• How do I store complex objects in javascript?

  Hello, I need to be able to store objects in javascript, and access them very quickly. For example, I have a list of vehicles, defined like so: { "name": "Jim's Ford Focus", "color": "white", isDamaged: true, wheels: 4 } { "name": "Bob's Suzuki Swift", "color": "green", isDamaged: false, wheels: 4 } { "name": "Alex's Harley Davidson", "color": "black", isDamaged: false, wheels: 2 } There will potentially be hundreds of these vehicle entries, which might be accessed thousands of times. I need to be able to access them as fast as possible, ideally in some useful way. For example, I could store the objects in an array. Then I could simply say vehicles[0] to get the Ford Focus entry, vehicles[1] to get the Suzuki Swift entry, etc. However, how do I know which entry is the Ford Focus? I want to simply ask "find me Jim's Ford Focus" and have the object returned to me, as fast as possible. For example, in another language, I might use a hash table, indexed by name. How can I do this in javascript? Or, is there a better way? Thanks.

• PHP Streaming CSV always adds UTF-8 BOM

  The following code gets a 'report line' as an array and uses fputcsv to tranform it into CSV. Everything is working great except for the fact that regardless of the charset I use, it is putting a UTF-8 bom at the beginning of the file. This is exceptionally annoying because A) I am specifying iso and B) We have lots of users using tools that show the UTF-8 bom as characters of garbage. I have even tried writing the results to a string, stripping the UTF-8 BOM and then echo'ing it out and still get it. Is it possible that the issue resides with Apache? • custom wordpress page

  I'd like to implement a custom post retrieval page in wordpress. Basically, I'm using AJAX to call this page that will be passed a post ID and retrieve certain data from that post. Note: please don't mistake this as a template question. I do not want a template for one single page -- I am looking to make this page query multiple different posts based on postID and return certain data from that post. • Populating cell in UITableView with unique items

  I have an array of URL Links that I'm trying to load into a Grouped UITableView. The goal being that I have numberOfSectionsInTableView return [url count] so I can have number of sections equal to the number of url links. Then in numberOfRowsInSection returns 1 so I only populate 1 URL for each section. The trouble I'm having is to ensure that cellForRowAtIndexPath won't keep grabbing the first url link. I suspect it's because it's always grabbing the first url because the rowIndex is always zero. • My Zend Framework 'quoting' mess.

  I've got a probably very simple issue to which I can't find a satisfactory (subjectively seen) answer in the Zend Framework manual or elsewhere... There are so many ways how I can hand over my php variables to my sql queries that I lost the overview and probably I lack some understanding about quoting in general. Prepared Statements $sql = "SELECT this, that FROM table WHERE id = ? AND restriction = ?"; $stmt = $this->_db->query($sql, array($myId, $myValue)); $result = $stmt->fetchAll(); I understand that with this solution I don't need to quote anything because the db handles this for me. Querying Zend_Db_Table and _Row objects over the API $users = new Users(); a) $users->fetchRow('userID = ' . $userID); b) $users->fetchRow('userID = ' . $users->getAdapter()->quote($userID, 'INTEGER')); c) $users->fetchRow('userID = ?', $userID); d) $users->fetchRow('userID = ?', $users->getAdapter()->quote($userID, 'INTEGER')); Questions I understand that a) is not ok because it's not quoted at all. But what about the other versions, what's the best? Is c) being treated like a statement and automatically quoted or do I need to use d) when I use the ? identifier?

• UIView Controller mysteriously getting deallocated

  I have a UINavigation scheme with a "welcome" page, a middle page, and a detail page. In the middle page, there's a segmented controller that can swap the main body of that page between a table, a calendar, and a MKMapView, each implemented with their own view controller classes. Today I implemented the MapView and its annotations and all of that. It's nice. And a detail disclosure on each callout takes you to the detail page just the same way as if you'd gotten there via the table. Lovely. I also have a right-button-bar button that pushes in a "search" view. From there you can search the data I'm navigating. When it's done filtering the data (an array of objects I'm keeping in a data singleton), it makes the table reload its data, and calls my annotation-clearer-and-builder methods on the map view, and then pops itself out, so the "middle" page (including whatever view was in the guts of it) is back on the screen. Problem is, if I go back and forth between the map and the search a couple times, any mention of the table view causes us to crash with: *** -[CALayer retain]: message sent to deallocated instance 0x710b810. (I obviously have NSZombies turned on.) I put an NSLog in the dealloc method of my table view controller. That thing's never getting called. I don't know if we're ditching it behind the scenes for memory purposes, or if I'm leaking it and can't get my hands back on it, or what. I'm sort of at a loss about where to look. Any hints?

From index I am reading terms with different measures of their frequencies. • How can I read a DBF file with incorrectly defined column data types using ADO.NET?

  I have a several DBF files generated by a third party that I need to be able to query. I am having trouble because all of the column types have been defined as characters, but the data within some of these fields actually contain binary data. If I try to read these fields using an OleDbDataReader as anything other than a string or character array, I get an InvalidCastException thrown, but I need to be able to read them as a binary value or at least cast/convert them after they are read. The columns that actually DO contain text are being returned as expected. For example, the very first column is defined as a character field with a length of 2 bytes, but the field contains a 16-bit integer. I have written the following test code to read the first column and convert it to the appropriate data type, but the value is not coming out right. The first row of the database has a value of 17365 (0x43D5) in the first column. Running the following code, what I end up getting is 17215 (0x433F). I'm pretty sure it has to do with using the ASCII encoding to get the bytes from the string returned by the data reader, but I'm not sure of another way to get the value into the format that I need, other that to write my own DBF reader and bypass ADO.NET altogether which I don't want to do unless I absolutely have to. • Why is an Add method required for { } initialization?

  To use initialization syntax like this: var contacts = new ContactList { { "Dan", "[email protected]" }, { "Eric", "[email protected]" } }; ...my understanding is that my ContactList type would need to define an Add method that takes two string parameters: public void Add(string name, string email); What's a bit confusing to me about this is that the { } initializer syntax seems most useful when creating read-only or fixed-size collections. After all it is meant to mimic the initialization syntax for an array, right? (OK, so arrays are not read-only; but they are fixed size.) And naturally it can only be used when the collection's contents are known (at least the number of elements) at compile-time. So it would almost seem that the main requirement for using this collection initializer syntax (having an Add method and therefore a mutable collection) is at odds with the typical case in which it would be most useful. I'm sure I haven't put as much thought into this matter as the C# design team; it just seems that there could have been different rules for this syntax that would have meshed better with its typical usage scenarios. Am I way off base here? Is the desire to use the { } syntax to initialize fixed-size collections not as common as I think? What other factors might have influenced the formulation of the requirements for this syntax that I'm simply not thinking of?

• PHP get "Application Root" in Xampp on Windows correctly

  Hi all: I found this thread on StackOverflow about how to get the "Application Root" from inside my web app. However, most of the approaches suggested in that thread can hardly be applied to my Xampp on Windows. Say, I've got a "common.php" which stays inside my web app's app directory: / /app/common.php /protected/index.php In my common.php, what I've got is like this: define('DOCROOT', $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT']); define('ABSPATH', dirname(__FILE__)); define('COMMONSCRIPT', $_SERVER['PHP_SELF']); After I required the common.php inside the /protected/index.php, I found this: C:/xampp/htdocs //<== echo DOCROOT; C:\xampp\htdocs\comic\app //<== echo ABSPATH /comic/protected/index.php //<== echo COMMONSCRIPT So the most troublesome part is the path delimiters are not universal, plus, it seems all superglobals from the $_SERVER[] asso array, such as $_SERVER['PHP_SELF'], are relative to the "caller" script, not the "callee" script. It seems that I can only rely on dirname(__FILE__) to make sure this always returns an absolute path to the common.php file. I can certainly parse the returning values from DOCROOT and ABSPATH and then calculate the correct "application root". For instance, I can compare the parts after htdocs and substitute all backslashes with slashes to get a unix-like path I wonder is this the right way to handle this? What if I deploy my web app on a LAMP environment? would this environment-dependent approach bomb me out? I have used some PHP frameworks such as CakePHP and CodeIgniter, to be frank, They just work on either LAMP or WAMP, but I am not sure how they approached such a elegant solution. I still want the combobox to have a two-way bind between its selected item and a property on the collection of objects... I have the following in code: PitcherListBox.DataContext = this; Basically in the end, I want the combobox within the listbox to have a different itemssource than the listbox itself. I can't seem to figure out how to change the ComboBox's ItemsSource in XAML. Can someone provide me some feedback? Thanks!

• cakephp secure link using html helper link method..

  What's the best way in cakephp to extend the html-link function so that I can tell it to output a secure(https) link? Right now, I've added my own secure_link function to app_helpers that's basically a copy of the link function but adding a https to the beginning. But it seems like there should be a better way of overriding the html-link method so that I can specify a secure option. http://groups.google.com/group/cake-php/browse%5Fthread/thread/e801b31cd3db809a I also started a thread on the google groups and someone suggested doing something like $html->link('my account', array('base' => 'https://', 'controller' => 'users')); but I couldn't get that working. Just to add, this is what is outputted when I have the above code. <a href="/users/index/base:https:/">my account</a> I think there's a bug in the cake/libs/router.php on line 850. There's a keyword 'bare' and I think it should be 'base' Though changing it to base doesn't seem to fix it. From what I gather, it's telling it to exclude those keys that are passed in so that they don't get included as parameters. But I'm puzzled as to why it's a 'bare' keyword and the only reason I can come up with is that it's a type.

But that's not correct, there is still the instance of user inside the array that points to name ! The retain count of a variable should only decrease when the retain count of a referring variable is 0, that is, when it is dealloced, not released.

• Using perl to split a line that may contain whitespace

  Okay, so I'm using perl to read in a file that contains some general configuration data. This data is organized into headers based on what they mean. An example follows: [vars] # This is how we define a variable! $var = 10; $str = "Hello thar!"; # This section contains flags which can be used to modify module behavior # All modules read this file and if they understand any of the flags, use them [flags] Verbose = true; # Notice the errant whitespace! [path] WinPath = default; # Keyword which loads the standard PATH as defined by the operating system. Append with additonal values. LinuxPath = default; Goal: Using the first line as an example "$var = 10;", I'd like to use the split function in perl to create an array that contains the characters "$var" and "10" as elements. Using another line as an example: Verbose = true; # Should become [Verbose, true] aka no whitespace is present This is needed because I will be outputting these values to a new file (which a different piece of C++ code will read) to instantiate dictionary objects. • php string versus boolean speed test

  I'm looking at trying to optimise a particular function in a php app and foolishly assumed that a boolean lookup in a 'if' statement would be quicker than a string compare. But to check it I put together a short test (see below). To my surprise, the string lookup was quicker. Is there anything wrong with my test (I'm wired on too much coffee so I'm suspicious of my own code)? If not, I would be interested in any comments people have around string versus boolean lookups in php.   I'm using Javassist to generate a class foo, with method bar, but I can't seem to find a way to add an annotation (the annotation itself isn't runtime generated) to the method. • Quick help refactoring Ruby Class

  I've written this class that returns feed updates, but am thinking it can be further improved. It's not glitchy or anything, but as a new ruby developer, I reckon it's always good to improve :-) class FeedManager attr_accessor :feed_object, :update, :new_entries require 'feedtosis' def initialize(feed_url) @feed_object = Feedtosis::Client.new(feed_url) fetch end def fetch @feed_object.fetch end def update @updates = fetch end def updated? @updates.new_entries.count > 0 ? true : false end def new_entries @updates.new_entries end end As you can see, it's quite simple, but the things I'm seeing that aren't quite right are: Whenever I call fetch via terminal, it prints a list with the updates, when it's really supposed return an object. So as an example, in the terminal if I do something like: client = Feedtosis::Client.new('http://stackoverflow.com/feeds') result = client.fetch I then get: <Curl::Easy http://stackoverflow.com/feeds> Which is exactly what I'd expect. However, when doing the same thing with "inniting" class with: FeedManager.new("http://stackoverflow.com/feeds") I'm getting the object returning as an array with all the items on the feed. Sure I'm doing something wrong, so any help refactoring this class will he greatly appreciated. Also, I'd like to see comments about my implementation, as well as any sort of comment to make it better would be welcome. Thanks in advance

The problem is when I run my code I keep on getting: Uncaught TypeError: Cannot call method 'toLowerCase' of undefined I googled around and came tried changing my jquery file to both using the minified and non minified as well as the one hosted on google code and I kept getting the same error. • Top 10 collection completion - a monster in-query formula in MySQL?

  I've got the following tables: User Basic Data (unique) [userid] [name] [etc] User Collection (one to one) [userid] [game] User Recorded Plays (many to many) [userid] [game] [scenario] [etc] Game Basic Data (unique) [game] [total_scenarios] I would like to output a table that shows the collection play completion percentage for the Top 10 users in descending order of %: Output Table [userid] [collection_completion] 3 95% 1 81% 24 68% etc etc In my mind, the calculation sequence for ONE USER is: grab user's total owned scenarios from User Collection joined with Game Basic Data and COUNT(gbd.total_scenarios) grab all recorded plays by COUNT(DISTINCT scenario) for that user Divide all recorded plays by total owned scenarios So that's 2 queries and a little PHP massage at the end. For a list of users sorted by completion percentage things get a little more complicated. I figure I could grab all users' collection totals in one query, and all users recorded plays in another, and then do the calcs and sort the final array in PHP, but it seems like overkill to potentially be doing all that for 1000+ users when I only ever want the Top 10. Is there a wicked monster query in MySQL that could do all that and LIMIT 10? Or is sticking with PHP handling the bulk of the work the way to go in this case?

• 3 index buffers

  So, in both D3D and OpenGL there's ability to draw from an index buffer. The OBJ file format however does something weird. It specifies a bunch of vertices like: v -21.499660 6.424470 4.069845 v -25.117170 6.418100 4.068025 v -21.663851 8.282170 4.069585 v -21.651890 6.420180 4.068675 v -25.128481 8.281520 4.069585 Then it specifies a bunch of normals like.. vn 0.196004 0.558984 0.805680 vn -0.009523 0.210194 -0.977613 vn -0.147787 0.380832 -0.912757 vn 0.822108 0.567581 0.044617 vn 0.597037 0.057507 -0.800150 vn 0.809312 -0.045432 0.585619 Then it specifies a bunch of tex coords like vt 0.1225 0.5636 vt 0.6221 0.1111 vt 0.4865 0.8888 vt 0.2862 0.2586 vt 0.5865 0.2568 vt 0.1862 0.2166 THEN it specifies "faces" on the model like: f 1/2/5 2/3/7 8/2/6 f 5/9/7 6/3/8 5/2/1 So, in trying to render this with vertex buffers, In OpenGL I can use glVertexPointer, glNormalPointer and glTexCoordPointer to set pointers to each of the vertex, normal and texture coordinate arrays respectively.. but when it comes down to drawing with glDrawElements, I can only specify ONE set of indices, namely the indices it should use when visiting the vertices. Ok, then what? I still have 3 sets of indices to visit. In d3d its much the same - I can set up 3 streams: one for vertices, one for texcoords, and one for normals, but when it comes to using IDirect3DDevice9::DrawIndexedPrimitive, I can still only specify ONE index buffer, which will index into the vertices array. So, is it possible to draw from vertex buffers using different index arrays for each of the vertex, texcoord, and normal buffers (EITHER d3d or opengl!)
