  Hello All, I am using the JPA(hibernate) for the ORM and c3po for connection pooling.   Hello. I have a structure of folders like this: Folder1 Folder1.1 Folder1.2 Folder2 Folder2.1 Folder2.1.1 and so on.. The question is how to cascade delete them(i.e. when remove folder2 all children are also deleted). I can't set an ON DELETE action because MSSQL does not allow it. Can you give some suggesions? • Is saving to database just to get an ID a bad hack?

  I hope the title is not too confusing. I am trying to make folders with linq-to-sql objects' IDs. Actually I have to create folders before I should save them. I will use them to keep user uploaded files. As you can see I have to create the folder with the FileID before I can save it there. So I just save a record which will be edited or maybe deleted File newFile = new File(); ...//add some values to fields so they don't throw rule violations db.AddFile(newFile); db.Save(); System.IO.Directory.CreateDirectory("..Uploads/"+newFile.FileId.ToString()); After that I will have to edit some fields and save again. Of course user might stop upload and I would have to delete it. I know I can write a stored procedure to get the next available FileID but some other upload happening at the same time would get the same number. So they would write in same directory which is a thing I don't want. Should I go on with this, would there be some problems? Can you think of a better way?

  What I'm trying to do is to update my database after a period of time. So I'm using java scheduler and connection pooling. I don't know why but my code only working once. It will print: init success success javax.naming.NameNotFoundException: Name [comp/env] is not bound in this Context. I already test it if I didn't running it without java scheduler and it works fine. No error whatsoerver. Don't know why i get this error if I running it using scheduler. Hope someone can help me. • How to ensure DB security for a Windows Forms application?

  The basic setup is classic - you're creating a Windows Forms application that connects to a DB and does all kinds of enterprise-y stuff. Naturally, such an application will have many users with different access rights in the DB, and each with their own login name and password. So how do you implement this? One way is to create a DB login for every application user, but that's a pretty serious thing to do, which even requires admin rights on the DB server, etc. If the DB server hosts several applications, the admins are quite likely not to be happy with this. In the web world typically one creates his own "Users" table which contains all the necessary info, and uses one fixed DB login for all interaction. That is all nice for a web app, but a windows forms can't hide this master login information, negating security altogether. (It can try to hide, but all such attempts are easily broken with a bit of effort). So... is there some middle way? Perhaps logging in with a fixed login, and then elevating priviledges from a special stored procedure which checks the username and password?

  I'm facing an issue of duplicated incremental field on a concurrency scenario. I'm using EF as the ORM tool, attempting to insert an entity with a field that acts as a incremental INT field. Basically this field is called "SequenceNumber", where each new record before insert, will read the database using MAX to get the last SequenceNumber, append +1 to it, and saves the changes. Between the getting of last SequenceNumber and Saving, that's where the concurrency is happening. I'm not using ID for SequenceNumber as it is not a unique constraint, and may reset on certain conditions such as monthly, yearly, etc. InvoiceNumber | SequenceNumber | DateCreated INV00001_08_14 | 1 | 25/08/2014 INV00001_08_14 | 1 | 25/08/2014 <= (concurrency is creating two SeqNo 1) INV00002_08_14 | 2 | 25/08/2014 INV00003_08_14 | 3 | 26/08/2014 INV00004_08_14 | 4 | 27/08/2014 INV00005_08_14 | 5 | 29/08/2014 INV00001_09_14 | 1 | 01/09/2014 <= (sequence number reset) Invoice number is formatted based on the SequenceNumber.   I have the following situation (as a reduced example). Two tables, Measures1 and Measures2, each of which store an ID, a Weight in grams, and optionally a Volume in fluid onces. E.g. 10 fluid ounces of substance 1 weighs 75 grams. The IDs are related: ID 1 in Measures1 is the same substance as ID 1 in Measures2. What I want to do is fill in the NULL volumes in Measures1 using the information in Measures2, but keeping the weights from Measures1 (then, ultimately, I can drop the Measures2 table, as it will be redundant). I know that one workaround might be to create a new table with the results of the above query (also selecting all of the other non-Volume fields in Measures1) and then drop both tables and replace Measures1 with the newly-created table, but I was wondering if there was any better way to do it that I am missing.

  Let's say I have these 2 tables QuesType and Ques:- QuesType QuestypeID|QuesType |Active ------------------------------------ 101 |QuesType1 |True 102 |QuesType2 |True 103 |XXInActiveXX |False Ques QuesID|Ques|Answer|QUesTypeID|Active ------------------------------------ 1 |Ques1|Ans1 |101 |True 2 |Ques2|Ans2 |102 |True 3 |Ques3|Ans3 |101 |True In the QuesType Table:- QuesTypeID is a Primary key In the Ques Table:- QuesID is a Primary key and QuesType ID is the Foreign Key that refernces QuesTypeID from QuesType Table Now I am unable to delete records from QuesType Table, I can only make QuesType inactive by setting Active=False. I am unable to delete QuesTypes permanently because of the Foreign key relation it has with Ques Table. So , I just set the column Active=false and those Questypes then don't show on my grid wen its binded. What I want to do is be able to delete any QuesType permamnently. Now it can only be deleted if its not being used anywhere in the Ques table, right? So to delete any QuesType permanently I thot this is what I could do:- In the grid that displays QuesTypes, I have this check box for Active and a button for delete.What I thot was, when a user makes some QuesType inactive then OnCheckChanged() event will run and that will have the code to delete all the Questions in Ques table that are using that QuesTypeID. Then on the QuesType grid, that QuesType would show as Deactivated and only then can a user delete it permanently. Am I thinking correctly? Currently in my DeleteQuesType Stored Procedure what I am doing is:- Setting the Active=false and Setting QuesTye= some string like XXInactiveXX Is there any other way?

• How can you exclude a large number of records in a cross db query using LINQ2SQL?

  So here is my situation: I have a vendor supplied DB we cannot modify and a custom db that imports data from the vendor app and acts on it. Once records are imported form the vendor app, they cannot appear on the list of records to be imported. Also we only want to display the 250 most recent records that have not been imported. What I originally started with was select the list of ids that have been imported from the custom db, and then query the vendor db, using the list of ids in a .Where(x = !idList.Contains(x.Id)) clause on the remote query. This worked up until we broke 2100 records imported into the custom db, as 2100 is the limit on the number of parameters that can be passed into SQL. After finding out this was the actual problem and not the 'invalid buffer'/'severe error' ADO.Net reported, my solution was to remove the first 2000 ids in the remote query, and then remove the remaining records in the local query. Having to pull back a large number of irrelevant records, just to exclude them, so I can get the correct 250 records seems very inelegant. Is there a better way to do this, short of doing a cross db stored procedure? Thanks in advance.

• How to do a partial database backup and restore?

  Simple problem. I'm working on a single SQL Server database which is shared between several offices. Each office has their own schema inside this database, thus dividing the database in logical pieces. (Plus one schema that is shared between multiple offices.) The database is stored on a dedicated server and we use a single database to keep the backup/restore procedure easier. The problem, however, is that the Accounting Office might be modifying a lot of data and then the Secretary Office makes a mistake which requires restoration of a backup. Unfortunately, restoring the backup means that Accounting will lose their recently added data. So, the alternative solution is by restoring the backup into a new database, remove the data from the old accounting schema and move the data for accounting only from the backup top the original database. This is the current solution and it's time-consuming and error-prone. So, is there a way to make backups of a single schema, possibly through code? And then to restore just that schema, probably through code too?

  I am trying to do something such as: for(int i = 0; i<10; i++) { for(int j = 0; j<10; j++) { Blah; } } //As you can see each time that there is a different i, j starts at 0 again. Using cursors in Oracle. But if I'm correct, after I fetch all rows from a cursor, it will not restart. Is there a way to do this? • What will be correct answer to "why is NoSQL faster than SQL" on interview?

  It's just nonsense for me personally. I can't see any performance boost by using NoSQL instead of SQL. Maybe SQL over NoSQL, yes but not in that way. I think that if I answer "I have no idea" or something like that it will be bad answer because this doesn't really look like a fake-question, it's a serious question on interview but how should be looking correct answer on this question? Or am I missing something about NoSQL?
