  I have a Visual Studio 2008 solution with two projects (a Word-Template project and a VB.Net console application for testing). Both projects reference a database project which opens a connection to an MS-Access 2007 database file and have references to System.Data.OleDb. • Consume webservice from a .NET DLL - app.config problem

  Hi, I'm building a DLL, let's call it mydll.dll, and in it I sometimes need to call methods from webservice, myservice. mydll.dll is built using C# and .NET 3.5. To consume myservice from mydll I've Added A Service in Visual Studio 2008, which is more or less the same as using svcutil.exe. Doing so creates a class I can create, and adds endpoint and bindings configurations to mydll app.config. The problem here is that mydll app.config is never loaded. Instead, what's loaded is the app.config or web.config of the program I use mydll in. I expect mydll to evolve, which is why I've decoupled it's funcionality from the rest of my system to begin with. During that evolution it will likely add more webservice to which it'll call, ruling out manual copy-paste ways to overcome this problem. I've looked at several possible approaches to attacking this issue: Manually copy endpoints and bindings from mydell app.config to target EXE or web .config file. Couples the modules, not flexible Include endpoints and bindings from mydll app.config in target .config, using configSource (see here). Also add coupling between modules Programmatically load mydll app.config, read endpoints and bindings, and instantiate Binding and EndpointAddress. Use a different tool to create local frontend for myservice I'm not sure which way to go. Option 3 sounds promising, but as it turns out it's a lot of work and will probably introduce several bugs, so it doubtfully pays off. I'm also not familiar with any tool other than the canonical svcutil.exe. Please either give pros and cons for the above alternative, provide tips for implementing any of them, or suggest other approaches. Thanks, Asaf

• Wrapping mailmessage headers in .net for Sendgrid

  Am using SendGrid for some email notifications, specifically utilising their SMTP API's. While they have PHP examples, c# is not so helpful. Essentially, a json string is built that contains the to email addresses, and other custom filters etc, which is then added to a MailMessage header to send. // json string example {"to":["[email protected]", [email protected]", "", ""],"sub":{"<name>":["Name1", Name2"]}} MailMessage m = new MailMessage("[email protected]", "[email protected]"); m.Headers.Add("X-SMTPAPI", jsonString); The problem I am having is that for some MTA's, headers can only be 1000 characters long, and also quoted-principle encoding required only 76 character per line. In their php example, they are splitting the string and adding a linebreak (\n) every 72 characters. While I am doing this in .NET, I am receiving a invalid character exception. After some digging, it seems that pre-.NET4.0 Beta2 MailMessage will not process CLLR characters. Sengrid support is not proving helpful, and looking at ways to make this work?

• .NET socket timeout - blocking on Close method

  I'm having trouble implementing a connect timeout using asynchronous socket calls. The idea being that I call BeginConnect on a Socket object, then use a timer to call Close() on the socket after a timeout period has elapsed. This works fine as long as the socket is created on the GUI thread - the Close method returns immediately, and the callback method is executed. However, if the socket is created on any other thread, the Close method blocks until the default IP timeout occurs. • Git-based storage and publishing, infrastructure advice

  I wanted to get some advice on moving a system to "the cloud" ... specifically, I'm looking to move into some of Windows Azure's managed services, as right now I'm managing a VM. Basically, the system operates on some data stored in a github git repository. I'll describe the current architecture: Current system (all hosted on a single server): GitHub - configured with a webhook pointing at ... ASP.NET MVC application - to accept the webhook from git. It pushes a message onto ... Azure service bus Queue - which is drained by ... Windows Service - pulls the message from the queue and ... Fetches the latest data from the git repository (using GitLib2Sharp) onto the local disk and finally ... Operates on the data in git to produce a static HTML website hosted/served by IIS. The system works really well, actually ... but I would like to get out of the business of managing the VM, and move to using some combination of Azure web and worker roles. But because the system relies so heavily on the git repository on the local filesystem, I'm finding it difficult to figure out how to architect in the cloud. I know you can get file system access, so in theory I could just fetch the repository if there's nothing on disk ... but the performance/responsiveness of the system sort of depends on the repository being available and only having to fetch diffs, which is relatively quick. As opposed to periodically having to fetch the entire (somewhat large) git repository if the web or worker role was recycled, or something. So I would love some advice on how you would architect such a system :) Ultimately, the only real requirement is to be able to serve HTML content that's been produced from the contents of a git repository (in a relatively responsive manner, from a publishing perspective) ... please feel free to ask any clarifying questions if there's something I omitted.   Every time I start in deep in a C# project, I end up with lots of events that really just need to pass a single item. I stick with the EventHandler/EventArgs practice, but what I like to do is have something like: public delegate void EventHandler<T>(object src, EventArgs<T> args); public class EventArgs<T>: EventArgs { private T item; public EventArgs(T item) { this.item = item; } public T Item { get { return item; } } } Later, I can have my public event EventHandler<Foo> FooChanged; public event EventHandler<Bar> BarChanged; However, it seems that the standard for .NET is to create a new delegate and EventArgs subclass for each type of event. Is there something wrong with my generic approach? EDIT: The reason for this post is that I just re-created this in a new project, and wanted to make sure it was ok. Actually, I was re-creating it as I posted. I found that there is a generic EventHandler<TEventArgs, so you don't need to create the generic delegate, but you still need the generic EventArgs<T class, because TEventArgs: EventArgs. Another EDIT: One downside (to me) of the built-in solution is the extra verbosity: public event EventHandler<EventArgs<Foo>> FooChanged; vs. public event EventHandler<Foo> FooChanged; It can be a pain for clients to register for your events though, because the System namespace is imported by default, so they have to manually seek out your namespace, even with a fancy tool like Resharper... Anyone have any ideas pertaining to that?

• Powershell / .Net: Get a reference to an object returned by a method

  I am teaching myself PowerShell by writing a simple parser. I use the .Net framework class Collections.Stack. I want to modify the object at the top of the stack in place. I know I can pop() the object off, modify it, and then push() it back on, but that strikes me as inelegant. First, I tried this: $stk = new-object Collections.Stack $stk.push( (,'My first value') ) ( $stk.peek() ) += ,'| My second value' Which threw an error: Assignment failed because [System.Collections.Stack] doesn't contain a settable property 'peek()'. At C:\Development\StackOverflow\PowerShell-Stacks\test.ps1:3 char:12 + ( $stk.peek <<<< () ) += ,'| My second value' + CategoryInfo : InvalidOperation: (peek:String) [], RuntimeException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : ParameterizedPropertyAssignmentFailed Next I tried this: $ary = $stk.peek() $ary += ,'| My second value' write-host "Array is: $ary" write-host "Stack top is: $($stk.peek())" Which prevented the error but still didn't do the right thing: Array is: My first value | My second value Stack top is: My first value Clearly, what is getting assigned to $ary is a copy of the object at the top of the stack, so when I the object in $ary, the object at the top of the stack remains unchanged. Finally, I read up on teh [ref] type, and tried this: $ary_ref = [ref]$stk.peek() $ary_ref.value += ,'| My second value' write-host "Referenced array is: $($ary_ref.value)" write-host "Stack top is still: $($stk.peek())" But still no dice: Referenced array is: My first value | My second value Stack top is still: My first value I assume the peek() method returns a reference to the actual object, not the clone. If so, then the reference appears to be being replaced by a clone by PowerShell's expression processing logic. Can somebody tell me if there is a way to do what I want to do? Or do I have to revert to pop() / modify / push()?

However, I get an "Object required" runtime error on the final line. Why does setting the value via the setter method work but setting via the property fail? What do I have to change to get the property to work as expected?

• Is using the .NET Image Conversion enough?

  I've seen a lot of people try to code their own image conversion techniques. It often seems to be very complicated, and ends up using GDI+ function calls, and manipulating bits of the image. This has got me wondering if I am missing something in the simplicity of .NET's image conversion call when saving an image. Here's the code I have: Bitmap tempBmp = new Bitmap("c:\temp\img.jpg"); Bitmap bmp = new Bitmap(tempBmp, 800, 600); bmp.Save(c:\temp\img.bmp, //extension depends on format ImageFormat.Bmp) //These are all the ImageFormats I allow conversion to within the program. Ignore the syntax for a second ;) ImageFormat.Gif) //or ImageFormat.Jpeg) //or ImageFormat.Png) //or ImageFormat.Tiff) //or ImageFormat.Wmf) //or ImageFormat.Bmp)//or ); This is all I'm doing in my image conversion. Just setting the location of where the image should be saved, and passing it an ImageFormat type. I've tested it the best I can, but I'm wondering if I am missing anything in this simple format conversion, or if this is sufficient?

• Sync Vs. Async Sockets Performance in .NET

  Everything that I read about sockets in .NET says that the asynchronous pattern gives better performance (especially with the new SocketAsyncEventArgs which saves on the allocation). I think this makes sense if we're talking about a server with many client connections where its not possible to allocate one thread per connection. Then I can see the advantage of using the ThreadPool threads and getting async callbacks on them. But in my app, I'm the client and I just need to listen to one server sending market tick data over one tcp connection. Right now, I create a single thread, set the priority to Highest, and call Socket.Receive() with it. My thread blocks on this call and wakes up once new data arrives. If I were to switch this to an async pattern so that I get a callback when there's new data, I see two issues The threadpool threads will have default priority so it seems they will be strictly worse than my own thread which has Highest priority. I'll still have to send everything through a single thread at some point. Say that I get N callbacks at almost the same time on N different threadpool threads notifying me that there's new data. The N byte arrays that they deliver can't be processed on the threadpool threads because there's no guarantee that they represent N unique market data messages because TCP is stream based. I'll have to lock and put the bytes into an array anyway and signal some other thread that can process what's in the array. So I'm not sure what having N threadpool threads is buying me. Am I thinking about this wrong? Is there a reason to use the Async patter in my specific case of one client connected to one server?

• Using Word COM objects in .NET, InlineShapes not copied from template to document

  Using .NET and the Word Interop I am programmatically creating a new Word doc from a template (.dot) file. There are a few ways to do this but I've chosen to use the AttachedTemplate property, as such: Dim oWord As New Word.Application() oWord.Visible = False Dim oDocuments As Word.Documents = oWord.Documents Dim oDoc As Word.Document = oDocuments.Add() oDoc.AttachedTemplate = sTemplatePath oDoc.UpdateStyles() (I'm choosing the AttachedTemplate means of doing this over the Documents.Add() method because of a memory leak issue I discovered when using Documents.Add() to open from templates.) This works fine EXCEPT when there is an image (represented as an InlineShape) in the template footer. In that case the image does not appear in the resulting document. Specifically the image should appear in the oDoc.Sections.Item(1).Footers.Item(WdHeaderFooterIndex.wdHeaderFooterPrimary).Range.InlineShapes collection but it does not. This is not a problem when using Documents.Add(), however as I said that method is not an option for me. Is there an extra step I have to take to get the images from the template? I already discovered that when using AttachedTemplate I have to explicitly call UpdateStyles() (as you can see in my code snippet) to apply the template styles to the document, whereas that is done automatically when using Documents.Add(). Or maybe there's some crazy workaround? Your help is much appreciated! :)

• Overriding windows authentication for a .NET application

  I have a .NET application where the homepage (default.aspx) should be accessible by anyone. There is also a reporting page (reporting.aspx) that I want to secure via windows authentication and only allow access to a particular set of AD groups. Right now the way my web.config is setup it is securing the reporting page but on the home page it prompts the user for login credentials. If they hit esc they can continue to the page though so it isnt actually securing it. I need to prevent it from prompting the user. How do i need to setup my config.   I have my subject .Net acedemically. I also learned core Java and did a project as well. I took training from a Java firm. Now, as a skill I do have knowledge as both language. But, it is creating a large problem to me that, which field I should chhose? Even if having better OOP fundamentals, will it be easier for me to transfer from one to another in the future ? Please suggest me a way. Also, we do have may technologies available at both side, like JSP, JSF, J2ME, Share Point, SilverLight etc. Which is better as per their reliabity point of view? Which are fast growing and useful technologies used mostly in current IT corporate world ? Are they easier to learn at fresher's point of view? Please answer.   OK it has unfortunately been a while since I've used REGEX and I am struggling to wonder why its not working with my project. I have used Regex Tester which says my two tests are valid but when it comes to testing in my project they get rejected. 1) Check the text starts with certain characters [RegularExpression("(spAPP)",ErrorMessage = "Stored procedures must begin with spAPP")] This seems to accept spAPP on it's own, but not something like spAPPabcdef which I want it to. I am struggling to find the "Ignore rest of the text" attribute with REGEX. 2) A bit more complicated. I have certain naming conventions for AD groups, so an example would be "UK ROLE IT APPLICATION DEV ADMIN", up to the role name there are standards (so I need the "UK ROLE IT APPLICATION DEV" checked. [RegularExpression(@"((UK|FRANCE|GERMANY|USA)\s(ROLE)\s(IT|NON-IT)\s(APPLICATION)\s(DEV|TEST|LIVE))", ErrorMessage = "Please use AD naming standards.")] I think it might be the fact I am using () around all the words, but its easier to read in my code. The RegexTester I found seems to indicate that it's right, but again, in my .NET project, it rejects it. Thanks,

• .NET regex: Match.nextMatch() never returns

  I have a regex that seems to have worked fine for the past year or so, and all of a sudden today with a new slightly different text to match against, Match.nextMatch() never returns. I'm no regex expert and I'm sure the regex can be optimized, but previous data sets weren't much more complex than what I've tried today. Furthermore, the regex works fine against the offending data set in a tool like RegexBuddy; it's only in .net (running in debug in Visual Studio) that it seems to hang. Nevertheless, if anyone can figure out how to tweak the regex to make it work, I'd really appreciate it.   VS 2008 / VB.Net / WinForms I have an application setting (Settings.settings) for a project and I am using Click Once deployment. I used the VS Editor to create the setting and I can see the setting in the app.config file <applicationSettings> <MyApp.Win.My.MySettings> <setting name="MySetting" serializeAs="String"> <value>False</value> </setting> </MyApp.ArtTracker.Win.My.MySettings> </applicationSettings> I would like to update this setting after the application is compiled. The setting is for testing purposes only. If I change the xxx.config.deploy and I reinstall the app with click once. The new setting value doesn't change (seems to be cached somewhere). Even if I change in my local pc the setting seems to be cached somewhere. If I go in VS it asks me to Re-Sync the settings. But I need to do this after the application is compiled. • C# .NET : Is using the .NET Image Conversion enough?

  I've seen a lot of people try to code their own image conversion techniques. It often seems to be very complicated, and ends up using GDI+ funciton calls, and manipulating bits of the image. This has got me wondering if I am missing something in the simplicity of .NET's image conversion call when saving an image. Here's the code I have Bitmap tempBmp = new Bitmap("c:\temp\img.jpg"); Bitmap bmp = new Bitmap(tempBmp, 800, 600); bmp.Save(c:\temp\img.bmp, //extension depends on format ImageFormat.Bmp) //These are all the ImageFormats I allow conversion to within the program. Ignore the syntax for a second ;) ImageFormat.Gif) //or ImageFormat.Jpeg) //or ImageFormat.Png) //or ImageFormat.Tiff) //or ImageFormat.Wmf) //or ImageFormat.Bmp)//or ); This is all I'm doing in my image conversion. Just setting the location of where the image should be saved, and passing it an ImageFormat type. I've tested it the best I can, but I'm wondering if I am missing anything in this simple format conversion, or if this is suffice?
