  • Box 2d basic questions

    I am a bit new to box2d and I am developing an game with type and letters. I am using an svg font and generate the box2d bodies direct from the glyphs path definition, using the convex hull of them. I also have an decomposition routine the decomposes this hull if necessary. All this it is more or less working, except that I got some strange errors which definitely are caused by the scale factors. The problem is caused by two factors: first: the world scale of box2d, second: the the precision of curve-approximation of the glyph vectors. So through scaling down the input vertices for box2d, it happens that they become equal caused by numerical precision, what causes errors in box2d. Through scaling the my glyphs a bit up, this goes away. I also goes away if I chose a different world scale factor, but this slows down the whole animation quite much! So if my view port is about 990px * 600px and i want to animate Glyphs in box2d which should have a size from about 50px * 50px up to 300px * 300px, which scale factor of the b2world should i choose? How small should the smallest distance from on vertex to another be, while approximating the glyph vectors? Thanks for help greetings philipp EDIT:: I continued reading the docs of box2d and after rethinking of the units system, which is designed to handle object from 0.1 up to 10 meters, I calculated a scale factor of 75. So Objects 600px width will are 8 meters wide in box2d and even small objects of about 20px width will become 0.26 meters width in box2d. I will go on trying with this values, but if there is somebody out there who could give me a clever advice i would be happy!

  • Scoring/analysis of Subjective testing for skills assessment

    I am lucky in the sense that I have been given the opportunity to be a 'Technical Troubleshooter' for our offshore development team. While I am confident and capable of dealing with most issues, I have come across something that I am not. Based on initial discussions with various team members both on and offshore, a requirement for a 'repeatable, consistent' skills assessment has been identified. In my opinion, the best way to achieve this would be a combination of objective and subjective tests. The former normally being an initial online skills assessment on various subjects, for example General C#, WCF and MVC. The latter being a technical test where the candidate would need to solve various problems and (hopefully) explain the thought processes involved with the solution whilst doing so. Obviously, the first method is consistent, repeatable and extremely accurate. The second is always going to be subjective and based on the approach, the solution (or possibly not) and other factors. The 'scoring' of this is also going to be down to the experience and skills of the assessor and this is where my problem lies; The person that is expected to be the assessor initially (me) has no experience. The people that will ultimately continue this process for other people will never remain the same due to project constraints and internal reasons, this changes the baseline for comparison. I am not aware of any suitable system that can be classed as consistent and repeatable for subjective tests with the 2 factors above, let alone if those did not exist. So anyway, I have to present a plan that will ultimately generate a skills/gap analysis and it is unlikely that I will be able to use an objective method (budget constraints most likely reason). The only option left is the subjective methods and the issues above. Does anyone have any suggestions for an approach that may tick all the boxes?

  • Google's Search Box in SharePoint

    Has anyone here looked at the Google Search Box for SharePoint? We're looking into it as part of our MOSS deployment since we also use Google's GSA, and I'm personally not impressed with it, while a colleague seems to think that it's the only option we should be using, or even considering. While I've got no problems with the GSA indexing our SharePoint content, the Search Box just seems clumsy. It looks horrible, the results being returned are much more limited than what I get if I use the GSA search page itself, configuring it has been nothing but a PITA and it's still only got a basic config ans isn't respecting things like user permissions or search scopes that the default SharePoint Indexer and search controls handle out of the box. What are your guys thoughts? Am I being overly critical, and should just spend more time trying to configure it? Are you using a split-personality with it yourself, where you have the GSA for enterprise wide search, but use SharePoint for local searches? Other thoughts?

    I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 Natty and when I installed it I had a problem with blank screen on startup and found a solution but I have the same problem when it is inactive and goes blank screen, it won't come back, so I have to restart. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help.   • Manipulating Human Tasks (for testing) by Mark Nelson

    A few months ago, while working on a BPM migration, I had the need to look at the status of human tasks, and to manipulate them – essentially to just have a single user take random actions on them at some interval, to help drive a set of processes that were being tested. To do this, I wrote a little utility called httool.  It reuses some of the core domain classes from my custom worklist sample (with minimal changes to make it a remote client instead of a local one). I have not got around to documenting it yet, but it is pretty simple and fairly self explanatory.  So I thought I would go ahead and share it with folks, in case anyone is interested in playing with it. You can get the code from my ci-samples repository on java.net: git clone git://java.net/ci4fmw~ci-samples It is in the httool directory.   • A Reusable Builder Class for Ruby Testing

    My last post was about a class for building test data objects in C#. This post describes the same tool, but implemented in Ruby. The C# version was written first but I originally came up with the solution in my head using Ruby, and then I translated it to C#.   • setting up a WGR614v7 behind a linux box

    Here's the setup, I have an openSUSE box with 2 NICs, one goes to my home network router, the other has DHCP running and it attached to a wireless router. I'm trying to get this setup to work before I switch to the linux box as my home network router. My DHCP will offer the wireless router (a WGR614v7) an address, but anything that connects to the wireless router ends up with a APIPA address. I have all the firewalls on the wireless network turned off as well as the wireless router's own DHCP. The linux box isn't offering addresses to anything past the wireless router. Is this a problem with the router or my DHCP setup? For testing purposes, I have both NICs set in the internal zone and I've tried wireless and wired connections to the WGR614v7 both to no avail.

    I'm trying to make a simple app that will test the save and load state. Is it a good idea to make an app that has an auto save and load game every time the newbies open the first app then continues it on the other day? I'm trying to make a simple app with a simple moving block sprite, starting at the center coordinate. Once I moved the sprite to the top by touch n' drag, I touch the back key to close the app. I expected that once I re-open the app and the block sprite is still at the top. But instead, it goes back to the center instead. Where can I find more ways to use the preferences or manipulating by telling the dispose method to dispose only specific wastes but not the important records (fastest time, last time where the sprite is located via coordinates, etc.). Is there really an easy way or it has no shortcuts but most effective way? I need help to expand more ideas. Thank you.     If you need create Unit tests for internal methods within a assembly in Visual Studio 2005 or greater, then we need to add an entry in the AssemblyInfo.cs file of the assembly for which you are creating the units tests for. For e.g. if you need to create tests for a assembly named FincadFunctions.dll & this assembly contains internal/friend methods within which need to write unit tests for then we add a entry in the FincadFunctions.dll’s AssemblyInfo.cs file like so : 1: [assembly: System.Runtime.CompilerServices.InternalsVisibleTo("FincadFunctionsTests")] where FincadFunctionsTests is the name of the Unit Test project which contains the Unit Tests. However if the FincadFunctions.dll is a strongly named assembly then you will the following error when compiling the FincadFunctions.dll assembly :      Friend assembly reference “FincadFunctionsTests” is invalid. Strong-name assemblies must specify a public key in their InternalsVisibleTo declarations. Thus to add a public key token to InternalsVisibleTo Declarations do the following: You need the .snk file that was used to strong-name the FincadFunctions.dll assembly. You can extract the public key from this .snk with the sn.exe tool from the .NET SDK. First we extract just the public key from the key pair (.snk) file into another .snk file. sn -p test.snk test.pub Then we ask for the value of that public key (note we need the long hex key not the short public key token): sn -tp test.pub We end up getting a super LONG string of hex, but that's just what we want, the public key value of this key pair. We add it to the strongly named project "FincadFunctions.dll" that we want to expose our internals from.   • Seamless Mode Not Working Correctly in Virtual Box

    I run Ubuntu Desktop in a VirtualBox seamless mode, hosted on Windows 7. I recently upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04 and seamless mode no longer works correctly. I have re-installed guest extensions. The problem is that the Ubuntu desktop wallpaper is shown, effectively blocking the Windows desktop. I can bring Windows apps to the foreground, but as soon as I bring any Ubuntu window to the foreground, all the windows apps will disappear, hidden by the ubuntu desktop even if I activated an Ubuntu window in a different monitor. So, it is not very much different from full-screen mode at this time. I suspect if I could turn off the Ubuntu desktop or wallpaper this would be a sufficient workaround (this is basically what Seamless mode is) but that does not seem to be possible within Ubuntu itself. [Jeremy doesn't specify system config, but I can confirm I'm seeing this behavior in Win 7 64-bit with both 32-bit and 64-bit guests. Giovanni sees the same thing on his laptop running Vista Ultimate 64 bit after upgrading his 32-bit guest to 12.04 (forums.virtualbox.org p225407, requires logging in with your free Oracle account). I was using vbox 4.1.14r77440 and matching Guest Additions. I upgraded to 4.1.16-78094 vbox+additions. Still a problem. And I filed launchpad bug 999929 to see if I can get feedback from developers. – tbc0] Any other ideas?

    We have an HTML designer who is not a developer but needs to modify .aspx files from our ASP.NET 2.0 projects from time to time in order to get CSS to work properly with them. Currently, this involves giving her the .aspx page by itself, which she opens and edits via Visual Studio 2008 (her computer used to be a developer's). I'm considering getting her set up with Visual Web Developer 2010 Express and Subversion access so she can be more independent, but I wanted to make sure VS Express will work properly with what we do. So: Does VWD 2010 Express support automated tests? If no to the above, what happens when it opens a solution file that includes a test project, modifies it, and saves it? Are there any potential snags with setting up AnkhSVN with VWD 2010 Express?

  • Gradual approaches to dependency injection

    I'm working on making my classes unit-testable, using dependency injection. But some of these classes have a lot of clients, and I'm not ready to refactor all of them to start passing in the dependencies yet. So I'm trying to do it gradually; keeping the default dependencies for now, but allowing them to be overridden for testing. One approach I'm conisdering is just moving all the "new" calls into their own methods, e.g.: public MyObject createMyObject(args) { return new MyObject(args); } Then in my unit tests, I can just subclass this class, and override the create functions, so they create fake objects instead. Is this a good approach? Are there any disadvantages? More generally, is it okay to have hard-coded dependencies, as long as you can replace them for testing? I know the preferred approach is to explicitly require them in the constructor, and I'd like to get there eventually. But I'm wondering if this is a good first step.

  • Unable to get screen signal after purge FGLRX

    I thought that my ATI driver was not running well so I wanted to re-instal it completely. I did: sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx* sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon and after a boot I wanted to intal the ATI driver BUT at the boot no more signal to my screen. Since, every time I turn on my PC it gets to purple screen and then screen shuts down ! Note that: Even if the screen is off, PC seems to be running almost well: I m still able to use my network to access data shared with NFS. Using live USB I have no screen problem. I tried to plug my screen on an alternative output but it did not work. I tried CTRL+ALT+F1 while being on purple screen but it does not do anything, screen shut down anyway. I m going to try the SHIFT thing and learn from blackscreen wiki...
