  • linq: SQL performance on high loaded web applications

    I started working with linq to SQL several weeks ago. I got really tired of working with SQL server directly through the SQL queries (sqldatareader, sqlcommand and all this good stuff).  After hearing about linq to SQL and mvc I quickly moved all my projects to these technologies. I expected linq to SQL work slower but it suprisongly turned out to be pretty fast, primarily because I always forgot to close my connections when using datareaders. Now I don't have to worry about it. But there's one problem that really bothers me. There's one page that's requested thousands of times a day. The system gets data in the beginning, works with it and updates it. Primarily the updates are ++ @ -- (increase and decrease values). I used to do it like this UPDATE table SET value=value+1 WHERE ID=@I'd It worked with no problems obviously. But with linq to SQL the data is taken in the beginning, moved to the class, changed and then saved. Stats.registeredusers++; Db.submitchanges(); Let's say there were 100 000 users. Linq will say "let it be 100 001" instead of "let it be increased by 1". But if there value of users has already been increased (that happens in my site all the time) then linq will be like oops, this value is already 100 001. Whatever I'll throw an exception" You can change this behavior so that it won't throw an exception but it still will not set the value to 100 002. Like I said, it happened with me all the time. The stas value was increased twice a second on average. I simply had to rewrite this chunk of code with classic ado net. So my question is how can you solve the problem with linq

  • Writing my own iostream utility class: Is this a good idea?

    I have an application that wants to read word by word, delimited by whitespace, from a file. I am using code along these lines: std::istream in; string word; while (in.good()) { in>>word; // Processing, etc. ... } My issue is that the processing on the words themselves is actually rather light. The major time consumer is a set of mySQL queries I run. What I was thinking is writing a buffered class that reads something like a kilobyte from the file, initializes a stringstream as a buffer, and performs extraction from that transparently to avoid a great many IO operations. Thoughts and advice?

  • Macro for one-to-many splitting of Word documents

    I have a Word document which is several hundred pages long. I would like to use a macro to automatically create about a dozen or so sub-documents based on certain rules (mainly, occurrence of certain strings in each Section). Is this possible? What VBA functions should I read-up on? Does anybody know of any code examples which are even remotely similar and which I may be able to customize for my purposes? Thanks

  • How do you detect when the Flowplayer has started playing the video?

    Hi. I'm using the Flowplayer Flash video player to play MP4 videos inside an AnythingSlider. I need to detect when the user has clicked the start button on the video so to stop the slideshow and allow the user to view the video. I've tried using this code just to get an alert box but it doesn't do anything (the code is at the end of the page, before the closing </body> tag): <script type="text/javascript"> $f("player","global/js/flowplayer/flowplayer-3.1.5.swf",{ onStart: function(clip) { alert('player started'); } }); </script> The Flowplayer is implemented as part of the html5media library, which automatically detects whether the browser can handle the <video> tag; if not, it replaces the anchor tag below with the Flowplayer: <video id="vid" width="372" height="209" poster="global/vid/bbq-poster.jpg" controls preload> <source id="videoSource" src="global/vid/BBQ_Festival.mp4" type='video/mp4; codecs="avc1.42E01E, mp4a.40.2"' onerror="fallback(this.parentNode)" ></source> <a href="global/vid/BBQ_Festival.mp4" style="display:block;width:372px;height:209px; padding-left:5px; " id="player"> </a> </video> So the $f() function call is in a JavaScript block at the end of the page, to give the player a chance to load correctly.     System.Data.Linq.ChangeConflictException: 2 of X updates failed. at System.Data.Linq.ChangeProcessor.SubmitChanges(ConflictMode failureMode) at System.Data.Linq.DataContext.SubmitChanges(ConflictMode failureMode) at PROJECT.Controllers.HomeController.ClickProc(Int32 id, String code, String n) This is what I get very often. This action is done thousands of times a day, and I get this exception about once every 5 seconds. From what I understand it happens when something changes in the database in the period between creating DataContext and updating it. Am I right? What's the problem here and how can I fix it?

  • ASP.NET MVC 2 - ViewData empty after POST

    I don't really know where to look for an error... the situation: I have an ASPX view which contains a form and a few input's, and when I click the submit button everything is POST'ed to one of my ASP.NET MVC actions. When I set a breakpoint there, it is hit correctly. When I use FireBug to see what is sent to the action, I correctly see data1=abc&data2=something&data3=1234. However, nothing is arriving in my action method. ViewData is empty, there is no ViewData["data1"] or anything else that would show that data arrived. How can this be? Where can I start looking for the error?

  • Rewrite SQL Fulltext Function to return Table only

    I have a MS SQL Fulltext Function like this: (...) RETURNS TABLE AS RETURN SELECT * FROM fishes INNER JOIN CONTAINSTABLE(fishes, *, @keywords, @limit) AS KEY_TBL ON fishes.id = KEY_TBL.[KEY] When I use this function in LINQ, it generates a special return type which includes all fields of my "fishes" table, plus Key and Rank. How could I rewrite above query, or change something in LINQ, to omit Key and Rank and just return my "fishes" results (and to have the fulltext search result objects be of type Fish, which is what I really care about, so I don't have to cast)?

  • Is there anything wrong with my Factory class?

    class PieceFactory { @SuppressWarnings("rawtypes") public Piece createPiece(String pieceType) throws Throwable{ Class pieceClass = Class.forName(pieceType); Piece piece = (Piece) pieceClass.newInstance(); return piece; } } I'm not all used to handling exceptions yet therefore I'm just throwing them, but everywhere I use a method that uses this factory it tells me I have to throw exceptions like throwable. For example, in one of my classes I have a method that instantiates a lot of objects using the method that uses the factory. I can use the method in that class by just throwing the exception, however it won't work if I try to pass a reference to that class to another class and then use the method from there. Then it forces me to try catch the exception. I probably don't need a factory but it seemed interesting and I'd like to try to use patterns. The reason I created the factory was that I have 6 subclasses of Piece and I wan't to use a method to instantiate them by passing the type of subclass I want as an argument to the method.

    Hello, I've got some SQL that used to work with an older MySQL version, but after upgrading to a newer MySQL 5 version, I'm getting an error. Here's the SQL: SELECT portfolio.*, projects.*, types.* FROM projects, types LEFT JOIN portfolio ON portfolio.pfProjectID = projects.projectID WHERE projects.projectType = types.typeID AND types.typeID = #URL.a# ORDER BY types.typeSort, projects.projectPriority ASC and the new error I'm receiving: Unknown column 'projects.projectID' in 'on clause' How can I convert this to compatible SQL for the newer MySQL version?   • Why does a sub-class class of a class have to be static in order to initialize the sub-class in the

    So, the question is more or less as I wrote. I understand that it's probably not clear at all so I'll give an example. I have class Tree and in it there is the class Node, and the empty constructor of Tree is written: public class RBTree { private RBNode head; public RBTree(RBNode head,RBTree leftT,RBTree rightT){ this.head=head; this.head.leftT.head.father = head; this.head.rightT.head.father = head; } public RBTree(RBNode head){ this(head,new RBTree(),new RBTree()); } public RBTree(){ this(new RBNode(),null,null); } public class RBNode{ private int value; private boolean isBlack; private RBNode father; private RBTree leftT; private RBTree rightT; } } Eclipse gives me the error: "No enclosing instance of type RBTree is available due to some intermediate constructor invocation" for the "new RBTree()" in the empty constructor. However, if I change the RBNode to be a static class, there is no problem. So why is it working when the class is static. BTW, I found an easy solution for the cunstructor: public RBTree(){ this.head = new RBNode(); } So, I have no idea what is the problem in the first piece of code.

I want to prevent people at the earliest possible point from submitting too large URL parameters so the server doesn't get taxed more than necessary in the event that somebody tries to "attack" it with large invalid URL parameters.

    I need the latest Subsonic build or build it by my own. Subsonic project web site shows the latest available version is Subsonic v3.0.0.3 released at July 15, 2009. Questions: Are there any later builds - e.g. maintained by community members? If so, how can I get the latest one? In worst case I'm ready to get the latest source code and try to build it by my own. Are there any instructions for this? Please note, that I'm not interested in almost 1 year old builds - I need a build based on the latest code for tests (LINQ, performance), ideally - compiled for .NET 4.0.

    I am using jQuery UI; Draggable http://jqueryui.com/demos/draggable invoked like this: $(document).ready(function(){ $("#side_bar").sortable({ revert: true }); $(".draggable").draggable({ containment: 'parent', hascroll: true, handle: 'div.box_header', scrollSensitivity: 100, scrollSpeed: 100, axis: 'y', connectToSortable: '#side_bar', helper: 'clone', opacity: 0.35 }); }); You can see the html structure on http://www.sarsclan.co.uk (right side bar area). It seems to create a transparant clone as your dragging, but when you drop it puts the draggable div in the right place, but leaves the original div in it's place and just appends the dom with a clone of that original div in its new place.
