /var/lib/dpkg/info/squid3.postinst: cannot open /etc/squid3/squid.conf: No such file It seems that apt-get is not creating the configuration files needed for these programs. I haven't modified any configuration or user groups since the last successful update/install of packages. /etc is present, and is populated with a nice healthy tree of configuration files. It is owned and grouped to root, and has the properties drwxr-xr-x - all the files and folders inside seem to be fine to, as far as I can tell. I've even been able to edit/save a couple as sudo. • xsltproc killed, out of memory

  I'm trying to split up a 13GB xml file into small ~50MB xml files with this XSLT style sheet. But this process kills xsltproc after I see it taking up over 1.7GB of memory (that's the total on the system). Is there any way to deal with huge XML files with xsltproc? Can I change my style sheet? Or should I use a different processor? • Altering a Column Which has a Default Constraint

  Setting up a default column is a common task for  developers.  But, are we naming those default constraints explicitly? In the below  table creation, for the column, sys_DateTime the default value Getdate() will be allocated. CREATE TABLE SampleTable (ID int identity(1,1), Sys_DateTime Datetime DEFAULT getdate() ) We can check the relevant information from the system catalogs from following query. SELECT sc.name TableName, dc.name DefaultName, dc.definition, OBJECT_NAME(dc.parent_object_id) TableName, dc.is_system_named  FROM sys.default_constraints dc INNER JOIN sys.columns sc ON dc.parent_object_id = sc.object_id AND dc.parent_column_id = sc.column_id and results would be: Most of the above columns are self-explanatory. The last column, is_system_named, is to identify whether the default name was given by the system. As you know, in the above case, since we didn’t provide  any default name, the  system will generate a default name for you. But the problem with these names is that they can differ from environment to environment.  If example if I create this table in different table the default name could be DF__SampleTab__Sys_D__7E6CC920 Now let us create another default and explicitly name it: CREATE TABLE SampleTable2 (ID int identity(1,1), Sys_DateTime Datetime )   ALTER TABLE SampleTable2 ADD CONSTRAINT DF_sys_DateTime_Getdate DEFAULT( Getdate()) FOR Sys_DateTime If we run the previous query again we will be returned the below output. And you can see that last created default name has 0 for is_system_named. Now let us say I want to change the data type of the sys_DateTime column to something else: ALTER TABLE SampleTable2 ALTER COLUMN Sys_DateTime Date This will generate the below error: Msg 5074, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 The object ‘DF_sys_DateTime_Getdate’ is dependent on column ‘Sys_DateTime’. Msg 4922, Level 16, State 9, Line 1 ALTER TABLE ALTER COLUMN Sys_DateTime failed because one or more objects access this column. • SSAS: Utility to check you have the correct data types and sizes in your cube definition

  This blog describes a tool I developed which allows you to compare the data types and data sizes found in the cube’s data source view with the data types/sizes of the corresponding dimensional attribute.  Why is this important?  Well when creating named queries in a cube’s data source view, it is often necessary to use the SQL CAST or CONVERT operation to change the data type to something more appropriate for SSAS.  This is particularly important when your cube is based on an Oracle data source or using custom SQL queries rather than views in the relational database.   The problem with BIDS is that if you change the underlying SQL query, then the size of the data type in the dimension does not update automatically.  This then causes problems during deployment whereby processing the dimension fails because the data in the relational database is wider than that allowed by the dimensional attribute. In particular, if you use some string manipulation functions provided by SQL Server or Oracle in your queries, you may find that the 10 character string you expect suddenly turns into an 8,000 character monster.  For example, the SQL Server function REPLACE returns column with a width of 8,000 characters.  So if you use this function in the named query in your DSV, you will get a column width of 8,000 characters.  Although the Oracle REPLACE function is far more intelligent, the generated column size could still be way bigger than the maximum length of the data actually in the field. Now this may not be a problem when prototyping, but in your production cubes you really should clean up this kind of thing as these massive strings will add to processing times and storage space. Similarly, you do not want to forget to change the size of the dimension attribute if your database columns increase in size. Introducing CheckCubeDataTypes Utiltity The CheckCubeDataTypes application extracts all the data types and data sizes for all attributes in the cube and compares them to the data types and data sizes in the cube’s data source view.  It then generates an Excel CSV file which contains all this metadata along with a flag indicating if there is a mismatch between the DSV and the dimensional attribute.  Note that the app not only checks all the attribute keys but also the name and value columns for each attribute. Another benefit of having the metadata held in a CSV text file format is that you can place the file under source code control.  This allows you to compare the metadata of the previous cube release with your new release to highlight problems introduced by new development. • BizTalk 2009 - Creating a Custom Functoid Library

  If you find that you have a need to created multiple Custom Functoids you may also choose to create a Custom Functoid Library - a single project containing many custom functoids.  As previsouly discussed, the Custom Functoid Wizard can be used to create a project with a new custom functoid inside.  But what if you want to extend this project to include more custom functoids and create your Custom Functoid Library?  First create a Custom Functoid Library project and your first Custom Functoid using the Custom Functoid Wizard. When you open your Custom Functoid Library project in Visual Studio you will see that it contains your custom functoid class file along with its resource file.  One of the items this resource file contains is the ID of the the custom functoid.  Each custom functoid needs a unique ID that is over 6000.  When creating a Custom Functoid Library I would first suggest that you delete the ID from this resource file and instead create a _FunctoidIDs class containing constants for each of your custom functoids.  In this way you can easily see which custom functoid IDs are assigned to which custom functoid and which ID is next in the sequence of availability: namespace MyCompany.BizTalk.Functoids.TestFunctoids {     class _FunctoidIDs     {         public const int TestFunctoid                       = 6001;     } } You will then need to update the base() function in your existing functoid class to reference these constant values rather than the current resource file. From:    int functoidID;    // This has to be a number greater than 6000    functoidID = System.Convert.ToInt32(resmgr.GetString("FunctoidId"));    this.ID = functoidID; To: this.ID = _FunctoidIDs.TestFunctoid; To create a new custom functoid you can copy the existing custom functoid, renaming the resultant class file as appropriate.  Once it is renamed you will need to change the Class name, ResourceName reference and Base function name in the class code to those of your new custom functoid.  You will also need to create a new constant value in the _FunctoidIDs class and update the ID reference in your code to match this.  Assuming that you need some different functionalty from your new  customfunctoid you will need to check or amend the following in your functoid class file: Min and Max connections Functoid Category Input and Output connection types The parameters and functionality of the Execute function To change the appearance of you new custom functoid you will need to check or amend the following in the functoid resource file: Name Description Tooltip Exception Icon You can change the String values by double clicking the resource file and amending the value fields in the string table. To amend the functoid icon you will need to create a 16x16 bitmap image.  Once you have saved this you are then ready to import it into the functoid resource file.  In Visual Studio change the resource view to images, right click the icon and choose import from file. You have now completed your new custom functoid and created a Custom Functoid Library.  You can test your new library of functoids by building the project, copying the resultant DLL to C:\Program Files\Microsoft BizTalk Server 2009\Developer Tools\Mapper Extensions and then resetting the toolbox in Visual Studio.

• ZTE USB Modem AC2736, connection not possible in Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS

  It's a long post but nearly covers all my experiments and changes I did to my NM. Hope the information is complete and if there are still question, more information can be provided. I've a ZTE AC2736 USB Modem (CDMA modem) which worked fine in Ubuntu 10.04 /11.10. I recently switched to 12.04.1 (precise pangolin). after the switch the first issue I faced was to connect to internet using my USB modem (ISP: Reliance Brand: Netconnect). Tried to run the drivers provided by Reliance but they are old and won't support Kernel 2.6.30 above. since the code was not downloaded with ISO image (of 12.04) i couldn't compile the files provided in such driver. lsusb does detect it as Modem with output similar to 19d2:fff1 ZTE CDMA technologies inc. (or similar as i didn't note it down) If it is detected as USB storage it shows 19d2:fff5 (as per few online forums, i may be wrong here). I used the network Manager and configured the modem to dial #777 (default) and the ISP provided username:password combination. It tries to connect to internet (3-4 times automatically)but fails to get online. once I was able to connect in the monring hours and the message was flashed 'registered on CDMA home network'. I was able to run an update. the kernel was updated with 3.0.2 -pae OR something similar (can find out if required). I surfed the net for about 2 hours later before restarting. After the restart, again the Modem was not able to get me online. I kept trying for many times. I tried changing the setting in NM. One evening after dark I was able to connect to network with same message flash 'registered on CDMA home network' (the message was similar, i'm not precise here,sorry). I was able to surf the net for nearly 3 hours before I switched off my Laptop. I'm not able to get online after that day, It's been 3 days now. I'll try the observered theory of late/early hours sometime soon as mentioned below. Laptop configuration : Make: Lenovo Model: B480 Processor: Intel B950 RAM: 4G DDR3 HDD: 500 G Broadcom Wireless/Bluetooth/Ethernet LAN OS: FreeDOS / Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (dualboot) Kernel 3.0.2-pae Obeservation : I'm able to connect to internet in those hours when generally the speed is high (low usage by other network (wireless) users). like in early mornings or late nights. This is strange as connection should not be dependent on bandwidth usage. Any help would be appraciated to fix this issue. before I decide to cahnge the OS or ISP.

• Multiple render targets and gamma correctness in Direct3D9

  Let's say in a deferred renderer when building your G-Buffer you're going to render texture color, normals, depth and whatever else to your multiple render targets at once. Now if you want to have a gamma-correct rendering pipeline and you use regular sRGB textures as well as rendertargets, you'll need to apply some conversions along the way, because your filtering, sampling and calculations should happen in linear space, not sRGB space. Of course, you could store linear color in your textures and rendertargets, but this might very well introduce bad precision and banding issues. Reading from sRGB textures is easy: just set SRGBTexture = true; in your texture sampler in your HLSL effect code and the hardware does the conversion sRGB-linear for you. Writing to an sRGB rendertarget is theoretically easy, too: just set SRGBWriteEnable = true; in your effect pass in HLSL and your linear colors will be converted to sRGB space automatically. But how does this work with multiple rendertargets? I only want to do these corrections to the color textures and rendertarget, not to the normals, depth, specularity or whatever else I'll be rendering to my G-Buffer. Ok, so I just don't apply SRGBTexture = true; to my non-color textures, but when using SRGBWriteEnable = true; I'll do a gamma correction to all the values I write out to my rendertargets, no matter what I actually store there. I found some info on gamma over at Microsoft: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/bb173460%28v=vs.85%29.aspx For hardware that supports Multiple Render Targets (Direct3D 9) or Multiple-element Textures (Direct3D 9), only the first render target or element is written. If I understand correctly, SRGBWriteEnable should only be applied to the first rendertarget, but according to my tests it doesn't and is used for all rendertargets instead. Now the only alternative seems to be to handle these corrections manually in my shader and only correct the actual color output, but I'm not totally sure, that this'll not have any negative impact on color correctness. E.g. if the GPU does any blending or filtering or multisampling after the Linear-sRGB conversion... Do I even need gamma correction in this case, if I'm just writing texture color without lighting to my rendertarget? As far as I know, I DO need it because of the texture filtering and mip sampling happening in sRGB space instead, if I don't correct for it. Anyway, it'd be interesting to hear other people's solutions or thoughts about this.

• Macbook (non-pro, late 2010) Power Management Issues relating to Nvidia-Current drivers

  I have tried many potential solutions but to no avail! (this is going to be a long post) Essentially, when I first install ubuntu (I have tested 10.11-12.04 beta) I can change the brightness of the macbook backlight. One of the first things I usually do once my machine finishes installing is enter "sudo apt-get install nvidia-current" into the terminal to get my Nvidia graphics card set up. Before I install nvidia-current power management works flawlessly. After installing nvidia-current my graphics driver works mostly properly (more on that later). When I press F1 or F2 notify osd pops up and shows icon for the backlight along with a meter which changes according to how much I press F1 or F2, but the backlight does not change brightness at all. Two supplementary facts: when I am running off of battery power the backlight does not dim ever, also changing the backlight brightness through the terminal does not work (it recognizes the command but changes nothing). • Remote synchronization

  Hi all, today we would like to show you another improvement we have prepared for NetBeans 7.2. Today, let's talk a little bit about remote synchronization. If you already use our simple (S)FTP client, this enhancement could be useful for you. Simply right click on Source Files and select Synchronize. Please notice that the remote synchronization works better only on the whole project (it means that the Source Files must be selected). The Synchronize action is also available on individual files (more files can be selected at once) but the suggested operation (download, upload etc.) does not work so precisely. Also please notice that the suggested operations are not 100% reliable since the timestamps provided by FTP servers are not exact. Once the remote files (their names and paths only, of course) are fetched, the main dialog appears: As you can see, NetBeans tries to suggest you operations (upload, download etc.) which should be done for each individual file of your project. If you are interested only in some particular changes, you can simply filter the list: Since we have a file conflict, we need to resolve it first. Fortunately this is very easy because we just select the desired file and click the Diff button . The remote version of our file is downloaded and compared with the local version. The resut is displayed in the dialog where you can easily apply and/or refuse the remote changes or even simply type manually to the local version of the selected file: Once we are done with our changes, the operation for the selected file changes to Upload and the file is marked with * (since we made some changes). Please notice that if you now click the Cancel button, in fact no changes are done in our local file. As you can see, if we have one or more files selected, we can change their operation to: no operation (file won't be synchronized) download upload delete (both local and remote file) reset (the operation is resetted to the original one suggested by NetBeans and also all changes done via Diff action are discarded) Now we are ready to synchronize our project. NetBeans will show us the synchronization summary (this dialog can be omitted, see the Show Summary checkbox on the previous image). The synchronization itself starts and we can see its progress and of course its result. As always, all the operations can be reviewed in the Output window. That's all for today, as always, please test it and report all the issues or enhancements you find in NetBeans BugZilla (component php, subcomponent FTP support).
