• Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Server - fresh install - failed apt-get update

  Good day and greetings to all, I just did a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS server without any issues. However, the apt-get update or aptitude update is giving the following errors: a. bzip2:(stdin) is not bzip2 file.ign for all lines plus the following errors : etched 3,582B in 0s (74.1kB/s) Reading package lists... W: A error occurred during the signature verification. • using Moniker.com's nameservers

  I have a VPS with A2Hosting for which i need to upgrade the OS. However, they've changed their VPS packages and forced me to order a new one. I went with an "unmanaged" package and have only just realised that they do not provide any DNS service at all, not even nameservers. Support tells me that "since your domain is not hosted with us, but with Moniker, you would not be able to use these nameservers. Your domain registrar should have a set of default nameservers that you can use, then create a A record to point to" my IP address. Moniker does provide for using their nameservers but i'm confused about which "pre-defined zone configuration" to use. They are: Domain Parking Domain Parking with Email Forwarding URL and Email Forwarding URL Forwarding URL Forwarding & CoolHandle Email I just want to use their nameserver and then create A & MX records pointing to the VPS. What do they mean by forwarding? I get the feeling it's a service that i don't want. Or, is it that i need to have a pre-defined zone only temporarily, and THEN set the A & MX? Which of these should i choose.

• Oracle Secure Global Desktop - Business Continuity During Snowstorm!

  Capgemini, one of the world's largest management consulting, outsourcing and professional services companies, is an Oracle Secure Global Desktop customer and uses it to provide secure, remote access to 1) corporate applications centralized in the datacenter and 2) desktops hosted on Oracle VDI. Earlier this month, one of Capgemini's government customers in Holland were advised to avoid traveling to work, due to a heavy snowstorm. This resulted in a lot of employees working from home. Thankfully due to their deployment of the Oracle Secure Global Desktop gateway, employees were able to easily access their corporate applications and desktops from home and anywhere outside of their office. Capgemini reports that during the days of the snowstorm, a record number of users leveraged Oracle Secure Global Desktop (servers and gateway). Despite this record usage, Oracle Secure Global Desktop remained perfectly stable and allowed users to seamlessly access their applications and desktops. This is a great example of how Oracle Secure Global Desktop allows employee productivity and business continuity even during severe weather conditions such as snowstorms. • The NEW Oracle Enterprise Manager Extensibility Exchange

  Oracle Enterprise Manager continues to expand its Eco-system with the NEW Extensibility Exchange! The Exchange offers a searchable listing of Enterprise Manager entities. Today it’s stocked with plug-ins and connectors for Enterprise Manager 12c and 11g. Anyone - partners, customers, ACE community members, anyone - can post an entity subject to approval of course. So in addition to plug-ins and connectors, the Exchange will have best practices, deployment procedures, templates, and essentially any Enterprise Manager entity that’s relevant. • Documenting your database with Visual Studio 2012 SSDT tools

  The title of this post is interesting and something I am wishing you and your colleagues had a better way to do. I understand as I am asked this question frequently. I couple of weeks ago I was asked the same question by a customer who documents their database using the ApexSQL Doc tools which uses the extended properties on objects to create automated documentation. I thought that was super interesting and went down the path to see how we could could support the creation of this documentation while leveraging the Visual Studio 2012 SSDT Tools. What I found is was rather intriguing. There is a property called “Description” on all objects in the SSDT tools. This property is rather subtle and I am betting overlooked. To be honest, this property has probably been there for a while and I just never discovered it. Adding text to this '”Description” property it allows Visual Studio to create the commands for the extended properties directly to your schema which should be version controlled. As I did more digging there seemed to be extended properties at every level in the SQL database objects. This fills some rather challenging gaps and allows organizations to manage SQL Schema using the Visual Studio SQL database tools while allowing a way to automatically document the database. This will also work in the automation of the creation and alter scripts that can be generated as part f an automated build system. Now we essentially get a way to store, build and document the database in a nice little ALM package. Happy Coding!

• If I implement a web-service, how do I respond to POST requests with JSON?

  I have to make a rather complex system for my diploma work. Logically it will consist of the following components: Database Web-service Management with web interface Client iOS application that will consume web-service I decided to implement all the first three components under .NET. Firstly I will create a database depending on the information load - this is clear. But then I need a web-service that will return data in JSON format for iOS clients to consume - that's obvious and not that hard to implement. For this I will use WCF technology. Now I have a question, if I implement the web-service, how will I be able to respond to POST requests with JSON? It probably involves WCF JSON or something related? But I also need some web pages as admin part, so will this web-application be able to consume my centralized web-services as well or I should develop it separately? I just want my web service to act like a set of controllers. There is a related question here but this doesn't quite reflect my question.

  What did you learn today? Everyday teaches you something, some lesson or the other. Some day you learn a new language, a new skill or a new hobby or visit some new place, learn music, have a different dining experience, learn swimming, make some good friends, get in touch with some old friend etc. etc…. Each of these things teaches you something… So, what did you learn today? Some of the learnings from my past weeks are outlined below… Respect others. Don’t underestimate them. (Though I never consciously do so) Be careful with your words because words have different meanings if the context is not clear. Spend some time for your personal stuff and allow others do so. Every individual is different, their skills different, their thoughts are different, their perceptions are different. So, be polite. Time management. (This is a tough skill to master). At the end of the day I keep looking for more time so may be you. So, again What did you learn today? This reflection is important because if you don’t know what you are learning at every stage in your life, then your are not learning and not growing. In short you are not living. Learning is not memorization but it is self realization….. Happy learning!!!

  I have completed a web site Surfrainbow using ASP.NET and working fine. Completely dynamic with back-end management and Ajax support. This site has to be 100% same as in Java considering look and feel. Conversion is for learning purpose. I am new to Java and learning it fast. I don't want to know how to learn Java. Just want to know what is needed for this project to work in Java related technologies. Want to know How would you handle this project. My questions are 1 - What technologies I will be needing to make this project like Servlets, JSP, JSF etc? 2 - What is needed for Ajax support. Is JQuery supported :)? 3 - What should be used for MVC? 4 - ASP.NET has master pages to simplify design. Anything like this in Java? 5 - Which IDE is best for Java development. JDeveloper/NetBeans? • 'Xojo' is the only application that I can't install

  I can't install xojo. When I click install in the software center it's not progressing. So i uncheck: Added by software-center; credentials stored in /etc/apt/auth.conf https://private-ppa.launchpad.net/commercial-ppa-uploaders/xojo/ubuntu GPG error was gone. But then again I found myself at the beginning of the problem.STUCK at '0% [Working]'. 'Xojo' is the only application that I can't install.Any explanation why is it like that?

• Simple monitoring of a Raspberry Pi powered screen - Part 2

  If you have read my previous blog post Raspberry Pi entrance signed backed by Umbraco - Part 1 which describes how we used a Raspberry Pi to drive an Entrance sign for QV Offices you will have seen I mentioned a follow up post about monitoring the sign.As the sign is mounted in the entrance of the building on the ground floor and the reception is on the 1st floor, this meant that if there was a fault of any kind showing on the screen, the first person to see this was inevitably one of QV Offices' clients as they walked into the building.Although the QV Offices' team were able to check the Umbraco website address that the sign uses, this did not always mean that everything was working as expected. We noticed a couple of times that the sign had Wifi issues (it is now hard wired) and this caused the Chromium browser to render a 404 error when it tried to refresh the screen.The simple monitoring solutionWe added the following line to our refresh script, so that after the sign had been refreshed a screen shot of the Raspberry Pi would be taken:import -display :0 -window root ~/screenshot.jpgFinally we wrote a small Crontab task that ran on a QV Offices Mac that grabs this screen shot and saved it on the desktop, admittedly we have used a package that it not mega secure, but in reality this is an internal system that only runs an office sign, so we are not to concerned about it being hacked.*/5 * * * * /usr/local/bin/sshpass -p 'password' /usr/bin/scp [email protected]:screenshot.jpg Desktop/QVScreenShot.jpgAs the file icon updates, if the image changes, this gives a quick visual indication of the status of the sign, if for some reason the icon does not look correct the QV Offices administrator can just click on the file to see the exact image currently displayed on the sign.Sometimes a quick and easy solution is better than a more complex and expensive one.

• Ubuntu 9.10 + LXDE Error unmet dependencies

  I am working on Ubuntu 9.10 + LXDE as my current project. I am finding it difficult to install any new packages on this OS. For example, I need to install OpenCv package for qt webcam application, but every time it gives unmet dependencies error.And when i try to install dependencies it again show some more dependencies and so on and forms a circular loops. for example: sudo apt-get install libcv-dev .. .... The following packages have unmet dependencies: libcv-dev: Depends: libhighgui-dev (=1.0.0-6.2ubuntu1) but it is not going to installed. E: Broken packages Then I try to install libhighgui-dev as follow: sudo appt-get install libhighgui-dev .. ... The following packages have unmet dependencies: libhighgui-dev: Depends: libgtk2.0-dev but it is not going to installed E: Broken packages And this goes on never ending. Please suggest me something, as i have googled a lot and did not found any help. It may be , i m missing some primary packages to be installed.But how to find it?   I've been writing games for around 10 years now (from QBasic to C# and everything in-between). I need to start stretching my skills into different areas. What are other, surprising topics I should read up on? Expected topics would include the usual suspects: Programming language of your choice Scripting language Source control Project management (or Agile) Graphics API Maybe some AI (A* path-finding?) Physics (projectile physics) Unit testing (automated testing) I'm looking for more esoteric topics; things that you don't expect to need to know, but if you do know them, they make a difference. This could include things like: Art skills (drawing, lighting, colouring, layout, etc.) Natural language processing The physics of sound (sound-waves, doppler effect, etc.) Personally, I feel that having technical art skills (eg. can make decent art-work if you can only come up with ideas; or, following Photoshop/GIMP tutorials) was the most beneficial for me. This is not intended to be an open-ended question; I'm looking for specific skills that helped you and you expect will continue to benefit you in the short- and long-term.

• Recommendations for a web-based help system

  Hi Experts, I'm putting together a fairly large GUI. I'm a tech person, but more on the hardware side, not software. I'm wondering what software package would be best suited to enable me to generate a web-based help-system. Preferably it takes care of a lot of coding, allowing me to focus on the content. For example, the user would click on a link in the GUI when they have a question, that brings them to a web-based Help Guide, for example, providing an overview of how to use the GUI, perhaps a searchable index (key-word based index), table of contents, etc, for navigating through the Help Guide. My first thought was to program everything in XHTML using Dreamweaver, but my layout requirements are fairly modest (just figures and text, maybe a few equations), and I'd prefer not to spend a lot of time concentrating on the programming. Was wondering if any software existed that made generating web-based navigatable pages easy to create/publish. Again, I'm not really a programmer, so if there's something obvious out there, I'm probably not aware of it. Any advice much appreciated! Thanks in advance.

• Is having functionality in DB a road block to scalability?

  I may not be able to give the right title to the question. But here it is, We are developing financial portal for wealth management. We are expecting over 10000 clients to use the application. The portal calculates various performance analytics based on the the technical analysis of the stock market. We developed lot of the functionality through Stored procedures, user defined functions, triggers etc. through Database. We thought we can gain huge performance boost doing stuff directly in database than through C# code. And we actually did get a huge performance boost. When I tried to brag about the achievement to our CTO, he counter questioned my decision of having functionality implemented in database rather than code. According to him such applications suffer scalability problems. In his words "These days things are kept in memory/cache. Clustered data is hard to manage over time. Facebook, Google have nothing in database. It is the era of thin servers and thick clients. DB is used only to store plain data and functionality should be completely decoupled from the database." Can you guys please give me some suggestions as to whether what he says is right. How to go about architect such an application?

  For a prospective client we have to offer a solution to provide following system: CMS Order Management Shopping Cart CRM Helpdesk Accounting & Finance Custom Functions In order to save time and to avoid reinvent the wheel our idea is to integrate different off-the-shelf solutions. Their first requirement is that the system has to be hosted in their country which I think will exclude application like Aplicor, Netsuite & Salesforce. Basically the nucleaus would be the CMS which would integrate all the other apps. PHP or .Net based solutions would be our preferences as have inhouse expertise. So far following are few combinations I have come up with: Joomla (CMS) + Virtuemart (Cart+Ordering) + Sugar CRM + Open ERP (finance) + OTRS Magento (CMS+Cart+Ordering) + Sugar CRM + Open ERP (finance) + Helpdesk Ultimate Drupal (CMS) + Ubercart (Cart+Ordering) + Sugar CRM + Open ERP (finance) + Support Ticketing System Sharepoint (CMS) + OptimusBt (Cart+Ordering) + Dynamics CRM + Great Plains + SharepointHQ Dotnetnuke (CMS) + DNNSpot (Cart+Ordering) + Sigma Pro (CRM+Helpdesk) + Open ERP For Helpdesk I liked Zendesk but the server location was the stopping factor, similar for finance and CRM I liked Aplicor.   A portion of my job is to maintain technical documentation for a rapidly expanding manufacturing company. Because it is only a portion of my job and the company's product line is expanding so quickly, I can't stay on top of the documentation. As a result, I've been yearning for an information management system with a handful of specific features. I've found many products that have a subset, but none that have all the features I'm looking for. I'm at the point of picking an existing product and expanding it to cover my desired feature set, however, this will be a pet project and I will be learning the underlying language as I go. So, the main question is which existing product will be the easiest to expand to cover the full feature set and has a relatively easy to learn language? Alternatively, have I missed another existing program that will cover the feature set or should be in my list of "close, but not quite there"? • Gnome3 shell video corruption with ATI Radeon HD 4850 on 11.10 Oneiric

  I have a problem similar to what's been mentioned in a few other questions, namely: Ati incompatible with Gnome-shell? Gnome Shell Glitched Top Bar Ubuntu 11.10 I have read a number of other posts here and on other forums and have tried a bunch of different solutions. The Problem The problem manifests itself only in Gnome3. I have tried KDE, Unity and KFCE and all are fine. The graphics corruption is visible only on gnome panels (see images below). Everything works fine with the free ATI drivers, but they just lack power. The problem occurs with the proprietary ones from AMD/ATI. I have installed version 11.11 and 12.1 as per the instructions on wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Oneiric_Installation_Guide. I have the same exact problem in both cases. I have tried this on clean installs of Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot (x64 and x86) and on Linux Mint 12 (x64) with the same results. Also, it looks like after some time of not using it, the PC just freezes. Maybe an overheat? Will look into it. Things I've Tried I have tried the following fixes: Different versions of drivers from ATI including the latest - this worked for some, not for me. Installing Oneiric specific package generated from driver, as well as the default install Removed the Unity Global menu Disabled file manager handling desktop Disabled Compiz "detect refresh rate" Sync to VBlank in Compiz on and off Please help! This is the first time in 10 years that I've finally had the chance to switch my primary desktop to Linux (stopped doing .NET dev work), and this is really getting me down.
