• How to attract modders to your game?

  I am developing a game, but as I am working on it alone, the amount of content I can create is very limited. Because of that I want my game to be modded, for this purpose I am planning to create a complete modding API which would be exposed for lua scripting. I would also create tutorials to get people started. And the "Original" game would also be a "mod"(similar to Warcraft III maps) . My question is: What can a developer do to encourage modding of its game? PS: my game is a sandbox-ish multiplayer survival(most things are procedural).

• How can I improve the workflow between developer and designer with Expression Blend?

  We use WPF and Expression Blend 4. I'm trying to improve our workflow by tutoring one of our designers to use it for styling and animation. Slowly but surely I get the impression Blend in itself is to technical for the designer in question. I myself use it only occasionally (it's great for Visual States for instance) because a lot of things are easier done in code or not possible at all in Blend alone. It seems a developer with design experience is a lot more productive with it than a sole designer. Are there any good resources or advice as to how I can improve this workflow?

• Logic in Entity Components Sytems

  I'm making a game that uses an Entity/Component architecture basically a port of Artemis's framework to c++,the problem arises when I try to make a PlayerControllerComponent, my original idea was this. class PlayerControllerComponent: Component { public: virtual void update() = 0; }; class FpsPlayerControllerComponent: PlayerControllerComponent { public: void update() { //handle input } }; and have a system that updates PlayerControllerComponents, but I found out that the artemis framework does not look at sub-classes the way I thought it would. So all in all my question here is should I make the framework aware of subclasses or should I add a new Component like object that is used for logic.

• Do you use i-->0 for backward loops?

  Some people write for (int i=N; i-->0; ) doSomething(i); instead of for (int i=N-1; i>=0; --i) doSomething(i); for backward loops. The --> "operator"1 looks very confusing at the first glance, but it's trivial: i-->0 simply parses as (i--)>0, and once you get it, you see it immediately. The main disadvantage is the strange look. The advantage is that you'll get it always right (unlike the more verbose version offering the possibility to forget something, which really happened to me a couple of times). What do you think about using the --> "operator"? 1First time I saw the funny term in a comment to this question today.

• Is there a certain way that I have to include a library and it's license?

  I know this may be a dumb question, but I'm only 15 so I don't really know how the legal part of it works. When I choose a .dll to be included in my project, Visual Studio only includes the .dll file with my project (of course) so I just copy the license and stick it in a folder called licenses. But now, I'm going to be making a program for a contest so I need to make sure I have the licenses done right or I'll get disqualified. So is there any specific location I have to keep the licenses in my project, is there a way for Visual Studio to automatically copy the license the way it does with .dll files and is there anything else I have to watch out for legally? PS: If it matters the libraries I'm planning on using right now are WriteableBitmapEx and AvalonDock Thanks

• Using two ethernet connections (Internet enabled) simultaneously

  I have searched and read over the Internet and also on askubuntu. i am using Ubuntu 11.04 and my question or the thing that I want to achieve is efficient use of both the connections and thus increasing my browsing and downloading speed. I want my system to decide which packet should be routed over which interface. I want to know if this is possible. For example, Is it possible to route alternate packets over the two interfaces ? Please let me know any Internet resource or If I would have to insert any code into the network drivers etc. ?

• How does N create it's tileset?

  I am trying to recreate a Multiplayer version of the popular flash game N in java. I have a single question however. Are the tiles for the games draw or are they defined with mathamatical formulars/In code? Since I do see how they would scale up in flash if they were not.   I was wondering if there is anyway you can block or exclude people from submitting multiple fake ip's online . For example I have a google pay-per-click campaign set up on adwords. I downloaded a program in minutes which enabled me to hide or give out a fake ip address which also allows you to use a different ip each time. I tried this out on my own link on google which in turn got through adwords and I was charged for the click. My question is how would you be able to counter or block someone who continuosly clicks on your link with a different fake ip each time?

• Get a new instance with StructureMap

  It took me too long to figure this out, so hopefully it will help you. StructureMap has way that will create a new instance of the object every time, instead of storing this in the container. I’m going to use this for the DBContext and for WCF Service references. Since the ObjectFactory is a static class, MVC will have these stored in memory without this.   I am just messing around, trying to figure out how stuff works and right now I have a couple questions about HTML, JS and CSS engines. I know there are two major JavaScript engines out there - V8 and JavaScriptCore (WebKit's JS engine as far as I know). Is that correct? And what are the main HTML + CSS renderers out there? Let's say I want to build a web browser using V8 (I saw it has some documentation and stuff + I like the way it works), what are the best options for me? Partially another question. Is there any bare browser that uses V8 and runs on Ubuntu at least? P.S. I am a Ubuntu user and prefer C++.

• Why can't my jsp page read chinese chars from mysql? [migrated]

  The mysql chars is utf-8, and the jsp page is also set to utf-8. I use the method: DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/jsptest?"+"useUnicode=true&characterEncoding=UTF-8","root",""); But it can not be use. When I insert Chinese chars into mysql and select it out, that would be proper functioning. The question is when I select some Chinese chars that I write into mysql at first, it would be all the "?" at the Chinese char place! Please watch the picture:

• Adobe Air apps on the Mac App Store?

  Before you chastise me for asking this, I have an Adobe Air app that has a lot of investment in it, and if there is a way to utilize the existing code-base in any way, it is worth considering. I have heard news reports in passing about Adobe creating some kind of tool to allow flash or air apps to be ported to native objective-c code, but the information found in google is mostly commentary on the one-time Apple blockade. My question(s) is/are this: Is it even possible, at any level, to use an existing Air app to create a Mac Store app? If possible, what are the resources I can use to accomplish this?

• Bridging the gap between learning language fundamentals and actually making useful software?

  I'm learning C# via the "Essential C#" Lynda.com video tutorials and plan to read a couple of books that cover things in more depth afterwards. My question is where I should head to learn more after that? I've done things like project Euler in the past, but I find they don't really help me learn anything other than basic program control flow and features. I've looked at many open-source projects but pretty much everything still looks overwhelmingly complicated at this stage. What would you recommend I look at to help me build useful applications that are a bit beyond the millions of console applications I must've written thus-far? Should I be looking at books specifically on learning/working with the .NET framework, or just biting my lip and continue working through open source projects until they start to make sense?

  Hi, an upstart question (I think I have read all relevant man pages but could not find the answer there): What is the sense of using a "stop on ..." stanza in the definition of a job which is a task? The manuals tell us that such a job, after being started, just waits until its script (or exec stanza) is executed completely, and then stops automatically. Given that, what is the point in using "stop on ..." stanzas in such job definitions? For example, this is the job definition for Upstart's (very important) rc job in Natty 11.04 (leaving out comments and empty lines): start on runlevel [0123456] stop on runlevel [!$RUNLEVEL] export RUNLEVEL export PREVLEVEL console output env INIT_VERBOSE task exec /etc/init.d/rc $RUNLEVEL IMHO, the job, after being started by a runlevel event, will be stopped automatically as soon as /etc/init.d/rc $RUNLEVEL has finished. • How to add SMS text messaging functionality to my website?

  I want to add the ability to send reminders to people via email and SMS for specific events that they have signed up for on a web application that I am building. The email part is not difficult, but I am wondering where to find a good solution for sending SMS messages. It would also be a plus if this solution allowed two-way SMS communication with my web application so that people would be able to reply with a CONFIRM or CANCEL type of a message. Has anyone implemented something like this? Does anyone know of good tools out there? EDIT: I am realizing that this is more of a "lots of ways to skin this cat" type of question and so I changed it to community wiki.

• Build automation: Is it usual to use QMake for non-Qt projects?

  So, I'm planning to write a C++ library and I want it to be cross-platform, and as this library won't deal with UI and I want it to have as little dependencies as possible, I won't be using Qt (actually Qt won't really help me to achieve what I want, all I plan on using is STL and Boost). Now when it comes to build a cross-platform project, I really like QMake as it's extremely easy to use and I have experience with it. I also heard good things about CMake, though I really doubt it's as easy to use as QMake. Anyway, here is my question: Should I stick with build automation tool that I know or is QMake just out of context for a non-Qt project? Should I take this as an opportunity to learn CMake? Or is there a better alternative to these two?

• How should UI layer pass user input to BL layer?

  I'm building an n-tier application, I have UI, BL, DAL & Entities (built from POCO) projects. (All projects have a reference to the Entities). My question is - how should I pass user input from the UI to the BL, as a bunch of strings passed to the BL method and the BL will build the object from the parameters, or should I build the objects inside the UI submit_function and send objects as parameters? EDIT: I wrote n-tier application, but what I actually meant was just layers.

• Is using build-in sorting considered cheating in practice tests?

  I am using one of the practice online judges where a practice problem is asked and one submits the answer and gets back if it is accepted or not based on test inputs. My question is the following: In one of the practice tests, I needed to sort an array as part of the solution algorithm. If it matters the problem was: find 2 numbers in an array that add up to a specific target. As part of my algorithm I sorted the array, but to do that I used Java's quicksort and not implement sorting as part of the same method. To do that I had to do: java.util.Arrays.sort(array); Since I had to use the fully qualified name I am wondering if this is a kind of "cheating". (I mean perhaps an online judge does not expect this) Is it? In a formal interview (since these tests are practice for interview as I understand) would this be acceptable?

• Combining a content management system with ASP.NET

  I am going to be creating a site that seems like it requires a blend of a content management system (CMS) and some custom web development (which is done in ASP.NET MVC). I have plenty of web development experience to understand the ASP.NET MVC side of the fence, but, I don't have a lot of CMS knowledge aside from getting one stood up. Right now my biggest question is around integrating security from ASP.NET with the CMS. I currently have an ASP.NET MVC site that handles the authentication for multiple production sites and creates an authentication cookie under our domain (*.example.com). The page acts like a single sign on page since the cookie is a wildcard and can be used in any other applications of the same domain. I'd really like to avoid having users put in their credentials twice. Is there a CMS that will play well with the ASP.NET Forms Authentication given how I have these existing applications structured? As an aside, right now I am leaning towards Drupal, but, that isn't finalized.

  We are planning to set up a complete ERP and CRM system for a medium-sized global company, that might turn into a essential tool for all locations once deployed. For now these locations include USA, Germany, China and Indonesia, but the list is growing quickly. My question is, where it is best to physically locate the server to ensure the access times are optimal from all (future) locations? On my mind, I am dealing with multiple connected servers (a cloud?), where each of our users is served by the physically closest server. • Finding .desktop files based on their titles?

  That's part 2 of a question asked earlier (to be able to give credit to the answers individually). When I type into the Dash applications show up with their title (also when hovering over the launcher), how can I find the associated desktop file. When I look into the usual suspect locations (/usr/share/applications and ~/.local/share/applications) with Nautilus I see the titles, but not the file names (not even in properties which sucks). When I look from the command line I see the file names but not the titles (a switch would be nice). How can I get a listing (a custom column?) that shows them next to each other?
