  • Visual Studio 2010 Setup Projects and x64 Support

    - by Shawn Cicoria
I was taking the Windows Azure CmdLets project and getting it into an MSI just to make it easier to deploy in a nice package.  I ran into problems with the Setup project not being able to properly establish the right registry settings for an x64 environment. Even though you set the target platform on the Setup project to x64 the InstallUtil.lib that get’s run is still x86.  In order to have it work property, you need to follow the steps identified here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/kz0ke5xt.aspx  The section “64-bit managed custom actions throw a System.BadImageFormatException exception” covers the steps you need to follow, using the Orca MSI editor to replace the InstallUtilLib.dll from the one that the Setup Project embeds (x86) to a x64 version. Now, works like a charm… Resultant installer here: http://cicoria.com/Downloads/AzureManagementCmdletsInstall.msi The CmdLets are the same ones from the Training Kit – November 2010 release.

  • SQLBeat Podcast Episode 3 – Buck Woody – Former Nun and Windows Azooray Solutioner

    - by SQLBeat
So here it is after so many anticpated months, Episode 3. I almost feel like like having an Amercian-style hot dog in a jar to celebrate. Buck Woody and I talk about that. And we talk about moms and a Woody tattoo,  Jehova’s Witness insurance salesmen, the proper pronunciation of Azure and character. We are in England, a country with so many names and very few ice cold beverages.  We find ourselves and our wives and yungins (we can say that cause we are from Florida) in the first SQL Saturday in the U.K., Cambridge.  Though I have spent some time with Buck over the years, this trip stood out as being one where we really bonded. And I have the audio and pictures to prove it. So without further annoying text intro, I give you 30 minutes of Buck Woody…and me asking dumb questions and saying "When I was grown up."  Enjoy. • DAC pack up all your troubles

Visual Studio 2010 is being geared up to become the natural way for developers to create databases. Central to this drive is the introduction of 'data-tier application components', or DACs. Something had to be in place for VS2010, but right now DAC packs only make sense for Azure. For this, they're cute, but hardly compelling. Nevertheless, DBAs would do well to get familiar with VS 2010 and DAC packs. Like it or not, they're both coming....Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • UDDI vs SO-Aware: Why SO-Aware is the More Efficient and Interoperable Alternative

    - by Vishal
Hello folks,   If you are implementing a service oriented architecture, and are unsure of the best governance approach to follow, then this webinar is a must-attend event for you.  We will discuss why SO-Aware is the more efficient and interoperable alternative to traditional UDDI-based SOA-governance.   Specifically, we will address the differences between UDDI and SO-Aware in terms of service discovery, configuration, and policy resolution.  Finally, we will address why the REST/Odata based model implemented by SO-Aware enables the most efficient governance not only for WCF but for BizTalk, the Windows Server AppFabric and the Windows Azure AppFabric as well.   Join us on January 26th at 2:00 ET - to register, click here    Thanks,   Vishal

SharePoint, WCF and Azure Trainings: more information There is a computer in your pocket, and mine. Though lets be honest, beyond email, Organizations though are still struggling to make use of these smart devices that they are already paying for. The reason is simple, Imagine a computer, with an inferior processor, poor connectivity, smaller screen, and easily lost and used for personal purposes. Add to it, multiple platforms, and an incredibly fast release cadence. In this fast paced session, Sahil will demonstrate mobile apps targeting the SharePoint and Office 365 platforms demonstrating what you, the Microsoft developer needs to learn and be on top of going forward. And yes, you need to broaden your horizons past C# too. But don’t worry, even if you have never worked with iOS before, there is plenty to chew on in this session. Read full article ....

  • The right way to find a SPUser in SharePoint 2013

    - by Sahil Malik
SharePoint, WCF and Azure Trainings: more information Obvious stuff out of the way, SharePoint 2013 is claims and claims only. If you’re still pimping classic windows identities, you’re a fool. But this creates an interesting wrinkle. How the hell is one supposed to find a SPUser? This, especially given that a user id now looks like this - i:0#.w|ws\administrator .. all of those have a meaning .. i stands for identity 0 is the zero’th registered claims provider w before the pipe is windows and after pipe is the final username. What if I had a hotmail account called ws\administrator? You see, browsing through web.SiteUsers, is no longer enough. Not only is it error prone, it won’t work for any other identity type besides Windows. So what is a poor SharePoint developer to do? Easy. Use the cod below instead, Read full article ....

  • Windows 8.1 Apps Now in Bookstores

    - by Stephen.Walther
My book Windows 8.1 Apps with HTML5 and JavaScript is in bookstores now and it is available for purchase from Amazon. Extensively updated for the release of Windows 8.1, this book covers all of the new features of the WinJS 2.0 library such as the Repeater, SearchBox, WebView, and NavBar controls and the new WinJS Scheduler. I wrote a new sample app for this edition of the book  – the MyTasks app — that demonstrates how to build a Windows Store app that interacts with Windows Azure Mobile Services. If you are currently using a Windows 8.1 computer then you can install the MyTasks sample app from the Windows Store. I’ve written a summary of the new features included in Windows 8.1 for app developers which you can read here: Top 10 Changes for Building Windows Store Apps with Windows 8.1

  • The layout page "~/Views/Shared/_Layout.cshtml" could not be found

    - by Rei Brazilva
I got this error and I can't figure out what is going on. I am positive the _layout.cshtml resides in the shared folder and for the sake of trying things out, I moved to the Home folder and it then told that the Views/Home/_Layout.cshtml couldn't be found there either. So now I'm thinking the problem is in the call for this file for some reason. I'm not going to pretend I know ASP.NET MVC4, so please when you answer, explain it as you would to someone who is not familiar with the system at all. Believe it or not, this error came from tutorial #1 ha ha Here's the code to show that I did code it right: @{ ViewBag.Title = "Home Page"; Layout = "~/Views/Shared/_Layout.cshtml"; } And here is a picture of the location p.s. I did my research, Google has nothing and there is another question here but it was asked on 2008 with MVC3 which is completely different I am running ASP.NET MVC4 on Azure Thanks

  • Great User Group if based near Gloucester + Links from Entity Framework 4.0 session

    - by Eric Nelson
I had a really fun evening doing “my final” EF 4.0 session last night (26th May 2010) at GL.NET based out of Gloucester (although secretly I made it into a IronRuby and Windows Azure session). They are a great crowd and Jimmy makes for a fantastic host + it is a very nice venue (Symantec offices in Gloucester, lots of parking, good room etc) + free pizza + free SWAG + trip to pub afterwards (the topics were very varied!). What more could you ask for? The next session is June 16th and will be on multi-tenanted ASP.NET MVC and comes highly recommended. • Pivotal change in strategy at Microsoft

    - by Sahil Malik
SharePoint, WCF and Azure Trainings: more information Drop whatever you are doing, and watch this video. Here is what Microsoft’s new CEO Satya Nadella said, .. If there is anything that would define windows, I think of the cloud as being in a heterogeneous device world. It will not be limited to Windows. I think that is perhaps the biggest pivotal change in our strategy. We absolutely think of building services and infrastructure in the cloud that will be across Android, iOS and Windows, and we will differentiate windows family with user experience that is consistent across all these devices .. • Getting Started on Isometric Board Game port

    - by Jehosephat
I have developed a (off-line) board game that I would like to translate to an online/social game in an isometric grid perspective. My background is in .NET web development, so I'm very comfortable with C#, HTML, jQuery/javascript. Still getting my feet wet with HTML5. I have familiarity with Flash, but I haven't worked with it in years. I'm also interested in working with Azure for hosting the back-end. Ultimately I'd like this game to have persistent leaderboard/achievements and therefore be able to log in through FB and Kong and the like. Obviously, I'm not looking for 'here's exactly how to do all of this'. But I would love some opinions on where to start, particularly given my background and goals. Would be happy to share more details if it makes answering easier! Thanks!

  • Access Control Service v2

    - by Your DisplayName here!
A Resource-STS (others call it RP-STS or federation gateway) is a necessity for non-trivial federated identity scenarios. ADFS v2 does an excellent job in fulfilling that role – but (as of now) you have to run ADFS on-premise. The Azure Access Control Service is a Resource-STS in the cloud (with all the usual scalability/availability) promises. Unfortunately a lot of (the more interesting) features in ACS v1 had to be cut due to constrained time/resources. The good news is that ACS v2 is now in CTP and brings back a lot of the missing features (like WS* support) and adds some really sweet new ones (out of the box federation with Google, Facebook, LiveID – and OpenId in general). You can read about the details here. On a related note – ACS v2 works out of the box with StarterSTS – simply choose the ADFS v2 option and point the management portal to the StarterSTS WS-Federation metadata endpoint. Have fun ;)

Well, Saturday was my presentation on Programming with Windows Azure, and it went well. Everything worked as I had wanted and I got to everything that I had planned. I did not even need my emergency backup filler. I only hope that the folks who attended got something from it. As for the whole conference, I think it was a resounding success. There were a LOT of good sessions to attend and people to meet. I had a great time, and I look forward to next year with great anticipation. Kudos to all (Lee, Jonathan, Boon(?)) and all (Jasmine, Nathan) who put this on. Great job, everyone!

Microsoft’s launched Generation 4 Modular Data Center design at the PDC 09 - The 20-foot container built on container-based model. Microsoft says the use of server-packed containers – known as Pre-Assembled Components (PACs) – will allow it to slash the cost of building its new data centers. Completely optimized for outdoor use, with a design that relies upon fresh air (”free cooling”) rather than air conditioning. Its exterior is designed to draw fresh air into the cold aisle and expel hot air from the rear of the hot aisle. • VS 11 vs VS 2012 [closed]

    - by Alex
I'm using Visual Studio 11 Beta at home, mainly for learning purposes. But now it's possible to download VS 2012 RC. Does it make sense to install it instead? Does it have many changes comparing with VS 11? I know that VS 11 doesn't work with Azure, was it fixed in VS 2012? EDIT: Actually I found this: What’s new in the RC since Beta, which describes changes in RC and if I decide to install it, I don't need to uninstall previous version: We’ve enabled upgrade from beta to RC, so if you’re using the same product edition (e.g. Professional, Ultimate, etc.), you do not need to uninstall the beta first. Simply run the Visual Studio 2012 RC installer, which will uninstall the right Beta bits and lay down the RC bits, all at once.

  • Cancelling your Windows Phone Dev account- is very difficult.

SharePoint, WCF and Azure Trainings: more information Here is Microsoft’s new business model. Make it so damned difficult to cancel your windows phone dev account subscription, that you will just give up trying and pay as the easy route out.Very sad that it has come to this. Usually I would not approach an open forum such as my site for such issues, but the sad state of their affairs leaves me with no choice. Here is the issue, last year, I opened a WPDev account, for which you have to pay. Seeing that its been a year, I haven’t submitted anything, I didn’t want to renew my account and pay the fee. I guess if I ever write a WP app, I will reopen the subscription. Sounds about right huh? fair? So, what would you expect? Login to your account, find the subscription, hit cancel! SharePoint, WCF and Azure Trainings: more information Sometimes you need to identify every device your app is installed on uniquely. This is for instance important where you have per-device licensing restrictions. For Win8 store apps, You can use ASHWID (Application Specific Hardware Identifier). ASHWID will be different app to app and device to device. Any hardware changes to the device will cause the unique id to change. You can also detect minor change vs. major change to build custom level of tolerance in what is considered a change. For instance, ejecting a USB stick is a minor change. • Removing AppPrincipals from Office365

    - by Sahil Malik
SharePoint, WCF and Azure Trainings: more information So here is an annoying issue. If I have your AppPrincipal and secret, I can party as you! But as we go through our usual dev cycles, we create these ApplicationIDs. Hell Visual Studio will create them for us, to make things easy! The problem is, many a developer, and some a ITOgre, may leave these AppPrincipalIds sitting there and not clean them up when they are done playing. You can look for currently registered App Principals at https://yourtenant/_layouts/15/appprincipals.aspx The problem is, that URL shows you App Principals registered AND currently in use. Currently NOT in use App Principals are NOT shown on that page. The same issue applies on premises also, even though here I am talking specifically about Office 365. Getting rid of these in On-Prem is easy, just use the Object model (server side). Read full article ....
