    Hi Guys, We are in the process of encrypting all the SSN columns (had to do it now due to security audit). We already built the DBML and now we have to change it. Can you guys let me know if there is a good way of handling this in LINQ to SQL? We use stored procedures for Insert, Update and Delete but use LINQ to SQL for all our selects (ease of use). Do I have to change the format for those tables with SSN or Is there any other manner we can handle it in LINQ to SQL? Thanks, Raja

  • How to store Ruby method references in a database?

    I am writing my first rails app. It needs to aggregate some data from multiple sites and for each site I have a unique way of getting the data (some provide RSS, some JSON, for some I scrape the HTML etc.). These will run on schedule, probably as a rake task from cron. It seems logical to store the sites and relevant information in a model, but I am not sure where to put unique data retrieval methods. Do I store method names in the model? Do I just name the methods the same as site name and call them that way? Basically, I need a way to read a list of sites and call appropriate method for each site. What is the Ruby on Rails way to do it?

  • Java+DOM: How do I convert a DOM tree without namespaces to a namespace-aware DOM tree?

    Hello, everyone! I receive a Document (DOM tree) from a certain API (not in JDK). Sadly, this Document is not namespace-aware. As far as I know DOM, once generated, namespace-awareness can't be "added" afterwards. When converting this Document using a Transformer to a string, the XML is correct. Elements have xmlns:... attributes and name prefixes. But from the DOM point of view, there are no namespaces and no prefixes. I need to be able to convert this Document into a new Document which is namespace-aware. Yes, I could do this by just converting it to a string and back to DOM with namespaces enabled. But: nodes of the original tree have user-objects set. Converting to string and back would make a mapping of these user-objects to the new Document very complicated, if not impossible. So I really need a way to convert non-namespace DOM to namespace DOM. Are there any more-or-less straightforward solutions for this? Worst case (what I'm hoping to avoid) would be to manually iterate through old Document tree and create new namespace-aware Node for each old Node. Doing so, one had to manually "parse" namespace prefixes, watch out for xmlns-attributes, and maintain a mapping between prefixes and namespace-URIs. Lots of things to go wrong.

I want to do this using Regex because I think this is the quickest way. But the problem is my regex knowledge is too limited

    I'm looking for a MySQL equivalent of what str_replace is for PHP. I want to replace all instances of one word with another, I want to run a query that will replace all "apples" with "oranges". The reason why: UPDATE fruits SET name='oranges' WHERE name='apples'; isn't going to work for my situation, is because I often times have multiple words in a table row separated by commas like: "apples, pears, pineapples". In this case I want just apples to be replaced by oranges and pear and pineapples to stay in tact. Is there any way to do this?

    I have a sql statement where I'm joining about 4 tables, each with 200K rows. The query runs, but keeps freezing. When I do a join on 3 tables instead, it returns the rows (takes about 10secs). The problem is that when I have one message, I get an error thrown at me: undefined methodeach'` How do I force rails to always return an array of messages even if there's only one message so that each always works? However, when the height of the document is the same or less than the window the method above will not work because scrollTop() will always be equal to 0. This becomes a problem if the DOM is updated and the height of the document grows beyond the height of the window after the code runs. Also, I generally don't wait until document.ready to set up my javascript handlers (this generally works). I could append a tall div to the body temporarily to force the method above to work BUT that would required the document to be ready in IE (you can't add a node to the body element before the tag is closed). For more reading on the document.ready "anti-pattern" topic read this. So, I'd love to find a solution that finds the scrollable element even when the document is short. Any ideas?

    I'm writing a webapp, and interfacing with MySQL using Hibernate 3.5. Using "?????? ?????????" as my test string, I can input the string and see that it is properly persisted into the database. However, when I later pull the value out of the database and print to the console as a String, I see "?????? ?????????". If I use new OutputStreamWriter(System.out,"UTF-8"); then I get "„Éá„Çp„ÇØ„Éà„ÉÉ„Éó ·Éò·Éú·Éí·Éö·Éò·É°·É£·É†·Éò"". Why don't I see the original string?     For example, I alter a column in a table to be not null from null. I need to then delete and readd the table. That part is pretty clear. What about views, functions, and stored procedures that access the table, especially that column in the table? I've tried running diffs against the files generated by SQLMetal with some limited success, but even with that it's fairly unclear. I know there is at least one commercial tool out there that claims to address this problem, but I am looking for something free. How are people dealing with this issue?

    I want to generate something like the following: LineItems Id ItemId OrderId Price Orders Id CustomerId DateCreated Customers Id FirstName LastName Email I don't need all the relationships, the diagram that will never print correctly, the metadata, anything. Just a list of the tables and their columns in a simple text format. Has anyone done this before? Is there a simple solution? Thanks, Kyle
